NEWS & VIEWS Keren’s Nursery is coming to Holland Park Keren’s nursery, in operation for 12 years, have been running nurseries that have been judged outstanding by Ofsted in their last inspection in 2015 (in Belsize Park and Hampstead Garden Nurseries.) They are now opening a new nursery at the Holland Park Synagogue. Keren’s is a private Jewish Nursery and Pre-School, that takes children from 18 months to 5 years, focusing on key goals of social skills, confidence, self-esteem and independence within a Jewish and Israeli context. Staff are highly trained early years specialists, teachers and practitioners. London’s newest senior school opens in Piccadilly Independent sector schools group, Minerva Education, has announced the launch of a brand new senior school in Piccadilly. Adding to its existing group of six independent schools, Minerva has agreed a 30 year lease term on the Grade I listed building, located at 106 Piccadilly, opposite Green Park. The site - which was previously home to Limkokwing University - will now be transformed into a much-needed new independent senior school, to be named Eaton Square Upper School, Mayfair. Phillip Williams will assume the role of head teacher at the school, which is due to open in September 2017. Having achieved a first class degree in Mathematics and Philosophy at Merton College, Oxford, Philip brings over 20 years of experience in the education sector. Eaton Square Upper School will provide its students with the highest quality of education thanks to cutting-edge classroom resources and specialised learning spaces. Some of the new facilities on offer will include a purpose-built refectory, fully equipped science and design & technology laboratories, and specialist music rooms. Notting Hill & Ealing High School has a new headteacher Mr Matthew Shoults, MA (Oxon) PGCE (Cantab) is taking over the reins from Ms Lucinda Hunt. Matthew studied Classics at Worcester College, Oxford. He has come from North London Collegiate where he was Deputy Head (Curriculum) in 2010 and Senior Deputy (combining the academic and running the school on a day to day basis) two years later. His hobbies including amateur music making (violin and singing), hiking (Scottish Highlands and European Alps), cooking and crosswords. On his appointment Matthew said “Right from my first visit to Notting Hill and Ealing, I have been struck by the school’s warm and friendly atmosphere, and how grounded and assured the girls are. PARENTING A French “Pause” for all occasions From the moment a new baby is born, parents do everything they can to protect and help their children. A new-born is fragile, precious and needs to be looked after. However, there comes a time when the instinct to jump in and fix everything actually slows a child’s progress. There are two main areas where children need to be given a little time: sleep and patience. There are two broad camps of prevailing thought on these matters - I am going to propose a middle-way instead. First, what are the two schools of thought? For sleep the division is between the selfsoothers and the

By Philippe Fraser sensitive reactors. The self-soothing camp believes a child should be left alone, to selfsooth, even if this means a child screaming its head off. At the opposite extreme, parents jump straight in trying to comfort a child at the first sign of a gurgle. Our solution? “The Pause.” Children sleep in much shorter sleep cycles than adults, and between each phase of sleep, it is not unusual for a child to gain awareness almost to the point of being awake. At this point, a child may well make various natural noises. But left to his own devices, will then start towards the next deep sleep cycle. The risk here, is of jumping in to check on a baby, and actually waking the child completely. The point of the pause, is to

pause a parent’s protective instincts, and observe the child. Is the child just mid-cycle, or does he or she actually need something? The Pause also ensures a parent does not go all the way to the extreme of just leaving a child when he or she is clearly in distress. A child needs to feel loved and supported and the risk with self-soothing, is that a child will not learn to feel safe – but rather will feel abandoned. The Pause allows a parent to assess if their child actually needs support, and can then provide it as required. This practice also follows into all other areas as a child grows up. If two adults are having a conversation when one of their children comes up, the usual reaction is to either stay “stop” or to immediately give the child attention. Again the middle way works here by saying “wait,” If said in a short, sharp manner, a child will usually stop in its tracks and wait. If it really is pressing, the child will not be put off by a simple “wait.” Yet, over time, the length of time

