Vaccinations are often advised if you plan on travelling outside of the UK, where you may encounter some serious infectious diseases.

Most vaccinations are considered safe when breastfeeding but speak to a doctor or travel clinic nurse before having any vaccinations. ● Activities during your stay − if you will be in contact with animals then you may be more at risk of getting diseases such as rabies. Spending more time outdoors, in rural areas, refugee camps or in medical settings may require additional vaccinations. ● Some countries require an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) before you are granted entry. For example, some parts

of Africa and South America will need you to produce a valid Yellow Fever certificate. Yellow Fever vaccination can only be done at designated centres.

Where can you get your vaccinations?

The NHS Childhood Vaccination Programme in the UK doesn’t include protection against many of the infectious diseases found overseas, and only some of the required vaccinations are available for children and adults through NHS GP surgeries.

Vaccination against all the listed diseases could be done at a travel clinic or Private GP service and it would be advisable to make an appointment at least eight weeks before your departure date to ensure vaccination is effective in time for your travel.

Protecting Your Children’s Teeth with Fissure Sealing

There have been several important advancements in dentistry over the past decades, including the ability to bond to the tooth surface. This has led to the development of one of the most effective preventative treatments now available − fissure sealing.

Adult back teeth (molars and premolars) have rough surfaces comprising of grooves (fissures) and small holes (pits). These are the areas where plaque initially accumulates and decay begins.

Even good tooth brushing may be ineffective because the bristles of the toothbrush will often not access the deep parts of the fissures and pits and it is common to need fillings on the biting surfaces of back teeth for this very reason.

Thanks to the advancements made in adhesive dentistry we are now able to use fissure sealing to safely and painlessly bond to the surface of teeth without any destructive preparation. The technique involves applying a white gel to the fissures and pits of the back teeth, filling and sealing them to leave a smooth surface which makes it far more difficult for the plaque to adhere to.

The material that is used will wear over the years but

remains in the deepest areas where it is most needed and most importantly gets children

through the early stages when they are most likely to develop cavities. This preventative treatment obviously does not eliminate the need to brush and floss, but patients who have had this treatment and take good care of their teeth are unlikely to ever need fillings!

How children learn new things

Every parent anticipates and remembers their little one’s first steps, but what happens when your child gets a little bit older?

‘We talk about specific windows for learning some of those early skills, but every age is a window of opportunity for engaging children, showing an interest, exposing them to a wide variety of experiences,’ says consultant clinical psychologist Emma Citron, who specialises in children and adolescents. ‘The approaches might change but children don’t stop needing that input once they reach school age.’

The science bit

Learning any new skill means building connections between brain cells called neural pathways. Like branches on a tree, more advanced skills stem from the fundamentals already in place.

Not everyone learns in the same way, so the neural pathways for mastering the same skills can take different routes, but the more they are used, the stronger they get. Similarly, circuits that aren’t used will weaken until eventually they no longer exist.

‘The development process is ongoing,’ Emma emphasises.

‘Even a child of nine or ten would potentially need remedial parenting or therapy if for whatever reason they were suddenly not enabled to develop.’

‘I don’t want to’

The brain circuits for the most critical activities, such as breathing, are already developed at birth. Those for the next wave of core skills – moving, eating and communicating – happen instinctively within roughly the same time frame for all babies because they are at some level essential for survival.

When it comes to later skills, whether it’s swimming, riding a bike, playing chess or singing, there is no inherent drive to learn so the motivation has to come from elsewhere. What that is will depend on each child.

‘You still have a teaching role but it’s more complicated as children get older. You need to communicate effectively, listen and have mutual trust to find the approach that works for them,’ says Emma. ‘But whatever suits July-August 2017

Create the right environment

‘A young child needs to be in a caring, stimulated environment, where you are making eye contact, playing, giving your attention and time and being patient,’ Emma points out. The same applies when that child is attempting to master a new skill a few years down the line; if your child has ‘switched off’, for whatever reason, they are not going to be ripe for learning much of anything.

‘Gone are the days when you’d expect children to just ingest information,’ Emma states.‘Most children learn best by being given the resources and space to work things out for themselves, with support there when it is wanted

– not by being micromanaged by a so-called tiger parent!

‘If it’s all seeming like a chore, something’s gone wrong. Your primary goal has to be raising well-balanced individuals who want to engage with the world with curiosity and fun.’

Fail together

Those neural pathways strengthen with use so practise really does make perfect. While it’s helpful to pass on tips for the skills you have, it is equally beneficial to show children that you’re not afraid to fail and to keep trying when it’s something you can’t do. Make sure you try activities that are new to you too – and if your child is sometimes the faster learner, they will gain confidence from that boost.

