News & Views Anti-Bullying Workshop visits schools across the UK This November Anti-Bullying Workshop will be busy visiting schools across the UK to deliver their unique drama role-play workshops. Director Faye Willingale says, “We really enjoy going into schools to deliver our antibullying message in a fun and creative way. This year’s anti-bullying week is under the banner “Make a Noise About Bullying”. We have designed a new workshop for this year’s theme to give children the confidence to report bullying if they feel it is happening to them or one of their friends. We provide teachers with pre-workshop exercises and follow-up lesson plans to continue the work in class after our visit. There is a lot of focus on anti-bullying during November but unfortunately we know that tackling bullying remains a challenge the whole year”. This year’s anti-bullying week in schools is from Monday 16th November to Friday 20th November. Barnardo’s Change a Life Campaign Children across Surrey may find themselves in care because their parent is sick, or they may have experienced abuse or neglect – whatever the reason, they are going through really tough times and need love, stability and support. Barnardo’s is reaching out to would-be carers who want to provide homes for older children, siblings, and disabled children. These youngsters often find it more difficult to find homes, increasing the chances they’ll be moved around or in the case of siblings, tragically, split up. Single or in a couple, black or white, same-sex or heterosexual; we are asking Surrey’s would-be carers to come forward and help change a child’s life. Shapes Day Nursery coming to Epsom Independently-owned Shapes Day Nursery, is expanding, with a second nursery opening in West Street, near Epsom town centre and train station. All Babies to be Protected Against Meningitis A new vaccine to protect babies against meningitis B has been introduced for all childhood vaccinations for babies aged two, four and 24 months. Since September 2015, all babes will routinely be given the meningitis vaccine at their regular vaccination appointments. The scheme was delayed by cost disputes but is now the first national, publically funded programme against this deadly infection in the world. It should protect babies and children against 90% of meningococcal group B bacteria. This can affect babies under the age of one and can be caught up to around the age of five years. If left untreated, it can cause damage to the brain and cause blood poisoning. It can also kill. The Men ACWY vaccine will also be offered to all 17 and 18 year olds who are starting university this year.

In September, Alison Storey took on the mantle. Croydon High Junior School girls show their support for the new 5p a bag law, revealing the school’s new ‘bags for life’ as the way forward for discerning shoppers When you learn that, on average, it takes 1000 years for a plastic bag to decompose and that last year 7.6 billion (or 140 bags per person) were handed out in the UK, it just makes sense for us all to do our bit, it is of course the youngest in our communities who will be affected most by the long term effects of our disposable lifestyle and today. At Croydon High, the girls run a whole school Eco-committee, looking at ways in which they can play their part in local and global eco issues and a NOAH club, which promotes issues surrounded endangered species. The school have now also produced their own ‘bags for life’ in the week that the 5p charge for plastic bags has been introduced. Visitors to the school’s October Open Day all went away with one of the new bags, and they are also proving a hit with the girls! Abbotsbury Primary School inspire scientists of the future Sharo Rostem, a year 5 pupils, from Abbotsbury Primary School in Morden had the amazing pleasure of sharing an out of this world experience with her classmates as they made a ‘Face time link’ with NASA’s an astrophysicist Dr. Karwan Rostem, who happens to be her uncle. Dr Rostem and a colleague discussed some of the exiting things that an astrophysicist gets to do, some of which involves using telescopes with a wide range of lenses to look at the universe as well as talking about an instrument they are designing to record the cosmic sounds made by the big bang. Headteacher of Abbotsbury Primary, Ro Maybury, said: This is part of our exciting creative curriculum and our way of inspiring scientists of the future.”

Jamie’s Sugar Rush Inspires Sugar Cuts Jamie Oliver’s groundbreaking TV programme Sugar Rush, which explored the relationship between obesity in kids and the hidden sugars in everyday foods, has led to many city councils calling for a ‘sugar tax’. Brighton and Hove council is introducing a 10p surcharge on sugary soft drinks and is putting the proceeds towards a children’s health and food education trust. They are also supporting the introduction of healthy vending machines in schools and food education classes in primary school classrooms. The council is responding, like many other bodies across the UK, to the celebrity chef’s investigations into the quantities of sugar hidden in food. England has one of the highest rates of childhood obesity in Europe and teenagers may be eating up to three times the recommended sugar intake every day. Jamie Oliver has also introduced a sugar tax in his restaurants and the proceeds are going towards the Children’s Health Fund.

Shortage of Teachers a “Crisis” A Head Teacher has warned that a shortage of teachers and a rising number of pupils will create “a perfect storm” for English schools. Allan Foulds of Cheltenham Bournside School has said at the Conservative Party conference that the school system is near breaking point. Mr. Foulds is president of the Association of School and College Leaders, which says that there are too few teachers currently going through training to be able to meet the numbers needed. A fall in the birth rate back in the late 1990s led to fewer 21 year olds becoming graduates now and this is now being felt in the lack of graduates available and choosing to go into teaching. At the same time, the number of pupils is increasing, with the numbers of school children under 16 set to rise to a peak of 7.85 million by 2020.

