OSCARS operates thirteen After School Clubs, four Breakfast Clubs and seven Holiday programmes around Edinburgh and The Lothians. Established in 1992 OSCARS has a wealth of experience in managing and operating successful programmes, attended by over 1000 clients on a weekly basis. The management and staffing of Out of School Care is becoming more daunting and complex as further regulation around staff qualifications, operational policies, quality assurance and staff development is introduced. OSCARS is looking to increase the number of clubs that they operate and have recently taken over the management of a number of facilities around Edinburgh in a way that has caused minimum inconvenience for clients and staff. Andrew Fisher, Founder of OSCARS commented ‘becoming part of the OSCARS network of out of school care guarantees the on-going development and viability of a service. Operating with the client base OSCARS has means there is a flexible staff base who undertake formal staff training and development monthly. Back-up to cover staff sickness is always available and an efficient head office support team takes care of all administration with the minimum of fuss’. If you are currently managing or are involved with a parent committee managing an Out of School Care facility, and you would like to speak with OSCARS regarding them assisting you in the management of certain aspects of the club, or indeed taking it over, please contact Andrew Fisher on afisher@oscarschildcare.com or telephone 0131 557 7500 for an informal chat. Edinburgh Power of Food Festival Children from all over the country will compete in one of the biggest writing contests of the year – taking on the challenge of putting pen to paper and writing a 500 word story to theme of ‘Strange Events & Peculiar Happenings’. Since launching seven years ago, tens of thousands of children have battled it out to be crowned National Young Writer of the Year where they are awarded the coveted prize of a trip to Disneyland Paris for their whole family – and £500 worth of books for their school! Children aged five to 14 can enter for free by submitting a 500 word story via www.explorelearning.co.uk/youngwriters or popping into your local Explore Learning centre. The closing date is Friday 5th June. Explore Learning provides English and maths tuition to children aged five to 14. On Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June, the inaugural Edinburgh Power of Food Festival will take place across the city. In the first initiative of its kind, the notforprofit Festival will centre around a joyful garden gate open weekend and offer an exciting programme of events and activities at local venues. East Lothian based charity SiMBA is here to offer support to parents whose baby has died during any stage of pregnancy or shortly after birth. They provide Memory Boxes to those who have suffered loss at over 154 hospital units across the UK including Simpsons Maternity Unit, Edinburgh; St Johns Hospital, Livingston and the Borders General Hospital, Melrose; they can also send out individual Memory Boxes to parents upon request. Jenni is one of a team of volunteer facilitators trained by Child Bereavement UK, who run regular monthly support groups for SiMBA. “It is a big step to attend a support group, but we would encourage parents and family members who have been affected by loss to come along, even if its just to have a cup of tea, knowing that you are not alone can be a huge comfort”. The Edinburgh support group takes place on the last Wednesday of each month in Gate 55,55 Sighthill Road, Edinburgh, EH11 4PB from 6.45pm – 8.45pm. It's not always easy to get to group meetings so SiMBA also run a closed facebook page where parents or family members can go to chat at any time of the night or day. SiMBA can also provide a leaf for their memorial Tree of Tranquillity; a life sized copper sculpture where each leaf represents a baby who has died. The Edinburgh Tree us located in Saughton Winter Gardens, and the Borders Tree in Old Gala House To find out more about the charity visit www.simbacharity.org.uk or call 01368 860 141. It’s All About The Bikes (bout the bikes, no wobble...) Warning! This was written on post spin class endorphines. So, I have just returned from my first spin class at PedalHouse. My legs are heavy but my spirits are high. Having witnessed people in the past coming out of spin classes literally dripping in sweat (theirs - and from the people either side of them) I really wasn’t in a hurry to try one. However, I am so glad I overcame my preconceived ideas. For a start - not all spin studios have you crammed in (like the ones I’d seen), not all spin classes have deafening pumping music (like the ones I’d heard) and not everyone in a spin class looks like they could run a marathon. I went to the Tuesday morning class taught by Hugh. I was greeted with a huge smile and he helped me set up the bike and talked me through the resistance. I don’t know if all spin bikes are like this but the resistance just said + or - so there is no pressure to be on the same level as the person next to you because quite simply you can’t tell what level they’re on. This means you can concentrate on working at a level suitable for your body. The team at Pedal House were so friendly and they’ve done a great job with the premises which are bright and welcoming. Go and visit - the first class is free! (Register online). www.pedalhousedinburgh.com ride-on@pedalhousedinburgh.com 29a Beaverhall Road, Edinburgh, EH7 4JE 0131 556 0133 As well as spin classes Wednesday night is also run club.

