news & views Bugsy Malone to re-open the Lyric Hammersmith after multi-million pound redevelopment In April 2015, Sir Alan Parker’s world famous stage musical Bugsy Malone, based on his acclaimed film, will re-open the Lyric Hammersmith following a multi-million pound redevelopment. The project to expand the current Lyric Hammersmith building, creating new facilities and improving the building’s environmental sustainability, is one of the largest cultural developments in West London. The building work represents the first major face-lift of the Lyric in 35 years.

Work is currently being completed on the creation of a new two-storey extension called the Reuben Foundation Wing, which will house a wide-range of new facilities including a dance studio, a TV studio, recording studios, screening cinema and a digital play space. Football Samurai Academy Football Samurai Academy is a unique and fast growing centre in West London for keen players ages 5+. Eating made easy at Holland Park Ecology Centre’s new Edible Teaching Garden A new edible forest teaching garden has been opened at the Holland Park Ecology Centre. The garden will allow children from local primary schools with limited access to green space to gain practical experience of where food comes from and how it is grown. It has been planted with fruit trees, berries, herbs, vegetables and flowering perennials with an emphasis on bio-diverse, native planting. Funding for the garden was generously provided by Whole Foods Kensington and ToolsGroup. The long-term goals of this Garden are to improve the students’ understanding of food provenance; promote a scientific understanding of ecology in the context of growing food; and inspire students to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables. education news All children to start learning a language at Primary school As of this school year, teaching a language will become mandatory from Key Stage Two (ages 7 to 11). Schools will be free to choose from French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Spanish, Latin or Ancient Greek. At Key Stage 3 the guidelines stipulate that a modern language must be taught. Most schools already have some provision for teaching languages, but the new guidelines mean that that there will be a more uniform approach across England, with a greater focus on grammar and written language. According to the DfES programme of study: “A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.” With English teenagers scoring lowest for first foreign language skills in a recent European Commission study of 16 countries, the move to starting earlier is a positive first step towards improving language skills in all key stages.

New Secondary Free School planned for Hammersmith Oversubscription at secondary schools in Hammersmith is high, and with some 60% of children educated outside the borough, the Livingstone Foundation Academies Trust has applied to launch a free school in the borough. Ian Livingstone is a co-founder of the new school and a founding father of the UK games industry, having opened his first Games Workshop shop in Hammersmith in 1978. His Next Gen review helped convince the Government to put Computing on the national curriculum. Ian is determined that the school will enable pupils to become skilled operators in the 21st century’s computerised, digital and IT-led world. Pupils will learn fundamental skills in computer science to enable digital creativity, and will focus on Communication (English), Problem Solving (Maths), Science and Art (including digital art and design). In addition to studying a broad and balanced curriculum, students will be encouraged to become motivated selflearners, develop enquiring minds, and learn the value of creativity, innovation, entrepreneurship, collaboration and teamwork. Students, regardless of background or ability, will be given the skills and opportunities to be the best they possibly can be. education news Should sex education be compulsory for all children?

