Starting with the fire and fury of Mussorgsky’s depiction of a witches’ Sabbath in ‘A Night on the Bare Mountain’ (included in the BBC’s Ten Pieces) startlingly orchestrated by his friend and fellow Russian composer RimskyKorsakov, and ending with Debussy’s gorgeous sonic seascape ‘La Mer’, they will also perform Ligeti’s eerie study in extreme quiet ‘Lontano’. George Benjamin conducts his own ‘Dance Figures’ and Tamara Stefanovich performs Ravel’s astonishingly virtuosic Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. Tune in to times tables The Department of Education will be carrying out tests to check whether eight and nine-year-olds know their times tables. This was trialled in some primary schools in England during March 2018 before being rolled out nationally. This will become mandatory in 2020 for all year 4 students. The Guardian February 2018 Mr NK (Clifford Harding) founder of the Tunes Times Tables Programme learnt his times tables at the age of 29 after being challenged by a pupil on an 8 times tables question. At the time Mr NK was a school mentor and felt embarrassed that he was unable to answer the question. He returned home to ask his son this same question and he was unable to answer the question too. Mr NK felt surely, he could find a method to learn the times table in a quick and easy way injecting FUN and EXCITEMENT into the learning process… … Tunes Times Tables was created and has been thriving since 2008.

Mischief Makers – the 2018 Summer Reading Challenge Children's reading can 'dip' during the summer holidays if they don't have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure. The annual Summer Reading Challenge helps get three quarters of a million children into libraries each year to maintain their reading skills and confidence. 2018 will be the 20th challenge. It’s open primary school children of every ability. This year the challenge will focus on the theme of mischief and pranks, as inspired by the muchloved Beano comic, which celebrates its 80th

Volunteer for Home-Start and make a difference to a family in your community Here are your questions answered... What is Home-Start? Home-Start is a national charity with schemes in hundreds of local communities. They recruit and train volunteers to help families with young children. Their volunteers, who know about being a parent, support other parents by visiting them in their own homes for a couple of hours each week. They also run special family groups and hold social events for families.
What kind of families could I be helping? All kinds of families can ďŹ nd it hard to cope for all sorts of reasons, maybe because of illness or disability of a child or because of postnatal illness, bereavement or loneliness. Home-Start supports any parent with young children who asks for help. They come from all walks of life.
Can my support and friendship really make a difference? The early years before children go off to school are vital in a child’s life, and parents have a key role in creating security for their child. Sometimes they need a little help doing this. Your help.
As a volunteer what would I actually do? Usually, you visit a family in their own home once a week for a couple of hours. You may ďŹ nd the parents simply need someone to talk to, or they may need more practical support such as cooking, reading to the children, going to the park, or ďŹ nding out about local services.
Do I need any qualiďŹ cations to be a volunteer? The only real ‘qualiďŹ cation’ is experience of bringing up children. Friendliness and a caring attitude are essential as well as an understanding of the pressures of parenting.
Do volunteers get any training? Yes, Home-Start give high priority to the recruitment, induction, training and support of all their volunteers. You will be supported during your training throughout your contact with families. HomeStart’s highly rated Preparation Course is also accredited by the Open College Network.
What would I get out of volunteering for Home-Start? Knowing you have helped; a boost to your self-esteem and conďŹ dence; maybe even a foot on the ladder towards a job. www.homestartbirmingham.co.uk

