i to all readers. I don’t want to be the bearer of bad news but yes, I guess that is the summer over for another year.

I like autumn though, the trees a blaze of orange, red and green, the piles of crisp leaves that are such a toddler magnet and the sun creeping lower in the sky day by day. We can happily start wearing the clothes that suit us again, dark cardigans and waterproofs, something that our friends in Funky Rascals in Cupar could help with? The other great thing about autumn is the food. I don’t know about you, but our family meals went a bit to pot over the holidays, so we’re looking forward to cooking up some proper autumn treats.

Our local food feature has all the inspiration you need for putting great food on your families’ table. Think seasonal vegetables for hearty soup with freshly baked bread for those hungry after school appetites.

Get your passport to the past young time travellers

I

In September doors open free again around Fife. Children are welcome to bring their parents to explore places that are normally a little bit secret. Places like where our Councilors hold their meetings to decide that Amazon has permission to build that huge new building by the M90, or where the police put people when they have stepped outside the law, or even where actors put on their costumes for the Christmas pantomime.

This year children under 16 have a chance to win a booklet about an aspect of the history of Fife. To take part in the draw you need visit one of the 69 venues taking park, pick up a Passport, or download one from the Fife Direct website. Then simply answer a special question in any four venues across the three Sundays of the event. Correct answers will get their Passport stamped or signed and four correct answers then returned will become eligible for the draw. There will be 100 booklets up for grabs.

Fife Council supports the event across three Sundays; 4th 11th and 18th September, a great chance to have three entertaining days for free! 

A dramatic day out

O

n a beautiful early summer’s day at the end of May, Families Scottish editors, with their families, were welcomed to Stirling Castle for a day out with a difference. We were to be lead back into the world of the Scottish Renaissance royal court to experience just what it would have been like to have been part of the royal court in the 1540s.

We were led back in time by a band of costumed interpreters, who took on the roles of everyone from servants and bodyguards, to court officials and noblemen. Indeed leading our group was Mary of Guise herself, the widow of James V who had built the palace but who had died in 1542 just after it was completed.

Their daughter, the famed Mary Queen of Scots was raised there.

The girls in our group really took to the Queen with her love of fine costumes and pearls.

Equally, the boys enjoyed a fencing lesson from the male bodyguards and found their jokes about royal etiquette most amusing.

The highlight of our tour

was a privileged look around the recently unveiled six newly restored royal apartments.

Here, we wondered at the magnificently painted ceilings with impressive coats of arms on the walls and trompe l’oeil effects. We also marvelled at the Stirling Tapestries, a recreation of one of the world’s finest set of medieval tapestries. Yet another must see included the Stirling Heads. These are magnificent 16th-century metre-wide oak medallions which were handcarved with depictions of kings, queens, emperors, courtiers and mythical heroes – now on permanent public display.

After the tour, we had a browse in the lovely gift shop which was packed with plenty of affordable mementoes. The day for us, ended as all such visits should, in the cafe. The Unicorn Cafe, is a must see. Set in the ramparts, on a clear day you can see for miles in any direction, and whilst sipping your latte, you can truly see why this site was picked as the best place for miles around from which to defend a kingdom. 

£400 Spent just to clean your house and clothes!

T

hat’s right; according to consumer group Which households are spending an average of £400 on products that don’t do the wonderful things they claim to do.

Dryer Balls claim to cut laundry time by 25%, soften fabrics and reduce creasing but after testing, Which found that the drying time was actually longer – costing you more money - with no improvement in softness and no reduced creasing.

Colour catcher apparently claims to stop colours running in the wash.

However, it’s not really needed if the instructions on the clothing labels are followed.

And what about the myriad of specialist sprays and cleaners on offer in the supermarket aisle for all the different rooms and surfaces in your home – not necessary, and mindboggling!

Save plenty of money and time using a general, multi-purpose detergent, or mild dish washing liquid. It works just as well on multiple surfaces from windows to carpets, to benches, and on different stains. And, if you can find 10-15 minutes to do a bit of cleaning every day, you can save further money on detergent as only a small amount is needed if the stains are fresh. Most stains can even be removed with pure water if treated quickly – and best of all you won’t have to spend your

weekends scrubbing and washing while everyone else is down at the park or at the cinema.