a child is used to waiting will increase - even if at first it must be kept short. A child has to learn that waiting gets result. Finishing your verbal paragraph is the perfect length to start with, but once a child understands that “wait” does mean you will give them attention once you are ready, the length of time can be increase successfully. In her excellent book; How to Talk so Kids will Listen, Adele Faber writes of the advantages of a short direct message. Children quickly lose interest in long explanations - so a short “wait” is much more effective than a more laborious reply. Children have the ability to improve their patience skills, and as adults we have a responsibility to help them experience it. A child that is content withwaiting, is the start of a child who can develop internal resources to cope with frustration. NEWS & VIEWS New Principal and changes to West London Dance Academy. Previous owner of West London Dance Academy, Judith Townsend decided to hang up her dancing shoes in July to concentrate on her family. She chose to sell her thriving academy of 10 years to one of her loyal and long term teachers, Natalie Parnell. Natalie has been dancing since the age of 3 and teaching for 25 years. She is a fellow member of both the IDTA and ISTD. She trained with Squires School of Dance and ran her own successful dance studio in Kent for 15 years, training many students, and maintains a teaching role with a Hungarian Ballet company. Natalie joined the West London Dance Academy in 2011 teaching classes at both Natalie Parnell New Principal and Director of West London branches. She says “I am thrilled to be taking over as principal and owner, and can’t wait to Dance Academy get started. Judith ran a very tight professional ship and we achieved outstanding exam results throughout the 10 years. I now hope to do the same along with introducing lots of new ideas such as performance classes giving the pupils the chance to learn other dance styles whilst showing off their amazing techniques in front of a large audience. BACK TO SCHOOL Getting your child into a good routine... As you and your child get into the autumn and winter school term, it can be difficult to cope with changing weather and dull days. The long evenings of summer are over, the nights draw in and the mornings are dark. Getting your child

settled into a good routine is essential if you are going to ensure they get enough sleep and are able to get up on time for school without too much effort and moaning.

Exercise is your best friend Even if the weather is dreadful, try to make sure that your kids have some exercise every day. Not only will it help keep them fit and healthy but it also helps them to get a good night’s sleep. The best time is just after school, when it’s still light and you can take them to

the playground or let them loose in the garden. Then it’s time for homework, dinner, bath and bed.

Plan your mornings Most parents would agree; mornings are bad times! Everyone is tired and cranky and if you’re not careful, it can descend into chaos. So having a routine that is followed every school day can help immensely. Set an alarm for 15 minutes before you need to get the kids up and get yourself together in that time. Whether it’s that first cup of tea, a shower or choosing what to wear, make sure you have time for you first and everything else will go that bit more smoothly. Then it’s time to get the kids up and for them to follow their routine, too. Avoid any electronic stimulation in the morning, so ban games, X-Boxes and the TV, as

time can slip away when they are distracted.

Be prepared Getting things prepared the night before can help immensely with the morning rush, so prepare lunchboxes and get breakfast things out the night before.

Have rules Make sure there are rules for where things are put when your kids arrive home each day. Let them know that they can’t just dump their gear anywhere! Those school bags, shoes and coats must go in a specific place so that there is no frantic searching in the morning, with everyone getting frustrated. Sticking to this routine makes for a happier family.

avoid missing tutoring sessions, music lessons and play dates. A big calendar on the fridge means everyone can see what’s happening...

Why routines work Children respond really well to a routine so you’ll thank yourself when they adapt to doing the right things at the right time each day. Have breakfast and dinner at set times, bedtime must be absolutely set in stone and homework should have appointed times too. Giving your kids too much choice over their own routine just leads to their spending too long on games or play and not enough for homework and helping with household chores.

For little ones With younger children, a very visual calendar that they can refer to makes them feel like they have some control. Try buying a large calendar and drawing pictures or symbols to show what events are coming up. Talk it through with your child at dinner time or bedtime so that they can mentally prepare and ask questions about things that they feel unsure of. It also means you can count down the days to exciting events to look forward to. At the same time, you will be establishing concepts of time that they will be learning about in their maths lessons.

