Calling all young football enthusiasts, PTA members and family/football event organisers

Act now to give yourself a choice of childcare support According to the latest survey from the Family and Childcare Trust, childcare nursery costs have risen by over 5% during the last year alone, and now stand at over £6,000 per year. The situation is no better for part-time childminder care either, which has risen by 4.3% to £5,400 per year. For many parents it is a financial headache that is all too familiar as they balance up whether it is financially viable to remain in work at all. The rise in childcare costs continues to outstrip inflation. It’s a situation that threatens not only household budgets, but also the wider economy, since it pushes many parents towards abandoning work and staying at home. The government has already taken steps to address this problem by holding a childcare consultation to determine how existing childcare vouchers will be offered after the 2015 election. However, the changes currently in the pipeline will offer parents a different level of financial support and the change won’t necessarily be a positive one for all parents. Existing employer-led childcare voucher schemes can currently save each parent up to £933 per year, contributing £1,866 to a family when both parents are working. On the other hand, the government’s proposed Tax-Free Childcare Scheme is designed to save parents up to £2,000 per year, but in reality the average saving has been estimated at just £600. Therefore, for many parents, the incentive will be to start receiving childcare vouchers before the current cut-off point in autumn 2015. Blue Hair Day – raising money for Surrey based Harrison’s Fund A group of mums from Epsom are encouraging everyone to don blue wigs or turn their hair blue on 26 June for ‘Blue Hair Day’, to raise money for Surrey based Harrison’s Fund. ‘Blue Hair Day’ is the brainchild of Rachel Hill, Maria Booker, and Hannah Robinson after hearing the devastating news that their friend’s sons had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, which is a fatal genetic condition which affects the muscles, causing muscle weakness. Klara and Nick Taussig’s boys, Theo, 3, and Oskar, 1, were diagnosed last year. The disease is 100% fatal and affects 1 in 3,500 boys each year. “We are asking everyone in the area and beyond to get involved by wearing a blue wig on this day and getting sponsored by friends, family or colleagues or just do something fun wearing your wig and raise money your own way.” For more information or to get involved in Blue Hair Day please visit www.harrisonsfund.com

Foster care fact finding events in Sutton People interested in becoming foster carers are invited to attend one of a series of regular drop-in information events, being held in Sutton, to find out how they can help children and young people in the area who are in need of a foster family. The drop-in events take place every Thursday morning between 10am-12noon at Foster Care Associates’ (FCA) office at Mulgrave Chambers, 26-28 Mulgrave Road, Sutton, SM2 6LE, where potential foster carers can find out first-hand how to get involved from FCA’s experienced foster care team. Richard Dixon, Operations Manager for FCA London and Kent, said: “There is an urgent need for more foster carers throughout London and Kent. We are actively looking for responsible, nurturing adults who have a spare room and can give children in need of a foster home the support they need to thrive and grow. The Children’s Book of Philosophy, by DK publishing

Children’s Aquathlon added to London Triathlon 2015 A children’s aquathlon (combination swim and run) will kick off the London Triathlon 2015, the world’s largest multi-sport, mass participation, event weekend, on Saturday 8th August 2015 at London’s Docklands. This is the first time a children’s aquathlon will be hosted at the London Triathlon. The children will experience the same excitement and adrenaline as the 13,000 adult triathletes when they cross the finish line inside the ExCeL centre before crowds of spectators. The addition of the children’s event to the normal race weekend is part of the organiser’s bid to develop triathletes at an early age, increasing the appetite for multi-sports and hopefully growing awareness and interest in triathlon for future generations. The distances are broken down into age appropriate categories and distances offering the opportunity for children of all ages to get active at the London Triathlon. In addition to the aquathlon, children aged 4-14 will be able to enter a duathlon – a run-bike-run event, whilst under 4’s can also have their first foray into multi-sport with the scootathlon which combines a little bit of running with ‘cycling’ on a no-pedal bike or scooter. Entries for the children’s aquathlon will be priced at £22 and are available from www.thelondontriathlon.com The duathlon takes place on both Saturday and Sunday. Father’s day It’s Father’s Day this June 21st, so why not put your thinking cap on early and come up with something special for your dad? Or if you’re a dad, you could start dropping hints for your partner and children to treat you! Dads are often overlooked, especially in today’s busy world and if there are young children around, and Father’s Day is the perfect opportunity to make him feel special and wanted. Exiting times ahead for local pupils as government announce plans to open three new Free schools locally Free schools are brand new schools set up by parents, teachers and charities in response to demand from the local community. Nationally more than 40,000 pupils are already attending free schools just three-and-a-half years after the first one opened its gates. More than two-thirds are rated good or outstanding. Avanti Heath Clarke Primary School in Croydon Avanti Schools Trust will open a new primary school for 420 pupils in Croydon in September 2016. The school will have a Hindu faith designation and will deliver an engaging and inclusive curriculum with a focus on literacy and numeracy. The trust already runs four other schools, all of which have recently been rated as ‘good’ by Ofsted. Sutton Free School 1 The Greenshaw Learning Trust will open Sutton’s first free school in September 2017, providing 1,550 places, including 350 sixth form places. The school will specialise in English, maths, science and computing and aims to ensure all pupils succeed, regardless of their circumstances or background. WCGS Federation Free School in Croydon WCGS Federation Free School will be a new secondary school in Croydon for 11- to 18-year-olds run by the same group as the high performing Wallington County Grammar School, currently in the top 50 schools for A levels nationally. The school will follow the national curriculum and will embody the principles of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship.

