Editor’s Letter Dear readers I hope you had a lovely summer holiday and are glad to be back on the school run! We didn’t go away but enjoyed a few days out with friends and a few days in the garden with the paddling pool! We also met up with the Editors of Families Gloucestershire and Families Oxfordshire and their children at the Cotswold Wildlife Park (see photo) to try out the new sky maze which recently opened. This is the season of Halloween and Bonfires. One to one support for children and young people Local children’s charity Mentor Link is dedicated to providing one to one mentoring support to children and young people in schools. The mentoring is focused on helping young people deal with social and emotional issues and improve their engagement in learning, self-esteem and relationships with others. All of our mentors are professionally recruited, trained and supported in their role and are dedicated to supporting young people whatever the difficulties they face. The mentors come into school each week for up to an hour for each child to befriend, support and listen to them in a quiet and confidential session. We are always looking for more support from parents, schools, governors and the community to support our fundraising, awareness raising and volunteering. Droitwich Spa Salt Fest Salt Fest celebrates Droitwich Spa’s unique salt heritage. The event takes place on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th September and is a great day out for families. You can meet the Romans; take a trip on the canal; browse the stalls; have a go at activities or enjoy the live music. On Saturday why not visit Salt Alley to see demonstrations of salt making or models of vehicles powered by salt! The Dog Show on Sunday is great fun so why not bring along your dog.

Guide for depression Around one in ten young people will experience depression, stress or anxiety by the time they reach 18. This summer sees the launch of an essential guide for parents who might be worried that their child is depressed. On behalf of charity the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust, the guide offers answers to all the most frequently asked questions parents have plus guidance on what to do next. ‘Parents are usually the first to notice that their child’s behaviour has changed,’ said Jackie Williams of the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust. ‘Often they feel powerless to help, particularly if their child is shutting themselves off from their family and the wider world. Restaurant Reviews New wagamama opens in Hereford The Japanese restaurant wagamama recently opened in July at the Old Market Shopping Centre in Hereford creating 35 jobs for the local area and is the first within 40 miles. We were invited to review the restaurant which we were delighted to do. The staff were really friendly and Jess, our waitress, was lovely and looked after us very well. We visited on a Saturday lunch time and it was very busy but lunch appeared fairly rapidly and was delicious and very fresh. The children’s menu is extensive and was apparently named by the Soil Association as one of the best in the UK for choice and quality. Daniel chose Chicken Katsu which was bread crumbed chicken with rice, vegetables and a choice of 2 sauces and for dessert chose vanilla pod icecream. The alternative is natural fruit ice lollies. I decided to try the lollipop prawn kushiyaki (skewered prawns marinated in lemongrass, lime and chilli) whilst my husband opted for the pork ribs with barbecue sauce. We shared both which were delicious. For the main course, I chose the teriyaki beef soba which includes noodles, mangetout, red chillies, onions, beansprouts and bok choi, coriander and sesame seeds and my husband had the wagamama ramen which included chicken, fish, prawns, vegetables and noodles in a miso and ginger soup. PizzaExpress has the kids sorted with its Piccolo Menu and Kids Pizza Making Parties We visited Pizza Express in Stratford upon Avon in August to sample the children’s menu. The waiter was charming and couldn’t be more helpful. Daniel chose dough balls as a starter which were accompanied by tomatoes, cucumber and red pepper. He doesn’t like red pepper but he polished off the rest! While he was waiting, our waiter provided him with colouring pencils, puzzles, stickers and a chef’s hat. The piccolo menu was re-launched last year with help from The Children’s Food Trust, encouraging children to pick fresh ingredients including gluten-free dishes. With the new ‘Create Your Own’ feature, children can pick and choose ingredients to add in or leave out, putting them in charge of their own meal. There is a choice of pasta or pizza and Daniel opted for pasta bolognese which was very tasty whilst we enjoyed garlic bread and pizzas. Sadly we didn’t have time for dessert but there is a good choice plus a bambinoccino for all children to finish off (frothed milk with chocolate powder). If you are looking to keep your child busy during school holidays or for a birthday party then you could try a Pizza Making Party. Children from the age of four to 11 are transformed into mini pizza chefs, getting to stretch and toss their own pizza base, before topping it with their favourite ingredients. Once they’ve enjoyed their culinary creations, they will get to play games with a twist, such as Pin the Moustache on the Pizzaiolo. Everything is organised, from invites and a personal party host, through to unlimited squash, party games and even a balloon and certificate to take home. How to create a healthy dialogue with your school or nursery By Hannah Hunter Research shows that the better your relationship with your child’s school, the more they will enjoy learning and do well. However it’s often impossible to know what really goes on at school – children are not very forthcoming when it comes to recounting their day. If they do raise any issues, or if you sense something is amiss, it can be difficult to know how to broach the subject with school. As both a parent and a primary teacher, I know how hard it can be to strike the right balance. If you’re meeting a teacher outside of parents’ evening or class surgeries, it’s because there is a problem. These meetings can easily become tense, with both ‘sides’ on the defensive. Here are a few tips for successful communication: Assume the best of your child’s teacher They are trained professionals who understand the curriculum and child development. They ultimately want the same as you – a happy child who is learning. Let teachers know if there are problems at home You don’t have to go into graphic detail, just tell them if something’s happened which may affect your child’s behaviour. Please don’t assume that your child always tells the truth! After all, teachers don’t automatically believe what your child tells them about home. Remain calm and neutral “Little Johnny came home rather upset about xxx, I wondered what your take on it is…”, rather than “Why did you shout at Little Johnny like that?” Mediation If you have issues with a teacher’s conduct, and feel upset or angry, it’s best that an additional member of staff is present. Talk to the teacher first Even negative feedback is appreciated. Going directly to the head is a bit like them phoning your boss whenever your child misbehaves! Remember that teachers are human They sometimes make mistakes, so try to forgive them for it.

