New nursery and pre-school staff will be required to undertake paediatric first aid for the first time, thanks to new government proposals.
The new proposals will mean that newly qualified staff with a childcare Level 2 and 3 qualification must have an emergency paediatric first aid or full paediatric first certificate – a lifesaving change which will add approximately 15,000 additional trained early years professionals to our nurseries and pre-schools every year. There will also be a new deal in place to help early years providers to buy life-saving defibrillator machines at a reduced price. The plans have received the support of parents Joanne and Dan Thompson, who have been campaigning for the change following the tragic death of their daughter Millie at nursery in October 2012. Their important campaign culminated in an e-petition signed by over 103,000 people. ‘As a parent myself, I know that every single mum and dad wants the confidence that those tasked with caring for their child have the right training should the absolute worst happen,’ said Childcare and Education Minister (at time of going to press), Sam Gyimah. ‘Today’s proposals will mean that thousands more staff will be able to respond to emergencies more quickly, making sure parents really can access the very best possible childcare choices for their families. Not only will this help ensure children are safe while they learn, grow and develop but it will also raise the quality and skills of the Early Years workforce to help them deal with day to day first aid issues such as allergies and knowing when to call parents.’

GREAT BRITISH TENNIS WEEKEND RETURNS IN JUNE The second instalment of the fun-filled Great British Tennis Weekend returns in August as thousands of families hit the tennis courts for free.
On the 1st and 2nd of August, venues up and down the country will open their doors as the nation goes tennis crazy in the lead up to a fantastic summer of tennis. Great British Tennis Weekend is the UK’s biggest ever public tennis event and offers free tennis for families of all ages and abilities. The campaign aims to inspire people to get on court and take part in a variety of activities. Players will be able to experience Cardio Tennis, Mini Tennis, coaching and much more – all for free.

Camp in, camp out, GREAT BRITISH TENNIS camp all about. WEEKEND RETURNS IN JUNE March of The Mermaids was founded in 2011 by organiser Hannah Chilton, 27 from Brighton, inspired by a life-long obsession with mermaids and a passion for the sea. Hannah’s main inspiration to create the event came from years of following the famous Coney Island Mermaid Parade which takes place every year in Brooklyn, New York. The meeting point for the parade is on Hove Lawns at 12pm (next to the Peace Statue). The parade commences at 2pm and ends approx. 4pm at their after-party venue, Bar Azure (on the lower promenade after the pier). Leading the way for the march on the day will be Compere Mermaid with a megaphone, actress/ performer Honour Mission. At their after-party there will be music, real mermaids, and the crowning of their Queen Mermaid and King Prawn.The event is a family friendly day for all ages to take part in. This year the march will be followed by a further ‘Fin-ale’ party at The Tempest Inn from 9pm. You can find out more about the event here:

Summer holidays are a perfect time for kids to get creative and build a shelter or den. Nature’s classroom
By Hannah Hunter As parents we know that children are happy in the outdoors, and once even the most hardened of city-dwellers have got used to the damp and mud, they revel in unstructured time spent in the natural world. Outdoor play can develop children’s understanding of risk, as well as testing their emotional and physical strength. Learning how high they can climb or how brave they can be, teaches them about themselves as well as how they relate to the environment. Contact with nature has even been shown to increase creativity and language development.

Forest schools
Inspired by Danish ‘open air life’ nurseries, the first UK Forest School was started in Somerset in 1993, at Bridgewater College. Since then the movement has spread across the UK, with many Local Authorities employing trained Forest Schools practitioners to deliver a woodland learning experience each week, usually to primary-aged children and nurseries. Small groups of children are taken into woodland or other natural environment, “to support the development of a relationship between the learner and the natural world.” Children are encouraged to explore their environments, taking supported risks, and the learning is child-centred rather than teacher-led.
Clubs and classes
There are after-school clubs and classes that can support children’s learning outdoors. Many schools have nature or gardening clubs, often run by parent volunteers. Tried-and-tested outdoor organizations, the Scouts and Girl Guides, offer a range of activities and camps. exploring issues around nature and the natural environment. They have different groups that meet up each week based on age groups and enjoy camping trips in the holidays. There are several groups based in the Sussex Coast area, go onto their website and enter your postcode to find a group near you: www.woodcraft.org.uk As well as providing accessible venues for school and group outings, the Wildlife Trusts run activities across the UK just for families and children, organised by local groups, ranging from ‘nature tots’ toddler groups to family pond-dipping days. Go to the Forestry Commission website at www.forestry.govuk, to find your nearest woodlands. They have a free app with maps and local information on camping, trails and activities. At many of their forest centres you can buy a pack that will take you on a ‘Superworm’ kids trail, which includes activities and challenges for younger children.

“To get the whole family moving, you could try geocaching.” The National Trust has set up free trails– all you need is a GPS enabled device that uses coordinates (you can use a smartphone). Download co-ordinates to find the caches (small waterproof boxes of ‘treasure’). The Trust also provide less ‘techy’ outdoor activities for families – their 50 things to do before you’re 11¾ is a good starting point. You can pledge some ‘wild time’ with your children by signing up to The Wild Network – an organisation dedicated to reconnecting children with nature, at www.projectwildthing.com. They have a calendar of different events, and lots of fun activity ideas that will get you and your kids outdoors. The film that inspired the organization is available to watch online, it’s an interesting take on how to ‘re-brand’ nature to appeal to the younger generation, who they claim are suffering from ‘nature-deficit disorder’.

