‘Use them or lose them’ says online library service Despite reports of possible library closures, 60% of us are still not visiting our local libraries, according to research conducted by Bookmark Your Library. The survey of 2000 people found that almost half of those surveyed said libraries aren’t needed as much as they were a decade ago due to technological advances with the internet, tablets and Kindles. However, when asked how they would feel if their local library shut down, one in five admitted they would be very disappointed, and one in ten said it would be a loss to the local community. Renewable energy centre opens in Raynes Park

The two hour Little Bugs Club at Sutton Community Farm (a not-for-profit enterprise growing vegetables and running a veg box service for the local community) will run every Monday and Wednesday from 9.30 —11.30am. Sessions will be based around seasons with activities like treasure hunts, singing, digging and growing, and reading stories. Pricing is per family. Each session includes a free organic snack and a warm drink. If you sign up for a full 10 week course you will be given vouchers so that if you miss sessions, you can make them up the following week. Work begins on first of Mayor’s ‘pocket parks’ Work is beginning in Croydon on the first of Boris Johnson, Mayor of London’s 100 ‘pocket parks’ – transforming under-used urban spaces into mini-oases across the capital in a £2m scheme. ‘Pocket parks’ – around the size of a tennis court – are set to reinvent some of London’s forgotten nooks and crannies and make the capital an even better place to live and work. In Croydon, a new, natural play space, with plants, seating and a heritage trail through Croydon’s Old Town will be created around St John’s Memorial Gardens. The trail will lead visitors past the most significant buildings in Croydon. The park is possible thanks to a £40,000 grant from Central London’s City Hall.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has issued new guidance for owners of pet rodents following two recent UK cases of hantavirus. Hantaviruses are passed from rodents to humans through inhalation of infected animal waste including urine, faeces and saliva. They do not pass from person to person. The majority of hantavirus infections present as non-specific, mild flu-like illness, with occasional fever, headache, respiratory symptoms and kidney dysfunction. Oliver Crouch, age 6 and student at Stagecoach Sutton, is part of the new film called ‘Third Person’ starring Liam Neeson, James Franco, Mila Kunis, Kim Basinger, Adrien Brody and Maria Bello, directed by Academy Award Winner Paul Haggis. Oliver recently travelled to Rome to shoot all his scenes for the film which is due out later this year. He plays the son of James Franco and Mila Kunis and really enjoyed meeting all the actors face to face. Another Stagecoach Sutton student Leilah de Meza has just played the part of Vivien in the 5 part ITV Drama Lightfields directed by Damon Thomas. Learning to Play an Instrument By Juliette Dixon

– most children will quickly develop the taste for something larger and more expensive. Thankfully, most music centres operate a hire scheme so if your child wants to flit from one instrument to another you are not left with a small orchestra in your house and a large hole in your bank balance. Once they are more committed it’s a good idea to think about purchasing an instrument for them as it will save you money in the long run.

As a child I always remember changing cars was a big problem. No decision was ever made until we had all traipsed up to the car show room, complete with my Dad’s double bass, and then sat in the car to make sure we could all (instrument included) fit in the car. I have to say that I felt a little smug when my daughter said she wanted to learn the flute – after all, the only real problem with that was that she might lose it. However, my smugness was short lived when my second daughter announced that she wanted to learn the harp. There was no way that was going to fit in our car and a horse box seemed a little extreme, but luckily I soon discovered that they do make small harps for children.

Practice makes perfect.

OK, so you’ve relented – they have a nice new instrument and an enthusiastic teacher so it’s time to start on the basics. Although at first your child will be full of enthusiasm and will probably be driving you mad with their eagerness to go over and over the same thing (which they do have to do), the realisation that practice is a way of life will soon hit them. You will then have a child that wants to clean the car, help unload the dishwasher, in fact help with anything rather than doing their practice. But practice really does make perfect, even if it’s only 10 minutes a day. Teachers soon get fed up with excuse after excuse, however varied they may be, and if your child doesn’t practise they will soon start to dread their lessons.