Shanghai-style maths hubs aim to improve standards in England The government’s £11 million programme of ‘maths hubs’ will be rolled out to 32 schools in England this September, aiming to improve maths results by using a Chinese model of teaching. The programme is to be developed by academics from Shanghai and England. Central to this will be an exchange programme, where teachers from Shanghai will visit the ‘hub’ schools to run ‘masterclasses’ for local teachers. Two maths teachers from each school will also work in China for at least a month to learn first-hand some of their teaching approaches, which will then be passed on to other local schools. https://www.ncetm.org.uk/resources/44071 6

Parent Helper Helping out in class can be fun and rewarding. Research shows that having a parent who volunteers improves a child’s experience of school. Organise a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check (Disclosures in Scotland) - you can then volunteer regularly or as a one-off.
School Trips If you’ve had the DBS check, this one is great for ingratiating yourself. On what is invariably a stressful day, a responsible parent helping out can be a lifesaver!
Use your Expertise Maybe there’s a school club that would fit your skill set or interests. If not, you could talk to the class or even do an assembly. September – October 2014

Join the PTA Fostering closer home-school links, the PTA usually organise the school’s fundraising projects, from fetes to family quiz nights. Run by committee, they may include ‘class reps’ who pass on information from other parents in the class.
School Governors Comprising parent governors and other community members, this group of elected volunteers helps to make management decisions, such as running buildings and budgets, supporting staff and setting discipline standards. It can be time-consuming, particularly if the school’s results are getting worse or it’s going through a big change like appointing a new head teacher, or joining with another school.
Parent Council member Some schools have a Parent council, where parents meet to share ideas that are fed back to the school governors. This is great if you’re too busy to commit to PTA or Governors, but want to have an input. Fussy eating Fussy eating affects 8 out of 10 UK families. A recent survey on fussy eating has found that over 80% of UK parents have children who are fussy eaters. The research, commissioned by Abbott, has also shown that 69% of parents worry that their child is not getting the nutrition they need and a further 60% said their child’s fussy eating habits make them feel frustrated. The emotional impact of fussy eating on parents is significant, with 25% fretting that other people might think they are a bad parent and 27% worrying that their child might go hungry at school or at a friend’s house. Fussy eating is a widespread issue in the UK, affecting many families and parents of fussy eaters will go to extreme lengths in order to get their children to eat well. Bribing children with dessert or sweets (34%), hiding vegetables in other foods (33%) and threatening to take away treats or fun activities (21%) were some of the most common tactics used by parents. Netali Levi, a Clinical Psychologist who works with children who are fussy eaters and their parents believes that “managing mealtimes to make them enjoyable, reducing stress (both yours and the child’s) and understanding your child’s hunger signals are all key to success”. Netali also advises that “It’s important to realise that there are some aspects of the situation where you may have less control.You need to find what works for you and your child but generally speaking, by involving them in the process of shopping, cooking and preparing food, gradually introducing new flavours and textures, and rewarding progress, it should be possible for you to navigate this tricky phase and get them back to healthy eating habits.” For more advice and tips on tackling fussy eating, visit: www.fussyeaters.co.uk, where you can download a unique 12-week “back on track” eating plan, developed by Netali and a nutritionist. Education Barnardo’s community support service for children with disabilities celebrates its first year and is set to expand further! Families with children with disabilities from across Worcestershire gathered in Wyre Forest to celebrate a special first birthday with support workers, volunteers and council commissioners. The party marked the first anniversary of Barnardo’s Worcestershire Community Short Breaks service which provides