A study funded by the Department of Education has found that the provision of early education to children aged 2 has a signiďŹ cant positive effect on their language and socio-emotional development when they reach age 3. This is regardless of their family’s level of social or economic advantage. The report found that no matter how rich and how high the quality of a child’s home environment is or if early childcare is provided by relatives, friends or non-Ofsted registered carers, it was more beneďŹ cial for a 2 year old’s development to have spent time in early education and care in a group-based setting, such as a nursery or playgroup, or with a registered childminder. Interestingly, the report found that increased time spent with registered childminders at age 2 is associated with positive outcomes in terms of verbal development for children at age 3. Also, spending time in group settings is associated with a similar level of beneďŹ t for social and behavioural outcomes. The Study of Early Education and Development (SEED) is following the progress of almost 6,000 children across England from ages 2 to 7. The study investigates child development using a range of criterion including: Cognitive Development (e.g. verbal and non-verbal ability); and Socio-Emotional Development (e.g. prosocial behaviour, behavioural self-regulation and cooperation). Preparing your child for school Varying the speed and direction of movement activities also develops spatial awareness. Your child can have fun developing fine motor skills at home with every day activities such as using pegs and scissors, bead threading, button fastening, moulding play-dough, and painting.
Exploring and investigating
If your child is starting school in September, you may be wondering how best to prepare them for this big new adventure! Firstly, don’t worry if they can’t read a word or write their own name. The ability to interact, communicate and exercise a degree of independence is actually far more important than reading or writing skills when a child starts school. In fact, research shows a link between strong personal, social and emotional skills in Reception and higher levels of attainment in the future. So if you want to strengthen your child’s skills in these areas, here are some tips:
11+ VERBAL REASONING VOCABULARY FLASH CA ARDS Expand your child’’ss anton nym and synonym knowledge and achieve a higher g 11+ sco ore A comprehensive vocabulary resource with child-friendly definitions and a list of synonym ms www.vocabularyflashcardss.co.uk
Often the most effective learning occurs when a child is left to his own devices, without nicely-prepared resources and prescriptive instructions about how to do something. Present your child with a large cardboard box (and the opportunity to access other resources/toys). See what he or she does with it. All the above skills can be naturally weaved into your everyday lives. Enjoy and treasure these precious last few weeks/months with your child at home, and keep the above tips in mind to promote a positive start to your child’s school life. Sarah McKinlay is a mother and school teacher with qualifications in psychology and can provide support and strategies to give your child a happy transition to school. For more information, visit www.bounceparental.co.uk
Independence The aim is for children to be responsible for themselves, their belongings and their actions at school. Help your child learn to get dressed, put on their coats/shoes, go to the toilet, tidy away toys and select their own activity resources.
Communication and language Research demonstrates that competent speakers develop into competent readers and writers; without competent spoken language, learning to read and write is more difficult. Language allows children to interact with the world. Being able to communicate their message effectively is satisfying and develops their esteem and self-confidence. Model good spoken language, with correct pronunciation of sounds, and encourage your child to speak in full sentences using an expanding vocabulary.
Sharing and interaction The more opportunities your child gets to interact and learn how to share and take turns, the less of a shock it will be when he or she starts school. However, expect this to be an on-going process. Allow your child lots of opportunities to play with siblings and organise lots of play dates to practice these skills.
Respect for behavioural boundaries At school, behavioural expectations and boundaries are likely to include: Listening the first time they are asked to pay attention; keeping hands/feet to themselves; sharing and taking turns; looking after things; tidying away; being kind to others. You can reinforce these expectations at home.
Physical (gross and fine motor skills) All activities require some sort of physicality, whether it be large (gross) or small (fine) movements. Gross motor skills are developed when hopping, skipping, running, jumping, galloping, balancing, pedalling a bike, using a scooter, climbing, throwing, catching, and kicking a ball.

How to seize the summer with Explore Learning The summer holidays are a great time for families to spend time together. However, it can also be a time when children forget some of the skills they have mastered at school. Here are some ideas from Charlotte Gater, Head of Curriculum at Explore Learning, on how to seize the summer. Start a blog Give your child a little note book to jots ideas down whilst you are out and about, then write up what you’ve done. Take lots of pictures as these are a great tool to help children who ďŹ nd writing tricky. Encourage them to describe what is happening in the picture to get their creativity owing.
Play some games These are great for so many reasons, from developing language to improving memory skills. Need some new games? Have a scavenger hunt in local charity shops to see who in the family can ďŹ nd the best game.
Send a postcard Let your friends and family know what you’ve been up to. They’re only short so are a wonderful way to get a bit of writing going during the holidays. If your child is reluctant to write, then why not try a postcard app like ‘By Post’?
Tuition To keep your children progressing over the summer, a tuition centre is a great option. Prevent the battle ground of getting children to do work at home and get them along to a tuition centre where there are lots of other children getting involved.
Read, read and read some more Pop a book in your bag so you can use this when travelling on days out. Explore will be uploading weekly activities that you can complete with your child to help keep them engaged with what they are reading. Visit explorelearning.co.uk/summer to ďŹ nd out more.