Be the best model

Children will still learn – whether you want them to or not – by

copying you. As they get older the circle of people they will emulate in some way gets larger, but your own influences through your attitude and behaviours remains pivotal (whatever your independent pre-teen might like you to believe!).

‘Do practise what you preach.’

Emma warns. Don’t say you can’t without trying or go in with a negative mindset or be overly self-critical. Instead, embrace and share a positive, open-minded, approach to everyday life.

The brain circuits children are forming are powered by everything they are experiencing around them. Their senses, feelings and emotions release the neurotransmitters (the chemicals in the brain) to ‘flick the switch’ on their new skills, so ‘Imbue your children with curiosity and passion by showing the same to them,’ Emma says. ‘Everything else stems from this.’

There are many activities for parents and children to do together to prevent boredom setting in, such as cooking or making something at home and having a day out at the park or a museum. However, finding productive activities that keep children busy and actively engaged throughout the long summer holiday can seem like an impossible task, which is why many parents choose organised summer holiday clubs.

Holiday clubs provide a valuable service for working parents, but the advantages for children attending them are also many.

Send a postcard Let your friends and family know what you’ve been up to with a postcard. They’re only short so are a wonderful way to get a bit of writing going during the holidays.

Your school shoe fitting guide When it comes to buying school shoes for your children, the importance of making the right choice of footwear can’t be overstressed.

Poorly fitting shoes can cause painful problems, which your children could carry with them into later life. In fact, your child’s feet will continue to grow and develop until they reach their teens, so getting it right now is vital.

Measuring your child’s feet Because your child’s feet will continue to grow in fits and starts, it’s important to have them measured by a trained, professional shoe fitter in a shoe shop every eight weeks or so. The fitter will measure your child’s feet from the tip of their longest toe to the back of their heel and across the widest part of the foot. From these measurements, the correct size and fitting of shoe can be determined.

You can quickly check the fit of your child’s shoes each month yourself, in between professional fittings. There should be roughly a thumbnail’s length between the end of the shoe and your child’s toes, in order to allow for movement and growth.

Warning signs to look out for

Children are not always good at telling their parents when they have problems with ill-fitting shoes, so you may need to play detective and be on alert for problems. The following signs are usually indicative of poorly-fitting shoes: ● Blisters and rubbing ● Reluctance to wear shoes at all 12

● Poor posture or a rolling gait when your child walks ● Refusing to wear socks (usually if the shoes are too small and tight) Obviously, if your little one complains that their feet hurt or become reluctant to wear their shoes, it’s a good idea to have their feet measured professionally again, just in case they’ve outgrown their current pair of school shoes.

What to look for when choosing school shoes

There are a number of important things that you should look for when choosing school shoes for your kids. A firm heel cup is very important. The heel supports the foot and needs to be held in a straight position. If the heel leans to one side or the other, pain and postural problems could arise. Try pressing gently on the sides of the heel – if it sinks in easily, the shoe is not providing sufficient support.

The shoe should have a strap, Velcro or laces to prevent the shoe from slipping forward and scrunching your child’s toes.

Ill-fitting shoes that crush the toes can lead to permanent problems like clawed or hammer toes. The

shoe sole should be flexible at the ball of the foot only and it should have sufficient cushioning so that the foot is supported comfortably when your little one runs or skips.

Shoe material should be breathable and water resistant.

If your child’s feet sweat and can’t breathe, smelly feet and fungal infections can result.

It is a good idea to encourage your child to wear socks with their school shoes.

Socks help to absorb sweat and can prevent damage to the feet caused by friction as your child runs and plays.

Shoe styles to avoid There are a few styles that should be avoided when choosing school shoes. ● Rubber clogs don’t provide enough heel support and can cause your child to walk with their toes turned out, potentially causing joint and knee problems.

Ballet pumps and plimsolls are usually flat and flimsy so they don’t give enough support to the feet, sometimes leading to the toes being clenched in order to stop the shoes from slipping. Problems such as fallen arches or flat feet can also be caused by perpetually wearing very flat shoes.

Trainers are a much better choice for kids as they can provide plenty of support as well as being comfortable and breathable.

Ugg boots or similar should only be used as slippers as they don’t provide enough support to the feet to be worn on a daily basis as outdoor footwear.

●

High-heeled shoes are not a good idea for school because of the pressure that is exerted on your child’s toes. Slip on high-heels often cause the feet to slide forward, resulting in crushing of the toes.

●

Overly heavy shoes should be avoided as they can put too much strain on growing feet and can encourage clawing and clenching of the toes.

●

It’s really important that you choose well-fitting shoes for your kids, not just for their comfort now, but for their future foot health too.

