Little Stars Alloa – new nursery
Little Stars Nursery is expanding in Alloa with the construction of a 4000sq ft purpose built open plan day nursery at a cost of over £650k. The new facility will have 3 open plan areas for babies, toddlers and pre-school. It will cater for 52 children from 6 months to 5 years old and the after school club will have space for 30 children. The nursery will be completed by the end of December 2017 ready for the new intake in January 2018. Little Stars Nursery Alloa will also offer an after school club (All Stars) and holiday club attached to the nursery. To complete this wonderful new facility the outdoor area which extends to 1/3 of an acre will have the most up to date play equipment and dedicated learning zone. Lighthouse Studios on the move So after 14 years Lighthouse Studios are moving on, things change, so we are changing too. I am asked so often now to take photographs for people at their homes, an outdoor space or family events at venues, that it just makes more sense to not have a studio. Our phone number, website and Facebook page are still the same, I am still photographing lots of lovely wedding couples and making businesses look great with my commercial photography and professional headshots. So it is all change, but sort of no change. Calling all mumpreneurs! Good Green Fun is a Stirling charity that recycles and sells a wide range of good quality preloved baby and children’s items. Our aim is to help local families, while diverting waste from landfill. We have a dedicated friendly team who are the heart and soul of the charity and as we embark upon our 10th year, we are expanding! We are seeking talented mums and dads to join our volunteer team. Register for Wear a Hat Day 2018 and start planning your event! Wear a Hat Day is the UK’s premier brain tumour research fundraising event. It takes place on Thursday 29th March 2018. March is also UK Brain Tumour Awareness Month. Schools and families across the country get involved to help raise funds for research into brain tumors’. Brain tumors kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer… yet just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease. Families are being left devastated by this dreadful disease. This is unacceptable! Brain Tumour Research is the only national charity in the UK that is purely dedicated to raising funds for continuous and sustainable scientific research into brain tumours. Taking part can be as simple as putting on a hat and donating on the day, but most families like to create entertaining fundraising events. Many schools for example have inventive hat competitions, parades and fashion shows and raise hundreds if not thousands of pounds. On average, organisations raise £250, with small ones £50 and some raising more than £2,000! Whatever target you set yourselves aim to smash it!! lubs and classes are a great way to continue your child’s development, as well as allow them to have fun, get exercise, socialise with others, and take part in activities they might not have the chance to at home. There are a huge range of different clubs and classes on offer, and while they may be better suited for some children than others, all of them are designed to be fun and useful for developing vital skills for your children. Local clubs are also a great way for parents and carers to get out and about and meet other parents and make long lasting friendships. Here are just a few of the clubs and classes on offer, and some of the benefits they can bring.
Drama
Drama is always hugely popular with children and really helps younger people release their creative thoughts and let their imagination run wild. Always fun and engaging, it’s also a great way to help children develop their own sense of self confidence and self-esteem - even shy children love taking part. It can also be a great way to develop an interest in other forms of art. Check out the Macrobert and Falkirk Town Hall.
Brownies/Cubs
Joining your local Guides and Scout group is a great way to get your child to experience the outdoors and engage and socialise with others. Studies have shown that scouting organisations help children with their mental health in later life, and with the huge range of activities on offer and great fun ways to learn, you’ll be sure to get your children off to a good start.
Music
Our holiday courses for children aged 7 & 8 and 9-13 are suitable for those who have either done no cycle proficiency training or who feel they need more practice to cycle safely on the roads. We start in a traffic free area before moving onto quiet roads.
Music classes will help your child to develop their artistic talents by exploring how to create music and learning an instrument. As well as the joys of music, it’s also a great way to learn other valuable abilities - like patience, discipline, and social
and physical skills. Look out for Hartbeeps, Jo Jingles and Music Bugs for younger ones and Stirling Rock School for learning an instrument as well as preschool classes.
