warm welcome to the May/ June issue of Families Fife – and I really hope it is warm! With the temperature heating up (all be it a little slow), this issue is packed full of fun things to do over the coming months.

If you are struggling to think of ideas for Summer holiday childcare, there are some suggestions and some great days out if you have the time off.

The Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014 aims to improve the wellbeing of children and young people in Scotland.

The Act introduces the offer of a Named Person for every child and young person.

What does the Named Person do?

They are a central point of contact for advice, information and support so children and young people get the right help when they need it.

Who will be the Named Person?

‘Getting it Right’ in Fife

T

he Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014 aims to help improve the wellbeing of children and young people in Scotland.

Central to the Act is a requirement for local Authorities and health boards to provide the Named Person Service to every child and young person in their area.

What will the Named Person do?

The Named Person is there to offer advice, information, and support and, where necessary, to help children and young people access other services for help.

Who will be the Named Person?

Your Named Person will normally be the health visitor, for a pre-school child, or a promoted teacher, such as a headteacher, or guidance teacher for a school age child.

The Named Person duties are integrated into their existing role and strengthen the support they currently provide, formalising their position as a central contact for children, parents and other people who are working with them.

Preschools – your need to know guide

M

ore parents than ever send their children to preschool or nursery, thanks to free places for three and four-year-olds, and for some two-year-olds.

Preschool is about learning through play and gets your child used to being separated from you and other carers. It helps kids become familiar with a more school-like environment and the behaviours expected there, such as sharing and taking turns.

ÊHow Ê much free childcare am I entitled to?

All three and four-year-olds in Scotland receive 600 hours annually - this can be in a preschool, nursery or with a registered childminder. ÊHow Ê can I choose the right preschool for my child?

Travel & Outdoors I’m Katie Johnston ( 36yrs) from Perth owner of Mbody Therapies & MummyFit Perth, mother to Findlay (6) and Hayley (3) who inspired me to pursue my interest in fitness and classes for mothers and babies and develop these in my local community alongside my massage therapies business which is now located at the newly opened Club 300 in Perth. As a first time mum I knew there was a gap in the market for parent and child classes so I established Pre Natal Pilates, Buggy Fitness, Post natal Pilates & Baby and with my recent addition of Hartbeeps Perthshire, a franchise which offers classes for children from birth to 4 years.

Why you like living where you do? Born and raised in Perth, I find the area really nice for bringing up kids with access to the great outdoors and just on the doorstep to swimming, skating, dancing and so many more fun activities to do throughout the week. In recent years the growth in this area to get children more active is great to see and choice is second to none. Having dealt with a fair few parents in my classes you find those with children spread the word, are loyal and support classes in the Perthshire area.

Favourite shop: Rae Peacock Hair is an awesome hairdressers with fab service and a chilled out vibe where you are really made to feel special (and awesome homemade brownies too)! A definite treat for me when I get the time!!

Favourite park: I have to say in Perth we are fairly lucky with our parks so I have to support the North and South inch parks.

Further afield we like to visit Macrosty park in Crieff and Kirkgate park in Kinross.

Favourite children’s club/class: My son has recently started Taekwondo at Moncrieffe church hall in Craigie run by

Ms Dewar who has a wealth of knowledge and passion and the discipline and activity taught at class is great for him. For my daughter, I am looking into dance classes but I know Inspire Studio at Highland house has a great range of classes and is where I myself teach post Natal pilates. They also both enjoy Swimming lessons at Live Active Leisure which run from Perth Leisure Pool and Findlay has also tried the ice skating at Dewars which is great fun too.

Favourite day out: We like Edinburgh Zoo or Blair Drummond Safari park as it keeps the kids entertained from start to finish and you can take a picnic and make a day of it, meeting up with friends or bringing family - only downside can be the weather!!

Favourite child friendly restaurant: As a family we like the Maltings in Perth or Frankie & Benny’s for their child friendly environment and good menu choices.

Proudest eco-friendly moment: Remembering to switch off the lights when not required.

Best planet saving tip: Don’t overfill your kettle - only boil as much as you need.

No parent should be without: Wellie Boots and a change of clothes.

Parenting pet hates: Kids not listening and repeating yourself constantly!!

Most embarrassing moment: While driving my first car, a Peugeot 205, I was travelling back to Edinburgh where I was studying and while on the motorway could not understand why there was massive gusts of wind hitting the back of my neck until I realised my boot had flown open!! I was mortified to say the least.

Funniest comment your kids have ever made: When my daughter was born my son, then 3, announced to the maternity unit at Perth Royal Infirmary “ Is she staying here then “ to be told well actually this is your new baby sister. Possibly not telling him until then that he was to be a big brother and mummy hadn’t actually eaten a lot of cake was not my best plan!