children with disabilities and their families with regular, planned community-based short breaks. Through this service children have an opportunity to enjoy time away from home, try new activities, make new friendships and enrich their lives. Many of the children or young people are mobile and healthy but have a learning disability or are on the autistic spectrum which means they may be excluded from many usual activities and need supervision and help. Some children have a physical disability, and/or health needs which means they need additional help with their care. Latest news from Sytchampton Endowed First School After a period of consultation and with the support of the Local Authority, the Governing Body of Sytchampton, has unanimously decided to change the age status from First school to Primary. This means that from September 2015 we will be offering education from 4 – 11years. The main reason for this is our unique geographical location between Droitwich and Stourport and parental voice. We will in future offer pupils transition to Middle schools in Droitwich or Stourport High School. This is a very exciting time for us and we hope to grow our school and make use of all our excellent facilities. The wicker beast is taking shape at Abberley Hall School at Great Witley and will form part of pupils’ tribute to their retiring headmaster. John Walker steps down this term after 18 years’ service at the helm of the independent school, which has 300 pupils aged from three to 13. “I have always had a keen interest in conservation matters, particularly wildlife issues, so I asked for this sculpture to be created. I hope it will raise the profile of the plight of endangered species such as the rhino,” commented John. “The project also offers our children a unique opportunity to work on such a large scale and learn the art of willow weaving,” John added. Final year pupils are spending a week on the ‘green art’ project, working with Worcestershire wicker artists Paul and Steph Simmons of ‘Willowcraft and Woodlands’. The finished animal will be three and a half metres long and one and a half metres tall in total. As part of its links with conservation work, Abberley Hall also arranges an annual trip for pupils to South Africa which includes a stay at the Weenen Game Park where the youngsters view antelope, zebra and giraffe, as well as black and white rhino. www.abberleyhall.co.uk 8

Can tutoring help your child? By Hannah Hunter Computer games are OK! Films and computer games ‘boost children’s vocabulary’, according to recent research from the team at Oxford University Press. Watching films such as Despicable Me and The Lego Movie, and playing computer games such as Minecraft can have a positive impact on children’s use of language, as they start to use unfamiliar words following exposure to these films and games. A study carried out by the Oxford University Press found that school children under the age of 13 regularly used little-known terms such as ‘ocelot’, ‘spawn’ and ‘portal’ in their written work because of the influence of popular culture. The word ‘minion’ from the movie Despicable Me was actually declared children’s word of the year! ‘Concerns have been voiced that the digital age is having a negative impact on children’s imaginations,’ said Kate Nation, professor of experimental psychology at Oxford University. ‘These stories show that children’s imaginations are very much alive and that they use a variety of influences in creative ways.’

Paying for extra tuition has become very popular over the last few years. According to a poll last year by the Sutton Trust, nearly one in four 11-16 year olds at state schools in England and Wales said that their parents had paid for them to have extra help with their lessons.
So should you hire a tutor? If you don’t, will they be at a disadvantage when it comes to tests like the 11+ or Common Entrance exam, if everyone else seems to be sending their children for extra lessons?
Why get a tutor? With stress on getting good grades now starting at KS1 and 2 with SATs children are expected to achieve from a very young age. Schools cannot provide the one-to-one support, which can provide valuable help in some instances. If a child is struggling with a subject area, or missing knowledge that is holding them back (e.g. after time off school), then a tutor is a great idea. If your child has additional needs, like dyslexia or ADHD, a tutor can provide valuable targeted support (if they have a statement, your child may be entitled to one-to-one support in school).

