Try walking in Fife today W

alking is an affordable and easy activity requiring no specific equipment which can help to increase quality of life. Fife Coast and Countryside Trust have over 340km of paths across Fife which, linked with the Core Path Network, can help you get started on your walking adventure. In Scotland, the health risks linked to inactivity are shocking - 7 Scots die every day due to inactivity, often long before they have to. Physical inactivity costs the NHS in Scotland over £90 million annually and it is estimated that getting active through walking, could increase life expectancy by more than a year. There is also a huge return on investment into walking facilities. Evidence shows a return of approximately £8 for every £1 invested in path development projects, which lessens the burden on the NHS and can free up funding for social care, education and other vital services. So walking helps the community, but how does walking help you?

Forbes of Kingennie

inding a holiday destination that is both luxurious and child friendly but also not too far away can be a daunting task. Until I found the gorgeous Forbes of Kingennie Country Resort. When we arrived at the resort after only one ‘are we nearly there yet’, we were taken aback by the sparkly water and surrounding lodges. We were staying in the Bard’s Neuk lodge set just back from the water and a short walk to all facilities. As we pulled up, the kids commented it looked like a castle. They rushed in ahead of us and explored the 3 huge bedrooms (including a four poster bed in the main bedroom), lovely kitchen and living room. On the first full day, my oldest 2 children had a fishing lesson. It was taken by a really helpful man who knew all the answers to my children’s crazy questions! We never caught anything as the children were too busy enjoying casting the rods, but it was still a lot of fun. We also tried out the maze and putting on site. Both were loved by the children. The maze has high beach hedges which allows for no cheating! And a one way gated barrier in means the only way out is to find the exit. The putting is made up of mini munros, glens and lochs and is great fun even when

the ball falls into the water several times and has to be rescued by the net (although I think my son was doing this deliberately)! The location of the resort is perfect, 2 miles from Monifieth, only 4 miles from Dundee and right in the middle of the countryside. Dundee hosts great family days out including the fabulous Olympia swimming pool, the science centre, Camperdown Country Park and Wildlife Centre, and Discovery Point. The city centre also has lots of great shops, perfect for the children to spend their holiday money. There is a park on site which amused my 3 for a while. But for more adventure, there are some fabulous parks along the coast, especially Carnoustie with a water section great for Summer. Monikie and Crombie Country Parks are also within 10 minutes drive and have great trails to follow and fantastic adventure playgrounds. We also ate at the on site restaurant and were taken aback at how good the service and food were and at very reasonable prices. There is also a toy corner which kept the children amused between courses. If you are having a holiday in Scotland this year, or want to spend a weekend of quality family time together and don’t want to venture too far, Forbes of Kingennie should be top of the list . 

My name is Avril Fulton and I have 4 grandchildren. My son, David, has 2 children, Ben is 13 and Esme is 9. My daughter, Genna, also has 2 children, Imogen is nearly 5 and Murray is nearly 3. We’re very fortunate as we live quite near them and have the pleasure of looking after Imogen and Murray one day per week and Ben and Esme during school holidays. I live with my husband, Steve, in Bridge of Earn, and since retiring from a very rewarding career in Primary School Teaching, I have started running my own business - Little Blooms UK, classes for preschool children age 2-5, learning all about Nature and Gardening. play, craft and story. Each week they take home their plant and their craft and parents take away ideas to try out at home or in the garden. Sessions are both educational and fun, an opportunity to socialise and most definitely value for money Favourite day out: We love taking all 4 grandchildren to Active Kids near Stanley as there’s such a huge adventure park with a variety of play activities for all ages, animals to see and a brilliant cafe, toy shop and indoor soft play area. Favourite child friendly restaurant : The Bothy in Perth has a great children’s menu with proper home made food, 2 courses for £4.95. 3 scoops of Arran ice-cream proved too much for them and I had to help them out - Yum! Favourite night out without the kids. The Roost Restaurant in Bridge of Earn - splendid fine dining on our doorstep, well worth a visit. Proudest eco-friendly moment: When I was chairman of the local Bloom Group and we won the Biodiversity Award for Scotland.

Best planet saving tip: All food waste should go into the brown lidded bin and this goes through a process which turns it into compost and you can fill a couple of bags each time you visit the Friarton Recycling Centre for free. No parent should be without: A nice bottle of Prosecco chilling in the fridge! Favourite family holiday spot: Center Parcs - fantastic indoor and outdoor activities for families. The island of Gigha is another favourite as it’s such a beautiful island where you can relax, go for bike rides, go fishing, play on the beach and have a nice meal at the Gigha Hotel. Parenting pet hates: Getting up during the night! Most loved children’s book: Stick Man by Julia Donaldson Best children’s DVD: Malificent Most played with toys:Dressing up clothes, lego and play dough (homemade) Biggest waste of money: Buying bottled water - we are so lucky in this country to have clean, safe drinking water simply by turning on the tap. 