Favourite family holiday spot: Centre Parcs - everything is on site and at your disposal and the fact that cars are parked off site makes it safe for the kids to explore and enjoy the outdoors.

Most loved children’s book: We are the biggest fans of Julia Donaldson books in our house and have just about the whole collection from Gruffalo to Tabby Mctat.

Best children DVD or television programme: Wreck it Ralph / Paw Patrol or Sophia the first are all well watched in our house.  Have a look at www.mbody.org.uk for more information about my ventures.

Choose a beach

S

pring has sprung and the (slightly!) warmer weather encourages us all to get outside a bit more.

We don’t need to boast when it comes to our coast – our beaches speak for themselves.

There are so many beautiful beaches in Fife, you’d be hard pressed to find a favourite. Our landscape means you won’t ever be too far from one either.

Beach walks offer so much: guddling around in rock pools (please put all creatures back where they belong afterwards!), working harbours, kite-flying spots, acres of open space, birdlife, or even just good old sand castle building.

In case you need a little help, here are a few suggestions along Fife’s Fringe of Gold

Leven – Full on Fun

Coastline doesn’t have to be contemplative and calming. The beach at Leven is perfect for the fizz and fun of family life. With picnic tables, a promenade, skateboard park, children’s play area and outdoor gym you’ll need a rest. Luckily with all of this comes sand, sea and glorious views.

These are just suggestions and Aberdour Black Sands, Silver Sands, Anstruther Billowness, Crail Roome Bay, Lower Largo and countless others mean you really are spoilt for choice.

There’s only one thing for it…. …you’re going to have get out there and sample them all for yourself!

St. Andrews West Sands

A vast expanse of beautiful coastline in one of Scotland’s most picturesque towns and the setting for the famous Chariots of Fire opening scenes. This iconic cinematic image was recreated in hilarious style by Rowan Atkinson for the London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony at the very same location.

Excellent too for kite-sports and long, lazy walks. A lush landscape and great escape – all rolled into one.

Standing at the foot of Hot Pot Wynd in Dysart, the 18th century Harbourmaster’s House is home to the Fife Coast & Countryside Trust.

Visit our Coastal Centre exhibition to find out how to start your Fife Coastal Path adventure, but not before a trip to our Bistro, with it’s delicious menu and fabulous harbourside views.

Elie Ruby Bay – Blue Flag Beach

A majesty of marine life can be found in the rock pools in Elie Ruby Bay. You’ll find barnacles and limpets, periwinkles and crabs and it is a fabulous spot to explore at low tide.

You can walk right along to Elie Habour beach and take part in some water sports if you are feeling more adventurous. Or head into the village for restoring tea and cake instead!

orried how you’ll juggle work with childcare over the never-ending summer holidays? Relax – there are plenty of options to ensure you’ll still be employed come the middle of August…

Looking after your children during the summer holidays is no easy feat for any working parent, with many mums and dads resorting to booking their annual leave separately to ensure someone keeps an eye on the kids. But it doesn’t have to be that way – regardless of your budget, there are many affordable solutions to keep those wages coming in while your little ones enjoy the summer break.

Relatives

Your first port of call should be looking at close family members to see if anyone could potentially help out. Your parents or in-laws are ideal, as most will revel in the chance to spoil their grandchildren with days out and endless supplies of ice cream! Bear in mind their age and don’t over-burden them if they agree to help, sticking to set times and helping with packed lunches or sending your kids with pocket money towards yet another trip to the zoo. It might be free childcare for you but that doesn’t mean it won’t cost your parents!

School mums

Why not have a chat with other mums at the school gates to see if they can help? A winwin situation; your child gets to spend the day with one of their friends – plus you save on childcare costs! Make sure you only ask mums you feel confident leaving your child with – and who your little one feels comfortable around – and take a little gesture of thanks over at the end of the day, such as a small box of chocolates. However, most mums might instead prefer a ‘play date swap’ in return, where they look after your child one day in the week and you look after theirs another.

Childminders

For many wo rking parents, childminders are the best option over the school holidays, often sticking to the same person they

normally get to do the school drop off and pick up. If you don’t have one, ask friends and other mums who they recommend, or look online for Ofsted-registered carers. A more affordable solution to higher-priced kids’ clubs, remember to ask what stipulations they have, such as you providing your child’s meals or whether you’re expected to pay if they are sick or you go away.

s part of the 2016 programme theme of ‘Pollinators’, the garden has opened a new Tropical Butterfly Experience, helped by a £10,000 donation from St Andrews Community Council.

James Hearsum, director, said: “The Botanic Garden is excited to be bringing a fantastic interactive experience to St Andrews in 2016. Butterflies, bees and other pollinators are critical to our food supply, our beautiful natural Scottish habitats and our enjoyment of summer, but they are under threat themselves. Not only will there be giant colourful butterflies from the tropics, but the garden will be working to develop conservation activities and plantings for our local endangered species. We are delighted that St Andrews Community Council is acting as a lead supporter of this exhibit.” 