Even better, you can also make your own cleaning solutions for pennies! All you need is vinegar, lemons, and baking soda. ÊÊ Vinegar naturally cleans like an all-purpose cleaner, removes soaps scum and hard water stains, and is a disinfectant and deodorizer.

Mix a solution of 1 part water to 1 part vinegar and you have a solution that will clean most areas of your home. It is safe to use on all surfaces from the toilet bowl to the kitchen bench (not marble) and the smell disappears as soon as it is dry.

In the laundry it is also a very effective, non-toxic fabric softener; just add ½ a cup to the rinse cycle, ÊÊ Lemon is a great substance to clean and shine brass and copper. Or mix 1 cup olive oil with ½ cup lemon juice and you have a furniture polish for your hardwood furniture. ÊÊ Baking soda is a great alternative to commercial abrasive cleansers, as well as a great deodoriser. Place a box in the fridge and freezer to absorb odurs – or anywhere you need deodorising action.

Now, what to do with the £400 you’ve just saved?

Music to our ears At last - a child friendly adult event!

T

he Scottish Chamber Orchestra is launching a pilot series of concerts – Big Ears, Little Ears – for parents and young babies across central Scotland this September, providing mums, dads and carers with the chance to share the experience of high quality live music with their infants in an informal atmosphere.

The concerts will be of a baby-friendly, 45 minute duration, starting at 11am, and take place in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling between 27 – 29 September. The programme of music – performed live by the Orchestra – includes well-known classics by Mendelssohn, Prokofiev and Beethoven as well as traditional Scottish folksongs and lullabies performed by popular Scottish mezzo soprano Karen Cargill.

Tickets cost £6 for a parent with a child aged 18 months or younger.

Louise Martin, SCO Connect Projects Manager, said “We wanted to offer something really exciting and unique for new parents, a group who too often find that events they might previously have enjoyed or tried out aren’t open to them when they have a young baby in tow. This will be a proper grown-up treat, a stunning professional performance of inspirational orchestral music; but one at which their baby – complete with the usual baby crying, burps and gurgles – will be welcomed just as warmly. No-one will have to worry about being ‘the one with the baby’ because all the audience will be in the same boat.” Music to our ears!  See Out and About for times, ticketing etc.

f your child is affected by hearing or communication difficulties you’ll know how important it is that they receive the right support to help them communicate effectively. This support is vital throughout their education.

Donaldson’s School in Linlithgow caters for pupils who are deaf or have communication difficulties. Pupils come from all over Scotland, including some from this area, who have full or part-time day or residential places funded by their local authority. Donaldson’s policy of inclusive communication is unique and utilises a wide

range of approaches to communication based on each pupil’s individual needs.

Donaldson’s has a nursery, primary and secondary school plus Future Focus, a new post school provision, and accepts pupils at any stage. fter popping in to Alison Stewart’s Kirkcaldy salon [dangerously opposite Rejects...] with the aim of getting my girls fringes cut, I was compelled to ask for some hair care tips after seeing how, even just a little timely hair care can have big results. At the salon Nicky spent all of 5 minutes cutting Amy’s hair, didn’t deviate from the fringe and STILL managed to completely transform her.

She went from normal 5 year old to a cool, stylish young thing that wouldn’t look out of place as the new face of Debenhams Blue Zoo kids range.

Caring for your child’s hair – Here are Alison’s tips!

I

am so excited to be part of Families Fife and give a huge thank you to Susan for this great opportunity.

I live in Kirkcaldy with my wonderful husband, Peter (he’s going to read this one!) and gorgeous children, Gabriel (6) and Grace (4). I have spent the last 6 years having fun as a full-time mum although my poor husband has had to suffer the days that weren’t so much fun. Who hasn’t done the “ I can’t cope with YOUR children any more, come home!” phone call – yip I thought it might ring some bells. The only way I have survived motherhood is by sharing it with friends and I am grateful to have such great friends who are always available for a cuppa.

After 6 years of baking carrot cake (it’s all I can do), I thought it was about time to start using my brain so please bear with me. Although our brains don’t stop working as mums, we just don’t get the time to use them! I invite you to share my wee blog on our Families website as you get 5 minutes to enjoy a cuppa – hopefully a hot cup although, for those mums with younger children the cold cup of tea will eventually get hot again, usually when they start nursery!