The Liberal Democrats ignited a lively debate with their recent proposal for reforming sex education. Under the current system, sex education is only mandatory in state secondary schools – the new statement proposes the inclusion of free schools and academies, with ‘age appropriate’ teaching for pupils from Key Stage Two onwards.
The nursery will offer an extended daily schedule (7.30 am to 8.00 pm).
In a statement, David Laws, the education minister, said: “We believe that by educating children about sex and relationships in an appropriate way, we can help them to make informed choices in their personal lives.” Although the move would be highly controversial, it is not without support. One parent commented: “There are so many more sexualized images in today’s media, from music videos to internet exposure, than any of us had as children. I think teaching them about relationships and not just the biology of sex is long overdue, and will help kids to see through the media hype”. Your future, their future A new teacher recruitment campaign, Your future their future, has been launched by the government as part of an ongoing drive to get more high-quality teachers into England's classrooms. Around 35,000 trainee teachers need to be recruited every year. To help with this, the National College of Teaching and Leadership runs an annual recruitment campaign which plays a key role in attracting high-quality new entrants to the profession. This year's campaign launches with an interactive online film featuring Mr Burton, one of the teachers who featured in Educating Yorkshire. The film is available to view on YouTube, 4OD and Sky Go. The new campaign includes recruitment events throughout the academic year, and financial incentives to attract more of the best graduates to train to teach priority subjects and support services for candidates to help them begin their new career. babies At what age is my baby ready for night weaning? This is different for all babies and if your baby is healthy, growing well and is not waking for night feeds you do not need to wake them.
I
t is perfectly natural for your baby to wake at night for milk before they are six months old. As babies near 6 months old they are normally waking 1-2 times a night
Many babies wake more frequently than this and this is usually because they require feeding to return to sleep. As they transition between sleep cycles they will slightly waken and want to recreate the same environment they experienced when they initially went to sleep. If you find yourself still offering a “dream feed� at around 10-11pm at night and your baby is four months or over you should consider ceasing this-especially if your little one does not seem especially interested or is taking very little. The reason for this is to try and prevent a very common sleep prop of falling to sleep whilst feeding. It is very common for babies to wake up during light sleep to need a night feed out of habit rather than hunger. This is very common and is one of the main reason parents call me; needing support to help their child have a better nights sleep. One of the most helpful tips is to slightly rouse your baby after a feed so that they are aware that they are being placed in the cot or moses basket. They are far less likely to develop sleep issues if they learn how to fall asleep on their own in their bed. It is really important to wind your babies well after night feeds especially if they are formula fed- this can feel torturous in the middle of the night when you are desperate to close your eyes but has the effect of slightly rousing your baby and can prevent them from waking prematurely with tummy discomfort.
Top Tips n In the first 8 weeks breastfeed on demand to ensure you have a good supply of milk. n After 8 weeks old, discourage your baby from falling asleep when feeding at night. n When the feed is finished, wind baby well so this gently rouses him and prevents him waking due to tummy pain. n When the feed is finished make sure that baby is aware that he is being placed in his bed. n If baby is healthy and gaining weight appropriately stop offering the dream feed at 4 months old. If your baby is 6 months old and you have decided to night wean there is absolutely no reason why you cannot continue to breastfeed for as long as you desire. For formula fed babies, 8

formula is recommended until 12 months old when you can then offer full fat cows milk. All babies over 6 months old can have cows milk in their food i.e. cereal It is important to proceed slowly and gently with ceasing the night feeds as we cannot expect a baby to suddenly alter all we have taught them overnight. When you start night weaning, you must be prepared to offer more milk in the day initially until night weaning is established. Actually babies who feed frequently at night are often disinterested in eating solids in the day because they have received so many calories at night. Hence it is a great way to increase their desire to eat solid foods. Before you start night weaning, keep a sleep diary so you can ascertain what is an average breastfeed. If an average feed is 10 minutes on the first night you offer milk at every waking for 10 minutes, you reduce this by 30 seconds or a minute per feed over a couple of weeks. Ensuring that your baby is placed in the cot drowsy; if baby protests, stay with her and provide comfort, sshush, pat, stroke until they go to sleep. Do not leave your baby alone to cry. As you reduce your milk over the next few days your baby will be gradually be able to increase their intake in the day. You can stay on the same stage for up to three nights but any longer than that can lose the focus, which is sleep! With formula fed babies, you the process is identical, reducing the milk by half a fluid ounce a night until you cease the milk. When you have reduced to a couple of ounces or two minutes of breast milk you need to cease offering all night feeds. Some babies will cease before as they realise there is less reason to wake. When you have ceased the night feeds do not re-introduce as behaviours can become even more entrenched. Offer water if your baby wakes and you are worried about thirst. Many babies continue to wake for a week or so after ceasing the feeds as it can take time for their body clock to re-adjust. At every waking go to your baby and provide comfort by touch, your voice but try not to pick your baby up. However if your baby is very upset, of course pick up comfort and place back in the cot. They will soon stop waking at night. If they become unwell or have a period of teething it is perfectly normal for a baby to have unsettled sleep but your baby will not require milk so just offer water. Please remember sleep is only a problem if YOU define it as such, there is often pressure for a baby to sleep through the night before they are developmentally ready. Volunteer to be the gift this Christmas
Start a new family tradition this Christmas…
Opening the advent calendar and counting down the days until Christmas is always exciting for little ones, but for us parents having to either try and refuse chocolate before school, or defuse the arguments over whose turn it is today – or both! – it can be less than fun. So why not forgo the chocolate this year, and make a Christmas activity advent calendar instead? Write a list of different Christmas-themed or special activities that you can enjoy as a family, and put one activity in each day of the advent calendar. You can make them as simple or as elaborate as you like – whatever works for you! If your children are usually tired after school try and keep the weekday activities quieter, then you can enjoy the more active ones at the weekend. If you’re stuck for inspiration we’ve come up with some ideas to get you started…
1. Decorate the Christmas tree. 2. Make paper snowflakes 3. Bake and decorate gingerbread men 4. Write a Christmas poem 5. Create a collage with Christmas stickers, wrapping paper,
and cut out letters.