Summer is the perfect time to ... 1. Go to a Family Food Festival Food Festivals are becoming increasingly popular with families as they are a great way to introduce children to new foods. With many of the festivals now running tents where children can cook with experienced teachers and more often children’s entertainment too. Live music, summer sun a lovely way to spend the afternoon with your family. We have collated a list of a few festivals that are in our area on page 14 of the magazine.

2. Swing through the trees Children over the height of one metre can have a go at the adventure centre from company Go Ape at Tilgate Country Park, Crawley. 7. Stock up on some garden toys... Balls, bats, hoops, and a space hopper will keep on providing fun but our favourite is the Swingball Tailball Set. 3. Learn about ecology and more! The Observatory Science Centre in Herstmonceux activity area will be in their new marquee over the summer holidays and it promises to be even bigger and better than before. It is International Year of Light so it will be extremely light and colourful exploring the themes of nature, ecology, conservation and energy saving. There will be things to draw and colour, and you will be able to make a beautiful felt butterfly mosaic. You will be able to look at intriguing insects through a microscope and test out the temperature of different colours. There is no extra charge for this activity. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. These activities may change at short notice, no booking required. Usually takes place 11am - 4pm on Fridays from the end of July to the end of August. You will need basic equipment like balls, tablespoons, (egg and spoon races), scarves (to tie up legs for a three legged race), tunnel to crawl through etc, plus a pile of kids and a nice big space in the garden or in the local park. Younger children may prefer a Garden Obstacle course Line up 4 or 5 chairs for children to wriggle under, followed by a paddling pool to splash through, place bricks at intervals for kids to use as stepping stones, arrange a rope in a twirly shape to tip toe through and set out bin bags to have a sack race and a football to kick or bounce ten times.

5. Set yourself a reading challenge If you read at least six books this summer holidays you can collect prizes from your local library. Open to ages 4-11, for pre-schoolers there is a mini-challenge. This year they are also trying to break the world record to get the most children registered to take part in the challenge. An outdoor blackboard will encourage all sorts of games and creativity. All you need is a piece of board, ideally marine plywood, cut to the size you require, and some blackboard paint, Once painted, the board can be fixed to your house wall, fence or shed. Keep chalks in a waterproof box, ready for drawing, writing, treasure hunt maps, instructions, or scoring.

Brighton’s Big Screen announces its return for 2015 with a movie line-up jam packed with blockbuster, classic and family movies. 12. Go crabbing
Summer Time 12. Go Crabbing We are so lucky to live by the seaside and we have some amazing crabbing spots along our coast – all you need is a bucket, a piece of twine, some ham and a fishing net to scoop them up with. Crabbing is a really fun and free day out with the family, the crabs should be returned the water and not kept in your bucket for too long especially if it’s a hot day. for a fun family walk and help protect your paths Families in the South East are being encouraged to step out for a stroll this summer and help protect the places they love to walk along the way as part of the Ramblers’ Big Pathwatch. The Ramblers is asking families to head out and walk their favourite paths in the South East and report back on what they find using a smartphone app. To make this fun for children, the walking experts have created fun, free activity sheets that families can download and take out on their ramble. Not only is walking good exercise for all the family, it’s also a great way to tempt children away from the Xbox or TV and help them learn all about the great outdoors. The Big Pathwatch activity sheets are the perfect way to turn a normal walk around the local area into a fun family adventure. www.ramblers.org.uk
This 90 acre site, created from a former brickworks, has level surfaced paths which provide an easy-going lakeside walk. It offers a selection of outdoor activities including Dinosaur Island’ a brand new adventure play area for the Country Park, featuring special effects such as an active volcano, red hot lava flows, tar quagmire, dinosaur swamp and prehistoric jungle. Children of all ages and abilities will be able to cross dinosaur bones and deadly swampland, swing through the jungle, climb the volcano, zip wire across lizard infested ditches and traverse aerial walkways along sheer slopes to look out over the Country Park. An orienteering course, tuition in canoeing and sailing plus a small beach area for swimming. The park also includes a beautiful wildlife area ‘The Quarry’, which is managed for nature conservation and supports wildlife such as lizards, Kingfishers, Nightingales and various butterflies and dragonflies. The Visitor Centre offers information, toilets and a cafe and is open every day of the year except Christmas Day. The opening hours are: April - September 10am 5pm. Conducted by the all new Stage by the Sea, this free annual Littlehampton family event with a Punch & Judy Show is great for families with that competitive edge. Registration starts at 11am with the competition taking place between 12-1pm. Harbour Park’s Sandy Castle will be there to help judge the three categories – under 5’s, under 11’s and 11+ with great prizes to be won. Although we live by the seaside, sometimes we don’t want to go to the beach or maybe your child is not keen on the sand and stones. Then why not try a lido – Arundel, Hove, Brighton, Findon, Lewes all have lidos and don’t forget your parks with paddling pools which can bring just as much enjoyment and are FREE!

In January this year a new Worthing based fitness group, Your Next Move, was founded by passionate local athletes, Emma Macready and Martin Footman.

Despite being voted the top capital city (19 %) for a family holiday, 70% of UK parents haven’t visited London with their children!
The top reason (38 %) that parents overlook London for a family holiday is that it’s perceived to be too expensive, however 50% of the top ten London experiences for kids to try before they’re 12 years old are actually free With the summer holidays around the corner, a survey has shown that despite a wealth of culture and top attractions, our capital city is being overlooked by UK families as an option for a break away, as many people think it is too expensive. Many parents assume that London museums charge for entry, however top attractions such as the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum visit are actually have free general admission all year round. Also parents think London hotels don’t cater for families when in actual fact there are many family-friendly hotels offering great value room packages during school holidays.