Holiday play schemes/summer camps

Open most kids’ school bags towards the end of term and you’ll find half a dozen leaflets offering discounted daycare for specific age groups and boasting a number of fun activities. Usually catered to fit around school hours, they are often based on themes to appeal to your youngster, with football, science, dance and drama top of the hit-list. Run privately or by your local council, this competitively priced option can be booked on a daily or weekly basis and is a fun-filled way for your little one to meet new friends and gain skills in the process.

Working from home

Last, but by no means least, is the hope your boss might be sympathetic to your situation and agree to let you work from home every now and then. Explain your childcare struggle as soon as you can, asking if a day a week might be an option over the holidays before giving them time to think about it. If they agree, make sure you complete all tasks assigned to you on time – regardless of the distractions that come with a demanding child at home! Central & West Fife Show

Farming Fun for all the Family

entral and West Fife Show, will be held on Saturday 4th June with a strong focus on family fun. The show will allow the public to see a variety of animals including dairy and beef cattle, sheep, poultry, Clydesdale horses, ponies and show jumping. The main ring entertainment includes Clydesdale Horse Turnouts and Terrier Racing.

The show is continuing its strong focus on local food and crafts, with cookery demonstrations by Jenny Thomson from Courses for Cooks and the national heat of Young Farmers, Ready Steady Country Cook competition. The Food and Craft tent will also be showcasing local foods and craft from a variety of Scottish producers.

For children there will be a scarecrow competition, storytelling and a visit from the Royal Highland Education Trust showing how to milk a cow. Children will also have the opportunity to enter the design a

poster and decorate a cup cake competition – more details on the website.

Join RSPB Scotland for a wild day out the whole family can enjoy at Scotland’s Big Nature Festival this spring! The outdoor event is being held at Levenhall Links in Musselburgh on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 May. Visitors will be treated to a packed programme of wildlife talks, guided walks, bird ringing demonstrations and seabird cruises. There will also be a host of exciting activities like pond dipping, mini-beast hunts and bushcrafts for the kids!

Presenters from children’s TV will be joining the line-up over the weekend.

CBeebies presenters Rory Crawford and Ferne Corrigan will lead storytelling sessions for little ones and CBBC stars Leah and Ricky Boleto will be running workshops for budding television presenters of the future.

Levenhall Links is a beautiful site for nature in the heart of East Lothian, parts of which have been specifically created from reclaimed land for the benefit of wildlife.

Hundreds of birds, mammals and insects have been spotted there including: oystercatchers, curlews, redshanks and redpolls, as well as a raft of butterflies, moths and brown hares.

Kingsgate welcomes new toy store to shopping centre

hildren in Dunfermline and the surrounding areas are in toy joy with the arrival of The Entertainer toyshop, which officially opened in March at Kingsgate Shopping Centre.

It brings a huge range of fun; from board games, arts & crafts to kids favourites like Star Wars, Lego and Disney.

t’s Play Time at the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy as our young students gather all their creativity, imaginations, whacky ideas and silly suggestions to devise and improvise a series of plays to perform at the end of term. For many children, this is the chance to show their confidence, their dramatic moves: for others, their clear voices and wonderful facial expressions, and for many the considerable achievement of being able to stand on a stage and join in with the others. The students will be offered a variety of themes, from Animal Olympics to French restaurants, from Egyptian museums to Parties on the beach, and from these ideas they will create together some fantastic entertainment for their parents and friends. 

How to get your little ones involved in sports clubs and which outdoor activities to choose from

ost parents agree that getting young children involved in sport from a young age will help them to keep fit and get into the habit of enjoying regular exercise.

Outdoor sports are a great way for children to get some fresh air and have fun with their friends. But how do you choose which sport is right for your child?

Here are five outdoor options they will love: 1. Football Children can start from reception age and there are clubs that offer coaching during the holidays for children from five to 11 years. These are usually a morning or afternoon class where young children are introduced to the basic skills of the sport.

2. Rugby Don’t panic: kids’ rugby is not about scrums, mauls and tackling or complicated rules. Children are encouraged to play a simple, non-contact game together and the focus is on passing and running skills. Most clubs start youngsters off at the age of six or seven.

3. Tennis Children from three can learn the basic skills of the game using smaller courts and nets and with childsized rackets. Some clubs will also have squash and badminton courts.

4. Hockey The game is much gentler than that for adults and sticks and pitches are smaller. Some clubs offer “Quicksticks”, suitable from seven, which is a four-a-side game that can be played anywhere and uses a bigger ball for safety.

5. Multi-Sports Not sure which sport to choose? Look for multi-sports sessions by local authorities where kids can try a variety of sports.
