Tooting Bec Athletics track saved from closure?

Tooting Bec’s Athletics Track has recently been the subject of powerful community action after a leaked document indicated there were plans to review how it is run. On November 9 over 200 local residents, including children who use the track regularly, joined a rally to show their support for keeping it open and affordable. Nicky Campbell, the radio and television presenter, Sadiq Khan MP and Jade Johnson, Olympic long jumper, were among those who turned out. Just days after the rally and after 1,000 signatures against closure were collected, it was announced that the track would not close, showing that community action can be powerful. However, the track’s future is still uncertain. Last year, 88,000 people used the track and it cost Wandsworth £100,000 to run. The Council will be meeting at the end of November to discuss how to reduce this cost. With Council budgets under pressure, they are not ruling anything out, the Council has said.

All I Want for Christmas is… For many stepmums, all they want for Christmas is a little harmony, and thanks to The Stepmum Coach this can be a reality. Founded by Chloe Tasch, an experienced life coach and stepmum herself, this unique service provides stepmums with the skills to deal with the challenges being thrown at them and a vision of what can be created with hard work and commitment. ‘As a step-mum to three children and mum to my own two, I found that getting the balance right when it came to our new ‘family’ was tricky to say the least,’ said Chloe. ‘The Stepmum Coach was created simply because when I was new to this arena a few years ago there was little help or support on offer and at times I felt alone and out of my depth. Prizes for young readers

Wandsworth residents are invited to join a series of beginners’ bike rides this winter. The rides will set off from the Mapleton Road entrance of King George’s Park, near the Wandle Recreation Centre, at 2pm on the last Sunday of every month. The rides will last between one and a half and two hours and are perfect for new or returning cyclists, with routes mostly off road or using quieter back streets. Each ride will be led by experienced, fully qualified Ride Leaders, and best of all they are free. In a record-breaking year, 40 children who completed this year’s ‘Mythical Maze’ Summer Reading Challenge were awarded certificates by the Mayor of Merton Councillor Agatha Akyigyina. At a special awards ceremony in Morden Library, she presented the children with prizes including books, vouchers, a family theatre ticket sponsored by Polka Theatre and a tablet. ‘It is great to see so many children taking up the reading challenge,’ said Councillor Akyigyina. ‘Reading is an essential skill and excellent hobby for everyone. The children’s dedication to this worthwhile challenge deserves to be recognised.’ Cabinet Member for Community and Culture, Councillor Nick Draper added, ‘With almost 2,000 children reading six books each, not to mention all the other 9,000 children who got part-way through the challenge, that’s over 20,000 books, almost a library! I’m so glad we’ve been able to keep all our libraries open and vibrant for our children in these austere times, and I’d like to thank the permanent staff and our many volunteers who make our library service as good as it is – in particular those who made the Summer Reading Challenge possible. And get ready for even more Merton children taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge next year. I’m looking forward to it already!’

News Writing competition Congratulations to Candida Jones who has won our Roving Reporter Writing competition. Candida is a local mother of three and lives in Wandsworth. She has 20 years experience in PR, print and television journalism, with an environmental and energy specialism. She is also a photographer and a linguist. In May 2014 she was elected as a Wandsworth Borough Councillor. It will be an added benefit for us, Candida Jones, our new because she will be able Roving Reporter! to report on local issues— the Tooting Athletics Track story is written by her. At time of going to press, she also told us a local 'scoop': Wandsworth Council has won approval to remove the white line on Tooting Common, which was separating cycling and pedestrians. Candida, like Families, is very keen on environmental topics, so her first piece will be on 'Community energy schemes'. We very much look forward to reading her piece in our Jan/Feb issue. School news Techo-savvy Girls at Streatham and Clapham High School have been participating fully in the digital world with a day of coding sessions, talks and workshops, including learning how to make a website in under an hour, writing a game for the web, and making a computer. The day was designed to excite and encourage the interest of pupils, particularly girls aged between 9 and 18, in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), and was kicked off in style with a visit from the Duke of York! He talked to the girls in a number of workshops and introduced them to his digital initiative iDEA, which he launched the following day. All children to start learning a language at primary school

As of this term, teaching a language will become mandatory from Key Stage Two (ages 7 to 11). Schools will be free to choose from French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Spanish, Latin or Ancient Greek. At Key Stage 3 the guidelines stipulate that a modern language must be taught. Most schools already have some provision for teaching languages, but the new guidelines mean that that there will be a more uniform approach across England, with a greater focus on grammar and written language. According to the DfES programme of study: “A highquality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.” With English teenagers scoring lowest for first foreign language skills in a recent European Commission study of 16 countries, the move to starting earlier is a positive first step towards improving language skills in all key stages. Second best! Pupils at schools in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea have achieved the second best GCSE performance in the country, according to figures released by the Department for Education. In total, 72.5% of pupils in the borough’s schools achieved five or more A* to C GCSEs (including English and mathematics), placing the borough second in the national table. ‘It has been well documented that the marking for this year’s English exams has been more rigorous than in recent years,’ said Kensington and Chelsea’s Cabinet Member for Education. ‘I'm very pleased to see our continued strong ranking in this table. It reflects a tremendous amount of hard work by teachers and pupils and confirms the high quality of the education on offer in the Royal Borough.’

