The Cardboard Box Play Cafe is getting bigger and better! We have extended our opening hours and are now open five days a week. We have regular classes and weekly groups, including a Grandparent’s group every Tuesday. In January we ran our first series of photography workshops in conjunction with Picture the Possible, aimed at helping you get the best pictures of your children. Where movies and music come alive

The Hippodrome Festival of Silent Cinema has pulled out all the stops for its fifth birthday with a packed programme of rare and classic films from around the world including some wonderful new discoveries for audiences. A brilliant line-up of silent film accompanists from across the musical spectrum will bring the Hippodrome and new venues across town to life, confirming the Festival’s reputation for being ‘where movies and music come alive’. Highlights for all the family include a ‘Jeely Jar’ screening of Buster Keaton’s hilarious film The Navigator with fun family audience participation before the film, Festival favourites Laurel and Hardy in a triple bill and a Special Effects Workshop at Bo’ness Library for anyone aged 8 and over. Top great things to do this Easter

here are lots of great things happening locally this Easter, read on so you don’t miss out on any of them!!!

Wallace Monument - Braveheart 2015 1995 saw Stirling host the European premiere of the film which brought the story of William Wallace to millions - in 2015 the city’s National Wallace Monument will mark the 20th Anniversary of Braveheart with a programme of special events and activities, re-telling the story of the Scottish hero. Highlights of the programme include ‘In Wallace’s Footsteps’– a family event (April and June), when visitors can follow a trail on The Abbey Craig, setting out in search of the Scots army camp (as volunteers and recruits would have done before and after The Battle of Stirling Bridge), and ‘Tales from the Battlefield’, a presentation recreating the encounter between two soldiers who fought on opposite sides at the battle, and who meet in the woodlands around the Abbey Craig. Do they resume the fight – or do they realise that the battle is over? Performances will be taking place regularly from April through to September, including the Easter weekend (3rd to 6th April 2015). The Anniversary of the premiere will be celebrated in September (3rd to 7th) with a Braveheart Festival – a programme of special events at the Monument and in the University campus. Parsystemgolf, led by PGA golf coach Tim Mitchell, makes use of our on-campus par 3 golf course. The popular multisport camp aimed at children from the age of 6 – 8 years encourages maximum participation in a variety of sports throughout the week. New this year is the addition of our ‘teen gym’ programme. This is ideal for teenagers aged 13 – 15 years looking to gain confidence and knowledge in a gym environment. Guided by our supportive Fitness Officers, you will gain access to our state-of-the-art cardiovascular and conditioning equipment and build your perfect programme. Nursery feature How to choose the best nursery for your child

or many parents, nurseries are the ideal choice for childcare. They offer working hours, with a lot of flexibility - you can choose hours to suit you, from a few half days to full working weeks. Nurseries give children the opportunity to socialise with groups of other children and adults. They can also give a reassuring continuity of care, with an assigned key worker. Your child may be at the same setting from babyhood, right until they start at school. All children in Scotland aged three and four years old are eligible for a free parttime pre-school place (16 hours a week) and local authorities have a duty to ensure that enough places are available for all three and four year olds whose parents want them to attend. Additionally, the Scottish Government has expanded its provision to enable parents to work, train or study, and plans to introduce new early learning and childcare entitlements. As well as providing 600 hours per year of childcare for 3 and 4 year olds, 2 year olds under a care order or with a parent appointed guardian and 2 year olds with a parent in receipt of qualifying benefits will also receive funded childcare. Finding the right nursery can be a difficult and stressful process. The first time you hand over full-time care of your precious offspring to someone else is always going to be emotional, so you want to be absolutely sure that you have made the right choice for all of you.

Your first visit

Make time to look around potential nurseries, well before you are going to need to use them. Read the Education Scotland report on your selected nursery (www. educationscotland.gov.uk/ inspectionandreview/reports/ school/ ) and make a list of your priorities before you go. See if you can find out any first hand information from friends (though bear in mind what’s good for one family might not work for another).

Things to consider: Staff and ethos

See what the turnover of staff is (always a good indicator of happiness) and check their qualifications. The presence of older staff members brings added life experience and suggests that the nursery values its staff enough to pay for this. Check out the routines, such as what food they offer and when it’s served, or when and where the children can nap.

Cost

Be realistic in how much you can pay. A perfect work-life balance doesn’t mean working more hours to pay for a ‘better’ nursery! Some nurseries can provide full-time childcare, some time of which is funded. Many employers offer Childcare Vouchers which can be worth more than £1000 a year in tax and NI savings. You may also be eligible for childcare tax credits, to find out more go to www.gov.uk/help-with-childcare-costs

The ‘feel’ of the place

Going by gut instinct alone isn’t advisable, but if you don’t get a good feeling, it might not be the place for your child.

Happy staff and children can make up for a lack of perfection in other areas. Look out for children’s work on the walls, and staff who actually play with the youngsters rather than stand around chatting.

Your child’s personality

Is your child quiet and shy, or loud and outgoing? Do they love playing outdoors, or prefer indoor games? It seems obvious, but try to match the nursery to your child’s interests.

Your own needs!

