welcome I’ve been inspired today. I’m often inspired and it’s usually young people who make me feel this way. Today was no exception. I was privileged to watch a bunch of kids, one of my own included, take part in a music competition. They were all at different stages of learning: some were accomplished, others just starting out. They weren’t all confident and some had never done it before. But one thing they all had was bags of courage and a determination to have a go. They also all had parents who saw the value in extra curricular activities and the life skills that such classes bring.

I recently read an inspiring piece of writing about why a mother sends her daughter to dance – you may have seen it. It’s not that she necessarily thinks her daughter will be a dancer but rather that she will learn a whole host of things that cannot be measured in a classroom. She will learn to practice and not to give up, to deal with disappointment when she doesn’t get the part or win the trophy, to make life-long friendships and memories. They are the same reasons why our kids join sports teams, why they sing in a choir or join the scouts.

And behind it all you’ll find teachers and volunteers who give loads of extra time to make sure our kids have the opportunity to develop their confidence as well as their skills. When I pay for my daughter’s classes I know I’m buying much more than piano, dance or drama skills – I’m investing in her future.

So have a fabulous summer break – and I hope your children get a chance to try out some of the amazing activities on offer right around our region.

Summer in the Alps

Councils issue £8.8 million in fines for unauthorised school absences Local authorities in England issued nearly £9 million worth of fines for unauthorised school absences in the last school year alone.

Almost 150,000 families were served with penalties for taking their children out of school without permission during the 2015-16 academic year. This equated to a minimum of £8.8 million in fines.

The figures, compiled by law firm Simpson Millar using Freedom of Information requests, found that local authorities in the North West issued the most fines, penalising 25,000 families.

The individual councils issuing the most penalty notices were Suffolk County Council (5,668), Lancashire County Council (5,654), Bradford City Council (4,985), Manchester City Council (4,579) and Hampshire County Council (4,337).

Separate figures revealed that nearly 20,000 people were taken to court for failing to ensure their child attended school in 2015.

The figures were released against the backdrop of a Supreme Court ruling against dad John Platt, who fought a legal campaign after being issued a £60 fine, which was later doubled to £120, after taking his daughter out of school for a family holiday.

Mr Platt argued that his daughter had still attended school ‘regularly’ as required but the Supreme Court panel said that Parliament’s intention was that the word ‘regularly’ in this context meant “in accordance with the rules prescribed by the school”.

Dogs could help children improve their reading skills Many studies have shown that improving a child’s reading skills will tend to lead to a greater overall academic success and better life chances.

There have been numerous schemes and initiatives aimed at boosting both interest in and aptitudes for reading but one of the most novel involves bringing four-legged helpers into the classroom.

The practice originated in the US in 1999 with the Reading Education Assistance Dogs (READ) scheme. It was slower to catch on in the UK but has gained traction recently, with the Kennel Club’s Bark and Read Foundation being at the forefront.

According to the Kennel Club, reading to dogs has been proven to help children develop literacy skills and build confidence, through “both the calming effect the dogs’ presence has on children and the fact that the dog will listen to the children read without being judgemental or critical”.

Actress Zoe Wanamaker CBE, a supporter of the scheme, said: “That is why the Kennel Club’s Bark & Read project is such an inspiring idea, as we all know that dogs are great listeners and won’t judge if we stumble over a word.”

Study finds kids who spend more time on social media are less happy overall

Researchers from the University of Sheffield have found that children who spend more time on social media feel less happy in most aspects of their lives.

The study found that spending just one hour a day on social networks reduces the chances of a child being completely happy their life by around 14%.

That was three times higher than the estimated adverse effect of coming from a single-parent household and greater than the negative impact of playing truant.

Kids who spent more time on social media reported being less happy about school, their appearance and their family, although they did feel happier about their friendships.

Researcher Philip Powell said: “The problem with making comparisons in online media is that people tend to portray themselves in an idealised state. There is evidence that people think other people are happier than them after interacting with them online because we tend to post videos and chat that presents this positive image.”

He also suggested that spending longer on social media could also expose young people to a greater risk of cyber-bullying.

Special Day for Brackenfield School as they celebrate their 40th Anniversary Brackenfield School on Duchy Road, Harrogate celebrated their 40th Anniversary on Saturday 20th May. Around 400 past and present Brackenfield families and staff enjoyed mingling and recounting their Brackenfield memories from the past 40 years.

Brackenfield was founded in 1977 by Margaret Sutcliffe who has since retired. Over the past nine years, the present owners, Mr.& Mrs. Comerford have built on these solid foundations. They are both fully involved in the daily life of the school, Anthony Comerford is the current Principal and Helen Comerford is the Learning Support Teacher.

