Choosing a Tutor for Your Child By Kate Hilpern In the past, parents might employ a tutor, discreetly, to help their child keep up at school. Now tutoring is much more high profile and focuses on making students more academically competitive – getting ahead, not just keeping up. The upside is that parents have a greater choice of highly professional and specialist tutors. However, because employing a tutor is regarded by some as the mark of ‘good’ parenting, parents may waste their money when it isn’t necessary, with little or no benefit to their child. If you are considering tuition, have a clear objective such as helping your child to prepare for an exam, offering support after an extended absence from school or addressing a particular problem area. A vague feeling of unease because every other pupil in the class seems to have a tutor probably isn’t sufficient reason!

How do you go about finding a tutor? Word-of-mouth can be very effective. Talk to friends and parents at the school gates, even ask your child’s teachers for tutors in your area who are reliable, friendly and get results. Bear in mind though, that the fantastic tutor who worked wonders with your neighbour’s child may not develop the same rapport with your own. Tutoring websites, which act rather like newsagents’ advertising boards, are a useful starting point. These are little more than a collection of small ads but tuition offered here will be relatively affordable, though the onus is on parents to interview potential

tutors. Or you may want to consider local tuition companies that feature in magazines like Families. Another option is a tutor agency. These range from small, local concerns to national or even international companies. All provide a personal service and offer a choice of highly experienced, hand-picked and expert tutors, custom-built to meet your child’s needs. You’ll end up paying more but the best agencies take immense care vetting, training and matching their tutors and conducting careful follow-ups. With costs ranging from £25 to £150+ an hour, depending on the subject and your location, tuition is an investment. There’s no iron-clad guarantee that it will transform your child’s school grades so, if you proceed, then taking care how and who you choose is definitely the first step in the right direction. Kate Hilpern is from the Good Schools Guide, UK’s leading independent source of school reviews, education information and advice. The Good Schools Guide reviews over 50 tutor agencies, having visited each and talked to staff and former clients. For more info, visit www.goodschoolsguide.co.uk

Improving Your Child’s Working Memory Working memory is the part of the brain that stores information so it can use it again. Children use this all the time: to remember what they read in the previous paragraph of a book, when doing mental maths and to follow directions with lots of steps. The good news is that, if your child’s working memory seems poor, it can be improved with practice. Here are some ideas that might help:

Encourage questions To learn and remember, a child needs to fully understand a topic. By asking questions, children actively participates in learning, helping them develop a deeper understanding of the subject.

Let your child be the teacher Only when you fully understand something can you truly explain it. To check your child’s understanding, get them to tell you what they know. “Teaching you” knowledge they just learned is more likely to make it stick.

Discuss a topic and ask your child’s opinion Learning is much more fun if you can discuss topics and exchange opinions. If your child is expecting a discussion, they are more likely to retain the information for at least the amount of time required to answer questions about it. Once an engaging discussion has happened, they are more likely to remember the subject matter.

Visualisation and flashcards Get your child to picture something in their mind and then describe it. Initially they may need to draw the picture first, but,

with practice, they may no longer need to do this. Flashcards with words or pictures can also be used to practice spellings or the meanings of words.

Use the senses Your child will develop a better relationship with what they are learning if they engage with it in lots of ways. Get your child to talk, act out using props, read and listen to audio or podcasts.

Encourage active reading Active reading involves underlining or highlighting text or making notes on stickers. This helps your child keep the information in mind. Pair with asking questions or discussing a topic as described above! Break information down Smaller amounts of information are easier to remember. Build up from there. Encourage your child to organise the information into lists with headings and use different colours to make certain parts stand out.

Support for Families in NW London Around Oral Health

Sharon

Louise

Hello, we are the Oral Health Promotion team of North West (NW) London. Our vision is that every child is given the best start in life and the opportunity to grow up free from dental decay.

settings to promote good oral health, such as the supervised tooth-brushing programme. We work in partnership with other healthcare providers to enable us to reach out and engage with the whole community.

Tooth decay is largely preventable yet it remains serious problem. We aim to improve the oral health of all children in NW London and reduce the oral health gap for disadvantaged children, as NW London is the most dentally deprived area in London. According to latest statistics taken from the 5 year old dental survey, Harrow has the highest rates of tooth decay in children, above all other London Boroughs followed by Brent. This data highlighted that 42.4% of 5 year olds living in Harrow and 40.1% in Brent have dental decay, compared to England which is 23.4%. Our role is to increase awareness of the importance of maintaining oral health and support families by providing the key oral health messages. Our Oral Health Promoters work with the community to create environments that promote good oral health from an early age, including: supporting a number of education (early years and school)

Which toothpaste?

When to brush my child’s teeth?

For children aged three years and above, use a pea-sized blob amount of toothpaste containing at least 1000 - 1500 ppm (parts per million) fluoride. Children under 3 a smear of toothpaste containing 1,000ppm fluoride.

Children’s teeth should be brushed last thing at night before bed time and on at least one other occasion for at least 2 minutes.

Don’t rinse your mouth immediately after brushing teeth as rinsing washes the protective fluoride left behind by brushing. How often should I see the dentist?

As more teeth come through, it is important to develop a system of brushing that ensures that all surfaces of the teeth are brushed.

Dental check-ups for children are free under the NHS.

Assist tooth brushing until about 7 years of age as by then their coordination will be fully developed and they will be able to brush properly. Children should be encouraged to do some of the brushing themselves so that they develop routine and tooth brushing skills. Remember to praise and encourage your child (use a sticker chart).