GOODBye TO jOAnne AnD HellO TO GIllIAn WHO juST reCenTly TOOk Over THe eDInBurGH WeST jO jInGleS ClASSeS “I am delighted to be running Jo Jingles classes in Edinburgh West. After a rewarding career as a Primary School Teacher for 19 years, I felt that I wanted a new challenge and the idea of running my own business with the ability to better fit things around my family commitments seemed like a great opportunity. It’s not just about a new challenge for me though, I strongly believe that when children have the chance to enjoy music, songs, movement and instruments that it gives them some fantastic building blocks to help develop speech, language, numeracy, co-ordination and social skills. On top of that it’s great fun!” www.jojingles.com

PyjAmA DrAmA At Pyjama Drama we aim to ignite your child’s imagination. For young children pretending and role-play come naturally and it’s also an important way in which they learn about the world around them. Classes are full of songs, music, movement, and pretending – and children are encouraged to use their imagination to explore various themes. Not only are our classes lots of fun, they help children develop important skills such as confidence, communication, concentration and co-operation. And entering an imaginary world helps even the shyest child to come out of their shell. Weekly term-time classes are available on Wednesday mornings at St Giles’ Church, Marchmont. Monthly Saturday ‘specials’ are available at North Merchiston Club, Watson Crescent. To find out more information, or to make a booking, please email: louisek@pyjamadrama.com

BeeSpanish is an early stimulation programme whose mission statement is to teach Spanish to children under six as they play and sing. One recurring question is, why learn a foreign language at such an early age? Research carried out both in the UK and the USA has shown that the maximum absorbing capacity of a new language occurs up to the age of seven. BeeSpanish provides a unique space where children can learn Spanish through movement, music and interactive activities. Music and sound form a core part of our sessions prepared by professionals with a native Spanish speaking tutor and a qualified educational psychologist. We currently offer Sessions in Edinburgh - Stockbridge , Morningside, Portobello , Balerno. For more information Contact us at beespanish1@gmail.com / www.beespanish.co.uk

Parent Parent Favourite shop: John Lewis is a fantastic store and covers all bases so I think that probably takes top spot. Favourite park: Saughton Park is a great park as it has the added bonuses of the sand pit, skate park and the large grassy areas too. Everyone, no matter how young or old can be occupied there for many an hour. Favourite children’s club/class: At the risk of stating the obvious my favourite children’s class has to be Jo Jingles. I was a Jo Jingles customer for 10 years as my own 4 children all went to classes and have all developed a genuine love of music from such a young age as a result. We now have a trombonist, trumpeter, piper, drummer and guitarist in the house and lovely peaceful evenings… apologies to my neighbours!

Favourite day out: Having four children with a wide spread of ages to cater for can sometimes be a bit of a challenge. East Links farm in Dunbar is a fantastic place for keeping the whole family entertained for the day and in all weathers we can be found careering down the slides or leaping on the jelly belly. Cammo estate is great for getting out and about in the fresh air. There are great trees to climb, ruins and forests for hide and seek. Favourite child friendly restaurant: On this one we can sometimes struggle… mainly because it can be difficult to find one place that 6 people agree on at the same time!! Fabio’s on the Glasgow Road is just a few minutes from us and serves up a great selection of Italian fare with friendly service to go with it. Proudest eco-friendly moment: At school each of my children has been on the eco committee and my two eldest daughters are currently responsible for composting and helping to ensure the school is recycling as much as possible. I think it’s great that they already have a clear understanding of the importance of reducing landfill waste and do their bit to help. We recycle everything at home and as a result we’re at the community recycling station three or four times a week.

No parent should be without: Wipes! It’s amazing the amount of things that can be cleaned with a packet of wipes, what did we do before they were invented!? Parenting pet hates: When people park in the Parent and Child parking spaces and then get out of their cars to do their shopping with their invisible children! Parenting high points (what makes it all worthwhile): I love just sitting and listening to all the chat that goes on between the kids, especially when they make each other laugh and you can just hear their infectious giggles and chuckles. But nothing beats the spontaneous kisses and cuddles that they give you…..apparently I’m the best Mummy in the whole wide world! Funniest comment (from child): There have been so many between the four of them I could write a book. I thought it was really cute being asked to go to Tesco to get some pyjama dodgers or jam tartans! My youngest, Hannah was getting a bit of a row recently for not sitting nicely at the table so in her best grumpy voice she told me “Mummy, I’m not going to love you until you’re dead anymore but only until a week on Tuesday”! It was really tough keeping a straight face after that one!