Many charities are desperate for people to lend a helping hand over Christmas. But they do need to plan ahead, so if you are thinking of volunteering this year, now’s the time to find out what’s available in your area. TimeBank, the national volunteering charity, has launched a special guide on its website at www.timebank.org.uk/christmas-volunteering in response to all the calls it receives about volunteering opportunities each Christmas. You could pack a shoe box full of gifts for children across the world; host an international student at your home, help out at a foodbank for hungry families or volunteer as a residential helper at respite care centres across the UK. You might have thought about helping to serve Christmas lunch at a homeless shelter but did you know that many shelters also need entertainers, medical professionals, hairdressers, therapists and dog handlers? TimeBank is especially keen to get companies volunteering this year. It says lots of businesses are finding party budgets won’t stretch to much at Christmas, while teams are looking to do something alternative, unusual, affordable and much more fun than your average work do. The charity’s solution is to make volunteering part of the office celebrations – getting together with your workmates for a few hours volunteering in your community, and then celebrating together at a local pub or restaurant afterwards.

Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-political, noncommercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities. The day itself takes place on the first shopping Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses. In 2014 Small Business Saturday UK will take place on Saturday December 6th.

Picture the scene. You’re at the supermarket and you’ve refused your child something that they want, causing them to freak out and scream loudly. You react by shouting back at them. Before long the situation is out of hand, with both of you at full-volume and people staring. All kids will have a tantrum at some point; some simple steps can help to avoid this behaviour or at least lessen it. Trying a bit of distraction when the anger starts to build up – telling a joke, pulling a silly face – can be really effective. If it's too late for humour, then take a deep breath and a mental step back. Is their behaviour really unreasonable? Can you just ignore it and carry on with your shopping? Maybe you have a spare few minutes to put the trolley aside and take them out of the situation? It could be either out of that aisle or maybe even out of the supermarket, where you can both calm down.
Positive Parenting This approach may seem like pie in the sky when faced with a screaming 3-year old, but it’s never too early to try what the NSPCC calls ‘positive parenting’. If you show love and affection to your child and praise them when they are behaving well, they will associate getting attention with good behaviour. Active ignoring is encouraged, while physical punishments like smacking should be off limits: “smacking or biting back gives a very confusing message – that it is OK to use force or to hit physically when you are angry or to make a point.”

"One of the biggest mistakes we make as parents is to leave our children alone and say nothing to them when they're behaving nicely.
“Tantrums happen to all parents. They do not mean you are a bad parent.You can try to prevent them with praise and sticker charts. If that fails, you can try to distract the tantrums away. But once started, the best way to stop them is to ignore them.
“Ignore the behaviour you don't want. Instead, emphasise the positive with cuddles, kisses, and praise, and tell them all the things they need to hear in order for them to understand they will get attention for doing things nicely."

"As soon as you feel the temper rising, distract them onto something else: a funny song, story, or 'did you see that green squirrel with orange stripes just fly past the window?'"
"At home, a sticker chart is a great way of encouraging good behaviour. Each time your child is good, give them a sticker. Naughty behaviour gets a 'sad face'. Points mean prizes - enough stickers get them a treat."
Ignoring "Ignoring gives the message that the behaviour gets no reward and if you use this technique alongside praising every lovely behaviour, your children will get a very powerful message."
Positive example "It's straightforward but it works – your children will copy you. Swear and they will swear, smack and they will smack. Lead by example."
Time out "First ask your child to stop misbehaving. If that doesn't work, ask again, but more firmly.This gives the child two chances to change his or her behaviour, and if they do, you praise them.
So when you feel like you’re at the end of your tether, try to stay calm. After all, a toddler having a tantrum in the supermarket is one thing, but a screaming adult in the frozen food aisle? Not a good look…
"If they refuse to stop the behaviour, or if the tantrum escalates, you go for Time Out. Take your child firmly but with no attention to a safe place where you can leave them for a period of one minute for each year of their life (i.e. three minutes for a three-yearold) up to a maximum of five minutes. You should not talk to your child through the door or give them any other form of attention during the Time Out period.
Here are some hints from leading Clinical Psychologist, Professor Tanya Byron, on how to smooth out behavioural problems, and get the best from your child.
"Once the Time Out period is over, explain to your child why they were Timed Out and then move on and praise them at the first opportunity.”