Baby and Toddler Physical Sensory Classes
These classes allow you to explore music, songs and a multi-sensory environment with your child, Not only will your baby/toddler benefit from the fun and lively interactions with those around them, as a parent you will have a lovely bonding time with your baby and also get a chance to get out of the house and meet other parents in a relaxed and fun way. Martial Arts
Martial arts are a great way to help develop confidence in children, as well as learning values like discipline and patience. Teaching responsible self-defence helps to benefit children enormously, and it’s a great and fun way to get exercise too. Clubs and Classes Arts and Crafts
There are lots of places where you can drop in to get involved in crafting with your kids. They can learn skills such as painting, gluing, cutting out and sticking and of course the art of adding glitter! Check out your local library for craft sessions and check out Howie’s Kids Club and The Engine Shed for creative events.
Swimming
Learning to swim is a great and important life skill and it seems that the younger you start, the less likely it is that your child will be nervous in water. Teaching your child to gain confidence in the water is a lifelong skill. Check out Turtle Tots and Falkirk Community Trust.
Cycling
Cycling is a skill that all the family can enjoy. Check out Stirling Cycle Training for that extra input to help children (and adults) be more confident at cycling in traffic.
Extra tuition

Clubs and Classes Unique Cellfield Dyslexia Programme in Stirling
Howie’s Kids Club
Stirling families are fortunate to have easy access to the unique Cellfield dyslexia programme, which can be life changing. Around 10% of the population suffer from some form of dyslexia or similar processing difficulty and, whilst effective teaching does help, Cellfield is a unique programme which develops and strengthens areas in the brain used for language processing. The Howgate Kids Club is free to join and attend and hosts activities for children aged 3-11 years on the first Saturday of every month. You can register at the Help Desk where you will receive a welcome gift and a membership card and key fob. A historic October break at The National Wallace Monument Come face-to-face with William Wallace and the Monument’s Caretaker as costumed actors perform ‘A Hero Remembered’ on 7th, 8th, 14th and 15th October and learn more about Scotland’s National Hero during live presentations on 11th October. Challenge the kids to count the steps on the way to the top as you explore the exhibition galleries inside the Monument. The Hall of Arms shows how The Battle of Stirling Bridge was fought and won, and includes more information on the life of William Wallace. The Hall of Heroes celebrates famous Scots inspired by the country’s first national hero – and is home to the legendary Wallace Sword. The Royal Chamber has the facts and figures behind the building of the Monument with a mini Monument for kids to build and the Crown offers panoramic views from the top of the 220ft tower. Why you like living where you do? Stirling and Causewayhead in particular offers stunning scenery, right on our doorstep. It has a very active, sporting community and there’s always lots going on. Our daughter’s week is filled with dancing classes, Rookie Lifeguarding at Wallace High, and Guides in Bridge of Allan to name but a few and it’s all within easy reach. Favourite shop My favourite shop in Stirling is Europa Music on Friars Street. In my view quality independent shops like this should be supported on a ‘use it or lose it’ basis. We also like Made in Stirling which promotes locally made and sourced products. Molly’s favourite shop changes each week and Karen just loves shops – period. Favourite park Causewayhead Park. Good for kids of all ages and a good place to sit and have a coffee too if the weather is okay! Favourite children’s club/class This has to be Kay Klass dance school. absolutely loves it! Favourite day out When the weather is good we opt for a bike ride to Bridge of Allan or beyond and an ice cream reward in Allan Water Cafe at the end of the ride. On gloomier days we love going to Macrobert cinema. It has such a relaxed feel to it and the cinema is very reasonably priced versus the bigger chains. Favourite child friendly restaurant Corrieri’s Italian Cafe just along from our shop is a great, relaxed place for a treat dinner or coffee and cake. Proudest eco-friendly moment Stirling has an excellent standard of recycling compared to other areas and to kids growing up in the area, re-cycling is something that becomes second nature. Best planet saving tip Ride a bike wherever and whenever you can instead of taking the car. If you work locally get quality clothing and mudguards and you can commute comfortably to work. Good for the planet and also your physical and mental health, so everyone’s a winner. No parent should be without I think the best answer to this is ‘their wallet!’ but my wife suggests we go for ‘wet wipes and alcohol hand gel’ (she is a nurse). Parenting pet hates Kids with bad manners. Favourite family holiday spot Italy – We love the pace of life, the language, the food, the style, the people, the culture and the weather.
