Support for Dads A new partnership between the NCT and BabyBjorn helps to improve local support for Dads. Award for local lad 8-year-old Samuel Groves from Wimbledon has been selected as the Explore Learning National Young Writer of the Year. An annual event organised by Explore Learning, the competition aims to encourage and inspire children to have the confidence to write an imaginative story in 500 words. This year’s theme was ‘Adventure Stories’ and Wimbledon Park Primary School student Samuel’s winning entry, “The Blue Guitar”, takes the reader on the journey of a blue guitar left abandoned on a rubbish dump. “We were incredibly impressed by both the quantity and quality of stories submitted,” says Heather Garrick from Explore Learning. “It is fantastic to see so many children enthused about writing, and there are obviously a lot of very talented young writers in the UK." A week in the great outdoors Children from Hornsby House School in Balham enjoyed a memorable week away this summer, experiencing a wide range of actionpacked, outdoor activities. While Year 4 went to PGL at Boreatton Park in Shropshire and abseiled, canoed and slid down the zip wire, Year 5 crossed the Channel to Normandy and Year 6 having breakfast before the walk up took part in activities such as archery, fencing Ben Stack and the obstacle course. Year 6 enjoyed a sixday course of team building and adventure in a stunning, remote location on the West coast of Scotland, climbing a mountain, swimming in the sea loch, fishing for lobsters and building rafts. "The Hornsby House school journeys give all our children confidence and a great sense of achievement,” says Jon Gray, Headmaster. “The children return to school more positive, independent and ready for the next challenge." www.hornsby-house.co.uk

Kids re-claim their streets UK charity Sustrans has launched a Dream Street design competition to see what children across the country would like to see on the street where they live. The competition encourages children to think about what they would like to see outside of their front door, to make it safer and more attractive for them to get around by bike and on foot. "Sustrans believes that every child should have the freedom to explore, play outdoors, and make their own way to school and beyond,” says Paul Osborne, Sustrans Director of School Travel. “We're inviting young people aged 7 to 14 to get involved and tell us what kind of street they'd like to see to make it easier for them to travel independently."

Dry nights to come…

Star of Calendar Girls and Loose Women Lynda Bellingham is backing Dry and Mighty, an awareness campaign from ERIC, a national children’s charity. Dry and Mighty aims to raise awareness of bedwetting which affects 1 in 12 children, while supporting families in managing or overcoming the problem. “In life, there are little things that can have a really big impact on a family and bedwetting is one of those things - but it doesn’t have to be,” says Lynda. “Any parent with a child who wets the bed knows how the embarrassment makes it hard to talk openly about it. The child can be afraid to take part in sleepovers or school camps in case anyone finds out, so it’s reassuring to know help is at hand.” The ERIC Helpline is 0845 370 8008 or find out more at www.eric.org.uk

Osteopathic Centre for Children moves to SW London The Osteopathic Centre for Children, a charitable organization established over 20 years ago, has now moved to Wandsworth. Specialising in the osteopathic treatment of babies, children, and pre- and post-natal mums, the OCC was founded to help alleviate all kinds of childhood problems.

Based on the classical principle of finding and then maintaining health, paediatric osteopathy gently re-balances children’s bodies, enabling them to harness their own vital resources to optimum effect. One of their aims is to make osteopathic treatment available to all children and mothers before and after birth regardless of their ability to pay. Ride with the family This autumn have fun with family and friends and get cycling! With British Cycling and Sky, you can take part in Sky Ride Local rides in towns and cities across the country. The bike rides are free, community bike rides, giving you a chance to get out and explore your local area. There are rides at four different levels from traffic-free rides in parks and on bike paths, to more challenging rides taking your cycling a bit further. Gymnastics awards Winstrada, the Aesthetic Sports Development Foundation, have updated their Gymnastic and Trampolining development and award scheme.

Following an 18 month trial, Grades 1 and 2 are now based on the Rebound Therapy.org training course programme and are an ideal way of helping people with a wide range of learning and physical disabilities to develop many skills whilst exercising and having fun.

New market garden involves local schools and families in creative workshops Watching dozens of young volunteers from Orange RockCorps digging, painting and scrubbing old railings in Fulham’s Heritage Market Garden, it’s hard to remember the plot in its old incarnation as a littlevisited rose garden on the fringes of South Park’s 20acre plot.

Marshalling the activity is Alex Kennaugh, Chairman of the Friends of South Park. The project is part of the Friends’ campaign to encourage families and schools to take advantage of what the park offers.

