1st March marks my first anniversary here at Families Sussex Coast magazine. What a year it has been! I have met some amazing people, reviewed some fantastic products and had the opportunity to explore what our fabulous county of Sussex has to offer. Admittedly, it has not been all smooth sailing, new careers never are, but I have reached the end of my first year smiling. This new issue of Families Sussex Coast is as always full of information for you and your family. There is a focus on education, languages, and a moving article on Autism, written by a fellow Families editor. Also, lots of Easter fun such as days out and crafts. I can’t ignore the fact that I am especially proud of the front cover as it features Jacob, my 3 year old son. We had a lovely afternoon photo shoot with Love Heart Photography at Goring Beach. Special Cruises on the Wey and Arun Canal
The Wey and Arun canal has two seasonal special cruises this spring for you and your family. Mothering Sunday Cruise is on 10th March. A ‘Coffee & Danish Pastry Cruise’ will depart at 11.00am and ‘Cream Tea Cruises’ will depart at 2.30pm & 4.30pm. Black tie service will enhance the treat for special Mums! The trips take 1½ hours Tickets cost £10 for adults and £7 for children. Booking in advance is essential.
Easter Cruises will be running on all four days of the Easter weekend from Good Friday, 29th March to Monday 1st April. The trips take 35 minutes and depart at 11.00am, 12.00, 2.00, 3.00 and 4.00pm. Children will receive a chocolate gift from the Easter Bunny while adults enjoy refreshments and the chance to unwind and enjoy the scenery. New footpath gets go-ahead!!
A new cycle path and footpath is to be built linking the village of Kingston to Lewes, starting at Spring Barn Farm leading up to the Stanley Turner playing fields.
The combination of hard work from many different parties (including Sustrans, local independent councillor Ruth O’Keef and Kingston & Cranedown Residents association to name but a few!) and the donation of land from Tom Carr, the farmer at Spring Barn Farm, means that this project now has the green light. This is great news for he local community and also for visitors to Spring Barn Farm, who will now have a much improved, much safer walk to and from Lewes, with only one road crossing now required at the farm park entrance with improved site lines. Good news for mums with buggies too! Work starts early March, well done to all those involved!

Easter Egg Potato Printing What you will need:
Large or small potato, (bigger potatoes are easier for smaller hands to hold) A few sheets of kitchen roll Paint brushes Paint pots or old plates, bowls Small sharp knife, (adult supervision for older children or adults only for young children) Paint, any colour Paper or card A cover for the table as it can get very messy!! Sequins, glitter glue, feathers, glitter, felt tips
Preparation:
If you are going to make a pattern in the potato it will make it easier if when you have cut it in half leave it face down on a few pieces of kitchen roll to dry it out. If you are just cutting it in half you do not need to do this. Cutting shapes into the potato: This is an adult job or for older children as long as you stay in charge of the actual cutting. You will need to draw a shape into the potato and cut around it, zig zags are most popular.
Applying the paint:
Add a small amount of paint into the paint pots or old plates etc. Either dip or paint the potatoes.
Printing:
Let the fun begin and stamp away! Next, decorate them with sequins, glitter glue, feathers etc.
Painting Ideas
You can print the potatoes onto folded card, this makes a great Easter card. You can also make a great mobile using an old wire coat hanger and some string to dangle the eggs from. Have fun and “Happy Easter from all at PlayMosaic”

Examples of these include Choca Holly organic chocolate from Hove and Baby Choes, handmade soft leather shoes made in Steyning. I allowed myself a bit of time to browse the shelves, and I was delighted by the fabulous range of gifts available. It is the ideal place to pick up a gift for a friend, a child’s birthday or for pocket money spends. My personal favourites included draw on table cloths, juggling balls, party bag service and handmade bags and soft toys. The delights of the Dotty Popsy Gift Shop don’t end there, far from it! Towards the back of the shop there is a small enclosed play area, ideal for keeping toddlers amused whilst you shop, and a hugely appealing café. The Youth University (YU) has, since 1999, been an established part of Davison High School’s Community programme, inspiring young people of all ages from different schools, backgrounds and abilities in the Worthing area and beyond. Courses are held on designated Saturday mornings, at October and February half terms, during the Easter holidays and our week long Summer School. YU offers a wide range of courses including: YU Masterchef, Artists, Designers, Adventurers, Investigators and Performers (for 8 -13 year olds) and for our younger students we run Young YU Clever Cooks and Crafty Kids (for 5 – 7 year olds). All our courses are delivered by qualified teachers employed by Davison, with access to Davison High School’s expertise and facilities. We try to offer activities that extend and complement the fantastic work that is being done in our local schools. Want to fire your clay work in a kiln? Or cook in our fully equipped kitchens? Or record your own music in our music technology suit? YU is the placeto try and extend your learning whilst making new friends. A unique feature of YU is our Volunteer Leaders, KS4 students at Davison, who assist the staff and students at YU. According to a report in recent article in The Independent newspaper, people who speak a foreign language earn more money and find it easier to get a job. Because little children’s brains are like sponges, they can soak up reams of new words and phrases at a time, leaving us oldies far behind. What’s more, because their ears can pick up sounds better, their foreign accents are really impressive. Research from Edinburgh University shows that children who speak 2 languages are better at learning a wide range of subjects at school and that bringing children up bilingually ‘can give them more than two languages’. One of the main yet surprising benefits is a health one: recent coverage in several national papers has highlighted research from Canada, where they’ve found that if you start learning a language at a young age you can delay dementia or Alzheimer’s by at least 5 years – something to do with storing languages in different parts of the brain and making it more ‘plastic’.

