ell that’s the haul-idays over. Phew! What a relief. It’s over to you - oh wonderful educational establishments, to once more take control. I hereby hand in my resignation from my temporary secondment to the roles of Head of Entertainment and Outings, Catering Manager with Extra responsibility for Snacks, Dispute and Conflict Resolution Officer and Health and Safety Coordinator with Responsibility for Prevention of Overtiredness. I’m not sure what’s worse, working full time and having to farm children out to various clubs, activities, friends and family. Or being around all summer for the children…I’ll let your conscience decide…

Was I the only person that was disappointed at William and Kate’s name choice? I can’t believe they didn’t go for Andrew with a nod to where they’d actually fallen in love. Is there no romance left in this world? And just think of what it would have done for Families Fife? Imagine, if they’d decided to set up home, I mean palace, in St Andrews? Every baby paraphernalia company in the western world would be advertising in Families Fife…I would be living the ex pat dream in Mauritius.

Would I do that to my loyal readers?

Passport to the past with Doors Open Days

W

hat better excuse is there to get out and about with family than a visit to some of the places in the Doors Open Day event?

In Fife this year’s event takes place as follows: ÊSt Ê Andrews and east area - Sunday September 8th 2013 ÊKirkcaldy Ê and central area - Sunday September 15th 2013 ÊDunfermline Ê and west area - Sunday September 22nd 2013 Why not visit the Yellow Castle at Castle Brae in Newport, with its quirky miniature castle features. The owners are looking forward to hearing any stories about the buildings history their visitors might have!

Guided tours every half hour.

Many of the venues provide tours and a building in each area has a storyteller

to enhance your understanding of the bricks and mortar with tales, histories and mysteries of the building; Balmerino Abbey, Ravenscraig Walled Garden and Dunfermline City Chambers. Hunt them out!

And what’s more a Fife heritage book will be awarded to 100 children who correctly return a Passport after visiting three different Doors Open Day places anywhere across Fife. Jeans for genes day

ear your jeans on Jeans for Genes Day on 20 September and help change lives. In aid of Genetic Disorders UK, Jeans for Genes Day aims to change the world for children with genetic disorders, so get your school

together and raise money by wearing your jeans and donating £1. Individually, genetic disorders are rare but together they affect 1 in 25 children born in the UK - that’s more than 30,000 babies each year.

Fossil fuel-free festival fun

C

elebrate the beginning of Autumn at the Earthship Fife Visitor Centre.

The Earthship is hosting an off-grid music and storytelling festival for families on Saturday 28th September (6-9pm).

Adults and families are invited to come along to listen to musicians and storytellers sharing Autumnal songs, music and stories, all powered by the Centre’s renewable energy from the sun, wind and stream.

The Earthship Fife Visitor Centre by Kinghorn Loch is a unique building based on the principles of thermal mass and solar gain made out of earth-rammed tyres and other waste materials.

The Doorstep Bakery, Fife Diet and St Andrews Brewing Company will be providing their delicious local food and drink at this beautiful and relaxing setting beside Kinghorn Loch.

September. The day promises the same fun for all visitors however with a bouncy castle, a maze, tombola, and a big prize raffle with the chance to win a Kindle Fire.

The event is perfect for local children as there are lots of stalls with pocket money toys, second hand books and toys as well as games to take part in such as beat the goalie and Hook the Duck. There will also be interesting stalls to browse for parents.

Refreshments and home-baking stalls will complete a fun filled morning.

Proceeds to PTA to raise money for school equipment and educational support materials. ÊAutumn Ê Fayre Sat 7th September, Pitreavie Playgroup, 1-4pm Are hosting their Autumn fayre at the Dunfermline East Church. On from 1-4pm there will be lots going on for Families. Local messy play experts Doodle and Splat are hosting a creative craft corner and local toddler heroes Jo Jingles will be there to keep the little ones entertained. Paint-me-Pretty facepainter is also on hand to disguise willing children and there will be food and drink stalls – including Krispy Kreme donuts, Smallprint jewellery and family portrait photographer too. All proceeds to the playgroup to raise money for new equipment and trips. 