“Whether you’re a parent who drops in regularly for a children’s natural art class, a nature-lover who wants to be part of South Park’s gardening club, or someone who is interested in heirloom plants or meditation, we hope to engage and connect more people with our natural world,” says Kennaugh.

South Park opened in 1904 and, in those more genteel times, boasted a bandstand and a refreshment pavilion. During both world wars, the greens were given over to allotments, which neatly echoes the plans for the Market Garden today.

To get the ball rolling, Friends of South Park grew seedlings in their own gardens. Key to the ongoing success of the garden is the involvement of local schools, which will plant and maintain one of the newly constructed raised beds and will help supervise the bird and bat boxes.

During the winter, The Shed, as the now vibrantly muralled building in the garden is known, is going to be the site for Beans and Bugs – drop-in natural art classes for children – as well as perfume-making workshops, tai-chi and nutrition classes and Christmas wreath-making days.

The ambitions for the garden are high, and the Friends of South Park are keen to hear from anyone with ideas or time to contribute to the scheme.

Rethink your garden to boost its naturefriendly credentials There are a staggering three million gardens in Greater London. That’s roughly 38,000 hectares, ranging from tiny, decked corners to rambling jungles. The London Wildlife Trust’s Garden for a Living London campaign encourages garden-owners to make the most of this patchwork of green spaces. Gardens can be mini nature reserves, reduce climate change and help absorb flood waters. Simply making a small pond, planting a broad-leafed tree or adding a green roof to a shed can make a real difference. The ugly cost of beauty Stop Barbie’s manufacturer cutting down Indonesian rainforests

Poor Barbie – Ken has ditched her via a high-profile campaign spearheaded by Greenpeace. Why? Because he doesn’t date girls who are into deforestation, and that, courtesy of Barbie’s maker Mattel, is what the fashion icon is apparently linked with, according to Greenpeace.

Greenpeace says it has discovered that Mattel uses paper pulp in its Barbie packaging that is partly sourced from Indonesian rainforests. Swathes of these forests, home to Sumatran tigers, orang-utans and elephants, are now scarred, barren scrub. Asia Pulp and Paper (APP), which supplies Mattel, intends to continue deforestation in Indonesia until 2015 unless it is stopped.

Greenpeace’s campaign now extends to Hasbro, Disney and Lego, all implicated through their use of APP. Sign the campaign online or call Mattel direct – see www.greenpeace.org.uk – to let the big companies know that the mums who buy the toys won’t put up with this.

In to bat See a startling variety of bats this month on nature walks in Barnes

With mild evenings and earlier sunsets, September is the ideal time to join a Big Bat Walk at the WWT London Wetland Centre in Barnes. Seven species of bat live or hunt in the wetland reserve, making it one of the best places in London to study them. Armed with a bat detector, you might spot a pipistrelle (pictured), a Daubenton’s bat, which hunts over water, or a Leisler’s bat, the ‘hairy-armed bat’.

Evenings start with a talk by a bat expert and include a visit to the Berkeley Bat House. They are open to adults and over-eights (who must be accompanied) and happen each Thursday until September 22nd. To book a place, £10, call 020 8409 4400; www.wwt.org.uk.

Maggie’s treasure trove

Maggie O’Brien concludes her series with her own ‘Pick of the Postcodes’ Writing this column has been such a pleasure and such an eye opener too. Over the last eighteen months I have discovered that South West London has some truly wonderful areas to visit, real gems in fact. I do hope you have been able to try out a few for yourselves. I have so many favourites! I’d definitely include the wonderful Brixton market and some fabulous hidden secrets of Chelsea.

Sadly this is my last column, but before I say goodbye... one last area I would like to touch on is Tooting and my all time favourite outdoor swimming pool: Tooting Bec Lido.

Jess Darby, who used to work for Families and knows the area well, gives us her take on what’s happening in Tooting...

Brixton Market

On Mayfield Gymnastics Club...

“This club, in the grounds of Springfield Hospital, is tucked away but an excellent gymnastics centre with pro equipment and curriculum. They run pre-school sessions and holiday programmes too. Well worth checking out”.

Also...Tooting Leisure Centre If outdoor swimming isn’t for you, the Leisure centre has a 33 metre swimming pool as well as a warmer 12 metre teaching pool. There is a Kinetika Fitness Suite, Indoor Cycling and 3 Group Exercise Studios. With soft play for younger children, birthday party facilities, a Gymnastic club and even a drop in pre-school trampolining, this is an excellent venue. There is a café too.