ÊÊ Regular care of your child’s hair will keep it looking its best and will teach them good hair hygiene habits. ÊÊ Babies and toddlers with even a small amount of hair need regular care to keep

their hair and scalp healthy to encourage hair growth. ÊÊ Use a detangling spray, we recommend Paul Mitchell Taming Spray and a paddle brush to remove tangles.

Even on days you don’t wash their hair this will work really well. Invest in a Tangle Teezer they really do work. ÊÊA child’s first visit to the hairdressers can be a daunting thought. Bring your child along to the salon a few times before they are due for a haircut to familiarise them with their surroundings. Ask for an appointment during the quieter times; so you can both enjoy the experience.

Build excitement and talk about the haircut. Let them know it is part of growing up and that it’s a fun thing to do. ÊÊ Encourage your child to brush their hair regularly and let them practice on your hair. 

Outdoor play - the Lilliput way!

A

s autumn approaches staff and children at Lilliput Nursery in Dunfermline are planning ways to continue their learning in the great outdoors. The nursery has invested in waterproof playsuits and a selection of wellington boots to ensure children are able to enjoy the local environment regardless of the weather. Michelle Nelson, Nursery Manager, commented “We are great believers in the concept that there is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing, and are determined that our children will still have access to outdoor learning in all seasons. Even our youngest children will be out for regular autumn walks in the park and around the town centre amenities.”

Some of the many seasonal activities we will be participating in over coming months include, caring for our garden, sweeping up the leaves, autumn arts and crafts and visits to Pittencrieff Park.

Autumn also brings the joys of Halloween and Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. During this time children at Lilliput will explore dark and light introducing early science, enjoy Halloween crafts, dressing up and traditional trick or treat games, bake pumpkin pies and model diwa lamps from clay. 

s I am from the other side of the Forth, I always marvel at how many fields there are in Fife. And they are all productive. We are so lucky in this area to have such a plethora of producers and sellers that Familes thought it worth taking a closer look at some of the farm shops in our vicinity.

Indeed the last survey in 2008 by SAC (Scottish Agricultural College] estimated that the value of Scottish local food was worth £500 million to the economy and this is a figure which will be higher today. The good and possibly surprising news, is that we are not that likely at all to be paying more at such shops and markets. It was found that the prices were comparative but that the quality of the produce and the freshness at the markets was superior to that of the supermarkets. I suppose that you don’t get the same sort of BOGOF deals that the big chains offer but it pays to be wary of these. What are they pushing and how can they afford to sell it so cheaply? The answer is because they buy it cheaply and this brings into question the whole supply chain. Made in Britain can often be code for packaged in Britain. Many other countries, even within the EU do not have the same high farming standards that we enjoy here. These standards are put in place to protect consumers from buying low grade produce. Up a hill generally!! Gets all your senses

The Balgedie Toll Tavern. Pub food as it should be, not too expensive & great kids menu.

The Althos Clinic in Perth of course!! Not that I am biased!? Seriously, it is a really lovely space and a fantastic team of therapists work from there. Everything from Osteopathy to Life Coaching. You feel looked after as soon as you come in the door.

Proudest eco-friendly moment?

Our wedding guests gave money to Macmillan Cancer instead of buying presents. We raised over £2000 and saved on buying more “things”!

he children of the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy recently put on their end of term show.

Pictured here are some of the younger performers who retold the story of the ‘Old Woman who lived in a Shoe’, which gave them the opportunity to become “naughty children� and to engage with a giant spider!

The head of the school Barbara Brett explains: ‘our children are not ambitious actors or budding thespians: they do not aim for the limelight, on screen or stage, but do hope to excel in any arena that life shows them - and to enjoy any experience with enthusiasm and a positive outlook’.

When it comes to the end of the year, however, to be able to present themselves with flair and imagination in front of their parents and friends, is a

clear demonstration of what they have achieved throughout the term - and their delight and pride in these achievements was very clear. The older children took to the high seas in “Pirate Joe�, while others joined a colourful circus with a lion that refused to be co-operative. The warm applause of their audiences gave every child a delighted pride in their achievements.