Are we over-testing our children? By Carey Ann Dodah The UK’s education system has traditionally been far less test-centric than its counterparts in countries such as the USA, where last year saw children actively boycotting and protesting against the test-culture. In the USA, children are tested annually and these tests dictate whether they progress into the next year or are held back. Children feel a lot of pressure to do well. Parents want them to do well, but feel simultaneously concerned and disappointed at the way in which creative and life-skills can be side-lined in their children’s academic lives. In the UK, the move towards the new curriculum and introduction of new assessments such as the the Baseline Assessment tests, Phonics Screening check, and KS2 SATS including the new SPAG test, are disturbing many parents, who are concerned that too much emphasis is being placed on teaching children to pass tests. So what exactly are these tests? The Baseline Test 1:1 formal test that will take place within a few weeks of a child starting school. It focusses on a child’s literacy and numeracy to generate a ‘baseline’ against which to measure progress to Key Stage One and Two. The baseline test has received a lot of criticism. However, if delivered in the right way, a child will not be aware of being assessed and the results will provide valuable data that teachers can use to track a child’s progress. Looking at the rate of progress each child is making is really positive, as every child is different and learns at a different pace. The test will enable teachers to be recognised for the difference they are making to each individual pupil, rather than getting a whole cohort to one level. The Phonics Screening Check Taken by pupils in Year 1, this test is designed to confirm whether pupils have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard. It will identify pupils who need extra help to improve their decoding skills.

The check consists of 20 real words and 20 pseudo-words that a pupil reads aloud to the teacher. Pupils must also take the check in Year 2 if they didn’t meet the required standard in Year 1 or haven’t taken it before. KS2 SATS National Curriculum tests which are taken by pupils at age 11 at the end of Key Stage 2. Tests include: The SPAG Test An English grammar, punctuation and spelling test which assesses a child’s English skills in four key areas: spelling, punctuation, grammar, and vocabulary. There is an English Reading Test that is based on reading comprehension of three texts, with a total of 35 to 40 questions of increasing difficulty. Three Written Maths Tests and a Mental Maths Test The new KS2 SATS will initially see pupils and schools judged on test results, as there is no historical data to evaluate progress for each individual pupil. So the tests will be tough and those sitting them in May 2016 are going to be challenged with material that would previously have been expected of children a year or two older. With this amount of extra material

to learn, it’s natural that schools will feel the need to tailor their focus to the test. The new curriculum set out to provide a creative, collaborative experience for children in both maths and English but the KS2 SATS tests focus on the mechanics of maths and English and don’t include any creative problem solving activities in maths or any opportunities for children to demonstrate their skills in creative writing. The danger here is that the narrowness of the tests could flow into a narrow focus of learning during lessons. Despite the increase in testing children in the UK, I remain positive that a test-culture like that of the USA will be avoided. It’s vital that the UK education system maintains a balance between creating a love of learning in children and nurturing their creative talents and passions, whilst simultaneously teaching them in a way that enables them to pass tests. The majority of teachers feel similarly and we need to trust in the intention they have to preserve this balance for our children.

Create your own Winter Wonderland with Ice lanterns

Fill a balloon with water. For rounded top ensure all of the air is out of the balloon and for a flat top blow a puff of air into the balloon before closing it. Freeze either outside or in a freezer. After 12 hours, check the balloon. When the ice is the thickness you want, drain the water from the centre by creating a hole in the weakest layer of ice, normally at the bottom of the lantern. The hole needs to be large enough to slip over the candle. On the other side make a chimney for air flow with the heat from the candle, make sure to prop so the candle can breathe until a chimney is melted through. Handy Tip: Alternatively you can use a small screw driver to make the chimney and use LED lights.

Winter warming birdie treat delights

Ingredients: Bird seed, raisins, peanuts, grated cheese, lard, string, mixing bowl; scissors, and Christmas cookie cutters

Warm lard up to room temperature, but don’t melt it and cut into small pieces and place in bowl. Mix in other ingredients until the fat holds it all together. Place the cookie cutters on the waxed paper pan and spoon the birdseed mixture into the cookie cutters. Press the mixture down firmly.

Make delicious Christmas Cookie Tree Decorations with the kids

These delicious shortbread stars will look great on the tree – but we suspect they won’t be there long! Ingredients: 200 g plain flour, 100 g butter, 50 g caster sugar. Writing icing (great for drawing lines and shapes) and decorations. Measure flour and spoon into the sieve, and sift. Cut the butter into cubes. Add sugar and butter until it comes together into a ball, roll it out on a flat surface and dust with flour. Cut into shapes and place on a baking tray, remembering to make a hole at the top for the ribbon. Bake for 12-15 mins at 320F/160C/Gas . Cool, decorate and hang on the tree!

Make a hole and allow to dry. Tie the ribbon through the hole and delight the birds. NB - Not suitable for children with nut allergies

In a small zipper food storage bag or empty shaker container, mix: 1/2 cup uncooked oatmeal, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup red or green sugar crystals (as used for cake decorating) and glitter.