Tooting Bec lido

Tooting Bec Lido Whenever there is something written about outdoor pools in the UK, the Lido in Tooting is always mentioned as a favourite. The whole experience of swimming outside is refreshing and having been around for over a 100 years, this 100 meter long pool is exceptional.

‘Tooting market has an eclectic mix of stalls, from fortune telling to exotic beauty parlours, from North African cuisine to haberdashery’. Eyvind Ryans Wandsworth Council.

This well known covered market, sells foodstuffs from all over the globe.

Jess says, “This is a proper urban beach. When the sun is out, you can’t beat a trip to the Lido. The kid’s pool is safe and fun. You can choose a good spot under the trees and make camp for the day. Take a picnic, or treat yourselves to chips and ice creams from the café. All South West London life is there”.

Recently, ‘Brick Box’, an innovative company has been working closely with the council and the local community to develop ideas to enhance this public space. Projects give a creative ‘heart’ to the town centre and some artists have already set up exciting and creative activities (www.wandsworth.gov.uk for further details on the market).

On Meza – a local café...

“Although tiny, this is an impressive place to take all the family. On my last visit there were three chefs serving up plate after plate of delicious Lebanese food.

Charming staff and a real feast but all on small plates so not overwhelming” says Jess.

This is for young people aged 7-14 years and is brilliant. Wandsworth Music Centre ‘helps children learn to play a musical instrument while developing a wide range of supporting musical skills; enjoy making music and performing with other children; and establish a love of music for life’. On Fujisan – a Japanese Restaurant...

Local parent, Eleanor Parkman says, “We have found the music school at the professional centre to be excellent. It is run by kind, talented and committed staff.

My daughter had the chance to immerse herself in music for a whole morning for less than the cost of a 30 minute lesson in the private sector”.

So... from the incredible collection of theatres to the delightful cupcakes on offer; South West London certainly does appear to have it all.

Close to the tube, this is another of Jess’s favourites. “This was great when the children were small. The staff are very accommodating and there is a good lunch deal (£7.50 Bento box and miso soup deal). Highchairs are provided and it is usually quiet so the staff don’t seem to mind the mess or noise. As the children get older there is a Fujisan early bird supper”, (2 courses for approx £11.50).

Visit Brixton Market in Electric Avenue, it is a truly lively and dynamic area (see Families South West, issue March 2011 and FamiliesSouthWest.co.uk).

The Artyard in East Sheen certainly had the wow factor and is a charming place to involve the whole family in all things creative (FSW Jan/Feb 2011 issue). Alternatively, Arty Party is always a firm favourite , or sit back and relax with your friends and a glass of wine while you paint at The Bridgewater Pottery Café in Fulham (FSW April 2010 issue).

Try out the market in Northcote Road, Clapham/Battersea (see issue July/August 2011 and FamiliesSouthWest.co.uk).

Generations of families are still running some of the Fulham market stalls (see Families South West, issue April 2010 for other ideas in SW6). Picking up fresh fruit and vegetables is easy if you live near Tatchbrook Street Market in Pimlico (see issue September 2010 and FamiliesSouthWest.co.uk).

My favourite theatres...

Having been spoilt and self contained living in Wimbledon for some years, with the New Wimbledon Theatre and the Polka Theatre (FSW March 2010 issue), it would be easy to miss all the other opportunities in South West London. The Chelsea Theatre (FSW July/August 2010), Tara Studio (FSW November 2010 issue), the Putney Arts Theatre (May 2010 issue) and the Lantern Arts Centre (December 2010 issue), to name but a few.

My favourite eateries...

Gorgeous and delicious cupcakes at Love Bakery (FSW July/August 2010 issue). Or taste one from Hummingbirds (FSW April 2011 issue). Try a yummy one from Yummishes in East Sheen (FSW Jan/Feb 2011 issue). How about afternoon tea in a wonderful setting opposite Clapham Common; try Macaron, the French Boulangerie (July/August 2011 issue).

Want old fashioned toys, musical instruments and books? Well established toy shop, Pandemonium has it all, in East Sheen (FSW Jan/Feb 2011 issue). Bereavement and the family

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) said “nothing can be said to be certain except death and taxes.”

Both of these experiences can bring you a multitude of thoughts, feelings and emotions not least anger, stress, anxiety, depression and perhaps in some cases guilt.

Bereavement, the loss of someone close to you, can be devastating to individuals and indeed families and you and your family are in a state of mourning when you are still grieving the loved one.

