You don’t have to be a seasoned twitcher, or even own a pair of binoculars, to join in the RSPB’s annual Big Garden Birdwatch.

The RSPB relies on spotters young and old, on their own or in groups, to count the number of birds of different species sitting in their gardens or local parks over a period of one hour on either 28 or 29 January. Experienced yoga teacher and local mum Olya Stevens launches her Yoga Wizards classes in Bexley, Sidcup and Eltham in January. Classes are available for children aged 2 to 11 years and their parents/carers if your child is under 4.

The classes are a fun and interactive way for children to explore traditional yoga postures, breathing techniques and relaxation in a noncompetitive environment. A new report published by UK charity MobileWise warns that children’s health is being jeopardised by the failure of Government and phone companies to respond to the growing body of evidence linking mobile phone use with health hazards. Tell us a little bit about your business.

Recommended Family Holidays is a website-based business that advertises hundreds of family friendly holidays that are recommended by other families who have been there and experienced them.

They include holiday cottages in France, UK & Ireland, villas in Cyprus, ski holiday accommodation and worldwide luxury hotels that are ideal for families.

How long has the business been going?

I set it up two years ago, about three months after my initial idea, which I had on holiday in France. On the way home I designed the structure of the website on the back of a scrap of paper, wrote down loads of ideas and when I got home I started learning how to go about implementing my ideas. Sadly when I became disabled and could no longer continue my previous job, which involved travelling, I had to think of something else to do that allowed me to work from home, work when I was well enough and would fit around the children. This was perfect and a completely new challenge. I didn’t know how to build or maintain a website or anything about advertising and marketing – the only thing I could do was the accounting which was the area I worked in before!

How does it fit in with family life?

The business fits around the kids and my disability perfectly. I can do the school run and during the holidays I tend to wake up early and do my work in bed before they get up and then pick up the computer again at the end of the day when my husband gets home.

What do you like most about working for yourself?

The best bit is the flexibility. Some days I do a full day’s work and also into the evening, other days I might answer one of two emails on my Blackberry. I used to run around like a lunatic trying to juggle home, work and the kids.

What are the worse bits about working for yourself?

One of the hardest things is the isolation – it’s difficult not to be able to bounce ideas off other people, or if you hit a

problem, it’s hard finding anyone to help.

Joining online network groups of other mums in business can be useful – they know what it’s like juggling everything, but finding someone in the same business as you for advice is hard. And of course, the money – income is not guaranteed and when you set up a new business you have to expect to not make a profit for at least three years.

Where do you go from here?

I’ve just launched RecommendedFamilyHotels.com and RecommendedFamilySkiing.com The key to my business is volume of quality holiday properties on the website and this will be my target over the next five years.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to set up in business?

You have to be highly motivated – it is really hard work! Draw up a plan and then pass your ideas by your friends to see if they think the idea will work.

Get as much advice as you can before you invest significant time and money and identify where your strengths and weaknesses are. Be realistic about your goals and timelines and your targets on profit – my dad used to say that if you gather enough information around you, the decision on whether or not to do something will make itself.

Nurseries come in all shapes and sizes and navigating your way through them can be daunting. Joanna Parry helps find the right nursery for you Day nurseries Day nurseries are usually open from 8am to 6pm and are a good option for working parents, as many will take babies from three months. The day follows structured activities interspersed with naps, meals and outdoor play. Day nurseries offer continuity of care and many will do half days or you can collect early.

Nursery schools Nursery schools are often more formal in the way they structure sessions. They usually take children from two and a half to three years old and provide a grounding for starting school, teaching letters, shapes, numbers and sometimes even early-stage reading. They are often smaller in scale with a personal touch, but might not be so convenient for working families.

Nursery classes in schools The first step in ‘real’ school life, these can be excellent for children who are ready for school and structured, educational play. They are convenient if you already have siblings at the school, but again sessions are often only three hours long, which may not be practical. Nursery classes in independent schools are more likely to offer full school-day sessions but nursery

classes attached to state schools are free! It’s important to remember that a school nursery place does not automatically guarantee a place in that school’s reception.

