Mothers Mean Business

High five! Children’s favourite Trunki celebrates its fifth birthday with the launch of the Quinn – the new ride-on limited edition suitcase. As with all iconic Trunki suitcases, the Quinn can be packed, pulled, towed and ridden (£34.99 at www.trunki.com).

Stay safe in the sun

Remembering when next to slap on the suncream is always a challenge but thanks to UV Angel’s sun sensitive jewellery you can have a constant reminder. The jewellery uses sun sensitive beads that react to UV rays by changing colour and letting you know it’s either time to put on some more cream or to get out of the sun for a while. The beads are also a great way of teaching children about the dangers of skin cancer and keeping safe in the sun. The range includes gifts for parents and children and prices start at £2.50 (www.uv-angel.com).

Nicola Byers lives in West Wickham with her husband and two children aged 14 and 6. She bought a Talking Tots franchise in 2008 and has never looked back What is Talking Tots? It’s a unique provider of fun classes to help children aged between 1 and 5 to develop language, listening and pre-literacy skills through games, stories, songs and rhymes. What did you do before Talking Tots? I worked in marketing for 12 years but when I had my second child I found that my work/life balance wasn’t working with a full time job. I love children and had always wanted my own business so I decided to look for a children’s franchise that would be more flexible and fit in better with family life. What made you choose Talking Tots? In November 2007 I went to see a Talking Tots class. It caught my eye as my daughter was two and not speaking much at all. I loved it and could see how it would benefit all children, not just those with speech delays. I bought the franchise straight away and launched my first classes the following April.

Carry it with you! Demand for the most exciting innovation in baby products – My Carry Potty – has been overwhelming since entrepreneur Amanda Jenner first launched it to take the stress out of potty training. And now the potty is available in a whole range of new colours, allowing your toddler to choose their favourite. Unlike a regular potty My Carry Potty has been designed to use anywhere. Fitted with an ingenious rubber seal and clip shut lid, it’s completely leak and odour-proof and there’s no messing about with liners or assembly. £24.99 at www.mycarrypotty.co.uk

www.familieslondonkent.co.uk

How does it fit in with family life? It’s term time only and it also allows me to pick my youngest child up from school. Although I run 18 classes per week and am really busy, I can work at home and I have two teachers to help lead the classes. What are the best bits about working for yourself? The flexibility and the satisfaction that you have achieved something. I love working with children and to see them blossom is so rewarding. With children, every class is different so you never get bored. I also love meeting so many people and I class my customers as friends.

And the worse? Maybe the fact that you can never switch off. I also get very attached to the children so I feel tearful when it’s time to say goodbye. What advice would you give to other parents wanting to set up in business? Be prepared for lots of hard work and don’t give up. You will have lots of ups and downs but as long as you believe in your business and enjoy what you do, it will pay off. Top tip for a good work/ life balance? When you have time off, go out and spend quality time with the family. Being indoors is too tempting to continue with work, housework etc. If you are unhappy with your work/ life balance, don’t be frightened to make a change. Nicola Byers runs Talking Tots classes in Bromley, Beckenham, West Wickham and Orpington. For more information call 07504 166107 or email nicola@talkingtots.info