Sigmund Freud (1836-1939) wrote that mourning can be as if a ‘hole appears in our lives’. A hole that you or your loved one may find hard to fill.

How children react to death as indeed with adults depends on a number of factors: •Closeness and role of relationship •Expected or not •Age and comprehension Infants are in tune to changes of emotional climate in the family, pre-school often seeing death as temporary and over 5’s have greater understanding of the permanence and adolescents often find it hard to understand and verbalise feelings. Adults as with the young go through stages of grief including: Denial, Anger, Guilt, Acceptance, Integration.

You may notice your children are showing these stages and the signs can often be anxiety, uncertainty, being more clingy, outburst of emotions such as anger or sulking. Children are very in tune to emotions in families and with illness or raised voices and any kind of loss or separation, may blame themselves for what’s going on I have been working as a counsellor/ psychotherapist since 2001 initially seeing individuals and over the last few years couples and now families. To back up my own clinical experience I’ll lean on The Royal College of Psychiatrists 1 who note and I paraphrase here that signs a child is struggling include: • Longer period of depression, with loss of interest in daily activities and events • Difficulties with sleep, appetite, fears of being alone • Acting like a much younger child for a long time • Denying that the family member has died • Imitating the dead person all the time • Talking repeatedly about wanting to join the dead person • Withdrawing from friends • A sharp drop in school performance, or refusal to attend school.

Experience generally shows that confusion and uncertainty in your child can prolong acceptance that the deceased has gone. So it is usually a good idea to let your child know the truth at an early stage thereby opening the door on any denial and triggering acceptance.

Answering questions and listening to, and really ‘hearing’, your child’s view of death is important.

This can help to diffuse any anger, anxiety or self blame or guilt. Children can also become afraid others around them are going to die and on a deeper level experience this as abandonment. So often this is displayed in manoeuvres and attempts to sabotage loved ones from leaving in any way.

You may recognise this perhaps at bedtime or if you are going somewhere linked to death, illness or just out for the evening.

Talking and listening to others in the family whilst being mindful of ‘ageappropriate’ honesty and openness can help to move the family on through stages of grieving thus integrating the death into the life of the family. It is not unusual that ANY experience of loss or sometimes change such as, friendships, personal possessions, moving home or pets can trigger unresolved grief thus amplifying the feelings. Recognising that someone isn’t coping with the loss can give understanding to some unusual behaviour and emotional outbursts.

Sometimes if you or a loved one are not coping then in addition to talking in the family, accessing talking therapy can provide a neutral space to work through your distress.

Returning to work without a bump!

According to a recent national survey, employers turn down nearly half of women’s requests for part-time/ flexible work following maternity leave. It doesn’t have to be that way for you. Zoe Manns reports…

If you are an expectant mum or early into your maternity leave, going back to work may feel like a distant prospect but there are some important steps that you could take now to maximise your chance of securing the terms you would like when/ if you do decide to return.

Zoe Manns, a mother of two and experienced Employment Lawyer is the founder of MummysatWork.com, a consultancy that provides specialist advice and guidance to new mums to help them successfully and amicably negotiate a change in their employment terms with their employer, whilst maintaining their career progression. She says, “Despite a raft of ‘family friendly’ legislation, there is still much employer resistance to part-time work, particularly for professional women and those in senior managerial roles. This may in part be explained by changing market conditions such as the emergence of a global economy, working days having to accommodate different time zones, high commitment management practices and restructuring tendencies but perhaps also the ‘male model of working’ which includes unpredictable and long working hours, geographical mobility and networking outside work time”.

Returning to work after having a baby can be challenging in the best circumstances (confidence may be at a low, there may be concerns/feelings of guilt about leaving a baby with a new carer etc) but it is particularly stressful if added to that there is a reluctance on the employer’s part to facilitate a work-life balance. Many women are taken by surprise when, having been out of the workplace for some time, they find their employer unwilling to accommodate their request for flexible working after all.

Having been approached countless times by women whose applications had already been turned down, I realised that there was virtually no specialist help available to them to help them negotiate new terms with their employer on their return to work. As a result, I decided to launch MummysatWork.com.

The great weaning debate

It’s one of the questions that is bound to be on your mind if you have a young baby: when is the right time to wean? Over the years the guidelines have changed. Many of our parents gave us rusks in our milk when we were only a couple of months old, and when I had my first child nearly 6 years ago I was advised to start weaning as early as 4 months. Now, many mums wait until their baby is 6 months. Either way, weaning need not be a huge chore.