During the 40th Anniversary Day, guests enjoyed viewing a wide range of displays on the history of Brackenfield including a large amount of memorabilia including school reports and photographs. They also had the opportunity to tour the school and view the classes enjoying a range of activities. Over a buffet lunch, the Infant Choir performed a medley of songs from the Sound of Music whilst the Junior Choir sang their entries for the

regional Music for Youth festival that included their Yorkshire Medley performed at the VIP opening event of the Tour de Yorkshire. What kids really need to know before

starting school

Just five minutes ago you were bringing your little one home from the hospital. Now you’re shopping for their first school uniform and trying to find a suitable pair of school shoes. Where did the time go?

If you go onto any parenting forum once the primary school offers go out, you’ll find lots of panicking parents worried that their little one will be left behind if they aren’t properly prepared. Relax. All children learn and develop at different rates and in different ways. There is no definitive list of musthave skills for them to have acquired before the start of term. There are a few basics that can be helpful. Read on to find out what your child really needs to know before they start school.

Holding a pencil

There is a myth that your child will be expected to at least write their own name before they start school.

This isn’t the case at all, and no one expects a child who is four or who has just turned five to achieve this straight away. There will always be some who can, but that doesn’t mean anything. Remember when we said earlier that all children develop differently? Being able to hold a pencil confidently though is quite useful.

Again, don’t panic if they can’t. Some children are simply late at developing fine motor skills, and some may face other barriers. Both hypermobility syndrome and dyspraxia, for example, make holding a pencil and putting pressure on paper hard. If you suspect that’s the case for your child, try building them up slowly by encouraging them to play with Lego or Duplo, or make models from modelling clay.

Dressing and undressing

Independent dressing is something children should be able to do. Some things may be difficult for children at Reception age like buttons, but there is a reason why the early year’s uniform is usually based around t-shirts and jumpers. Don’t send them to school at this age with shoes that have laces. Staff will be there to help them with dressing, particularly when they start changing for PE lessons, but most children at this age can’t tie their own laces and aren’t expected to. Velcro fastenings are much faster and also give children some independence.

Using the toilet on their own

Now, this is a must-have skill. If your child has been in private day-care, they may be used to having staff around that help them with toileting. There is a lot less of this in school. Unless a child has special needs, they will need to wipe themselves and be able to flush the toilet.

Reading

This is one area where some parents (and we all know the type) can get competitive. Unfortunately, this can have the knock-on effect of dragging other parents into worrying about it as well. Should your child be able to read before they start? Will that give them a bump up to the ‘top table’, and if they can’t read does that mean they will never catch up?

There is no need to be so anxious. Reception is not as academically oriented as Year 1. There is no expectation that any child will be able to read at such a young age. Indeed it may even be a disadvantage. There is more than one type of phonics for example – what if you have used a different type of phonics to the school? Or you haven’t used phonics at all in teaching them to read? Don’t spend the summer trying to get them to learn the alphabet. Enjoy your time together instead. There are lots of studies out there that show reading to your child every day has a far better impact on their educational outcomes.

Mastering cutlery

The chances are that your child will have cooked, school dinners. First off, don’t get anxious if they aren’t that great cutting up their food. There will be dinner supervisors there to help them. Most schools (possibly all schools) arrange dinner times so that nursery and reception children come in first, and are able to take their time picking their food, and settling down at the table.

However, if your child can use a knife and fork, and cut their own food, it will make lunchtimes a lot easier for them. They will also be expected to carry their food tray and take plates up to be washed. This is something you can prepare them for at home by getting them to carry their plates out to the kitchen after meals.

How much to Help and How Much to Let Go

Parental anxiety is normal at the time your child moves from primary to secondary school.

During the primary school years, it is fairly easy to support your child at school. You will probably know their teacher, other members of staff and parents, as well as being familiar with school policies and routines. Losing the control this familiarity offers is as daunting for parents as it is for children and you may wonder how best to continue to support your child effectively.

You may also worry specifically about your child’s ability to cope with the new environment and, crucially, whether he or she will make friends.

Attending secondary school IS a big leap up for a child – the children are older and bigger and it is challenging for children to get used to moving from classroom to classroom for different specialist lessons in a building which is usually much larger than primary school. They will be treated by teachers and staff as much more independent individuals, expected to remember more complex school routines, and given less assistance managing them. There are also a lot of new names and faces to get to know.