You see, there are many things to take into consideration when choosing an instrument for your child. More often than not they have their heart set on a specific instrument and as long as it’s a practical choice then you may as well go along with it – after all they are going to have to spend quite a lot of time with it one way or another, so they ought to play something they like. If your child is less specific then you can guide them into something you would like to hear and that won’t be too taxing on the ears.

How much does it cost?

It doesn’t matter how much your child wants to learn a particular instrument, if it’s not going to work it will be counter-productive and will end in tears. Lots of children start on the recorder as it’s inexpensive, easy to learn, pleasant to the ear and will give a real sense of achievement. While this is a good introduction, be prepared

National Plan for Music Education

On 25 November 2011, the Government launched its first ever National Plan for Music Education entitled ‘The Importance of Music’. The Government wants to enable children from all backgrounds throughout England to have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and experience the musical opportunities available in its aim to enrich their cultural experiences alongside their academic and vocational studies. It’s party time! A birthday party is the highpoint of the year for most kids – so the pressure is on to get it right. The secret, as ever, is in the planning. But how do you find out which party is right for your child? We guide you through the options.

The restaurant party

What is it? A mealbased party in e.g. a pizza restaurant, where the kids are allowed to help or watch in the food preparation

The traditional party

What is it? An at-home for the birthday child and friends, with traditional games like pass the parcel (always a winner), pin the tail on the donkey, and musical bumps. Who’s it suitable for? Great for nursery and reception age children, but don’t neglect its values for older kids, especially girls of eight or nine who often enjoy nothing more than inviting their friends back to their house and having a girly time. The pros: It’s cheap (or at least, it certainly can be); other parents often stay to help you out and keep you company, especially if you promise a glass of prosecco to help everyone through. The cons: You may need to redecorate afterwards; you’ll certainly need to do a major tidy up. It can be difficult to keep your birthday child’s siblings out of the way, which could lead to conflict. Top tips to make it work: 1. Agree ground rules with the birthday child beforehand about which rooms are in and out of bounds. 2. Have a timetable for what’s happening when. 3. Think about a project, e.g. build a bear kits, jewellery-making, pirate games. 4. Give them chance to let off steam in the garden. 5. For tea, spread a huge paper tablecloth on the floor and get them to sit around the edges of it. At the end, simply fold it up with all the rubbish inside and bin.

The action party

What is it? Paintballing, go-karting, swimming, Go Ape etc. Who’s it suitable for? Older children (seven plus); kids with lots of energy who enjoy racing around. The pros: Your house remains intact; the kids have something to focus on, and lots of opportunities to let off steam; many children end up covered in bruises from paintballing (though they don’t seem to mind).

The cons: It can be very expensive; although some options such as a swimming pool party or trip to an adventure playground, can be good value. Top tips to make it work: 1. If the activity is long and energetic it might be best to postpone a winter birthday party to the spring (the kids might get wet and cold as they’ll be outside for ages).

Who’s it suitable for? Older children from age eight to 12; children who enjoy the chance to meet and chat more than the chance to run around. The pros: At its best, it’s very civilised; you can even have a second table in the restaurant and invite some other parents along, so it’s a meal out for you as well. Children enjoy sense of being ‘grown up’ and eating out with friends. The cons: It’s expensive; raucous behaviour will upset other diners.

2. Take plenty of water, squash, snacks including fruit – they’ll need plenty of energy for all that running around.

Top tips to make it work: 1. Make sure you’re booked for a time when the restaurant won’t be busy.

3. Make absolutely sure you’ve checked all restrictions, e.g. height restrictions, beforehand – there’s nothing worse than finding out on the day that one of your guests is too small to participate.

2. A restaurant near a park, where kids can run off a bit of energy afterwards, is a good idea.

4. Make sure you get parental consent forms signed well in advance – the venue will require you to do this before they allow you in.

3. Don’t rely on the pizza-making/chefwatching for absolutely all the entertainment. Bring things like colouring packs or check the restaurant will provide them, and think of some easy games to play round the table, e.g. I-Spy, in case things flag.