Department of Health guidelines recommend that the best time to start weaning is 6 months, as it is thought the stomachs of younger babies aren’t mature enough to cope with a more diverse diet, and that early weaning can increase the risk of infections and the development of allergies like eczema and asthma. Premature babies may not be ready by 6 months so consult your health visitor before introducing solids. Often, it’s best to be guided by your own baby. Babies can be ready for weaning if they:

Many parents start with baby rice mixed with formula or breast milk to get them used to a new texture. Move on to sweet vegetables like carrots, sweet potato and parsnip and fruits - apple, pear, peach and mango. Mashed bananas and avocados are good choices as they don’t need to be cooked.

After introducing single tastes, move on to combinations such as potato and parsnip, leak and peas, plum and pear. Once you are well established on the first foods introduce protein fish and chicken are good as they have a mild taste and can be mixed with vegetables. As your baby starts to chew, mash their food instead of pureeing and gradually let the lumps get bigger.

By the time your baby is about seven months old it should be eating solids three times a day, which could include vegetables like courgette, broccoli and spinach as well as meat, fish, hard-boiled egg and cheese.

• choose a time of day when your baby is not too tired or hungry – late morning is good • add milk to new tastes to encourage baby to try them • once they’re used to a taste, move that food to the evening meal and introduce another food at lunchtime • as long as you don’t wean your baby before 6 months there’s no need to sterilise feeding utensils • puree your own food if you’ve used very little or no salt in its preparation • make purees in a large batch and freeze in ice cube trays. Once frozen pop them into labelled freezer bags

• show interest in the food you or your older children are eating • can stay in a sitting position and hold their head steady • can look at food, grab it and put it in their mouths by themselves • have doubled their birth weight • can swallow food. Babies who are not ready will tend to spit their food out and get more on their faces than in their mouths.

Never start weaning before your baby is 17 weeks old or put solids such as baby rice or rusk into your baby’s bottle. Remember, there is no rush to wean!

At around this time you can introduce finger foods such as soft-cooked carrots, pasta, slices of melon, strips of omelette or buttered toast, which encourage your baby to chew and will help with their pincer grip. Always stay close to your baby when they have finger foods in case they choke.

You DON’T need to cook everything yourself!

Remember, solid food shouldn’t replace formula or breast milk. Babies between the ages of 6 to 9 months still need at least 16oz of milk daily.

There are no medical or health reasons against raising your baby as vegetarian, providing you feed them a well balanced diet. You can make sure your baby has enough iron through pulses, dried fruits, fortified cereals and green vegetables. Vitamin C helps absorption of iron from food so include fruit or juice in the same meal as iron-rich foods.

Protein can be obtained from pulses, egg, dairy products, tofu, bread and meat substitutes.

Allergies and intolerances Almost 1 in 12 young children suffer from a food allergy. Milk and egg allergies are the most common and tend to disappear before adulthood.

The other common allergens are peanuts and tree nuts, fish and seafood, wheat, soy, sesame and kiwi. If there is a history of allergies in your family think about delaying the introduction of certain foods. Start out slowly with very basic purees and wait 3 days after each food is introduced before trying a new taste to ensure your baby doesn’t have an allergic reaction. If you decide to wean before six months don’t offer eggs, dairy products, fish, shellfish, citrus fruits or foods containing gluten. Avoid nuts until 3 years of age and honey until your baby is 1.

Lactose intolerance is not an allergy but is the inability to digest the sugar in milk. Once the problem is dealt with and the gut has recovered the intolerance will disappear, but while the condition lasts it can be managed by using a soybased or low-lactose formula. Most babies grow out of lactose intolerance by 6 - 9 months.

Gluten sensitivity can cause celiac disease which, although rare, can be serious. Symptoms of gluten intolerance include loss of appetite, poor growth, swollen abdomen and pale, bulky and smelly stools. Foods containing gluten i.e. anything made from wheat, rye, barley or oats should not be introduced into any baby’s diet before 6 months.

When buying baby cereals choose gluten-free varieties and look for gluten-free products such as soy, corn, rice, buckwheat spaghetti and potato flours.

There are two types of food allergies. Some are easy to spot – as soon as food is eaten an itchy rash develops, usually around the mouth or eyes.

There may also be swelling of the lips, tongue and mouth, runny nose, watering eyes, vomiting, tummy cramps and diarrhoea. In severe reactions there may be difficulty breathing, wheezing and shortness of breath and a drop in blood pressure, which requires urgent medical attention. These reactions are often more common in older children and teenagers.

