New expressive arts opportunities at Beaconhurst School

Look out for the launch of the fantastic new families website in early July.

Exciting new developments at Beaconhurst School will give pupils the chance to get involved in the Expressive Arts from nursery onwards. The independent Bridge of Allan school is developing a learning pathway to enhance dramatic skills and opportunities and has appointed experienced drama teacher Alison Marshall as Director of Expressive Arts to lead the way. Ms Marshall is passionate about the Arts and has taught the subject for 25 years as well as being involved in producing, writing and acting in theatrical productions. Life changing approach to Dyslexia Teacher and former Headteacher, Fiona Macdiarmid – known to many Stirling parents as Centre Director of Stirling’s popular Kip McGrath tuition centre – believes Cellfield, a programme to help people overcome dyslexia and similar processing difficulties, is the most exciting development in education she has come across during her 30 year career. Woodcraft Folk

Woodcraft Folk is a national organisation that aims to develop children and young people’s self confidence and awareness of the world, encouraging equality, friendship and co-operation. We run weekly groups, weekend trips and summer camps. In Stirling we run an Elfin group for children aged 6 to 9 and a Pioneer group for ages 9 to 12. Both groups meet at Stirling High School on Thursdays from 6 to 7:15pm, term time. In Falkirk we run an Elfin group for children aged 5 to 10. This group meets at Bantaskin Primary School on Wednesdays from 6:15 to 7:15pm, term time. Both groups welcome new children and young people. You will need: • 3 thin plastic straws • Mixture of fruit such as grapes, strawberries, kiwi fruit, pineapple, banana, apple • Lemon or lime juice How to make: 1. Cut the larger fruit into squares and squeeze some lime or lemon juice over them to prevent them from going brown. 2. Push the straws through the pieces of fruit one at a time – make sure you mix up the colours to make it look extra special.

Healthy Banana Granola Bars These tasty bars are full of protein thanks to the hidden gems; quinoa and chia seeds. You will need: • 120g oats • 2 mashed bananas • 60g quinoa • ¼ tsp salt • 1 tsp cinnamon • 2 tbsp chia seeds • ½ tsp vanilla extract • 30g chopped almonds • 30g chopped pecans • 40g dried cranberries • 50g butter or margarine • 2 tbsp honey

How to make: 1. 1Heat the oven to 350F degrees / 180C / Gas 4. 2. Grease and line a baking tray roughly 20cm square. 3. Mix together the quinoa, chiaseeds, salt and cinnamon with the oats in a large bowl. Add the mashed banana and vanilla and then the nuts and dried fruit. 4. In a small saucepan, melt the butter or margarine over a low heat and add the honey. When melted, fold in to the granola mixture. Pour into the pan and press it down until it is level. 5. Bake for 20-25 minutes. 6. Cut into fingers while still warm and leave to cool completely.

Hi, My name is Amanda Cunningham. I have been married to David for 9 years and we have 2 boys, John, 6 and Finlay, 4. I am Chairmum of Lochgreen Playgroup and a stay at home mum. David is Chief Engineer on a Dive Support boat.We have lived in Falkirk for 10 years. Lochgreen Playgroup in Falkirk has been providing community childcare for over 45 years but unfortunately this will be its last year and we will be closing our doors for the last time at the end of June. It’s been a really brilliant place to be involved with and I think Lochgreen should be very proud of what it has achieved for the community. I would like to thank all the parents who have supported us over the many years of it’s running. Also to the staff who have been very loyal and for whom Lochgreen has become more than just a job. Why you like living where you do? We live in the Lionthorn area of Falkirk. This area is right on the edge of town and on our doorstep we have the Lionthorn Community Woodland which the boys love to visit. We build dens, paddle in the stream and cycle the mountain bike tracks of Callendar Estate. The area is very friendly, there are lots of young families so we are always meeting other children from school and nursery in the park. Favourite shop I try to shop locally when I can. I particularly like Hogan’s Fine Foods who are based in Stenhousemuir. They provide fresh, locally produced and seasonal fruit and vegetables plus other yummy delights.