Some of the top universities only accept applications from people who speak a language and employers are increasingly using languages to filter applicants. These are sobering facts, but what is great to know, is that languages are so easy if you start early. But, paradoxically, the majority of parents and carers understand its importance to their children’s future success and want their children achieve in it. So what can you do at home to help give your child a great start to become a confident mathematcians?

Use measuring language in your everyday activities –
heavy, light, long, short, wide, narrow etc. Notice when a car drives past really fast, sing about days of the week, months of the year, play ‘what’s the time Mr Wolf’ take some money into a sweet shop to see what you can buy with 20p.
Maths is all around us and often we don’t even realise it. Just try to tune into it and talk about it positively. Remember it helps children to understand their world better – it’s not something to be scared of! As a parent we find that the decisions we make for our child in terms of their schooling are vitally important. No parent would like to feel that they have not given their child the best start in life, so I would like to share with you the choice I made when it came to choosing a pre-school setting for each of my children. I have chosen a Montessori Pre-School, and many of my friends have asked me why I rate the Montessori Ethos so highly. Claire Morgan from the New Montessori Pre-School in Worthing has written this piece to share with you why the Montessori way is so highly regarded worldwide. If we want a future that is more thoughtful, more compassionate and more peaceful it has to begin with a character forming education that teaches and models these dispositions and recognises that education needs to go beyond filling the child with mere content knowledge but rather cultivates a child’s own natural desire to learn. The future lies in the little hands of the adults of tomorrow and they will need to be fully equipped with essential life skills that will enable them to think for themselves, to be self-initiating, self-directing and self-modifying. Society further recognises a growing need for citizens who value truth, openness, interdependence and who can learn and change consciously, continuously searching for creative solutions. A child’s work is to create the person they will become so an education that prepares them for life – encouraging to think, feel and communicate with others is necessary. The Department for Children, Schools and Families and Ofsted recognise Montessori readily meets the Early Learning Goals and its approach to learning has been hailed as underpinning the philosophy of the Early Years Foundation Stage. The principles underlying the EYFS are ones that are very familiar to Montessorians - that every child is unique, that children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships, that they learn and develop best in enabling and favourable environments and that they develop and learn in different ways. Dr Montessori in her wisdom, identified these over 100 years ago.
When asked to describe Montessori even the most seasoned of a Montessorian, a parent with her third child going through a Montessori education, or even a fresh newly inspired student of The Montessori Method may struggle to express and portray what IS Montessori. Words alone cannot portray what happens in a Montessori learning environment. It’s theory, principles, didactic materials and methodology alone cannot be understood fully unless it is witnessed and felt. Do take the time to step inside a thought-filled Montessori classroom and observe with wonder and fascination how children, born with special mental powers that aid in the work of their own construction, are capable of so much when given an environment that reflects a commitment to quality, freedom, structure and order, beauty and aesthetically pleasing and encourages the development of community life. This environment is further supported by warm, understanding and observant adults that support each child and their individual accomplishments. There are many things about Montessori that can transform an early years setting from being mediocre into a being a masterpiece.

Politics is putting education in danger Michael Bassey is an emeritus professor of education of Nottingham Trent University and former president of the British Educational Research Association. Schools are very different from thirty years ago, teachers and children work much harder and the expectations on them are high. Government has put more money into education and schools are better equipped. But the price is that politicians not teachers control schools. Secretary of state for education Michael Gove came into office in 2010 and as well as cutting budgets his aim was to raise standards. To this end he is taking schools away from the local authorities, calling them academies and giving them monies that the councils would have used for support of schools. How renaming schools will improve education is not clear. Mr Gove has also introduced another national curriculum for primary schools in order ‘to restore rigour’. Three of four academic advisers resigned when it was published, one saying it ‘is too narrowly prescriptive for the real world of classrooms’. Now he is abolishing GCSE and introducing baccalaureate examinations that will exclude all of the creative disciplines. I want to alert parents to some of the dangers that lie ahead for their children. I believe passionately that school education should be funded by the state and that decisions about how it is conducted should be in the hands of teachers. Teachers are the professionals who by experience, commitment and training understand best the educational needs of children.
Danger 1: The goalposts have been moved.
Without warning, in July 2012 the boundary between C and D in English GCSE was raised. As a result thousands of candidates had their hopes for higher education dashed. The move was a reaction to fears that standards were slipping as too many people were gaining good grades. Many students lives were affected by these results.
Danger 2: Unemployment looms. The school leaving age was raised from 16 to 18, but what future awaits youngsters at 18 in a country that does not seem to value apprenticeship schemes?
Danger 3: Children are over-tested, year after year.
Some children take exams in their stride but others find them very stressful. Examinations start at six with a test on phonics. At seven and 11 there are key stage tests in literacy and numeracy, at 15 GCSEs. Because of published league tables there is great pressure on schools to achieve resulting in ‘teaching to the test’.