How to get your toddler started

1. Even if you plan to take your toddler to swimming lessons, it’s a good idea to take him to the pool yourself first, before you begin any classes.

2. Look for family sessions, or times when the whole pool is available to adults and children.

3. Start with sessions of around 30 minutes until he’s happy in the water. Once he’s gained confidence you’ll probably find that getting him out is the problem.

4. When you first take your toddler swimming try to go as a family, or with a friend, so that you have some assistance if your toddler starts to play up.

5. Get into the water first and stand in the depth where you feel most comfortable with your arms out, ready to hold him, then ask your partner or friend to hand him to you in the water.

What your child will need There is a wide range of swimwear available so if your child needs some encouragement it may help if you allow him to choose his own. It’s best for boys to wear trunk-type shorts as longer ones that reach the knee will drag in the water and make swimming difficult.

Bike Ride away - Teach Your Child to Ride this Summer!

Learning to ride a bike is a big part of growing up and there are ways in which you can help your child accomplish this skill.

At the beginning of a child’s cycling journey, there is a range of aluminium or wooden balance bikes or scooters which will enhance a child’s ability when they move onto a bike with pedals.

A child will have a much more enjoyable learning experience if they feel in control on their bike. If you buy a bike that your child will grow into, the extra size, height and weight can be overwhelming,

and may mean your child can’t ride properly or safely control it.

The lighter the bike, the easier it is for a child to move from a stationary position, manoeuvre around corners and go up and down curbs.

A bike is the right size when your child can sit on the saddle and rest the balls of both feet on the ground. They should be able to comfortably straddle the top bar with both feet flat on the ground and reach the handlebars with a slight bend in the arms when sitting on the seat. Your child should be able to grasp the handbrakes and apply enough pressure to stop the bike.

Teach your kids to ride a bike 1 in 7 easy steps

Teaching your child to ride a bike has never been easier with these seven simple steps.

Begin with a balance bike Balance bikes are great because they have no pedals or stabilisers and are much lighter. Because children can use their feet to balance and move themselves along, those as young as two can learn to balance on their own.

Start on flat ground Always begin to teach your child on flat ground – so at a local park or area with no traffic. You can work your way up to small hills.

Teach them to use the brake At the age of two and a half to three, children are able to operate a hand brake, as long as it’s gentle enough for their fingers. Begin by showing your child how the brake works and encourage her to practise.

Always wear a helmet Wearing a helmet is a must. The sooner your little one gets used to it, the better. We recommend that you shop for

Get an adjustable seat Try to choose a bike that has an adjustable seat as this means the bike can be adjusted to suit their height.

When your child is on the bike, both feet should be firmly on the ground – not just the toes – and the knees should be slightly bent.

Upgrade to a bigger bike When your child has developed enough skill and confidence you can transfer them to a pedal bike without stabilisers.

Clubs and classes are a great way to continue your child’s development, as well as to allow them to have fun, get exercise, socialise with others and take part in activities they might not have the chance to at home.

Take a look at the list to find out which ones are best suited for your little one.

Rugby

Rugby is a great way for boys and girls to have fun and get exercise while learning to work and function as part of a team. Your children can learn a wide variety of skills from the sport, including respect, winning and losing and working together. All of these come together to make a great, enjoyable experience.

Drama

Drama is always hugely popular with children and really helps them release their creative thoughts and let their imagination run wild. Always fun and engaging, it’s also a great way to help children develop their own sense of self, confidence and self-esteem − even shy children love taking part. It can also be a great way to develop an interest in other forms of art.

Sports for ADHD

ADHD can make it difficult for some children to engage in organised activities and team sports. Not all sports are well suited to children with ADHD traits, and not all coaches and supervisors are understanding about the difficulties associated with the condition. There are programmes specifically designed for children with ADHD, using sports that are well suited to the different challenges posed by those with the condition.

They help them to participate in team sports, making it a fun experience and a great opportunity for exercise, learning and development.

Brownies

Joining the Brownies is a great way to get your child to experience the outdoors and engage and socialise with others.

Studies have shown that scouting organisations help children with their mental health in later life,

Martial arts

Martial arts are a great way to help develop confidence in children, as well as learning values like discipline and patience. Teaching responsible self-defence helps to benefit children enormously, and it’s a great and fun way to get exercise too.

Brilliant Brooklands By Mima Walia

I have never been to Brooklands Museum in Weybridge before and I can honestly say it is a great day out!

One of the highlights of this trip was being a passenger in one of the vintage cars; it’s certainly not for the faint hearted but the children absolutely loved it! We took a hair-raising trip up Test Hill and then another along the Members’ Banking of the

old Race Track, courtesy of the Brooklands Volunteer Car Rides Team. After such an adrenaline rush, we headed over to the Bus Museum where we had a more sedate ride on a double decker bus, courtesy of the London Bus Museum.