More PE in primary schools Nine out of 10 primary schools have improved the quality of PE lessons thanks to the £150 million PE and sport premium, new research has shown. Introduced in 2013, the fund goes directly to primary school headteachers who can use it however they want, to provide PE and sporting activities for pupils. Figures released this September show that schools are getting real value for money, helping more children get active and healthy, and learning the confidence and skills that will help them to succeed in life. Schools have used the money to recruit more PE teachers and sports specialists to improve the quality of lessons or after-school clubs, buy new equipment, offer a wider selection of sports and free after-school clubs. The findings include: • 91% of schools reported an increase in the quality of PE teaching thanks to the funding, with the remainder reporting quality remained the same • 96% of schools reported improvements in pupils' physical fitness, 93% saw improvements in behaviour, and 96% thought the funding had contributed to a healthier lifestyle for their pupils • The proportion of schools using specialist PE teachers in lessons rose from 22% to 54% • Schools with a high proportion of free school meals (FSM) pupils were more likely to report improvements - 51% of schools with more than a quarter of FSM pupils reported an increase in available facilities compared to 39% of schools with the lowest level of FSM • 84% of schools reported an increase in pupil engagement with PE during school time and 83% saw an increase in participation in after-school clubs • A third of schools used the premium to reduce the costs of after schools clubs while a fifth made some clubs completely free to attend.

Especially if you’re a new mum, you realize that for the best part of your day you are lifting heavy stuff! Children are under more pressure and stress than ever. Noise, pollution, technology, peer pressure are all tapping away at their mental, emotional and physical health. There is no doubt that stress is taking a toll on our children's health and well-being. Mindfulness and relaxation exercises can help your child manage stress and anxiety, sleep better, concentrate, feel more calm and in control. It is easy to integrate and once it is a habit that children will come to enjoy.

Relaxation tips Start a regular practice of mindfulness, meditation or quiet reflection each day for yourself. When your child sees you doing this and see the benefits and effects on your mood and behaviour, they will show more interest. Create a calm corner or a special place with blankets and cushions. If there is space, let your child build a relaxing den. They will start to love coming to their special place. Keep the practice short and simple for your child. Use simple relaxation/visualisation books or Relax Kids CDs to help children relax and meditate. Build a regular short practice together- even if it is only 25 minutes. You could set a timer so they know when it is coming to an end. Combine the session with massage and hugs after and time to chat and children will come to appreciate and love their quality time. Try simple breathing exercises where they breathe in and out deeply, repeating 'I am peaceful' in their mind.

Button of Brilliance Tell your child that they have a magic button on their body. The button can be on their right elbow or right shoulder. When they press their button of brilliance, they start to feel great. Try and encourage them to smile while they touch the button of brilliance. They can imagine they are breathing in brilliance and shining like a brilliant star. They can imagine that everything they say and do is brilliant. Start using the button of brilliance often and remind your child they have it. At any point in the day you can touch their button or they can touch their button of brilliance. As they get used to their button of brilliance they can test it in more difficult situations

Cloak of Protection Tell your child they have an invisible Cloak of Protection. They can put on their imaginary cloak of protection and close their eyes and feel how it feels and breathe in some calming breaths. Tell your child that once the cloak of protection is on, any nasty words from others simply bounce off it and they are safe. Let them put on their cloak on the way to school and they can take it off when they come home or go to bed.

Confidence Switch Ask your child to think of people who are really confident. They can choose their favourite book or film characters, sports personalities or superheroes. Get them to stay still and imagine all those confident feelings entering their body. Breathe in confidence. Feel confidence all the way to their toes! As they have these confident thoughts and feelings ask ÂŠ vvoe - Fotolia.com them to squeeze their thumb and first finger together. This is their confidence switch and they can use it whenever they have a situation that they need a bit of extra confidence. All they have to do is squeeze their finger and thumb and feel those powerful confident feelings flooding back into the body.

Pants of Peace Close your eyes and become as still as possible. Become aware of your breathing. Feel the softness of your breath going in and coming out again. Spend a few moments watching your breathing. Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out. Imagine you are standing in front of your wardrobe. You see your Pants of Peace. How do they feel in your hands? Are they soft like clouds and cotton wool? Are they as light as feathers? How do you feel when you hold your Pants of Peace? Put the pants of peace on and

Saving money isn't just about putting aside a certain amount each month from your pay packet. One of the key principles of saving is making your money work even harder for you especially in this economic climate. However, in Britain we continue to make savings mistakes as our money management skills aren't quite up to scratch. Here's five of the foremost errors we make on a constant basis.