Why you like living where you do? In Bridge of Earn, we have the best of both worlds, as we are very close to a network of motorways and close proximity to Perth but the village is semi-rural so there are lots of lovely walks such as the Silver Walk, Dunbarney Walk, a walk along by the Deich Burn where you might be lucky enough to see the beavers and lots of other wildlife. There’s also a Snowdrop Walk through the grounds of Kilgraston School in February. There are 2 parks, Victory Park and a smaller park in Kintillo both of which were upgraded in recent years. The local church runs Chatterbox for parents with babies/ children 0-3. Playgroup and Mother & Toddler Group meet in the Institute and for school aged children there are tennis courts, junior bowling, football clubs and Uniformed Organisations. Dunbarney Primary School has a nursery and there is also Doodle Bugs Nursery who provide childcare from 8am6pm Monday to Friday. Favourite shop : Ikea - I can happily spend a whole day there shopping for the house or for Little Blooms and my other favourite shop is Glendoick Garden Centre - range of quality plants, gifts, jewellery, clothes, a really good cafe and a great range of toys and books for children. I also love Waterstones for children’s books and Fun Junction for toys and books. Favourite park: MacRosty Park in Crieff really well designed with activities for all ages of children including water, trampolines, climbing wall, sand, mini diggers and a 30 foot double flying fox. Favourite children’s club/class: Imogen and Murray love Little Blooms class at Oakbank Community Centre, Perth on a Monday afternoon as it’s packed with activities related to Nature and Gardening with a different theme each week. Activities include songs, rhymes, planting, sensory

ÊWealthy Ê Walking is free! If you replace one bus or car journey every week with a walk, you will soon see the financial benefits. ÊHealthy Ê The Stroke Association says that a brisk 30-minute walk every day helps to prevent and control the high blood pressure that causes strokes, reducing the risk by up to 27 percent. Walking regularly can also cut the risk of type 2 diabetes and many types of cancer. There are even studies which show that regular walking can slow the onset of dementia. A lack of vitamin D affects many people in the UK, which has an impact on bone health and the immune system. Get outdoors and get your daily vitamin D hit. ÊSmart Ê Everyone knows having more energy helps you achieve more and walking is the perfect natural energiser. While you walk, your circulation improves and in turn, increases oxygen supply to every cell in your body, helping you to feel more alert. A brisk walk on your lunch break could help you have a

more productive afternoon. Our 40 sites offer a huge range of walking experiences for everyone. Local Nature Reserves provide wild spaces where plants and animals, both common and rare, can thrive. In particular the reserves also offer unique opportunities to explore or study your local nature, or to simply enjoy a gentle walk. Great places to start include Coul Den in Glenrothes, Birnie Gaddon Lochs

near Collessie and Dalbeath Marsh near Cowedenbeath which are easy walks of around a mile in beautiful settings. If you prefer the coast, the Fife Coastal Path is Scotland’s oldest and longest and covers 117 miles through rich and varied landscapes from the Firth of Forth to the Firth of Tay. There are fifty one businesses along the Coastal Path which are designated Welcome Ports, offering information, advice and a range of facilities which can include catering, toilets and water for your dog. We also care for 14 beaches along Fife’s Fringe of Gold and they offer windswept walks along deserted sands to full on family fun. Regardless of the weather, beaches are great places to explore from beach combing to rock pooling and paddling to photography. A brisk walk along the sands is a great way to energise too. So whatever your reasons for getting out there, Fife’s fabulous coast & countryside offers you everything you’ll ever need. 

The great Easter egg hunt Keep up this fun tradition with your children this Easter By Sally J. Hall

aster means different things to different people. But for the kids it is quite simple; it means time off school and plenty of Easter eggs! So why not organise an Easter Egg Hunt with your children and their friends? Here’s how to make this year’s Easter’s egg hunt one that will be talked about for years to come.

What is an Easter Egg Hunt?

The day before Easter Sunday, the grown-ups hide eggs and other treats around the house. Then the kids have to find them on Easter morning. For many parents, the planning is almost as much fun as watching the kids finding the eggs and you can make it as simple or as complex as you like. First, the shopping list ÊÊ Buy a few eggs per child. Look for packs that are cheaper than individual eggs. ÊÊ Find holders for the children to collect the eggs in such as paper bags, baskets plastic bowls or flower pots. ÊÊ Perhaps buy some small gifts as well as eggs - books or colouring pens. ÊÊ Make a list of where you have hidden all the eggs.

Some nice ideas to do the day before, especially if it’s raining

Get the children to decorate the holders they will collect the eggs in. Decorate paper bags, line baskets with straw and tie on a ribbon and add a label with the child’s name on it to the pots.

