News & Views Families Needed! Scientists and pollinators want your help Imagine living in a desert with barely any food, hardly any water or any place to shelter. Unfortunately, this is exactly what it is like for the pollinating insects currently living in Britain. Loss of habitat, pesticides, and farming practices have left these insects hungry and homeless, suffering from a lack of feeding, nesting and shelter habitat. Which is why the Polli:Nation project needs your help. Now in its second year, the Polli:Nation survey is looking for families across the UK to take part in aiding research on the health and status of pollinating insects across the UK. The survey can be completed in under an hour in outdoor spaces such as gardens, school grounds, or local parks, and uploading your findings will contribute to important scientific research. The survey will also help you to consider whether your area is a good environment for pollinators, offering guidance on how you can create simple feeding and nesting habitats. So get out there now, become a citizen scientist and help the pollinators in your community. Free survey resources can be downloaded at www.opalexplorenature.org/polli-nation.

Foraging Feast for Surrey Families Foraging is the best way to teach our children where our food comes from. It also offers hours of sunshine filled fun, and thanks to the Woodlands Trust and Sainsbury’s hundreds of thousands of trees are being planted in the Woodlands Trust Langley Vale site, which is just a stone throw away from Epsom racecourse, creating The “Sainsbury’s Community Orchard” which will allow visitors to get involved with pruning and maintaining the orchard and also to enjoy the harvesting of the fruits. The two year old trees, currently just a metre or two high, will eventually mature and produce provide a rich harvest of fruit for visitors, walkers and locals alike to forage on. Dig in to help grow Sutton Community Farm - Together we can build a barn that will give us the space we need to flourish. Sutton Community Farm is a special place where the local community works together to grow and deliver fresh, healthy vegetables in Sutton and surrounds. They also host school groups to learn about where food comes from and about the lifecycles of plants, food chains, soil life and about insects and pollinators. It’s an exciting experience for city children to be involved in a working farm that produces real food. This amazing local community initiative needs a barn for storing, packing and weighing which will enable them to grow and expand, and they need your help to build it! The share offer will raise money for a new barn that will accommodate the VegBox needs giving more families locally grown and produced vegetables • Families will also benefit as a barn will allow the Sutton Community Farm to host more school groups and provide dedicated space for educational activities and families will be able to get muddy and dirty together. ‘’Our work with schools has become very popular and we’re receiving more and more requests to host groups.’’, says Charlotte Steel, General Manager, Sutton Community Farm. “We are not asking for a donation, we are asking for an investment in the farm. Local people can become a Member, feel a part of the community and have a say in how things are run. We’re delighted that the funder Power to Change will match every £1 invested by you, so your money will go even further ‘ Invest today www.crowdfunder.co.uk/sutton-community-farm-shares

A new face at Jo Jingles Sutton I’m Lorraine Bryant and I have made the exciting decision to take over Jo Jingles Sutton, Banstead and Purley. Over the last few years I have worked hard to achieve a degree in teaching and learning, whilst working as a deputy manager of a preschool and then onto a local Primary school, I worked with many different ages but my heart is with the little ones; I love watching their faces light up when they do something new. I have two children of my own; when they were younger I took them to weekly music and movement sessions, I realised quickly that it was more than just singing; it was fun but their early knowledge of numbers, colours and animal names was definitely down to those songs and classes and for me it was a great social platform to meet other mummies. We loved it! For more information visit www.jojingles.com/sutton-and-banstead

SnappyTag - easy as 1,2,3 My nickname is Lastminute.com Mum in my son’s playground. There are so many little jobs that need doing that my ‘to do’ list is constantly growing and the ‘clothes labelling’ task was always being shifted down the priority scale and it eventually dropped off my list altogether! When Snappy Tag asked if I would like to try out their labelling system I decided to give it a go.