Small enough to care, large enough to cope! Private day care nursery Friendly loving care for your child Experienced and qualified staff Open 7.30am - 6pm Monday - Friday Children from 3 months - 5 years Pre-School funding available childcare vouchers accepted Free Preschool Education for 3-5years (funded by Edinburgh Council)

Gillian Kelly is the new owner of the Jo Jingles Edinburgh West franchise, she lives in Craigmount with her husband Gordon and four children, Katie 10, Laura 9, Rowan 7 and Hannah 5. Favourite family holiday spot: We absolutely love holidaying in Aviemore as it has so much to offer all the family. We usually stay in Glenmore caravan and camping site, nestled at the foot of the Cairngorms on the shores of Loch Morlich which is possibly one of the most stunning locations in Scotland. You are surrounded by mountains, forests, rivers and the loch even has a sandy shoreline perfect for a paddle. A must for any holiday there is a trip to Landmark for their water slides and ropes courses and Edinburgh Zoo members also have the benefit of free entry into the Highland Wildlife Park nearby. If only someone could invent a way to get rid of those annoying midges! Best children’s book: 6 years ago my daughter, Laura came home from nursery with her “Book bug” bag and in it was a copy of You Choose by Nick Sharratt and Pippa Goodhart. It was read to her that night and then every night from then on for over a year! It is such an amazing book for developing children’s vocabulary and discussion skills and has been loved by all of my children. Our house is now on our third copy of this book as they have been used to the point of disintegration!

Best DVD: We love closing all of the curtains and curling up on the sofa together to have a ‘Movie Night’. A firm favourite with all the family is Home Alone, I know it’s a Christmas film but it’s easy to enjoy watching the bad guys slipping on ice, being hit by flying paint cans and generally getting their comeuppance in every slapstick way imaginable. It also has the best comedy scream ever! Most played with toys: Jenga bricks! Who knew they were so versatile? Not only can you actually play Jenga with them but they can be used to make barricades, shelters, castles and tables and chairs for Barbies! Biggest waste of money: As a first time mum I fell prey to all the usual clever advertising used to guilt trip you into buying so many unnecessary products. We spent a lot of money on a 3 in 1 pram system and what a waste that was. Our experience was that in reality once you’ve enjoyed pushing your little one around in their pram actually all we really wanted was a lightweight, easy to fold and store buggy!

Why you like living where you do: We’re very lucky to live very close to the school which is great as the older children can all walk there together without me worrying too much! We’re also close to friends and family, which is a real bonus as we can all get together easily. From a practical point of view it’s easy to get into town on the bus or get to the bypass or M8 for a day further afield.

Speech Therapy As a parent you may be confused as to what to expect from your child’s speech and language. Is he saying enough? Should we be able to understand her more? Meave Dillon is a Speech and Language Therapist at Edinburgh Speech Therapy and works with children with a variety of difficulties “7 % of five year olds entering school, 2 children in every classroom, have significant difficulties with speech and/or language” Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, 2015 Many pre-school children have difficulties with learning language, saying speech sounds correctly, playing and socialising appropriately for their age, speaking and mixing with others, and using words to be understood. This can lead to frustration for the child themselves and concerns for families. Many of these issues can be resolved however and research notes the earlier we can get help the better. A lot of children may not be saying and/or understanding as much as their peers. It is hard to know as a parent if your child is behind or just a ‘late talker’, what we should expect from a child of a certain age and how to help. As a communication therapist I would expect a child to be using words before 2 years old. Although all children are different a general rule of thumb would be; expect them to be using 1 word utterances at 1, two words together at 2 and 3 word sentences at 3. There are many factors involved in our learning a language. For instance is your child learning English as a second language? Have they had the opportunity to mix with lots of children of their age? Do they have a hearing difficulty? If you have any concerns seek advice but at Edinburgh Speech Therapy we recommend these top tips below to bring on your child’s communication skills; • Always say words correctly for your child. You are their model for speaking so ensure you are setting a good example. • Try not to anticipate everything your child wants. Children need opportunities to express themselves and if they are given everything they want without having to ask they do not get as many opportunities to speak and practice language. • Give your child choices – this will enable you to understand the word they are trying to say, and let them hear the correct way to pronounce it. • Try to be face to face with your child when you are speaking with them, they need to see your mouth to know how sound are made and where they come from in the mouth. • Talk about things around you that you see and repeat new words for them over and over “It’s a giraffe, what a big giraffe, the giraffe is running!” • Listen to what they say not how they say it. We want their interactions to be successful • Do not ask your child to say something over and over if they are not pronouncing it correctly. If they cannot produce it this will only make you both frustrated • If you are having difficulty understanding what they are saying try clapping out the syllables in words “Oh you mean el-e-phant”(3 claps) • Books are a great way to interact with your child. Remember we do not need to read books the same way every time. React to the things your child finds fun and talk about those • We have been singing nursery rhymes to children for generations. These help children learn rhyme, rhythm and stress in language. These are essential skills for language and precursor to literacy skills. Our grannies did it because it worked!!

