Families News Our Lady of Muswell Primary School contribute to The Parliamentary Review Our Lady of Muswell Primary School was delighted to be invited to be part of The Education Parliamentary Review. The Parliamentary Review outlines areas of excellence and relevant issues for teachers, communities and policymakers alike. These will be featured alongside commentary on the sector from former education secretary and Review chairman Lord Blunkett. The OLM review takes the reader with them on their five year journey to Outstanding; Our Lady of Muswell is a twoform entry school in Muswell Hill and in their most recent Ofsted inspection, (November 2017) they were graded as “Outstanding”. As one parent stated “It is a supportive school which welcomes children regardless of their faith, abilities and origins. This is what an outstanding school should be.” The school’s results from Early Years to Year 6 are consistently above the National Averages and children make very good progress at the school. Talking to young children about War this Remembrance Day Remembrance Day this year will be on Sunday 11 November and will be especially significant as it will mark 100 years since the original agreement to end fighting during the First World War in 1918, also known as Armistice Day. There will be a great deal of media coverage given to this significant commemoration and your child may be prompted to ask you questions. Discussing war with children can be quite difficult. Recognising this, CBeebies has produced a short animation, simply titled ‘Poppies’ to help convey the notion of remembrance in a way that resonates with a young audience. It is a really beautiful piece to watch and would be a great way to introduce any discussion of Remembrance Day. The 2 minute film follows a bunny who starts off playing in a meadow, which then becomes a WW1 battlefield. The film can be viewed at www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies

Education New Reception Test Criticised Children who start Reception in September 2020 will be the first group to take the new Reception test; a baseline measure to track pupils’ progress during primary school. It is proposed that it will take place during the first 6 weeks of the autumn term. Guidelines recently released by the government say the new reception baseline assessment will be short (about 20 minutes), interactive and practical. It will cover language and communication, early mathematics and social and behavioural skills. However, the proposed test has been criticised in a report written by an expert panel and published by the British Education Research Association. The report’s authors say that the assessment is highly likely to produce unreliable and invalid results, as it fails to recognise that young children develop at different paces and doesn’t adjust for key factors, such as differences in ages and family background. Add to this the fact that teachers and practitioners are likely to become increasingly pressured to ‘teach to the test’, and it is difficult to see how baseline results will have any real value. Odd Socks Day for Anti-Bullying Week
Anti-Bullying Week runs from 12 to 16 November 2018 and the theme this year is choosing respect over bullying. The aim of the week is to support schools to help children understand: • The definition of respect • That bullying is a behavioural choice • That we can respectfully disagree with each other i.e. we don’t have to be best friends or always agree with each other but we do have to show each other respect • That we all need to choose to respect each other, both face to face and online Students are being encouraged to wear odd socks to school on Monday 12 November to show their support and raise money for a good cause. Education What is a Talking School? The ‘Talking School’ is one which prioritises the importance of talking and listening as a means of thinking and learning and as a way of developing collaborative and cooperative skills. Within a Talking School, the children’s voice is at the centre all teaching and learning which enables the children to learn to trust the value of their instincts and opinions. They grow in courage and confidence, and are able to verbalise complex thoughts and feelings when they are met with an attitude of respect and authentic interest. At St Anthony’s School for Girls, all the teaching staff and the head teacher model this approach in all teaching and learning. They create safe non-judgemental listening spaces using ‘Talking Points’, ’Talking Assemblies,’ Talk Partners’ and Critical thinking sessions where children believe that what they say truly matters. The girls respond eagerly to ‘Talk Points’ such as: ‘What does it mean to be kind?’ ‘Which of our senses is most important?’ Who is the most important person in the school?’ The girls are given licence to discuss and debate with ease, their responses are received with respect and they sense that pupil voice is at the heart of the school environment. Compulsory Relationship and Sex Education Relationship and health education will become compulsory for school children from September 2020, the Government has announced. Under the proposals, all pupils will study compulsory health education and new reformed relationship education in primary school, as well as and relationship and sex education in secondary school. Teachers will talk to primary school pupils in an age appropriate way about the features of healthy friendships, family relationships and other relationships they are likely to encounter. At secondary school, teachers will build on the foundation of relationships education in primary school and, at the appropriate time, extend teaching to include intimate relationships as well. At both primary and secondary, pupils will learn about staying safe online and how to use technology safely, responsibly and respectfully. Classes will also cover physical health, such as the importance of exercise and healthy eating, as well as the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and how it contributes towards the prevention of health problems. Why you should take your children to the Theatre this Christmas! The Magic of a Classic Tale
It’s great for kids to see their favourite fairy tale or classic story brought to life on stage and this can be a magical introduction to the theatre. “Run, run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me I’m the gingerbread man!” The Ginger Bread Man at Jackson Lane (N6) promises plenty of such magic, adding scrumptious original songs, tasty story-telling and dollops of delight, to a brand new version of the classic tale! Julia Donaldson and Alex Scheffler’s award-winning sequel, The Gruffalo’s Child, is a familiar story brought to life at the Arts Depot (N4) this Christmas, in a musical adaption which involves lots of audience interaction!

Think back to your childhood? I’m sure you remember going to see a panto at least once. Panto can be fascinating for children as the slapstick elements are very visual and the repetitiveness of the jokes and audience interaction really gets them involved. Treatment
Varicose vein treatment has come a long way in the past 15 years with new understanding of the underlying causes, development of new treatment techniques using cutting edge technology and the successful introduction of these into regular medical practice. Treatment used to be surgical under general anaesthetic with cutting at the groins to tear out (“strip”) affected veins. It was found to be painful, with a 6 weeks recovery period and a high rate of recurrence (up to 40% at 5 years). Women were advised to “wait until their child-bearing years were over”. Endovenous Laser Ablation (“EVLA”) appeared in the early 2000s by combining developments in ultrasound imaging and medical laser therapy. EVLA is a Daycase procedure under local anaesthetic. A thin laser fibre (600microns wide) is injected just below the knee and the heat of the laser fibre tip then shrinks the varicose vein causing it close irreversibly. The patient walks