Favourite child friendly restaurant We are regulars for lunch at The Milk Barn in Falkirk which is a working dairy farm with its own cafe and ice cream parlour. They make their own delicious ice cream with traditional and some crazy flavours. Proudest eco-friendly moment We had solar panels installed a few years ago. They generate enough electricity to run the household appliances during most days and we are paid for what we export to the grid. Even in Scotland they are worth the investment. No parent should be without A cordless hoover. A recent purchase for us but one I now couldn’t do without, especially good for a quick hoover up after messy mealtimes.

Favourite park We enjoy Dollar Park. The play area is perfect for Finlay but there are also some brilliant climbing trees, fun for the kids, not so good for my nerves.

Parenting pet hates I dislike the trend of ‘perfect parenting’ as I call it. Social media has a great deal to answer for when it comes to setting ourselves high standards. I am just as guilty, taking lots of photos of the kids only to post the perfect one on the internet. Let’s admit it, we all do it! Being a full time mum to two energy filled boys is sometimes hard going. I’m not ashamed to admit it. Blogs like The Unmumsy Mum are a breath of fresh air.

Favourite children’s club/class Of course we have been going to Lochgreen Playgroup since the children were babies but we also attend swimming lessons with Mighty Swimmers. They teach the children to swim without floats so Finlay has been able to swim unaided since he

the aisle seemed to be overly interested in the produce on the shelves. I hope it wasn’t on CCTV! Most loved children’s book ‘The dinosaur that pooped Christmas’ by Tom Fletcher and Dougie Poynter. John and Finlay roll around on the floor laughing when I read it. They are typical boys and love the toilet humour. Most played with toys Lego. They play with it every single day. Any other comment Finlay attends a weekly forest school with a company called Under the Trees while at Wellside Kindergarten. Under the Trees also run a monthly Nature Club based in Callendar Park, family events and a holiday club. Sessions include den building, outdoor crafts, tree climbing, muddy mayhem, bug hunts and lots more. Summer holidays feature How to keep your child’s brain ticking over the summer holidays By Liat Hughes Joshi

he long summer holidays are a well-earned break; a time for kids to spend whole mornings in their PJs, to build dens, go on endless outings and enjoy a ride on their bikes in the park. But the downside of such a lengthy spell away from school is that learning can slip back significantly, with children often forgetting some of the skills they have learnt. The good news is that we’ve got plenty of ways to prevent this so-called ‘summer slide’. This is largely fun stuff and there’s no need to capitalise all of their, or indeed your, time. Don’t panic, July and August won’t become some sort of temporary home school project and besides, they’re likely to be awake 12 to 14 hours a day, so even half an hour of learning still leaves masses of time for kicking back and relaxing…

1. Head to the library for the Summer Reading Challenge This popular scheme runs every summer in almost all public libraries across the UK and is designed to encourage children to read throughout the holidays. Usually, those who finish at least six books over the sixweek period receive badges, rewards and a certificate at the end, with some schools choosing to hand these out in assembly at the start of the new academic year. Even better: it’s all completely free! Check out the Summer Reading Challenge website for more information, as well as children’s book-related news, chat and competitions. http://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/ 2. Send some postcards Get your children to share their holiday news with grandparents or friends via good oldfashioned postcards. You could agree a swap with their best friends before heading off for any trips. Younger schoolage pupils can practice their letter formation, whilst older ones can look at incorporating some exciting vocabulary into their messages. For keen writers, perhaps find a pen pal – this could even be a cousin who lives far away. 3. Break out the board games and prop open the puzzle books Board games are ideal for those inevitable-toa-British-summer rainy days and many of the more traditional options incorporate maths. For reception children, work out their counting with Kerplunk (they’ll need to check who has the most sticks and the difference) and Snakes and Ladders. For junior school age kids, Monopoly

requires dealing with money and addition, subtraction and multiplication. Meanwhile, Sudoku, word search and logic problem books are all brilliant brain stretchers for times when a more solitary activity is needed.