Not saving for retirement As young adults enter the world of work, pension schemes will almost certainly be the last thing on their mind. However, the importance of putting aside money into a pension - whether that's through a work-provided pension or a personal one, for instance - cannot be understated. For example, figures from the Pensions Policy Institute suggest the average percentage of working-age people currently accruing a non-state pension (2010/11) is 36 per cent for women and 39 per cent of men. Less than half! With the average retirement age continuing to increase - 62.4 for women and 64.6 for men - it makes sense to think about saving in a way in a way that maximises the potential for long-term growth. Ignoring your future savings, regardless of your current age, is a huge mistake.

Not investing It is better to have had your money accruing in investments than not have any at all. Not investing in any form - whether it’s through a standard savings account, stocks and shares or in bonds can be a huge mistake as investing helps you put your money to work for you. For instance, longterm stock investments usually gain over the long run. For young adults new to investing, it's important to think about your reasons for investing. Are you simply looking to make higher returns on your savings? Perhaps you might be putting some money aside to help pay for your child's education or looking at ways to maximise your income when you retire. Whatever your reason, investing is a medium- to long-term commitment that can deliver returns in the future.

Cashing in If you are in possession of investment bonds or a stocks and shares ISA, it can be tempting to cash in early if you have existing debts that need paying. However it's highly recommended you find other solutions to pay off your debt as cashing in assets early can be a costly move. Some investment bonds will allow you to withdraw some of all of your money whenever you need, but a 'surrender' penalty may apply if you do so (as well as associated taxes). Consequently, the money you saved over five years may take much longer to replace. Have a look for tax free savings options if you think you might have to cash early.

Living paycheck to paycheck If you consistently find your monthly paycheck doesn't last until the next pay day, you're classed as 'living paycheck to paycheck'. In order to make it to the month, most people falling under this bracket accumulate a lot of credit card debt or visit payday lenders just to tick them over. However this can spiral very quickly and, in the end, it's likely you won't be able to make ends meet in the near future.

Saving at the end of the month One of the most common errors from people starting to save is the mindset of saving cash at the end of the month. Forbes suggests you shouldn't be surprised if there isn't anything left to save at the end of the month as many of us tend to treat ourselves to a luxury good if we end up with spare cash. Consequently, it's important to get into the habit of setting cash aside at the start of the month. Dark nights: what to say when your child claims “I’m scared” at bedtime By Kathryn Mewes

I am sure you remember as a child the ‘delay tactics’ used to prevent bedtime arriving. Times have changed but children haven’t. They all push their boundaries and often the word ‘scared’ causes a strong reaction from a parent. The more you react the more the word ‘scared’ is used. The dark is a baby’s favourite place and this doesn’t change as children get older.

What to say to their comments as you leave the bedroom They say: “I need the light on.” Reply promptly: “Nothing to see at bedtime. Remember, your body grows when you sleep.”

They say: “Stay with me.” Reply: “Lay and relax and think of the day we went to the zoo. Name all the animals in your head. I love you very much, see you at breakfast time.”

Unfortunately we make the mistake. We are the ones that plant the seed in the child’s head.

They say: “I am scared.” Reply: “You are in your beautiful room, your cosy bed. That is a silly word to use at bedtime. Lay and relax and think of everyone in your class. Try and say all of their names and then all the teachers names in the school. See you at breakfast time.” The key is to keep calm and not to over complicate the situation. When your child claims they are scared promptly reassure them. We need to turn our lights off to the world – that is how we rest and grow.

We innocently make statements such as: • “Don’t worry, I am here.” • “I will leave the landing light on and then you will be OK.” • “It is OK the dark won’t hurt you.” • “There is nothing to be scared of.” By doing this we are flagging up the possibility for concern. This alarms the child and before you know it they are saying: “I am scared, you need to leave the light on!” “Don’t go, I need you here.”

It is so important to remain consistent. The moment you start letting your child dictate the bedtime routine things can start to go terribly wrong.

What is the best approach?

When they claim they are ‘scared of the dark’

Many children reach the stage of wanting to ‘change up’ the bedtime routine by demanding more stories or the light on, the door open, a drink, a snack – believe me I have heard them all!

I suggest you: • Sit in the room during the early evening with your child. They lay on their bed, you sit on the floor and have a chat in the pitch dark. • Talk about day trips gone by or family holiday memories. This gives them something to think about when bedtime comes around. • Explain to them on how our body can relax far easier in the dark. • State the fact that the bedroom is the same whether in darkness or light. Nothing changes when the light turns off. • State “Oh I love the darkness, my body instantly starts to relax.”

It is best to talk through the bedtime routine with your child once they are aged 18 months or older. Talk while they are in the bath: “Now, after bath time we are going to stay upstairs. We are going into your bedroom to have 2 stories. After story time we are going to have a big hug and then I will say ‘See you at breakfast time’. The light will be turned off and I will close the door as I leave.”
