Imagine festival of the arts 2016 Sutton Theatres Trust goes into administration A very sad time for the people of Sutton as the Sutton Theatres Trust, which took over the running of the Secombe Theatre and The Cryer in 2015, went into administration in August. Although audience numbers have doubled since the Trust took over in 2015, numbers were too low to keep the theatres running. As a result, four staff have been made redundant, and all scheduled shows have been cancelled as of immediate effect. A buyer for the trust – which is in fact a company, not a charitable trust – is now being sought from administrators.
Sutton Council’s Imagine Festival of the Arts is back for 2016 and events this year are inspired by famous author H.G. Wells, who lived in Worcester Park – think sci-fi, space exploration, and War of the Worlds as Sutton’s creatives take centre stage. Between 15 – 30 October 2016 the borough will play host to the BrickBox time-travel disco, a new sound installation from Output Arts, and Pint of Science’s boundary-pushing merging of art and science among many, many other great events – and the best part is that each one is completely free to attend. Dance like everyone’s watching - How kids can bond through movement
If you’ve met a special person at a disco, you’ll know that copying another dancer’s moves can create an instant bond. There may be more to this than at first appears. Researchers at Oxford University have discovered that problems and differences between children in a group can be solved by encouraging them to dance together in a similar way. The academics taught 100 seven to 12-yearolds a few dance moves, divided them into groups and asked each group to dance for the others. They found that the children who danced in a similar way to each other felt closer and had more in common with each other. Those who danced in a different way felt no bond. The kids were questioned about their feelings for the others before and after the experiment. They found that, while they felt closer to their own group before they danced, they felt closer to those that danced the same way afterwards. Surprisingly, they did not feel close to children who danced with different moves or to a different beat. The study’s lead, Bahar Tuncgenc, a PHD student at Oxford’s Institute of Cognitive and Evolutionary Anthropology, said: “Throughout our lives, we find that there are groups we identify with and those we feel distinctly cool or even negative towards. These feelings determine our attitudes and strongly influence how we socialise.

For the sixth year in a row, Croydonbased performing arts school The BRIT School has been selected to perform at the biggest national youth dance celebration in the UK
The school’s all-male dance company Khronos was founded in 2009 and is made up of 21 talented dancers aged between 12 and 21 years old. They are the only all-male troupe to secure a place on the Royal Albert Hall stage this year. Greenacre School receive a £2000 grant form Toyota Fund for a Better Tomorrow to re-landscape their existing Ecological Garden Greenacre School is thrilled to have been awarded a £2000 grant from the Toyota Fund for a Better Tomorrow to re-landscape our existing Ecological Garden and to launch a Sensory Garden for all our girls to use to coincide with National Biology Week (8-16 October 2016) the theme of which is Conservation and Endangered Species. ‘’We will provide seating, bug houses and plants to increase biodiversity, and develop a sensory corner which will allow young children opportunities to investigate and “touch” within a safe environment. ‘’ ‘’We also plan to install a bird box in the garden with a webcam and link it to the internet and our School “Twitter” account, with a live feed for our very own “Springwatch”, making the garden a feature that only the school but also our local community can enjoy. Birds such as swifts are in decline and helping them by providing suitable nesting sites will enable us to contribute to their conservation. ‘’

Ewell Castle School Celebrates Fantastic A Level Results and Individual Success Stories It is another successful year for Ewell Castle School, with over 60% of our students leaving for Higher Education gaining places at their first choice universities at this stage, with some universities yet to make a decision. Nearly 15% of exams taken gained the top grades of A* - A, with almost two thirds of grades being A* - C. Notable performances include Jacob Malpas who achieved an A*, two A grades and a B grade at AS. 10 tips to get the most out of school open days Choosing the right school is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your child and open days are your best chance to get a first-hand view. Here are ten things you should keep in mind…
1. Do your homework beforehand
Read the Ofsted report and see what has been highlighted as the strengths and weaknesses of the school; this will give you an idea of what to look out for. Ponder your priorities for your child’s schooling too: perhaps you favour a nurturing place with strong pastoral care, a highly academic and competitive environment, or masses of extracurricular opportunities?
2. On the day, talk to and observe pupils
Are they the kind of kids you’d like yours hanging out with? Do you think your child would fit in well? Many schools have pupil-led open day tours; so feel free to ask them questions, although be forgiving if they don’t know the answers to aspects of the school beyond their experience, such as the latest ‘A’ level results or details of school policies on communication with parents. General questions such as ‘what do you like the most and the least about the school?’ can be telling.
3. Chat with teachers too
Do they seem sparky and enthused about their work? What are their favourite things about teaching there and what do they think the challenges are? When they talk do they focus on the achievements of top performing children or all of them? Have they been there long? If many of the staff you speak to are new, this can suggest high turnover levels, which can be unsettling for pupils.
4. Look at what sort of extra-curricular activities are on offer
Do they match your child’s interests and talents? What are the facilities like for the hobbies your child has: if they’re musical is there a dedicated music classroom or building? If they’re a dab hand at sport, are there decent pitches/ courts/ a pool on site? How are teams and orchestra/ drama places selected – is it fairly inclusive, or do only the very talented get to participate?
5. Head to the head’s speech
There will normally be a talk from the headteacher. Listen to what they have to say about their ethos and vision – does it match what you want for your child for the next seven years?
6. Check out the state of the buildings and facilities
Not all schools can have shiny new, impressive facilities but is what’s there well-kept and reasonably clean, or marred by litter and graffiti? It sounds silly but check out the loos; they’re the most likely place to be neglected, in terms of pupil behaviour and upkeep, on the open day.
7. Look at staff/ pupil interactions
Do the teachers, and especially the head, seem to know most of the pupils? Is there warmth but respect to their interactions, or do the children seem almost fearful of him or her? Are teachers having to bellow at the kids to keep order or do they have a calm but in-control air?
8. Ask about parent/ school communication
Find out how much parental involvement is welcomed by the school and how regular reports and parents’ evenings are. Is there a newsletter and how active is the Parent Teacher Association?
9. Consider your general impressions
Did the school feel buzzy and an engaging place to learn? Or lacking a sense of purpose and direction? Did pupils seem excited to be there and staff proud of them and the school in general?
10. Bear in mind that at open days there is something of a performance going on
This is often the glossy version of a school, so some parents find it useful to make a return visit on a normal school day, where possible.

What’s the Trick All About?
The word “trick” refers to the “threat” to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given. These days it is uncommon to have raw egg splattered over your driveway by pranksters, but it’s safest not to answer the door to raucous groups of older teenagers, or if you suspect your visitors are not well-intentioned. If you are asked for a “trick,” what should you do? As the Diwali Festival of Light and Bonfire Night fast approaches and with all the excitement of rockets and Catherine wheels among adults and kids alike, it can be easy to overlook the potential dangers of bonfire and firework celebrations.
Tips for choosing your fireworks
Did you know: Fireworks can travel at speeds of 150 mph, the cruising speed of some biplanes. Make sure the fireworks you buy are meant for home use, are suitable for the size of your garden and are marked with British Standard number (BS 7114).
You should also:
Store fireworks in a metal box with a lid during the display Use a taper for lighting fireworks Have a bucket of water close to hand and a bucket or other container of soft earth to stick fireworks in Use a board or other non-flammable rigid surface for flat-bottomed fireworks Use supports or launches for Catherine wheels or rockets