Education Perhaps your child is having trouble getting the C-grade in Maths/ English GCSE that they need for further education. Maybe they want to study a subject not offered at their school. Interview preparation for University is also a popular reason to hire a tutor, particularly for Oxbridge interviews. However, if their problem is lack of motivation, then a tutor might not be the best idea – if they don’t want to work, you’re just wasting your money! Tutoring very young children can also be a problem – they can be so tired after a full school day and adding tutoring on top can wipe them out completely. There’s a lot of pressure on high achievers too - if they are doing well at school, why add needless stress?
When is it best to get help? It’s best to start sooner rather than later. For example, if you’re hiring someone to help after the GCSE mocks in February there’s a limited amount they can achieve – if you think tuition will benefit your child, start from September of Year 11 onwards.
How to find a good tutor If you can get someone who is personally recommended, then obviously that is the best option. Make sure you check their references and DBS checks, and interview them before you hire them. It sounds obvious, but they need to get along with your child, as well as looking good on paper. Study centres and tuition agencies will ensure that their staff are safety checked and appropriately qualified, with some agencies only employing graduates in key subject areas.
How much will it cost? According to the good schools guide, an hour’s tuition can cost parents anything from £30 to well beyond. If this is beyond your budget, you could team up with friends for group tuition. Study centres may be more affordable – children learn in small groups, and they often accept childcare vouchers toward payment.
Help for Free Your child’s school may already offer older revision classes – make sure you’re aware of what’s available. There are excellent online resources to support at home learning – for example the BBC bitesize website has games and revision subjects up to GCSE level. Launch of free school meals for all infants From September all Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children will be entitled to a free and healthy lunch at school. According to Schools Minister, David Laws, free school meals encourage healthy eating and their pilots have shown that ‘children in schools that offer universal free school meals are academically months ahead of their peers.’ The move has been welcomed by the Child Poverty Action Group who campaign for the abolition of child poverty in the UK. For a start, after school clubs give kids the chance to let off steam outside of the classroom. When you consider that in many countries around the world, kids don’t even start school until 6 or 7 years old, a full day in the classroom for youngsters can be a big ask. That’s why an alternative to the three R’s can be hugely rewarding. As clinical psychologist Dr Julie Fraser, puts it: “It’s an opportunity for kids to explore different talents. Not everyone is brilliant at academic subjects and it’s a chance for your kids to shine outside of the classroom.” She adds: “Learning a new skill can also affect what happens in school – kids feel more confident and able to try new tasks.” Certainly all the research shows this to be the case. Every leading study into extra curricular activities demonstrates that academic grades actually improve when kids participate in outside school clubs. One 2005 study from the US actually showed that kids who attended clubs performed much better in maths and verbal reasoning tests than kids who didn’t. But kids clubs are not only great for improving academic levels but for developing important life skills too. “It’s brilliant for developing social skills, dealing with new environments, talking to different adults and mixing with different children,” says Dr Fraser. “But best of all, after school clubs are confidence building.” Team sports like football, rugby, and netball are not only brilliant for keeping kids active but also helping them learn team work where they can begin to appreciate what’s good for the whole team, rather than just thinking of themselves. Competitive sports are also great for learning difficult life lessons like being a gracious winner – and loser. But for team building clubs with a less competitive edge, you could consider Woodcraft Folk, Brownies and Scouts.

Clubs and Classes Learning a musical instrument is great for discovering the art of practice, patience and persistence. Drama clubs are great for shy kids who learn to find their voice singing and acting alongside others, while ballet and dance is great for kids to learn discipline and self-expression. The list is endless. There are clubs for almost anything you can imagine. Archery, chess, horse riding, computer clubs, film making and even circus skills are all proving popular alongside the more traditional arts and crafts, swimming, tennis and kung fu. There are clubs for nature lovers run by the Woodland Trust, BMX biking for tots, and even kids yoga and tai chi. There’s so many to choose from, it’s tempting to try them all but it’s also important not to overburden kids with too many activities. Frantically driving from one after school club to the next seems to be missing the point. New skills, team work and confidence building aside, the most important thing to think about when deciding which club to choose is surely the fun factor.