Danger 4: School sports fields are being sold. Last summer, 30 playing fields were approved for sale. This seems incredible at a time when Olympic successes inspired many young athletes.
Danger 5: Too many children are weak readers. Mr Gove’s insistance on young children learning to ‘decode’ writing by synthetic phonics is utterly misguided, say many teachers. Experts say it should be one of several methods used in a balanced approach to reading.
Danger 6: ‘Raising standards’ weakens all-round education.
The major political parties claim they want to ‘raise standards’, but only in terms of examination results. Yes, good results are important, but they are not everything. All-round education is about learning cognitive skills, developing worthwhile values, learning how to relate emotionally, learning how to communicate effectively, creative talents, experiencing our heritage, and ultimately, learning how to make a living.All-round education embraces every aspect of learning how to lead worthwhile lives. Most of this cannot be tested in examinations.
What can be done? If you find yourself worried about these issues then exercise your democratic right to contact your MP. Go to www.writetothem.com and send a message. You might want to suggest a major enquiry into state education that asks what worthwhile all-round education should look like in the 21st century.

What to Do if Your Child is

When I became pregnant, I felt like I’d stepped through the looking glass. I’d been focusing on my career and never paid too much attention to family life, but suddenly it was everywhere, and I’d unwittingly joined a new club. There were new rules, and I was playing catch-up, but I soon began to feel at home in this warm, welcoming world of bumps and babies. But when my child’s behaviour started to go off the rails, at just 18 months, it stretched the welcome of my new world to the limit. I was forced, eventually, to step through another looking glass – into the world of Special Educational Needs (SEN). I decided to write this article to help other parents to access the services they may need right at the start of their SEN journey. Every child is different and will need their own, personal help, so one solution doesn’t fit all. But the SEN system can be a maze, and finding the right people and organisations to help you through it is all-important. I hope that if you’re struggling with the fact that your child seems different from his or her peers, you’ll find something on these pages that will help.
My top tips:
Get reading
Once you have received a diagnosis – or even before – read up on the problem, or what you think it is. I have amassed quite a library on Attachment Disorder, Autism, Asperger Syndrome, ADHD, inflexible children and special diets! Be aware, though, that it’s all too easy to misdiagnose your child from a book or the internet – many symptoms overlap different diagnoses, and some behavioural problems actually have their roots in physical or emotional difficulties. For instance, a child who is dyslexic might act badly through frustration, or a child with hearing problems might switch off in class because they can’t hear the teacher. It’s important to see the professionals to get a proper diagnosis.
Reach out and make connections
Join a support group, even before diagnosis. This might be controversial, but having a child with an SEN can be isolating, and meeting others in a similar situation – whatever their children’s difficulties – can help you feel less alone. It’s also true that there is help out there that can’t normally be accessed before diagnosis, and you can find out about it at these groups.

See your doctor
Your first port of call is your GP. If you feel something is wrong, you don’t need to wait for the nursery or school to tell you (although they will, if they feel your child is struggling). Depending on your child’s symptoms, your GP can refer you to CAMHS (the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service –the county’s child psychologists), a Speech and Language therapist or a paediatrician. If you’re referred to CAMHS, ask as soon as possible about the length of the waiting list, as it can be very long (my son was waiting 16 months to be assessed).
Sandy Row, a mother of four adopted children with autism, has written a book called The Velvet Bulldozer about her determined battle with the authorities to get her children properly diagnosed and supported. If you feel you’re not getting appropriate support, don’t just give up – sometimes you have to fight for the best for your child.
Don’t be ashamed
Your child’s disability is not your fault, you didn’t ask for it and beating yourself up about it won’t help anyone. It’s natural to feel sad that your high-flying dreams for your child might not now come true, but he/she is still your child and needs you. Think positive.
Keep talking to your child’s school/nursery
If your child is at nursery or school, liaise with the nursery manager or head teacher about your child’s progress and behaviour, and keep them informed of any changes outside school / nursery. This can help to build up a full picture of the child’s environment, which might shed some light on the problem. Don’t get defensive – they will be trying to help you and your child, not judging you.