Where can you do an Easter Egg hunt?

At home, inside the house. Great if the weather’s bad. Lock rooms that you don’t want the children in. In the garden. If it’s fine, this is ideal. Put the eggs out in the morning. Why not make bunny footprints from flour or talc near each hidden egg?

In the woods. If you live near some open space, gather the kids in one area until the adults have planted the eggs and clues. Then let them loose!

Some ground rules

So that the children all feel they have been treated fairly and for safety, it’s important to have some rules. ÊÊ When they have collected three eggs, they must come back to ‘base’ before going off again. ÊÊ Give the kids clear boundaries that they must not stray outside. If you’re outdoors, place small kids with grown-ups or older children for safety. ÊÊ Help kids get a fair share by collecting different colour eggs each –wrap them in coloured paper. Make those for the small kids easier to spot. ÊÊGet older children to help younger ones. ÊÊ Don’t allow the kids to eat the eggs as they find them – they have to bring them all back to base. ÊÊ Once the game is over, allow them to eat one or two and then the rest should be taken home.

Make it better

Make it more fun with activities along the way. Tell an Easter themed story, or play some games.

Give us a clue

Add an extra dimension with clues. You could also make a treasure map for them to follow. Think of a theme; numbered pictures of bunnies, pirates looking for buried treasure, fairies looking for magic eggs.  A number of local attractions including National Trust for Scotland properties have Easter Egg Hunts and activities, so check out those local to you.

Egg Bunting

You’ll need: 1 hard-boiled egg, Yellow and white felt, PVA glue, Felt tips pens in yellow, orange and black 1. Take a freshly cooked and cooled hardboiled egg. 2. Cut shapes for the bunny’s feet and hands out of the yellow felt; then cut larger ears shapes out of yellow felt and smaller ones from the white. 3. Stick the feet on the base of the egg, making sure the egg can stand upright on them. 4. Stick the white ears onto the yellow and when they have dried a little, stick them on to the rear of where the face will be. 5. Finally, draw a rabbit’s face on the front of the egg with the pens and decorate with patterns as your child likes.

You’ll need: Plain white paper, Poster paints, Stickers, Glitter, Glue, Scraps of paper, fabric and wool, Mini pegs, String 1. Cut out lots of Easter egg shapes from the paper 2. Get the kids to use paint to create patterns on the eggs; stripes and circles work well. 3. Next, use the scraps of craft fabrics and stickers to make the eggs even more decorative. 4. Use some glue to create lines or shapes and scatter the glitter for the final touch. 5. When the egg shapes are dry, hang them on a piece of string with the colourful pegs. If you can’t find pegs, use coloured paper clips or simply thread the string through a hole in the top of each egg. 

ust in time for Easter, I have been sent a great new Playmobil Easter Egg. We have loved Playmobil in our house for a long time and they have loads of great sets. But we have never tried the Easter range. We were sent the set 4945 Pirate on a Treasure Hunt (other sets are available). Harris (age 5) was the tester and absolutely loved it.

The set is great and very east and fast to put together. Harris was able to put it together and play with it in no time. Another plus is that the egg then becomes a great money box. t Andrews is home to Scotland’s oldest University, founded between 1410 and 1414 so if you want to find out more about the University, its stories and its treasures, then MUSA is a good place to begin! It is also a fantastic destination for families, offering hands-on exhibits for children in all four galleries, baby changing facilities, easy access for buggies and a panoramic view of St Andrews Bay from the first-floor Viewing Terrace, where the talking telescope and sundial are both worth a look. Kids will also enjoy the spooky plaster cast skull of Pope Benedict XIII, the flashy silver archery medals and the chance to dress up as students in mini gowns. ommunity Use Schools in Dunfermline have established a unique player pathway which allows kids to develop from Mini-Kickers to the Fife Soccer Sevens. Kids as young as 3 years can start training indoors at Queen Anne (01383 602351) or Dunfermline High (01383 602348) on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays. Once they are old enough for school, young players move up to our Primary 1, 2 and 3 classes. These sessions also take place indoors where our experienced SFAqualified Coaches focus on individual skills development as well as introducing the fundamentals of teamwork. When the children reach Primary 4, they move out to our 3G astro pitch on a Monday

evening where they will continue to receive structured coaching. At this point, they will become part of Duloch Boys Club. Through this unique partnership with our friends at Duloch, the kids will start playing 7-a-side friendlies before eventually joining the fantastic Fife Soccer Sevens set up. Our first team of Primary 4 players started training and playing outdoors in August. They are now playing competitive 7 v 7 games in a winter league at Dunfermline High every Sunday. Most of the kids have been attending Community Use football coaching together since the age of three so not only are they good players but they are great friends too! We hope this bond will drive them on to success on the pitch and in life. 