Parent to Parent Kelli and partner Kevin Kirk live in the picturesque village of Bankfoot just outside Perth with children Jamie 2 and Eilidh 10 months. Kelli is a working business mum who started Kirky Kids earlier this year. Kirky Kids aims to provide fun, creative, unique play sessions, birthday parties and workshops for children pre secondary school age.

Why do you like living where you do?

It has a real community feel and its nice to walk down the street and speak to people.

We live beside the shop, school and Bankfoot church centre it’s great!

Bankfoot is very child friendly with 3 parks, a fantastic church centre with a soft play area and excellent cafe not only that but we are not that far from Stewart Tower Dairy only a shop walk for amazing ice cream!

Favourite shop: I have to say B&M store because i always manage to find something to buy and excellent ideas for the kids. One of my latest purchases was a toy storage box which looks like a fire engine and the kids can also sit on the top!

Favourite park: Having two little ones my life is extremely busy and when not working i enjoy spending time at Active Kids, Stanley.

Favourite children’s club/class: Kirky Kids Messy Play of course! Also we attend the Bankfoot Mother & Toddlers.

Favourite day out: Recently we had a family day out to the Riverside Transport Museum in Glasgow.

It was brilliant there was so much to see

and do. Jamie loved looking at all the cars and I thought the way it was set out with the reconstructed street was extremely well done. Also it is free to visit with free parking just simply leave a donation.

Parenting pet hates: When people without children park in the parent and child spaces!!

Favourite family holiday spot: We had a holiday to Centre Parcs, Whinfell forest in April and as a family i think we will definitely go back. There were activities for everyone the setting is amazing and as the children grow there will be new and different things for them to try out and do.

Best children’s book: No Matter What, Debi Gliori – I feel when i read the story to the children i am relaying to them how i feel and that i will love them no matter what.

Best children DVD or video: I love Brave it shows children that they can create their own path in life and also the consequences of bad choices!

Most played with toys: In our house the most played with toys are tractors of all shapes and sizes by both childen!

hether or not you managed to fit in a visit to Cairnie Fruit Farm this summer, there is still time to see the Butterfly Maze in all its glory. Reflecting VisitScotland’s ‘Year of Natural Beauty’ the 2013 Mega Maze depicts a butterfly. Just how good are our local parks?

ndercover local dad decides to find out...

This month he visited Pittencrieff Park with his toddler son to test this green space in Dunfermline to see how it measured up to Families strict ‘family friendly’ criteria.

Q. Where is the Park?

Next to the town centre of Dunfermline and is well sign posted from most major roads.

Q. Getting there…

Being next to the old town it is easy to get to via public transport and is approximately a 10 minute walk from the train station.

Alternatively, a free car park is located off Pittencrieff Road. Score 5

Q. First Impressions…

When we arrived at the car park we were very surprised because not only was it a glorious sunny and hot day and the car park was easy to find, but unknown to us we had landed in the park on the same day as the children’s gala day. The park was heaving with families, events and stalls. This is something that undercover dad is unfamiliar with, but it was very welcomed! Score 5

Q. Sign of signage…

I was very pleased to see that large maps of the park are located at the main entrances including the car park. However, on this occasion we didn’t hang around to get our bearings as my son (and undercover dad!) wanted to head towards the music so we followed our ears and everyone else to the centre of the park to see what was going on.

I should add that finger signs are located at most major junctions around the park.

Q. Let’s climb/jump/ scramble…

For older children (and adventurous tot and dad!) there is a relatively new terraced play area which looks exciting and fun. It consists of elevated climbing towers and walkways with several chutes of varying types, round about, nest swing, wobble boards, springie, spinner and more. On the day we were visiting we couldn’t get near the play area as it was swamped with children and parents.

Q. Take the weight off your feet...

There are lots of seats located around the park and if you are driving the play area is only a short walk from the main car park.

Q. Stroller Stroll or Wheeled Workout?

This park is made for wheels of every size and type. Wide tarmac footpaths criss-cross the park with moderate inclines linking all the main facilities and key routes and more.

There are also informal routes in the ‘Glen’ for the more adventurous with ‘off-road’ buggies and the stamina to push up hill on steeper gradients and over rough terrain (we didn’t try these routes out on this occasion!).

Q. Top Trumps for toddlers…

For toddlers and younger kids (ages 3 - 5) there is a traditional looking play area set out on rubber surfacing comprising of swings, slides (of varying heights), roundabout and springies.