If you have fond memories of Concorde, then the chance to experience being a passenger on this fabulous aircraft, with a half-hour virtual supersonic ‘flight’ experience, is a must.

There is even a Kids Tour during the holidays where participation is very much encouraged! There are lots of other planes to see too and the children loved exploring them all, especially the luxurious Vickers VC10 belonging to the Sultan of Oman which was a particular favourite.

The children loved the new state-of-the-art 4D Theatre where they tried their hand at flying with the Red Arrows Display Team and driving a lap of the Le Mans circuit with Mike Hawthorn. The rides run all day and last around eight minutes each.

But what really makes Brooklands so special is its staff. They really are fantastic and extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable, with a few of the volunteers having been part of a restoration team. They obviously love what they do and it really shows.

Whatever time of year you choose to visit Brooklands, there is always something exciting

happening. It is great value for money and you will visit again and again – I can’t recommend it highly enough!

Rex-citing times at Look Out Discovery This summer the Look Out Discovery Centre in Bracknell welcomes some very special guests when the dinosaurs arrive!

The Big Dinosaur Show (22 July to 3 September) is a fun experience where the children can help solve some scientific puzzles to keep the herd of dinos alive.

Inside the centre there are over 90 hands-on science and discovery activities, aimed at toddlers to under 12s. Visitors can build an unfinished house with ride-on diggers, test their speed with Batak or leave their shadow on the wall!

Celebrate the 75th anniversary of Enid Blyton’s Famous Five this summer with a trip to RHS Wisley, near Woking.

From 22 July to 3 September, children are invited to The Famous Five on a Garden Adventure where they can follow a self-guided trail and help Uncle Quentin to uncover more about the mysterious Robo Bees. What the Ladybird Heard Makes West End Debut Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks’ bestselling picture book What the Ladybird Heard makes its West End debut this summer. Festivals are FUN Easy steps to make your kids’ first festival a breeze

Introducing your children to all kinds of music can be a great way to give them a lifelong love of everything from folk to classical. Many of the UK’s festivals have plenty to do for the whole family and with some careful planning and by packing a few essentials, you’ll all have a great time.

Where to stay

If you have (and know how to put up) a tent, this can be the most cost-effective way of attending a festival, as ticket prices can be high. Check the tent before you go to ensure it has all its poles and pins. A good ground sheet is a must, as are camp beds or self-inflating air beds. A playpen is great for babies and small children to sleep in at night and play in the day.

Alternatively, other options, from pre-erected tents to Yurts and teepees may be provided.

Take a look at the festival’s website to see what’s suitable.

If you can’t face roughing it, book a local hotel or bed and breakfast. You’ll have a bolthole should the weather turn nasty and somewhere to wash properly!

Take time to orient yourself around the site, find where your favourite bands will be and most importantly, check out where the loos and showers are. These can get very busy and there are often long queues. For small kids, take a travel potty, as kids often need to ‘go’ quite suddenly. Most festivals have a craft and activities area for kids too.

Pushchairs can be tricky to use if the ground is muddy. Carriers are more portable and take up less space.

With small kids, try to camp in the family or quiet areas so that you won’t all be kept awake by people coming back to their tents (in all conditions) through the small hours.

Setting up

Car parks can be quite a way from camps, so try to ensure that all gear can be put into a couple of backpacks for you and your partner to carry – and still have a hand free for the kids. Some festivals rent a wagon to transport your stuff, which you can then use to pull the kids around in.

What to eat

There are usually lots of food stalls but bear in mind they can be pricey.

If you want to do your own cooking, invest in a camp stove.

Easy, one pot meals are best, like soups, stews, rice or pasta. Freeze some homemade meals, then just before you leave, put them in a cool box together with drinks and milk.

Take lots of snacks too, in case cooking or queuing for meals takes longer than you think!

Safety

Kids should have your name (not theirs) and number on them in case they get separated. Write it on their arm, or buy luggage tags and attach them to their clothes and bags. Talk to them about how to behave should they get lost. Make sure your phone is charged, so if your kids do get separated, you are able to be contacted.

Dress your kids in bright clothes so you can spot them and take a photo of them each morning, so if they go wandering, you can remember how they were dressed and show others.

Don’t take valuables and keep things you can’t leave behind, such as phone, keys, your purse and credit cards, with you in a day pack all day.

Never leave them in your tent.

Fancy dress

Many festivals now have a fancy dress parade as part of the fun, so take costumes. Some things can be made on-site at a craft stall.

Face paints are great to pack, as are glow sticks and bubbles.