For all children

Use technology to help you. There are several family apps that are free to download and can be shared amongst family members that allow each family member to upload individually. This means that everyone is kept in the loop. Train your preteens and teenagers to use it and show them the benefits of keeping up to date with it. 9. Pay attention to what's on the walls - and not just the artwork. What are children being warned about, or encouraged to do? Are there any school visits being advertised? Which clubs seem to be thriving? 10. Look at the school's league tables, but don't pin everything on them. Read the Ofsted report too and pay particular attention to how the school has done over time. If it's had a dip, are there signs of improvement or suggestions that it could turn round?

1. Make up your own mind. It's amazing how many parents never even look round a school because of what they've heard. A school that doesn't suit another family could be just right for yours. 2. Listen to your child's feelings as well as your own. Choosing his or her primary is down to just you and your partner; but your 10 or 11year-old deserves a say. 3. Use open days wisely. If you can, go to a daytime visit (especially to a school that seems a strong contender) because you'll see it in working mode. 4. Nothing advertises a school like its pupils. Do they seem happy? Are they engaged? If you have time, pass by at going-home time. Are they well-behaved? 5. How about the staff - do they seem fulfilled and cheery working there? Take opportunities to chat to them. 6. Listen to your instincts. If a school doesn't feel right, move on. You don't have to explain yourself or your reasons for doing so to anyone else (although you do, of course, need to discuss it with your child if your instincts are different). 7. Don't get bogged down in the detail: what you're aiming to get is a sense of the school. Does it feel happy, productive, calm? Is there a sense of order and caring? These things matter more than the nitty-gritty. 8. Think about your child's talents and interests and ponder carefully whether they'll be catered for. Then add what the school offers that might be harder to pick up at home. We're a family of journalists, where literacy is easier for us as parents; so I'm glad my girls went to a school that specialised in maths

11. Where do pupils go on to from this school? You want to see at least some youngsters doing well academically and aiming for good courses at top universities as it shows support for the most ambitious. 12. Go to the head teacher's talk and take your notebook. This is an important part of the event: not only do you need to pick up on the head's attitude and values and what matters most to him or her, but you also need to pay special attention to anything that's said about the entrance criteria. Understanding that is the crucial next stage. 13. If you like a school, do your homework about whether your child fits its entrance requirements. However much you love the school, and however much you think your child would thrive there, you'll only get a place if you fulfil the criteria. Read the school's entrance policy through very, very carefully. If you don't fulfil the requirements, could you change something so you do? If not, move on: there's no point in wasting a choice or railing against something you can't change. 14. You're bound to talk to other parents, and you want to talk to

other parents, but don't get pulled along by their tide. Do your own research and develop your own views: knowledge is power! 15. Keep telling yourself (because it's true!) that there is no perfect school. Every school has strengths and weaknesses. There's more than one school that can be right for your child. 16. When the time comes to fill in the forms, allow yourself lots of time and do it extremely carefully. There may be supplementary forms, and there may be complicated arrangements for giving them in (especially if you're applying to faith schools). If you find it all too confusing, talk to your child's primary teacher or primary head, or call the education department at your local authority. 17. Have a plan of action for what you'll do if you don't get the school you're hoping for. Just having that plan will make you feel more relaxed. 18. Remember that there's a lot of movement in the first few weeks after places are allocated, and many children get in from waiting lists. 19. Don't underestimate how much hard work an appeal can be, or how emotionally draining. That's not to say don't do it: just be prepared. 20. Remember that, at the end of the day, parents make more difference to a child's future than a school does. Even if your child doesn't get into your first choice of school (and one in seven didn't last year) your attitude to that could be a much bigger factor in what happens next for your child than the school itself. Have confidence, first and foremost, in your child. And trust that, together, you will work things out if and when you come up against problems.