Q. Exploration Factor…

We really love a park where we can go exploring and this park fits all the criteria and more. First of all, it’s a really big park with mature trees and woodlands so you feel as if you are away from the hustle and bustle of the town. There are so many paths to explore with facilities such as glass houses (complete with fish pond and fish), gardens, museum, the abbey, café, monuments and planting displays. Its elevated aspect affords the visitor with fantastic long distance views of the Forth Railway Bridge, hills and surrounding landscape. Score 5

On this particular day (gala day) the café was really busy and the queue was long (my son had a tantrum at this point!) - I’ve also been told that it is really popular at weekends. However, the food was good. I didn’t manage to see the whole menu and ordered a child’s portion of soup and was please to see that they had fruit and fruit juice as well as the usual sugary treats, great cakes and a decent cup of coffee. The café is open all year round and is buggy/pram friendly especially at quieter times. Score 5 (long queues at busy times)

Q. Time for Tea – Outdoor eating

There are plenty of benches dotted around the park and many locations suitable for impromptu picnicking, although we didn’t come across any picnic benches or BBQ facilities on our visit. Score 4

Q. Legs Crossed?

The park toilets are located across from the café and I was pleasantly surprised to find that they are attended, scrupulously clean, modern and free to use. I am ashamed to say that in my euphoric state I forgot to check the baby changing facilities but I would hope that they are located in the disabled toilets. If not, baby changing is available in the café.

Q. What’s your USP?

This is a fascinating and beautiful park with significant historic buildings, gardens and parklands to explore. The park was gifted to the people of Dunfermline by Andrew Carnegie and designed by eminent urban designers and architects Patrick Geddes, Thomas Mawson and Robert Lorimer.

Q. Lasting Impressions

We have not visited this park before and we came away feeling very impressed and with a strong desire to return so that we can fully explore parkland, make use of the play area, visit the abbey, glass houses and museum. In addition we have the sound knowledge that there is a good café and toilet facilities and there is no need to leave the park. Overall, Q. Time for Tea – Indoor eating this is a terrific park with something to do We arrived at the park at lunchtime, so in all weathers and for every we headed straight for the family member both young Peacock Café which is located Key and old. Score 5 in the centre of the park next 1 Poor: Oh No!, Overall Score: 60 out of 65  to the Pavilion. hat’s it for another year. The school holidays are over and the uniforms purchased. Our children are looking pristine again, if only till the end of the first week of term.

But gym kits and name labels aside, now begins the difficult task of getting children back into the daily routine of early nights and early rises. More difficult still, is massaging those brain cells back into action and getting children actually ready to learn.

How to learn the times tables

Learning the times tables is an important skill that is the foundation for all maths. With an extensive maths curriculum, and the latest stipulation being that children should master their tables up to 12x12 by the age of nine, teachers need parents help in getting children to learn the basic facts.

Finding a pain-free method of learning times tables is not easy, but these tips and techniques should help you make major progress. ÊStart Ê with explaining the concept If your child understands that multiplication is repeated addition, they will have an easier time learning them.

Write the problem, like 4 x 9, on the front, and the answer, 36, on the back. Buy or create a times table poster and display key facts.

Times tables raps and music CDs are great for an auditory learner. Chant the times tables as multiples 0, 5, 10, 15, etc. and also as sentences 1×5=5, 2×5=10, etc. Say difficult times tables in a funny voice, a squeak or a whisper. Use helpful rhymes to remember really tricky ones, e.g. 8 x 8 = 64 becomes “He ate and he ate and he sticks in the door, eight times eight is sixty-four”.

For a kinaesthetic approach, add actions.

Children can clap, stamp or jump on the

difficult fact. Play ‘Knock, Knock’ –knock your fists twice on the floor, then put out the number of fingers of a times tables. The winner is the first to say the answer. ÊGames Ê to reinforce the multiplication facts After your child has a basic knowledge of the tables, games will help instil the recollection of correct facts quickly. Multiplication Bingo, Hoo Ha!, Know Your Times Tables and Math Whiz are great board games.

There are a whole host of multiplication computer games – multiplication.com, Learn-timestables.com, themathsfactor. com, mathsisfun.com, maths-games.org, and computer apps such as Squeebles, Ghost Blasters, Multiple Wipeout. After memorising times tables, it can be all too easy to forget them! Don’t give up too soon.