Banstead Prep, SM7 3RA 01737 363601 Sat 20 May from 10am to 11am

Armed with a new school uniform, my tags and the Snappy Tag applicator I set to work… and soon discovered much to my great delight that the SnappyTag solution was so easy I would still never have to name a school item again, as my son proved to be fully capable to operate this little gem himself. After read the instructions through together off he went: push, snap, clicked on. It is really as easy as 1,2,3.

Top Tips for choosing a good 11+ Mock Test provider •

•

•

Is the company an established mock test provider? Are they experienced enough to provide quality questions? Do they provide comprehensive detailed feedback? A good mock test provider will give you ranked results, a report of your child’s strengths and weaknesses and access to the mock test questions and answers. Have they been recommended by anyone? If not, look for testimonials on their website or other online platforms.

•

How quickly will the results be sent to you? You will need this as quickly as possible to help your child. A month later could render the experience obsolete.

•

What are you are getting for the mock test fee? Does the fee include feedback reports and access to questions. Compare carefully and don’t necessarily go by the price alone.

•

Do your research, your child only has one chance!

England’s largest outdoor learning project reveals children more motivated to learn when outside Children from 125 schools across the South West of England are happier, healthier and more motivated to learn thanks to a new project commissioned by Natural England that has turned the outdoors into a classroom and helped schools transform ways of teaching. The project is the largest project of its kind in England and has helped more than 40,000 primary and secondary school pupils get out of their classrooms and into the outdoors – whether that’s a maths lesson in a local park or drama out on the school field. For the first time, the Natural Connections project provides strong evidence that learning outdoors has multiple benefits for school children. 92 per cent of teachers surveyed said that pupils were more engaged with learning when outdoors and 85 per cent saw a positive impact on their behaviour. The project has found taking lessons outside can help motivate teachers. Almost 70 per cent of teachers said that outdoor learning has had a positive impact on their job satisfaction and 72 per cent reported improved health and wellbeing. Natural England is now working with partners to help share the findings from this project to support and enhance the provision of outdoor learning in schools across England. The Arts -

Kingston International Youth Arts Festival

The confidence to perform in Life London National Ballet School

The UK’s biggest multi-arts comes to town -The Kingston’s International Youth Arts Festival With the school curriculum leaving increasingly less time for creativity, children and young people are getting fewer opportunities to enjoy and express themselves through the arts. Some children just love to dance and others grab anything that makes a colourful mark as soon as they can control their hand movements.

Over the last nine years Kingston’s International Youth Arts Festival has provided creative performing, learning and volunteering opportunities for 25,000 children and young people

Multi-arts festival

“Not every child who plays football wants to become a professional, and the same can be said for young people who join a drama, dance or music group. There is so much joy to be found in these activities without them being end-goal career aspirations and the life skills learnt from these experiences are hugely beneficial; being able to work with others, to work independently, and for the young person to be confident in their own ideas.”

These are simple pleasures but the value of the arts can have a much more profound effect on children and young people, and many believe it is something that everyone should be able to experience. The Arts is a general term that can include formal education in subjects such as music-making, drama, photography and design, to hands-on creativity like modeling clay, printing with potatoes or even reading a book. Psychologists believe that these activities stimulate parts of the brain that can lead to improved emotional wellbeing and selfesteem. For a full list of classes in your area please visit your local families web page, and don’t forget to like their associated Facebook pages www.familiesonline. co.uk and search for your local page by post code.

Festival director Andy Currums feels passionately about the positive impact of the arts,

TV presenter Michael Underwood is patron of Creative Youth - the charity that delivers the festival added: “It’s not about giving children the confidence to get up on stage and dance around, it’s about giving them the confidence to perform in life.” Children, young people and families can enjoy around 200 events and activities at this year’s International Youth Arts Festival from 7th-16th July in Kingston upon Thames. For information and tickets visit iyafestival.org.uk or facebook.com/ iyafestival. Subsidised ticket prices and free staff places are available for school/youth groups of 10+.