4. Make sure you sort out the cake arrangements beforehand; most restaurants allow you to bring your own (don’t forget the candles and matches).

Who’s it suitable for? Children of five plus, who are confident about being left somewhere they don’t know.

5. Don’t limit yourself to chain restaurants – your local eaterie may well be prepared to accommodate your party, and may be more flexible than bigger establishments.

5. Ensure the kids wear any safety equipment at all times. What is it? An indoor party in a hired venue.

The pros: A lot more space than they’d have if you were at home. The cons: You’ll have to leave the place spotless afterwards, and pay for any damage. Top tips to make it work: 1. Try to find somewhere with outdoor space as well in case it’s a lovely day. 2. Ask if you can borrow/use playgroup play equipment. 3. Have lots of help, and have tea reasonably early in the afternoon so you can get it tidied away before the end. 4. If you’ve got the budget, consider hiring an entertainer – the extra space will make it a lot more fun.

And finally...whatever sort of party you’re having, don’t neglect the party bags. Every kid, at every party, is secretly (or not-sosecretly) longing for a party bag – and part of the excitement for your child is helping to put the bags together. Have a budget and stick to it – party bags can add hugely to the cost of a party – but try and limit the wasteful plastic toys that get thrown away immediately. Parents turn to second-hand goods Research recently released by parent charity NCT shows that new parents are turning to second-hand goods to try and keep down the costs of raising a family. Findings showed that half of new parents (50%) had bought second hand baby or toddler items in the last six months. Also, the majority were more likely to buy things such as baby or toddler clothes, toys, prams and high chairs second-hand rather than new.

Coping with the stress of exams As our children approach entrance exams, 11-plus and all kinds of other tests, we feel for them, but that is not enough. We can also help them through this stressful time. Dr Lucy Russell offers some advice to worried parents

Dear parents of year 5 and 6 children,

Now that you understand stress and the impact it has on you, we can look at what you can do to help yourself cope with it.

This article has been written for you to share with your child as they approach their exams. I am sure they will be looking to do their best, not only for themselves but also for you. There’s always a considerable amount of playground ‘chat’ about these exams, especially the 11-plus, and this tends to make children more anxious than might have been the case. This article explains that getting ‘stressed’ is normal and provides some ideas to help.

1. Look after yourself

Make sure you get lots of sleep. Stop homework or playing on computer games at least one hour before going to bed.

So, I guess by now you have heard lots about the 11-plus exam and maybe you have discussed with your parents whether or not you will take this exam. Or if you are taking SATs this summer, you might have been practising at school or have heard people saying it’s important to do well so you are in the right s t re am s at  Jumpy secondary school.  Can’t sit still Some children can be  Fast breathing worried about these exams.  Shaky hands This might be for lots of reasons. In fact getting ‘stressed’ or anxious when you’re faced with exams, is very common. Leading up to an exam, your body gets pumped with two substances called adrenalin and cortisol, which can actually help you focus.

This ‘stress response’ was helpful when  Muscles feeling tense we were cavemen and needed to run away from wild animals…  Upset stomach  Sweating  Difficulty getting to sleep

When you’re stressed, do some relaxing and enjoyable things. This calms your nervous system, stops the release of adrenalin and gives your body a rest. It creates ‘feel good’ chemicals in your body which help you relax. It’s especially important to do this in the evenings as this will help you sleep well.

3. Keep things in perspective

Try to challenge any panicky thoughts like ‘If I don’t pass, my future is over.’ Of course it means a lot to you and your family to do well, however, many people don’t pass exams and life will go on. Challenge any ‘negative’ thoughts you’re having which seem to make you stressed. Thoughts are not always true. Work out what your worrying thoughts are and then check out whether they are true or not by chatting to your parents or a friend. There is no let up as every day, every week and every term is busy. The tasks may be different but that is all.

To ensure that Cumnor House remains the school of choice for prospective parents and, by doing so, to continue to provide opportunities that are second to none, both within the classroom and beyond. More specifically, there are plans to develop the main school site as well as further improve our nursery provision.