Never fear though – your child may be much more ready for this than you expect and your anxieties may be eased by adopting strategies that help with the transition.

Here are some tips and tools which should help you prepare for and manage the early months: Before the transition: Shield your child from your anxiety. They can make this transition. Critically, they need to know that you believe in them and in their ability to deal with difficulties and challenges.

If your child will walk to school or travel independently on public transport, practice the new journey Start by travelling together but without interaction. Then move to simply following behind your child. Finally, let him do it alone and meet him there. Travel at busy times. Allow your child to make mistakes and find solutions. This equips him with the skills to handle the unexpected, like bus detours and road closures.

After the transition: Be There Make sure a parent or trusted carer is available before and after school, to provide food, notice if your child comes in late, listen to their successes and concerns and be aware of subtle changes in mood; someone to empathise and with whom to discuss problems. Watch and listen, help out if asked but don’t take over. Become an Enabler rather than a Fixer.

Support the development of friendships Mixing socially and establishing secure friendships is of great importance to older children and they need to do this whilst still young enough to turn to you for support when they make mistakes. Gradually, they will learn to make informed choices about friends.

It’s appropriate for this age group to have access to

a basic mobile phone and computer to communicate with friends but the dangers of social networking should be discussed and boundaries agreed.

Support organisation and routines. Create “To Do” lists or “Timetables” for the fridge, agree places to keep bags, kit, and books. Label uniform and valuables. Establish routines so they can get to school punctually. Don’t expect too much too soon, many won’t crack this for years!

Understand what homework they have and know when it has been completed and handed in. Agree a routine that will help your child to complete and hand in all homework on time, without devoting too much time to one piece and little or nothing to others. However, remember it is their homework not yours; help, encourage, motivate but accept their best.

Schedule time to relax. Your child will be exhausted by the effort of holding it all together.

Tears are likely over the most trivial things and they may regress and demand more care. Trust that they can cope and make sure there is time for sleep, friends, homework, more sleep, watching TV, playing computer games and yet more sleep! Avoid weekend breaks and reduce extra-curricular commitments to the minimum. Now is not the time for your child to begin new activities or classes.

And lastly, schedule time to relax yourself! All will eventually be well.

Measuring your child’s feet Because your child’s feet will continue to grow in fits and starts, it’s important to have them measured by a trained, professional shoe fitter in a shoe shop every eight weeks or so. The fitter will measure your child’s feet from the tip of their longest toe to the back of their heel and across the widest part of the foot. From these measurements, the correct size and fitting of shoe can be determined.

You can quickly check the fit of your child’s shoes each month yourself, in between professional fittings. There should be roughly a thumbnail’s length between the end of the shoe and your child’s toes, in order to allow for movement and growth.

Warning signs to look out for Children are not always good at telling their parents when they have problems with ill-fitting shoes, so you may need to play detective and be on alert for problems.

The following signs are usually indicative of poorly-fitting shoes: • Blisters and rubbing • Poor posture or a rolling gait when your child walks • Reluctance to wear shoes at all • Refusing to wear socks (usually if the shoes are too small and tight) Obviously, if your little one complains that their feet hurt or become reluctant to wear their shoes, it’s a good idea to have their

feet measured professionally again, just in case they’ve outgrown their current pair of school shoes.

What to look for when choosing school shoes There are a number of important things that you should look for when choosing school shoes for your kids. A firm heel cup is very important. The heel supports the foot and needs to be held in a straight position. If the heel leans to one side or the other, pain and postural problems could arise. Try pressing gently on the sides of the heel - if it sinks in easily, the shoe is not providing sufficient support.

The shoe should have a strap, Velcro or laces to prevent the shoe from slipping forward and scrunching your child’s toes.

Ill-fitting shoes that crush the toes can lead to permanent problems like clawed or hammer toes. The shoe sole should be flexible at the ball of the foot only and it should have sufficient cushioning so that the foot is supported comfortably when your little one runs or skips.

Shoe material should be breathable and water resistant. If your child’s feet sweat and can’t breathe, smelly feet and fungal infections can result.

It is a good idea to encourage your child to wear socks with their school shoes. Socks help to absorb sweat and can prevent damage to the feet caused by friction as your child runs and plays.

Shoe styles to avoid

There are a few styles that should be avoided when choosing school shoes.

• Rubber clogs don’t provide enough

heel support and can cause your child to walk with their toes turned out, potentially causing joint and knee problems.

• Ballet pumps and plimsolls are usually flat and flimsy so they don’t give enough support to the feet, sometimes leading to the toes being clenched in order to stop the shoes from slipping. Problems such as fallen arches or flat feet can also be caused by perpetually wearing very flat shoes.