Helping your child avoid the language word gap An Oxford University Press (OUP) report published in April revealed that both primary and secondary schools teachers are seeing an increasing number of children with a limited vocabulary – a word gap. Why the Word Gap Matters: Oxford Language Report found that without enough words a child will not only find it difficult to understand instructions at school, but also to play and communicate with others. Over 1,300 teachers surveyed reported that the word gap is not only affecting children’s achievements at school but also that it can have a damaging impact on self-esteem and a child’s ability to make friends. In the report, OUP asked leading educational experts and teachers to offer their thoughts on the word gap and to share practical ideas on building children’s vocabulary and sparking their interest in learning new words. Here are just a few:
Sharing the reading experience In the OUP survey, 93% of primary school teachers said that a root cause of the word gap is that children aren’t spending enough time reading for pleasure. Reading is an important way for children to learn vocabulary as they are more likely to come across new words in books than they will in spoken language. Encourage your child by reading aloud and sharing picture books, traditional tales, or non-fiction books when they are young. Help them read as widely as possible as they develop their own reading skills. If you are looking for inspiration, you can find booklists for all ages/ interests at www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home.
Talk, talk, talk! It goes without saying that parents talk to their children all the time. But research with very young children shows that if we use richer language, a child’s vocabulary can increase dramatically . Name and describe objects rather than falling back on pronouns (like ‘this’ and ‘that’). Try using alternative words for the same thing – instead of saying ‘It’s hot’, say ‘It’s scorching’ or ‘It’s blistering.’
Pick up the dictionary It’s helpful if your child has access to a dictionary and a thesaurus at the right level for them, written in language they can understand. A dictionary and thesaurus at home and at school are vital tools for developing and enriching children’s language and helping to improve their spelling. To choose the best dictionary or thesaurus for your child and help them with basic dictionary skills, you can visit the dictionary selector at www.oxfordowl.co.uk/home/reading-owl/experthelp/choosing-dictionaries
Check for understanding In the OUP report, educational psychologist Jean Gross (CBE) explains that she assessed children of all ages and abilities using a test that asked them to say what “on purpose” meant. Very few could do this, despite often hearing “You did that on purpose” at home and at school. Jean suggests that we should never assume that children know the meaning of even simple words. Make sure you check for understanding. To read the full report, visit oxford.ly/wordgap David Reedy explores this study in Why the Word Gap Matters: Oxford Language Report, page 14
Have fun with words Create an excitement around discovering and talking about new words together. Tell your child that it’s fine not to know what a word means – we are all learning new words all the time. When your child comes across a new word in a book encourage them to talk to you about what the word might mean. Encourage them to use the other words and sentences around it to try to work out the meaning. In the report, Why Closing the Word Gap Matters, teacher Janine Wooldridge suggests that older children reading on their own could be encouraged to write unknown words on a card bookmark for you to discuss and look up in a dictionary together later. Talk about other ways you could use the new word – give them some examples of sentences using that word and encourage them to think of their own sentences. Start something amazing this autumn and audition for the National Youth Choirs! Boys in School Year 5 and girls in School Year 6 on 1 September 2018 can audition this Autumn for NYCGB’s National Youth Boys’ Choir and National Youth Girls’ Choir. The upper age limit for both choirs is School Year 10. Children don’t need any singing grades to audition, but they should have a clean, clear and tuneful singing voice, and show enthusiasm and readiness to learn. The audition lasts 10 minutes. Candidates sing a song of their own choice with piano (an accompanist is provided), an unaccompanied song from a set list, and do musicianship tests. It might sound daunting, but NYCGB want candidates to feel relaxed. The best way to help your child prepare is to visit www.nycgb.org.uk/audition which has information, a cartoon guide and links to set pieces and sample tests. Booking for auditions will open via NYCGB’s website on Thursday 27 September, and the auditions will take
place at venues nationwide in October and November. Auditions cost £35 and NYCGB’s Financial Assistance Scheme (1 in 5 members currently benefit) can support that cost, and subsequent membership costs. If you get in? There’s up to two residential courses a year, in the school holidays, concerts, recordings – and even music videos! Here’s a boy who did his first course this Spring:“ It was amazing full stop! There were loads of people at the same level as me so I didn’t feel left out. The singing was really great and I learned some great skills. The socials helped us to build teamwork and life skills too. I can’t wait until the next course.” www.nycgb.org.uk www.facebook.com/nycgbmusic www.twitter.com/nycgb www.instagram.com/nycgb www.youtube.com/nycgbvideo