4. Keep a holiday scrapbook Head to the stationery shop and choose a funky diary or scrapbook and some pens or pencils, then get them started with keeping a record of their most exciting moments of the summer. For younger writers, even a word or sentence under a picture or stuck-in memento is a start, whilst older children might want to put pen to paper and turn the scrap book into a lengthier journal. 5. Sneak stealth learning into everyday activities Daily life is full of sneaky little educational opportunities – some so subtle that your children will barely notice what you’re up to. It might be weighing and measuring ingredients when baking cakes, dividing the bill between families in a restaurant, or budgeting in the toy shop. If you get too into this, the kids will inevitably spot what you’re doing and complain, but now and then and you should get away with it. 6. Start a blog Tap into an older child’s interests and suggest they set up a blog about it – it could be sports-related, about cooking or outings they’ve been on. If you’re worried about internet safety, just keep it anonymous or filter out any messages and comments yourself. Another option is to keep the blog private and not actually publish it – they can still show it to friends. You never know, they could be the next internet blogging sensation… 7. Ready, get set, go for some Olympic-themed learning 2016 is an Olympic year, so combine boosting interest in sport with some maths and literacy. Ideas include reading the sports section of the paper or setting up their own medal winners’ league table by country. You could also pick a medal winner’s country each day to research together and find a few facts about. 8. Work on non-academic skills that are useful too With much less going on compared to term time, the holidays are a perfect opportunity to work on age-appropriate skills your child could do with picking up or honing. Improving their swimming, doing their shoelaces up, or getting used to becoming a shade more independent by, say, walking to post a letter or to the corner shop, are all worthwhile ideas. Stirling’s famous landmark is a great day out for all the family. When the kids are ready to let off steam – make tracks for Loch Katrine! There’s always something memorable about family days out in the great outdoors- and when it comes to finding spaces for adventure – they don’t come on a much grander scale than The Great Trossachs Forest! Stirling, Falkirk and Clacks libraries are gearing up for The Big Friendly Read to inspire young readers to explore some of the many marvellous books penned by Roald Dahl as part of the Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge Scotland. The annual Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge Scotland, run in partnership with Scottish libraries and The Reading Agency, encourages children (aged between 4 and 11) to read six or more library books of their choice during the summer holidays with collectable incentives and rewards, plus a certificate, or medal for every child who completes the Challenge. Children can sign up at their local library at the start of the summer holidays; it’s absolutely free - and pre-schoolers can take part in the mini-Challenge. Incorporate homework into a routine Many children benefit from having a set homework time - they’re somewhat less likely to push back if it is just what happens at 5pm. However you might both prefer homework to be completed at the earliest opportunity so they can go off and relax, or favour a spell of winding down after school – simply see what works for your child. If, like many primary schoolers, they only get one or two pieces of homework a week, it might be best to tackle it at the weekend when they’re not tired from school. Help, yes, but don’t do it for them! As a parent your key role is to ensure that your child has somewhere comfortable and quiet to do their homework and the items required, e.g. a dictionary or ruler. You may also need to clarify what a question means or provide support if they’re stuck. But do remember it’s their homework not yours – if you’re having to do it all for them on a regular basis, it may be too difficult for your little one - discuss this with their teacher.

How much is too much? Most primary age children will get 30 to 60 minutes a week plus reading and perhaps spellings and times tables. If you think your child is being set too much homework, again, it’s definitely worth having a chat with their teacher. Additionally, if it’s taking what you feel is an inappropriate amount of time on a particular day, don’t be afraid to stop and write him or her a note along the lines of ‘X spent an hour doing this and we felt it was enough’.