Which toothbrush? Use a small soft headed toothbrush. ERS BEGINN FFER O L SPECIA

Should You Defer Your Child’s School Start? By Claire Winter

Are summer-born children disadvantaged? Should you defer your child’s school start if they are summer-born? After all, your child may be nearly a year younger than their peers and, at ages 4 and 5, this amount of time can make a big difference to how ready a child is to embrace the school environment. The topic has been hotly debated for years. Certainly, there are pros and cons, but there is no one-size-fits-all solution.

What is the compulsory school starting age? By law, children in England have to start school in the September following their fourth birthday. Although most children start at this age, you are not legally compelled to start your child at school until they are of Compulsory School Age. This is a set point after their fifth birthday, as follows: Children who turn 5 between 1 September and 31 December reach Compulsory School Age on 31 December. Children who turn 5 between 1 January and 31 March reach Compulsory School Age on 31 March. Children who turn 5 between 1 April and 31 August reach Compulsory School Age on 31 August. This means that children summer born children do not have to start school until the September after their fifth birthday, rather than being required to start school when they have literally just turned 4.

Familiesonline.co.uk

Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland have different school starting ages.

How can I defer my child’s start at school? Firstly, this requires approval from the admissions authority when you apply for a school place. If you delay school entry, your child will start their Reception year at age 5 and Year 1 at age 6. Another option is to apply for flexible attendance, where your child attends Reception on a part-time basis or their entry is staggered, going from part-time to full time over an agreed length of time. If you request to delay your child’s school entry, bear in mind that the school at which your child is offered a place has the right to decide whether they can start in Reception a year late, or whether they go straight into Year 1 with their normal age group. This obviously has implications for your decision making process. More info: www.gov.uk/government/publications/summerborn-children-school-admission

The Importance of Toddler Play

By Dr Sarah Mundy

So, how do we initiate play? And what do we do?

A good environment is key Without overloading your child, provide toys and varied activities (which stimulate different senses) without too many distractions. Children need to engage in both calming as well as stimulating activities, so they can differentiate between the two and learn to regulate their feelings.

You’ve made the time and created the environment. Now what?

“One of the biggest complaints from adults about their own childhood is the lack of play with their parents” (Margot Sutherland, Child Psychotherapist, The Science of Parenting). Play is an enjoyable part of childhood, but also an important one for the developing brain. Through play, children develop physically, emotionally, cognitively and creatively. It allows them to engage in the world in a way that feels safe, explore different roles, address fears, and develop confidence. Children who have parents who actively play with them, learn about sharing, problem solving and decision-making more quickly than those who don’t. Playing with your child also helps you understand their world and shows them you are interested in them, both important aspects of a secure attachment relationship, which is seen as the cornerstone of a child’s development. It’s therefore very important to make time for play with our BB Stanmore ad:Layout 1 14/08/2020 Page be 1 difficult. children, evenHPL though prioritising this can 14:21 sometimes

You may feel out of your comfort zone. Try not to worry. Make play a joint venture but be led by your child. To enhance connection, Dan Hughes, clinical psychologist, refers to the process of ‘follow, lead, follow’ – let your child explore; show enjoyment; mirror what they are doing and build upon it for them, so that they can expand their play repertoire. Try to stick to their agenda, not yours. Repetition is an important part of learning and completely normal – even if dull for you!

Make playtime count Attachment play focuses on connection. It is characterised by shared activities involving eye contact and mirroring – like peek-a-boo, drumming together and messy play. Letting children take the lead and being accepting, not critical, helps them learn and strengthens your connection. To maximise play time, turn housework into a game! Incorporate play and physical activity too – time spent in natural spaces outdoors is also good for both your wellbeing. Parents Need to Play Too By Andrew Campbell In our hectic modern lives as parents, we can focus so heavily on work and family commitments that we never have time for pure fun. Somewhere between childhood and adulthood, we stopped playing. Adult play may be dismissed as a waste of time by some, but it is actually a vital opportunity to forget about our responsibilities for a while and allows ourselves to be social in a creative, unstructured way.

Benefits of adult play

What is adult play?

While the benefits of play for healthy child development are well known, it is also beneficial to people of all ages. Play can be a great source of stimulation and relaxation for adults.

Play can be anything from messing around with friends, going for a bike ride with your partner or playing ball with your dog to dressing up with your children. There doesn’t need to be any point to the activity beyond enjoying yourself. Focus your attention on the actual experience, not on accomplishing any goal. Play is being joyfully immersed in the moment, and as adults, we rarely do that.

Play has been shown to release endorphins, improve brain functionality, and stimulate creativity. And it can even help to keep us young and feeling energetic. Studies show that play improves memory and stimulates the growth of the cerebral cortex. Playing together has been found to help couples rekindle their relationship and explore other forms of emotional intimacy. Playing with your children, pets, friends, work colleagues and partners is a good way to fuel your imagination. It also boosts creativity, emotional well-being and problem-solving abilities. Play can also make work more productive and pleasurable.

Leisure time as adults often means zoning out in front of the television or a screen rather than engaging in active play like we did as children. Just because we have responsibilities, it doesn’t mean we have to take ourselves so seriously and make life all about work. Regardless of our age and pressures we all need to play. By giving yourself permission to play with the joyful abandon of childhood you can have a lot of fun and you will benefit from increased health and reduced stress.