Make it a summer to remember! By Claire Winter
The summer holidays will soon be here! While our children are looking forward to it, many of us parents are wondering how we are going to juggle work, play, and activities in a way that works for the whole family. Children love days out, but what they really value is having fun with their parents. We have put together some ideas to help your family get the most out of the summer break.
Get the kids to do the planning! Ask your children to write a bucket list of things they would like to do during the holidays. They can create a scrapbook or document it on a computer or tablet. Get them to research where the places are and the cost of visiting. Give them extra credit for finding free or discounted activities – such as watching the Birmingham Bears play cricket at Edgbaston (kids go free, adults get a discount on advance payments using voucher code VISIT2018). How about taking a wander round a free museum or art gallery? There’s Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery in Chamberlain Square; the MAC in Cannon Hill Park has regular art exhibitions; Lapworth Museum of Geology has free entry; Museum of the Jewellery Quarter’s temporary exhibition space is free to enter; and don't forget Dudley Museum, Archives and Local History Centre, Tipton Road.
Get outside How about treating the family to a day outdoors at Hatton Farm, or try National Trust properties such as Packwood House and Baddesley Clinton which has an animal themed natural play trail this summer. There’s also the open-aired Black Country Living Museum; the 15 acres of beautiful landscaped greenery at Birmingham Botanical Gardens; Hoar Park’s 141 acres of countryside to explore; and for some live outdoor entertainment there’s the Big Family Festival weekend in Sutton Coldfield, 27 – 29 July.

Take a class Summer holiday camps and workshops can teach your children new skills in a fun, informal setting, which will also help their brains stay active and build their confidence. Take a look at the schemes run at camps such as Just Camps Solihull, Aspire Sports, Phys-Kids, Premier Active, and Ackers Adventure. If your child is a fan of the arts you could check out the Barber Institute of Fine Arts’ summer programme, The Core Theatre's Summer School and The String Club's Holiday Club.
A day out at Hampton Court This summer, how about traveling a little further afield for a day visit to Hampton Court Palace to meet some of the biggest characters in English history. The staff are friendly and informative throughout. At every turn there are fascinating facts to learn about how the Tudors, Stuarts and the Hanoverians lived, ate, fell in love, worked, dressed, had fun, and how their lives ended. When we visited we were absorbed by the stories told via the free audio guide (child-friendly versions available), and engrossed in the art, décor, furniture and architecture of the day. The maze was a huge winner with our kids at the end! At 2 hours’ drive from Birmingham, it makes a worthwhile visit manageable in a day.

Out & about this summer
Unpack some historic holiday fun this summer! When the sun’s shining, sometimes you just need to step outside and have some good old-fashioned fun! Enter Black Country Living Museum – set over 26 acres with an entire period village to explore. Their summer holiday programme (21 Jul-2 Sep, 10am-5pm) is jam-packed with rib-tickling traditional entertainment and just a touch of drama as characters prepare for some fun in the sun! Step inside the homes and shops of the past and you’ll find characters rushing to prepare their picnic baskets full of traditional treats to enjoy outside, or packing their suitcases for a good old British seaside holiday. Swap out your TV for the sweet sounds of vintage music as you gather the family around the wireless in the newly-opened Gripton’s Radio Store, set on the Museum’s 1930s-themed street. From wartime weddings to a search for notorious criminals, on selected days throughout the summer visitors will be able to watch ‘pop up’ drama unfold on the streets. Plus, throughout August snap-happy visitors will also have the opportunity to dress in vintage get-up at the Museum’s Photography Parlour – now that’s one for the family album! Don’t forget, the Museum is open until 8pm every Friday in August with some extra special entertainment. www.bclm.com