Montessori nurseries Montessori teaching is based on a method which fosters and guides children’s in-built curiosity for learning. In a Montessori nursery it is the children themselves who choose from the range of activities offered. Using sensory materials to provide intellectual, physical and psychological stimuli, Montessori schools aim to develop the child’s whole personality.

Pre-schools and playgroups Playgroups usually take children from two and a half, offering short sessions to ‘ease’ your child out of the home and into a more sociable learning environment where they can play, learn and have fun.

Playgroups have a varied mix of toys, games, singing,

story-time, arts and crafts and usually an outdoor area. Parents are encouraged to be active members of the playgroup and their small-scale settings are less daunting for shy children. They are also excellent value for money, as they tend to be not-for-profit and

are sometimes staffed by volunteers, with parents staying to help out.

SureStart Children’s Centres A number of centres offer affordable, flexible childcare for up to ten hours a day. Worth considering!

Nursery fees vary greatly depending on location, demand and what is offered.They start at around £100 a week and go up to four times that, but there are ways to get help with the costs: • Nursery Education Grant All three and four year olds are entitled to 15 hours of free early-education a week for 38 weeks of the year. This applies until they reach compulsory school age (the term following their fifth birthday), and can be applied flexibly over a minimum of three days.

Free early education places are available at a range of early years settings including nursery schools and classes, children’s centres, day nurseries, play groups and pre-schools and childminders. Your child will be eligible for the Nursery Education Grant from the term after their third birthday.

If you choose a nursery which costs more than the funding or use the nursery for more hours the grant will be offset against your bill.

Swimming

Water wings...

Choosing the right time to start swimming, along with the correct lessons, is vital to making it a positive experience and one that will encourage everyone to continue to swim in their free time.

Confidence is the most important part in the initial stages of swimming.

Parent and child classes are a lovely introduction to the activity and are successful if the parent feels confident with the teacher leading the sessions. The knock on effect being that the young child will feel confident and happy to continue to the next level of swimming without mum or dad in the water with them.

As an educationalist I also view the swimming pool as an extended classroom and see swimming lessons as more that just swimming. Most parents think of the physical benefits of swimming such as learning stroke techniques and water skills. However the physical skill of changing and organising one self before and after the lesson is a skill that should be recognised as an important part of the activity.

Social and Cognitive skills are also developed in the lesson as children learn to self evaluate, respond to the teachers’ instructions as well as learning many other cross-curricular skills in the wonderfully stimulating environment of the water.

At Marjorie McClure School in Chislehurst, where they are introducing new pre-school parent/child sessions for children with special needs, this experience is made even more profound with the fantastic new sensory equipment installed in their hydro pool. This promotes confidence while developing a variety of skills in the water.

Questions to ask…

• How many swimmers are in the class? There should be a good teacher to child ratio.

We have a maximum of eight children to a minimum of two teachers, which is a fantastic ratio to promote learning.

• What age can they start swimming lessons? We recommend three and a half, although some swimmers are ready to start structured lessons at three.

• What do I do if I have an older beginner? Until recently the ASA provided funding to promote pupils leaving primary school being able to swim 25 metres. Unfortunately this funding has been cut although they are trying to find some money to run the highly successful Top Up Lessons.

In view of this, one to one lessons may be the answer

to get the older child swimming.

• Is the teacher in the water with the children?

Although some governing bodies recommend that teachers are not in the water many teachers argue that eye-to-eye contact with swimmers is important to promote confidence and security in the water.

• Are buoyancy aids used?

It is good to avoid dependency on aids but initially they can install confidence in swimmers, particularly when familiarising them to a deep-water pool.

• Should children experience deep water swimming at all levels? It’s important that swimmers experience deep water, after all parents want

their child to swim as opposed to swim knowing they can touch the bottom of the pool.

• Do the swimmers work towards awards? Awards are really important in motivating swimmers and developing self-esteem.

Lorna Crust set up Aquakids 17 years ago and runs weekly swimming lessons at Bromley High School on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays and crash courses in the holidays. Aquakids alternate each term with either a distance or a skills award from the ASA or STA award scheme. The next crash course takes place from 2 to 5 April. Take your budding artist to an Art Gallery.