Other allergies can be more difficult to detect, especially if they have delayed allergies. These are sometimes called food intolerances and tend to be more of a problem in infancy. Delayed allergies may cause symptoms such as eczema, reflux, colic, poor growth, diarrhoea or constipation. However, all of these symptoms commonly occur during childhood and an allergy may not be the cause.

Trying to work out if the problem is due to a food allergy can be difficult and requires the help of an experienced doctor. However, exclusion diets may be possible with the help of a dietician.

New research has been published that reveals that stress can actually help when studying for exams.

In fact, the stress that can occur when revising at the last minute helps the brain form stronger memories, suggesting that this way of studying for exams might be the best way to learn.

Scientists have discovered that when we are stressed, hormones are produced within our bodies that cause changes within our brain cells, helping memories to be retained in a more productive and efficient manner. The stress hormones cortisol and adrenalin actually cause changes in the way the genes inside neurons function, so enhancing their learning ability. Lead researcher Professor Hans Reul, neuroscientist at the University of Bristol, said that his findings suggest that studying while feeling stressed could help increase the ability of students when learning. "We often find that unpleasant memories are the ones that stay with us for the rest of our lives,” says Professor Reul.

“This is because of the role that stress plays. Essentially the stress hormones are enhancing the process that is normally taking place when you are learning." But Dr Reul warned that while some stress can be good for retaining information, too much stress may well have the opposite effect. "When we are extremely stressed it is not possible to pick up any new information," he adds.

"The brain goes into an override mode and so the memory formation is not efficient. Chronic, long term stress is also not good."

High quality education in a difficult economic situation Fewer children are being sent to independent schools after average fees have climbed above £13,000 for the first time.

According to the Independent Schools Council, the number of children in private education fell this year, dropping for the second year in a row as fees rose faster than earnings increased. Information from the ISC shows the average parent will pay £13,179 in annual fees this year which is a 4.6 per cent increase on last year. While the economy continues to force many private schools to shut every year and boarding schools are looking more and more to foreign pupils to fill their numbers, private school pupils fell by 786 this year.

However, school leaders are insisting that the figures actually show a positive result for the private sector in the face of enormous pressure on family incomes.

“ISC independent schools are showing remarkable resilience against a difficult economic background, reflecting the high quality of education that our schools offer to parents and the value for money that this represents,” says David Lyscom, ISC chief executive. He continued to say that the average fee rise was the second lowest since 1994 and showed that independent schools were "very sensitive to the needs of parents and doing everything they can to keep fees to a minimum".

Your children’s education starts at home How home life can make a big difference in the education of children

Did you know that just keeping books in your home can significantly increase your children’s likelihood of going to university and that’s irrespective of background, size of family, where they live, parents occupation or any other social factor? Further research has also shown that the biggest impact on a child’s educational development is reading to them from a very early age. So if your child is starting school for the first time this year, or they are already progressing rapidly through the school years, undertaking a few small activities at home can make a huge difference to the development and education of children and build powerfully on the learning they receive from school.

Why bother...

Sally Goddard Blythe, a child development expert and director of the Institute for NeuroPhysiological Psychology in Chester, claims that children are failing to develop vital physical and communication skills after being denied interaction with their parents during their early years, as many parents are not engaging them in games, rhymes, music and books.

She believes that much of the reason for this is parents using electronic toys to keep toddlers occupied, rather than interacting with them in a more traditional manner, and that this can affect a child’s development even to the point of the child being wrongly thought to have behavioural problems.

Studies in Britain have shown that children who are supported by their families with homework are likely to perform significantly better in academic examinations at 16 years old and beyond than those who do not. Recent reports show boys are still having difficulties with literacy (reading, writing or spelling), and girls having difficulties with numeracy, despite improvements in primary school results. Even the best and brightest teachers can be hard pressed to address the individual needs of every child, especially in a crowded classroom.

And what if your child shows a particular interest or aptitude towards a certain topic? A love of physics can start at any age. Similarly, if your child finds a topic difficult, your interest as a parent will help, no matter how well or how fast your child understands what they are being taught. Parents small actions can plug these gaps, support children and really boost their development.

What activities can be taken?

Activities that involve reading, listening, writing, number awareness, sequencing, counting and learning to become aware of the world that surrounds them are perfect. They will help encourage a love and understanding of language, maths and science which are basic tools to boost any child’s education.