It can take six or seven weeks until the facts are truly automatic. Practice quick-fire drilling.

There are numbers everywhere, so multiply the digits in number plates or in recipes. Print out a times table square and keep a record of the tables your child knows well, so you know which ones you need to focus on.

Whichever method you choose, there is never a truly pain-free answer because real fluency requires real practice over weeks and months. That said, it is important for your child to have a secure knowledge of the times tables with instant recall - their future maths skills depend on it. So take the challenge, make it happen, and enjoy it!

Some of the children at Lauriston Nursery have been thoroughly enjoying musical classes with Jo Jingles. Children took part in singing songs and playing musical instruments to many of our favourite songs as well as learning fun new songs. Play leaders plan to organise many more classes on different days, giving all children the opportunity of joining in. The children in all rooms have been busy planting herbs and vegetables. Chef Marjory has been involved in planting these with the children and will be using the produce to make yummy nursery meals.

Touch Matters – share precious time with your baby L ocal mum & Massage Therapist, Orla Beaton, is launching her own Baby Massage classes called “Touch Matters” this September.

s well as getting children settled back to school at this time of year, many parents are actively thinking about and booking clubs and classes. There are lots of differing opinions on clubs and classes and sometimes it can be little short of bewildering to try to choose what is best for your child. Some children will have their own preference whilst others will be guided by parental interests perhaps. But what if you just don’t know?

Families has some advice from Ellen Aniston and insights from local class providers.

Extra-curricular activities Football or ballet, drama or Brownies - how do you know what, and how much, out-ofschool activity is right for your child?

Not long after your son or daughter disappears through the classroom door for the first time, the choice becomes bewildering. Their schoolbags come home stuffed with leaflets from this or that organisation promising all manner of benefits from enrolling in their classes. Relax. Extracurricular activities are not essential; many children do perfectly well without them.

However, there are some benefits from a few well-chosen groups, clubs or classes.

With the best will in the world, school cannot teach all the skills you might consider essential for modern life. Swimming lessons, for example, or cycling proficiency are crucial for safety.

In addition, carefully selected activities can bring numerous other benefits that could help your child now and in the future.

They will get a huge confidence boost from participating in an enjoyable activity they are successful at.

As well as learning new skills, more subtle benefits include fostering a sense of

community, increasing self-sufficiency and allowing a child – particularly one in a large family – something they feel is their own.

Club time can also allow one-to-one time for other children.

While these advantages are very real, care must be exercised when choosing activities.

Too many and the wrong ones will only leave everyone fed up and exhausted.

The easy choices are the ones your children are desperate to do. Although beware of signing up for something just because your son or daughter’s best friend is doing it, this may not be a good enough reason.

Ask yourself if your child gets something from the activity that they don’t get elsewhere and that it complements what’s already going on.

For example, an active youngster who is already in the football team might be better balancing their activities with music or drama

than adding another sport. Equally a child timid in the classroom may get great gains from being in a choir if it boosts their confidence.

A more tricky area is an activity you’d like your child to do when they’d rather spend their after-school time at home relaxing. Only you can tell if they are genuinely exhausted by a day’s education or not. However, do take their views into account as there really is no point in forcing a child into something they hate. And some school stages are more taxing than others.

After-school activities affect the whole family. No one wants to spend all their time ferrying children from one activity to another while dinner that still needs to be prepared and other children become resentful.

So only commit to out-of-school activities that fit comfortably into the schedule and budget. It may transpire that your time and money can be better spent on family activities at home.

When you do decide on a class or club – take some time to check it out. Find out how long it has been running, do other parents recommend it, are the staff Disclosure or CRB checked?

And finally…it’s okay to do nothing!

While extra classes keep your children entertained and active, it’s also important that they have some unstructured time – even that they are allowed to feel bored. If they bounce from one organised thing to the next, they’ll never learn the important skill of amusing themselves.

Drama Creepy-crawlies and walkie talkies The children of the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy are back for the autumn term with a season of bug-related themes - a Worm Week, a Spider Week and an Insect Week among them.

The older groups of the Academy will become explorers, gardeners, and naturalists, learning to interact verbally with creatures they may – or may not – like.
