Protect little feet from the cold Autumn is definitely here and Winter is not far away! The annual Christmas Fayre, organised by the PTA, takes place at the school on Saturday 19th November with everyone welcome to come along and enjoy some festive shopping. A variety of stalls will sell gifts, including jewellery, bags, scarfs and candles, and there will also be a raffle, home-baking, refreshments and games for children. The Fayre takes place between 10am and 2pm in the Dining Hall. The following month, Beaconhurst hosts its annual Carol Concert performed by the School Choir at St Columba’s Church, Stirling. The Concert is on Thursday 8th December from 7-9pm with funds being raised for one of the local charities supported by the school. Christmas Memorial Service

A unique gift this Christmas…..

A Christmas memorial service for families who have experienced the trauma of losing a baby is being held in Stirling. The service will take place in St Mary’s Church, Upper Bridge Street, FK8 1ES on Friday 9th December at 7.30pm. The Lights of Love event is being organised by Forth Valley Sands (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death charity) and provides parents the opportunity to come together and acknowledge the lives of their babies at this difficult time of year. The Scottish Cot Death Trust will also be taking part in the service.

Edible Christmas gifts you can make with your kids Christmas cookies in a jar

This is a lovely gift as the jar can be used again and it’s full of yummy, Christmassy biscuits too. You will need: • 250g soft butter or margarine • 140g caster sugar • 1 egg • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 300g plain flour • Quarter tsp ground cinnamon and pinch of ground star anise • Quarter tsp nutmeg To decorate: • Icing sugar • Water • Lemon juice Method: Cream together the butter and sugar, then add the yolk from the egg and the vanilla extract. Gradually add the flour and keep mixing until it forms a ball of dough. Kids can do this with their hands. Next, roll the dough out on a floured surface and use a variety of Christmas cookie cutters to make the shapes – stars, diamonds and hearts are all good. Bake for 12-15 minutes (gas 4, 190 C 375 F). Once cool, mix the icing sugar with a teaspoon of lemon juice and a little water, until it is easy to pour but still thick. Use a piping bag to make decorations on each and leave to dry in a cool place. Finally, place a selection of the cookies into a Kilner jar and decorate with a Christmas ribbon, bells and a label.

Snowballs

Everyone loves chocolate and these little snowball shaped truffles are great as a Christmas themed treat. • • • • •

2 tbsp double cream 200g good white chocolate, chopped Half tsp vanilla extract 2 tbsp desiccated coconut Mini cake cases

Method: Put the chocolate pieces in a pudding basin and set it over a pan of hot water, with the double cream. Bring to a simmer and then turn the heat down low.You’ll need to supervise your child at this stage, as steam can burn. Stir with a wooden spoon until the chocolate has melted into the cream. Add the vanilla, take off the heat and chill for one hour. It should then be firm but still loose enough to work with. With a teaspoon, each take a small amount of the chocolate paste and roll it in a ball between your palms. Then roll it in the coconut and you have little snowball shaped truffles. Place each completed one inside a mini cake case. Pop some inside a jam jar to give as a gift .

Favourite child friendly restaurant We all love The Riverside in Dunblane. The menu’s got a good choice and the staff are always very friendly to the children. It’s also great that it’s got the children’s room downstairs for meeting friends.

Favourite shop We’re so lucky to have a really thriving High Street in Dunblane – it’s difficult to choose a favourite shop. From Charisma for gifts, Ruby Ruby for children’s shoes, Neroli for beauty treatments and products to John Hill Butchers and Dunlop’s fruit and veg, it’s great! Favourite park I love taking the children to the Laighhills park in Dunblane, there’s a football pitch and skate park which the boys enjoy and Flora loves the slides on the hill.

Favourite day out The cycle path to Doune from Dunblane High always goes down well especially with the promise of cake in The Beech Tree café afterwards! Briarlands is always a winner as there’s something for everyone especially if the strawberry picking’s open too.

Best planet saving tip I try and cycle rather than take the car if possible, it can still be pretty quick and gives me a bit of exercise too. No parent should be without A sense of humour Parenting pet hates The clear up after meal times, it always amazes me how far crumbs can be spread over the kitchen.

Funniest comment your kids have ever made I always wish I’d written things down at the time, there’s so many times I’m giggling about something one of them has said but can never remember when asked! Most loved children’s book I always love reading Julia Donaldson’s books to the children, Flora and I love The Paper Dolls at the moment. A favourite for the boys’ has always been Manfred The Baddie by John Fardell Best children DVD or tele programme Mr Bean has the boys in stitches. If we’re watching a film, Flora and I love Frozen. Topsy and Tim is also a favourite, especially if I need to get a few jobs done! Most played with toys Lego is a real favourite in our house, the boys play with it for hours. For Flora it’s her baby dolls and buggies. Most successful recipe/food I like making risotto as it’s a brilliant (and fairly healthy) way of using up leftover veg and roast chicken.
