Lockdown Life at King Edward VI School

For schools, responding to the coronavirus pandemic has meant working above and beyond to continue to educate young people. At King Edward VI School in Southampton, adjusting to the ‘new normal’ saw a transition to online learning which reconstructed the students’ usual timetable, albeit from home. As phased reopening was endorsed by Government, then came preparing the site for social distancing regulations and devising ‘hybrid’ lessons, delivering content appropriate for the whole class, whether they were in school or connecting from home.

Staff and students were heavily involved in the community effort to support the NHS, answering the call for PPE. Distributing to frontline workers at Southampton Children’s Hospital and other local NHS hospitals, surgeries, and social care facilities, the laser cutter worked overtime on manufacturing hundreds of visors, and soon surgical gowns and scrubs were added to the production schedule.

The school is open to small groups of visitors for Taster Mornings and Open Afternoons; email registrar@kes.hants.sch.uk for more information.