I try to get around the school, to talk to the boys as well as colleagues, either relating to routine matters or sometimes just to have a chat.

When the end of term comes, how do you feel?

Q A

What is your biggest headache/ challenge at the moment?

Dealing with an ever increasing amount of red tape and bureaucracy provide the greatest challenge because running a school should be more about engaging fully with children, colleagues and parents.

A sense of pride in what has been achieved but also the realisation that there is always more to do in terms of planning in order to be fully prepared for the weeks and months that lie ahead. It is always wiser to be proactive than to react to situations when time is invariably pressing.

What’s your best memory of running the school?

There are far too many to recall but seeing the pupils develop and achieve as they move through the school ranks particularly high and is on-going. Two events last year also provide special memories: seeing our Junior Choir performing at the Royal Albert Hall as National Choir Champions was a particularly proud occasion as was watching our Under 11 swimmers in Sheffield become ESSA National Swimming Champions and, in doing so, setting a new national record time in the Medley relay. Sometimes, though, it is a simple gesture that strikes the right chord. It could be a ‘thank you’ from a delighted parent or pupil. Nothing, however, surpasses the tankard in my office, presented to me by a boy shortly before he moved on to his senior school a few years ago. On it is engraved: To Peter Clare-Hunt who Gave a Boy a Chance; very humbling. The next Open Morning is Friday 7 June 9.15 – 11.00 a.m. (see listings below).

Education New 11+ Test for Sutton’s boys’ schools The boys’ grammar schools in Sutton (Wilson’s, Wallington Grammar and Sutton Grammar as well as the Selective stream at Greenshaw) have collectively launched a new Selective Eligibility Test to be held on Saturday 21 September 2013. The 11+ entrance test will now be held in two stages: first, a Numeracy and Literacy test and then a Maths and English test. In an attempt to minimise the impact of tutoring, the first stage tests will seek to test the child’s numerical reasoning and literacy skills at KS2. Pupils will be required to think logically, discard irrelevant information and apply their reasoning skills to the questions posed. In Numeracy, an excellent understanding of the application of numerical concepts would be an advantage. Not such a heartless generation after all In response to the latest British Attitudes Survey which suggests that the younger generation is heartless, caring little about wider society, Year 10 pupils from Thames Christian College worked through the weekend to meet a real-life journalist deadline, writing articles that the editor of idea magazine might consider worthy of publication. The author of the winning article, Jerry Beatson, aged 15, defended young people explaining that not everyone’s attitude is “What’s in it for me?” “A new generation is forging a new type of community tied to the roots of the traditional ideas of community but inspired by the influence of new technology and new modern ideas. I believe if an institution as old as the Church can change and adapt in this world, then we can develop and adapt to our community.” As a result of the maturity illustrated in Jerry’s well written piece, Thames pupils have been asked to submit articles on a regular basis as guest writers for the Evangelical Alliance’s online magazine. Many dyslexic children are very bright, but struggle to fulfil their potential in the classroom if dyslexia or other learning difficulties are not properly identified. Cressida Cowell, to judge National Young Writers’ Award Children aged five to 14 are invited to write a 500 word short story on the theme “Around the World”. The competition is organised by Explore Learning, who provide maths and English tuition to children aged five to 14, and is open for entries from Monday 15 April until Monday 3 June. Reading challenge for the holidays Children’s reading can ‘dip’ during the long summer holidays. The annual Summer Reading Challenge helps get three quarters of a million children into libraries to keep up their reading skills and confidence. The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six books during the long summer holiday. There is a different theme each year and this year’s theme is ‘Creepy House’. Children can read whatever they like - fact books, joke books, picture books, audio books - just as long as they are borrowed from the library. Get walking to school Yes, it’s that time of year again. 2013’s Walk To School Week runs from 20 - 24 May, This year’s event promises to be the biggest and best yet. The aim is to bring together nearly a million schoolchildren, teachers and parents as they walk to school. As part of National Walking Month, the campaign aims to teach children about the benefits of walking, with each day focussing on a different aspect of walking including safety, discovery, healthy, eco-friendly and social time.