• Keep a library – A few books placed in reach of your children to pick up any time for browsing or talking about. A recent study conducted in the US found that children coming from a “bookish home” remained in education for around three years longer than young people born into families with empty bookshelves.

• Read to your children – Sharing stories and reading together are vital to the development of a child’s literacy skills. Just ten minutes at the start or end of the day will be enough to help them to acquire the skills they need to develop as a reader.

• Download free games, activities, and worksheets online – There are many websites offering free activities that encourage basic skill development for children and keep it fun.

• Get number crunching – Talk about numbers and show them how useful numbers are in almost everything we do. Measure their height and work out how much they have grown, spot speed signs and funny number plates, say the time out load and how long before the next stop, compare the prices of

vegetables in the supermarket and how much money you will need to pay, how long tea will take to cook, how much milk you pour on your cornflakes, etc.

• Problem solving – Encourage your children to think things through and work things out for themselves. Ask them why they think metal goes rusty, why the sky is grey, why the Police car makes a noise, etc. Point out things that are different to home - buildings, accents, clothes, food, and customs. Experts suggest giving your child a simple map of where they are going, also following a recipe together are great techniques to boost concentration.

• Keep talking – New experiences and discoveries are always stimulating, so encourage your child to try new things. Look for opportunities to talk to your child about their day - children enjoy sharing what they are learning.

• Put a pen in their hands –- Help them develop their handwriting skills by writing words and sentences for them to copy. Point out examples of lovely handwriting and pictures when you see them, encourage them to ‘sign’ birthday and Christmas cards to their friends, and always get them to sign their own artwork.

Overall, making sure your activities with them are fun will make a real difference. Children thrive on encouragement, someone who will listen to them when they are struggling as well as achieving.

Giving them a little personal attention that they can’t get in the classroom, all add up to fun learning for your child and peace of mind for you that they are achieving the best they can.

With the constant wail that schools focus on teaching children to pass tests, adding out of school activities gives your child a chance to shine and have fun outside the classroom. Hobbies lead to new friends, they reveal hidden talents and develop skills that could become a real advantage one day.

Everyone is good at something, and finding it is a huge confidence booster.

Just because you drop the ball in PE doesn’t mean you wouldn’t be great at swimming or dancing; the child who isn’t interested in the bright lights can still shine in an arts class or on the sports field.

There really is plenty of variety to choose from, as we’ve been finding out.

Practical Considerations While it might seem tempting to guide your child to musical, sporting and artistic genius outside the classroom, they need time for just ‘chilling’ too. Liz Baker is a parent, and also a school teacher. In her view: "there is no point in enrolling in every class going. Don't assume your child will get an academic head start. They will only benefit academically when they are ready, and not before. Remember children get exhausted too - give them time to themselves. Children should choose and be given a taste of each activity before deciding if he or she wants to commit to it long-term - there’s no gain in putting your child under pressure."

• Think ahead. You may need to put your child’s name on a waiting list, particularly for more popular classes • Stay local. Walking distance is best, otherwise getting there and back becomes another chore • Great staff. The best leaders are enthusiastic, skilled, trained, and have eyes in the back of their heads to spot children who need a little more encouragement, particularly when they are new and might feel shy • Additional costs. Will you need specialist clothes or equipment?

Does the club offer these second-hand? Is there an annual subscription or insurance charge? How much are exam fees?

• Look-see. Many clubs offer a free trial class, especially if they run on a term basis. If that’s not possible, ask to pay weekly for the first two sessions • Give it time. Some children are prone to dropping out. Unless you think they are completely and utterly unsuited to the activity, or really, really hate it, stick it out for at least a couple of terms.

Music Music gives amazing educational and developmental benefits. From just three months, babies actively enjoy music groups, and as soon as they can shake a rattle, they can join in too. Belting out a song teaches rhythm and helps develop speech.

Those hand actions you do when you sing nursery rhymes? They boost spatial reasoning, which will later be useful in maths and science.

Playing an instrument is great for dexterity and co-ordination. It teaches teamwork and responsibility, and improves concentration and memory. At six or seven, children night start with a recorder, keyboard or violin. From eight, guitar is an option. Brass and wind instruments are best left to older children, when children can join their school band or orchestra.

Languages With over 60 different languages now spoken in schools across the UK, we are bringing up our children in a truly multicultural society.

Experts agree that the earlier a child starts learning other languages, the better. Children are extremely receptive to new ideas and information, especially when they’re having fun.

