When I learnt I was pregnant, I was keen to stay fit and strong. I have always loved yoga and was keen to continue, however it soon became apparent that I needed to adapt my practice.
During my first trimester I suffered from extreme dizziness, and fatigue like I had never experienced before. Following the advice not to practice movement-based yoga before 12 weeks, I left behind those elements of my practice and instead focused on yoga nidra (sleeping yoga), meditation and breathwork. These were amazing at helping me replenish my energy, come to terms with my changing body and begin to bond with my bump.
From 12 weeks onwards, and with consent from my GP, I reintroduced adapted asanas (yoga poses) and movement. Attending pregnancy yoga was the highlight of my week and I continued until I was 40 weeks.
Below are the top 5 benefits I found from this beautiful practice:
Preparation for Labour and Delivery
The poses practised in pregnancy yoga classes are specifically chosen to help prepare for labour. These may be poses that help encourage babies into an optimal position for birth, movements that can be used during labour to navigate surges/ contractions or poses that help to build strength and stamina and help you to stay mobile throughout your pregnancy.
Promotes a Connection with Your Bump
Dedicating time just for you is a great way not only to help come to terms with the changes your body is going through, but also to strengthen your bond with your bump. There is always an opportunity during class to “check in” with bump, to see how they are and have a little chat with them. I loved the opportunity to slow down, leave behind the stresses of everyday life and do something that was just for me and bump.
Provides Relief from Common Pregnancy Complaints
During pregnancy, your body changes more rapidly than at any other time. Many pregnant women experience tightness and discomfort in their neck and shoulders as well as their lower back. Pregnancy yoga offers the opportunity to stretch out these areas safely.