There might be a wonderful nursery a half-hour drive away from you, but consider how will both of your tiredness levels be after this daily journey - would you be better to find somewhere closer that is a good fit? Equally the most convenient may not be the best for your child.Consider all your options carefully.

Why do you like living where you do We all love living in Falkirk and moved here from Glasgow 9 years ago. Falkirk is very family focused and we couldn’t see ourselves living anywhere else now. Favourite children’s club/class Hartbeeps of course! The main reason I

fell in love with Hartbeeps was I could take both of my children to the same class even when Nathan was a baby. I went to Happy House and loved it so much we started classes in our own area, Falkirk and Stirling! Inky Tots are also great fun classes and the kids really enjoy getting messy! Katie even helped us celebrate Nathan’s birthday at an Inky class with t-shirts for everyone as party bags, although at last minute Nathan was ill so we celebrated with Emily and his friends for him. Emily has enjoyed Baby Ballet with Leanne in Falkirk, she attended from 2 years old and was a beautiful fairy in their summer show, it was a proud moment for us. She is now with Stenhouse Dance School and enjoying being in her big girl tap shoes. Favourite day out Blair Drummond Safari Park, Emily loves seeing the animals, the meerkats and sea lion show are her favourite attractions and on our last visit we saw the sea lion show twice back to back! But anywhere there are animals is a winner! We also love to go to The Riverside Museum in Glasgow, as both kids love Thomas and we have all been to ‘a Day out with Thomas’ at Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway, I can’t recommend it enough! Baristas have some children’s toys which Emily and Nathan have a great time with. Facilities are clean and well kept and the food is great. Not all car seats are the same…… My husband and I have been avid rally fans for forever, I guess you could say we are the ultimate boy racers! With three boys now it’s inevitable that car safety is a top priority in our house, when you see the damage turning too quickly on a bend or banging into another car can do - it really makes you think ‘we better make sure the kids are safe’. Car seat safety though, we have found to be a minefield, with so much choice out there and so many different prices how do you know what is the best? Well we learned very quickly when it comes to car seats price really does matter. It’s not a choice between the latest designer brand and the budget option - No, when it comes to car safety you pay for quality, you pay for the safest. So many times we’ve heard “they all pass the regulatory tests so they must be the same, right?” Wrong, they cost more because they have better technology and meet higher safety standards, they cost less because they are not proven in tests to be as safe as the more expensive ones. The best quality products have been tested to the extreme and surpass the current ‘minimum requirements’ to make them legal, and that’s why they cost more. These same manufacturers are pushing our governments to introduce better safety standards and regulations to protect our children. But it’s not just the make of the car seat that keeps your child safer it’s about choosing the right one for the stage of your children’s development and using it correctly. Here’s a few facts and golden rules to help you keep your little ones and big ones safe: Do you know? • It is compulsory for our children to be in a car seat from birth to the height of 135cm or 12 years old, whichever is sooner. • I-size is the latest regulation to be introduced and it makes it mandatory

for children to stay rearward facing to at least 15 months. In fact in some European countries four years is already mandatory. Isofix in your car is there for a reason “use it”. It’s estimated to be three times safer than using a seat belt fitted car seat, due to the risk of using or installing the car seat incorrectly. Only car seats that display the European Standard label R44/04 or i-size (ECE R129) may be legally sold. Second-hand car seats are not recommended - you just don’t know where they have been. If you do have to use a belted seat then check it daily to ensure the belt tension is as tight as it can be.

Keeping your baby and toddler safe • Infant carriers have a lifespan of around five years. Check the label and age of the seat before you buy! • It’s proven to be 80% safer to keep your baby rear facing for longer, up to four years. Why wait for regulations to catch up. • A hairline fracture, naked to the eye, makes a car seat unsafe. Car seats kept in the loft or garage for a few years can be just as dangerous as one involved in an accident. • Say no to snowsuits and thick coats – always apply the two finger rule, there should only ever be a finger width space between child’s body and their car seat straps. If not in an accident they can literally slip straight out of the car seat! • Always leave your carry handle up in the car. The handle acts as a roll-bar protection in an accident.

Keeping your big kid safe • ‘Ban the Booster’ - statistics show that 87% of accidents are typically either side impact or head on, a booster seat offers no protection in any kind of crash. Always buy a high-back car seat with the best side-impact protection you can afford. • How many times have you seen a primary school child without a car seat? 12 years old and a minimum of 135cm – our big kids aren’t any less precious than our baby’s. • The two-finger rule applies to big kids too! A few final points Granny and Grandpa’s car can be involved in an accident just as much as yours can. Spend your budget wisely – a good retailer will help you find the safest solution within your budget. You can be the safest driver in the world but you can’t control other drivers, be safe. Pirates and Princesses Parade in Falkirk Town Centre Falkirk’s annual Pirates and Princesses parade will be back in town. Captain Barbarossa’s and the crew will be meeting hopeful crew members on the High Street from 1.30pm. Visit the craft area at the steeple between 1-3pm for facepainting, hat making and mini glam makeovers. The parade starts from the bandstand area at 3.30pm followed by some Pirate capers.