Trainers are a much better choice for kids as they can provide plenty of support as well as being comfortable and breathable.

• Ugg boots or similar should only

be used as slippers as they don’t provide enough support to the feet to be worn on a daily basis as outdoor footwear.

• High-heeled shoes are not a good idea for school because of the pressure that is exerted on your child’s toes. Slip on high-heels often cause the feet to slide forward, resulting in crushing of the toes.

• Overly heavy shoes should be avoided as they can put too much strain on growing feet and can encourage clawing and clenching of the toes.

It’s really important that you choose well-fitting shoes for your kids, not just for their comfort now, but for their future foot health too.

summer daysout Free ways to keep the kids entertained this summer Trying to keep children occupied can be difficult enough on evenings and weekends, let alone when you have six weeks of summer holidays to contend with. But trying to keep them busy, and trying to not spend a lot of money doing it, is another matter.

Whilst the zoo, cinema and sporting events can be fun, they soon burn a hole in your pocket and leave you looking for your next pay check to take your children to the next big thing. But don’t fear, there is help at hand, and a lot of ideas and activities that can be done for next to nothing.

Hiking All you have to do is put on your most sensible form of footwear and head out there. Getting out up a hill or through a forest can open up your children’s imaginations. The smell and touch of the outdoors are a welcome change from everyday life. The kids will love exploring new surroundings too.

Chalk Children have a mischievous side and may have seen their favourite cartoon character dabble in a bit of graffiti. Grabbing some chalk and scribbling on the pavements is a great way to open up their artistic side while they get some fresh air, and it can also make them think that they are playing the rebel. You’ll be safe in the knowledge that they are creating art knowing the next spot of rain will clear away the evidence.

Museums and art galleries Some museums and galleries are expensive. But what a lot of people don’t realise is there are countless free museums to be explored on a whole range of different subjects. You don’t have to go far either; there’s probably one in your own town. The beauty of them is that your children will be learning, having fun and being inspired at the same time, meaning they can be a wonderful recipe for knowledge.

Gardening One of the beautiful things about gardening for adults is the ability to create a vision in your head, plant, and then watch that vision grown into reality. There is no reason why your children can’t be a part of that process too. Help them plant some flowers or seeds and not only do you have entertainment for one day, but it’s something you can go back to and chart how they grow.

It’s a wonderful biology lesson for children, and they won’t even realise it!

Volunteer OK, this may be a hard sell but could provide a wonderful life lesson. Volunteering can be done on a huge range of tasks, be it simply providing company for a neighbour, walking a dog, helping out in a charity shop, helping plant trees or anything else that benefits another fellow human or cause. Learning the value of doing something for nothing may give your children a fulfilling early life experience.

Baking Cooking is an important life lesson for anybody, so why not start them out young with the most joyous from of cooking, baking! Dependent on their age, you could get a cartoon cake mix or make your own grown-up cake.

The kids will love getting involved, especially with all the messy parts of baking. Getting them to clean up after themselves, however, may be a bit more difficult!

Bike ride Bikes are a great, free and fun way to spend a few hours. Whether you have somewhere local or can drive to a park, the children will love the independence and freedom that comes with riding a bike. It’s a great way to travel long distances in a short space of time, and they’ll feel like they’ve really achieved something..

Trip to the pond A local pond is a great way to find wildlife that may be missing from your back garden. From frogs and tadpoles to fish swimming below, it gives little ones a taste of the outdoors in a safe environment. You can also take part in a classic pastime - just grab some bread and feed the ducks, they’ll love it.

Home cinema The actual cinema is getting very expensive, so expensive that a lot of people these days leave the popcorn and the drinks out of their experience. Anyone who’s had to tell a child that they can’t have those things knows how difficult it can be. Instead, watch out for the latest premiere on your home TV, darken the room and make your own popcorn. The kids will love it, and you’ll love not having to travel and pay a small fortune for snacks.

Make something All you need is some simple arts and crafts to let their imagination go wild. With some card and sticky tape you can make anything in the world! Maybe make a paper boat or a plane. Or perhaps it’s someone’s birthday coming up and you want to make them a custom card.

It’s a great way to get their creative side working.

Head to the beach Children love beaches, it’s almost universal. They have a seemingly unlimited supply of a material they rarely get to play with, sand! Having that open space, cool breeze and ice cream in hand makes the beach a unique experience. Running away from the waves, skimming stones, building sandcastles, making pictures in the wet sand...hey, you might even turn into a kid yourself for the day!