Preschool language classes build confidence and familiarity on an instinctive level, typically through songs, dances and simple games.

School age children should be more aware of grammar and syntax, and supplementing school lessons with a language club will pay dividends boosting their confidence, vocabulary and appreciation of different cultures.

Active Bodies Regular exercise is hugely beneficial to long term health and fitness. It’s easy to see the value of activities that help children burn off some energy at the end of the school day, or build skills in sports which they already enjoy at school. Even the tiniest children can benefit from the social side of playing team games, or the fun element of learning a 'solo' sport like trampolining, tennis or diving.

When children are engaged, they pay more attention - 61% of young people claim to be better behaved in PE than other lessons, in most cases simply because they enjoy it more.

This is particularly true amongst boys, and children who admit to misbehaving at school - of whom 73% claim to be better behaved in PE lessons.

"I like acting and pretending to be someone else and learning songs and dances with my friends," says fiveyear-old William, who has attended a children's performing arts club for nearly a year. For boosting the confidence of shy or reserved children, drama can't be beaten. And the skills that a child learns through performing arts classes will stand them in good stead throughout their lives - twenty years down the line, they'll thank you when it comes to addressing a meeting room or chairing a conference.

Performing arts classes are not only for children with starry aspirations.

Theatre arts bring literature to life, and build self-confidence. Learning to perform in front of an audience can help children with public speaking; role playing and improvisation give their minds freedom to develop while developing empathy for other people’s feelings.

Arts and Crafts Children love to get messy, and the chance to create their own piece of art is something special. Even the smallest child loves the sensation of clay between fingers, or the thrill of splodging finger paints on paper.

Expressing themselves through the arts - whether through painting, drawing, story writing or making 'junk models' - gives children the freedom to unleash their creativity and push boundaries.

By providing a balance and a creative outlet, art skills complement and assist literacy and numeracy skills in the classroom. If you’re not artistically inclined yourself, or never have the time to sit down and help your child create a wonderful cushion, collage or clay model, why not leave it to the experts?

What do the children say?

School support Parents choose out of school academic subjects for their children for a host of reasons - perhaps your little one excels in maths and you want to give them more challenging and stimulating tuition - or maybe you simply want to supplement what is being taught at school by introducing the skills needed for independent study and fluency in the subject. Whatever your reason, group or individual tuition can make a huge difference to your child's progress and greatly enhance their school-based studies.

More and more parents, particularly in London, are hiring private tutors to give their child the edge when it comes to achieving in class, or practicing and preparing for exams. If your child is bringing home good school reports and is happy and settled, there’s no need; however there’s no longer any stigma in finding extra help if you want to, and the best classes are fun as well as educational.

How much extra-curricular activity do children think they should be doing, and what are their favourites?

• Imogen, 8, says: “I did tap dancing with my friend Molly but I didn’t like it, but I like Brownies and I’m in the school rounders team. I just wish we beat other schools more often!”

• Her brother, Hamish, 11, concentrates on sports: “I do football, cricket and rugby at school, and karate on Saturday mornings. The extra practice means I get on better teams at school” • Danny, 12, says, “When I was younger I did football club, recorder club, cooking and chess club, but now I’m at senior school, I’m just doing football for now” • Jackson, 9, says: “I go to swimming, football and piano classes. I’d like to give up the piano because I don’t want to practise every day, but my Mum won’t let me” • Ruth, 3, says: “I do ballet like Angelina Ballerina and I wear a tutu.”

Curriculum boosting After-school activities and clubs are a great way to complement and extend what children have precious little time for at school, especially art, music and languages 2. Socialising Claire, mother of four under 10 year-olds, believes it is important for children to make new friends outside school: “It really helps them stand on their own and develop their confidence. There isn’t that pecking order thing that you have in the playground. It’s a chance to break out of whatever mould you’ve been cast in” 3. After-school care When both parents work, after-school activities on school premises can be incredibly valuable. Most schools offer a mix of teacher—run and externally—organised clubs after school, and even at weekends 4. A sense of achievement Amanda says: “Kitty, 8, has just reached purple belt and she has been made karate captain. She’s very proud, it’s tremendously good for her.”

5. For all the family When Patrick started tennis lessons, his parents were inspired to get active too. Mum Maria has joined a tennis club for adult group coaching, and daddy Mike cycles to and from Patrick’s lessons with him.

A small group of architects and curators slowly began to fill the empty shell of Hangar 17 at John F Kennedy International Airport with debris and material cleared from the site, transforming it into a storehouse of memories.