National Theatre comes to the classroom This September, three acclaimed National Theatre productions will be available on demand in schools. Danny Boyle’s production of Frankenstein with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller, and Nicholas Hytner’s productions of Shakespeare’s Hamlet with Rory Kinnear, and Othello with Adrian Lester, will be free to stream on demand in every secondary school classroom in the UK. Each play is recorded in front of a live theatre audience by National Theatre Live, and comprehensive learning resources will support each play. “This new initiative underlines the National Theatre’s passionate commitment to supporting teachers and schools across the UK,” said Alice King-Farlow, Director of Learning at the NT. ‘In giving young people access to inspirational theatre, we aim to help schools to keep the arts as a vital part of the curriculum.’ Find out more at nationaltheatre.org.uk/schools

Leading by example: love your children by loving yourself

I’m not a father, but like you, I was a child once. As an adult I’m able to see that my relationship with my parents helped mould the person I am today. For better or worse, how our children see us navigating the challenges of life affects their adult lives. Of course we teach our children a number of things, but what better way to instill confidence and self-respect, than to allow them to observe us showing love and respect for ourselves? Louise L. Hay, author of the best-selling book ‘You Can Heal Your Life’, has long since spoken of the connection between our formative years and our adult lives, believing that any negative pattern that exists in adult life reflects the dynamics of relationships formed during our childhoods. Louise is considered the matriarch of the ‘self-improvement’ market. Her book has sold over 50 million copies since its release in 1985 and many thousands have attended ‘Heal Your Life’ workshops based on her philosophy. She ultimately believes that we

teach our children by leading by example. When we show our children that we can set and maintain healthy boundaries, demonstrating self-respect then ultimately our children will learn those behaviours and adopt them as their own.

Louise has created a simple 12-step guide to teach people how to love themselves. The simple steps are as follows 1. Stop all criticism Don’t criticise yourself or others for anything. If you make a mistake, learn from it and change the way you do things – don’t waste time putting yourself down.

5. Be kind to your mind If you find your inner critic telling you that you’re not good enough, realise that it’s only a thought and a thought can be changed. We all do it, but we don’t have to believe it.

9. Take care of your body Learn about nutrition. What kind of fuel does your body need in order to have optimum energy and vitality? Learn about exercise. What kind of exercise do you enjoy?

2. Forgive yourself If there’s something your regret, it’s time to let it go and forgive yourself. You did the best you could at that time, now you are growing and changing and you are doing things differently.

6. Praise yourself Criticism breaks down the inner spirit. Praise builds it up. Praise yourself as much as you can. Tell yourself how well you are doing with every little thing.

10. Do mirror work Every time you catch sight of yourself in the mirror give yourself a compliment or say ‘I love you’. Learn to cultivate a growing sense of love and respect for yourself.

7. Support yourself Find ways to support yourself. Reach out to friends and allow them to help you. It is being strong to ask for help when you need it.

11. Love yourself . . . Do it now Don't wait until you get well, or lose the weight, or get the new job, or find the new relationship. Begin now and do the best you can.

8. Be loving to your negatives We all have things we’d like to change about ourselves and that’s ok. Accept yourself as you are whilst you find ways to lovingly release the habits that no longer serve you.

12. Have fun Do you remember the things you did as a child that gave you joy? Try to recapture that feeling now by doing things that make you smile. Try to schedule something fun at least once a week.

3. Don’t scare yourself It’s easy to get caught in endless cycles of worry. Don’t scare yourself by thinking of the worst. Learn to recognise negative thoughts and replace them with something positive. 4. Be gentle and kind and patient Think of someone you love dearly. How do you feel? Learn to feel this way about yourself and be gentle and patient with yourself as you learn new ways of doing things.

At the foundation of these principles is the simple belief that learning to love and accept ourselves is the key to lasting happiness. If our children learn to love and respect themselves at a young age because they’ve watched Mum and Dad doing the same, surely they will be more likely to live healthy, balanced lives in their later years. www.london-holistic.co.uk

New development checks Parents are to get a complete picture of their child’s development at the age of two as part of new reforms to help families. With over £2million pledged to support joined-up checks on education and health development, parents will now have a better picture of their child’s progress at this early stage. “No parent should be left in the dark about their child’s development,” said Childcare Minister Sam Gyimah. “There should be an accessible check for all at the age of two, which is a pressure point where issues such as speech delay and behavioural problems begin to appear”. “Today’s announcement will mean more families can get valuable information in a more convenient way.” Health Minister Dr Dan Poulter added, “We know it’s important to check children’s health and development when they are two, so that if extra support is needed it can be identified early.