You may also be concerned that your child’s speech is not fluent or they are finding it difficult to mix and play with other children. Older kids may be having difficulty with homework, or following instructions in class. Behaviour difficulties can often be a result of some of these issues. At Edinburgh Speech Therapy we work with all aspects and speech, language and communication difficulties. This includes stammering, understanding words, speech sound difficulties and many more. We work with many different children with various difficulties including autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, Fragile X, Language Delays, Specific Language Impairment, Social and Communication Disorders, speech sound problems, stammering, and more . If you would like some advice or to talk about your child please feel free to get in touch. You can send me a direct message through my website at www.edinburghspeechtherapy.co.uk or email at mdillon@edinburghspeechtherapy.co.uk. You can also call me on 07967815246 if you would prefer to talk to me in person. All advice is free and confidential.

Bring sunshine to your street with

The Big

Lunch As our attention turns to summer, why not plan something a bit different this year. A Big Lunch street party could help feed community spirit, provide the perfect recipe to have fun with your neighbours and encourage friendlier, safer neighbourhoods – after just a few hours of food, friendship and fun! The Big Lunch is the UK’s annual get-together for neighbours, an idea from the Eden Project made possible by The Big Lottery Fund. The event is becoming part of the annual calendar for communities across the UK. The first Sunday each June is Big Lunch day - Sunday June 7th June 2015. Big Lunch events can be big or small and they don’t need to cost much when everyone brings something to the table. There is also a free resource to help communities get started - The Big Lunch pack – available at www.thebiglunch.com or by calling 0845 850 8181. It contains posters, invitations, stickers, speedy salad seeds and lots of tips and extra info. This year’s posters and stickers also include animated ambassador for 2015, The Gruffalo! Over the past six years Big Lunches of all sizes have happened in all kinds of communities, in streets, back gardens, parks and community venues. Thousands of events have taken place each year, with a whopping 4.83 million people taking part in 2014. Last year, when Lara’s next door neighbour mentioned The Big Lunch, they agreed to see if there was an appetite for holding a street party in their Edinburgh neighbourhood. After an initial planning meet-up with some neighbours, the answer was a resounding ‘yes!’ As Lara explains, “I think it just took a couple of us to take the initiative and get the ball rolling. “It seems to be a common theme that neighbours have fewer opportunities to meet informally. In our Edinburgh neighbourhood, we’ve seen the closure of the baker, post office, pub and chemist. Some of us lead such busy lives that unless we make an effort, chances are we won’t see or speak to our neighbours. But it turned out everyone was really keen to get-together once the idea was put out there.” “The Big Lunch felt like the perfect excuse to bring everyone together. Initially we thought we should start small, however, our back gardens are not very accessible so we up-scaled our ambitions to a street party!” “We opened up the event to the wider neighbourhood, inviting the residents of six nearby streets along and inviting everyone to planning meetings.” “On the day, it was lovely to be part of such a team effort, everyone really brought something to it. There were some very longstanding residents who shared their memories of the street and then there was one family who had just moved in the week before - what a welcome party for them!” “The children really did make their own entertainment and loved roaming the street without the fear of traffic. It reminded me of my own childhood when it was a lot more common to play on the street without adult supervision.” “The real benefits we’ve felt since include a greater sense of community and in building trust. It reduces the anonymity of some of your neighbours. Once you’ve chatted to someone over cake (or chocolate strawberries, or green smoothie, or home made pakora!) what you’ve actually done, without noticing it, is broken down some imaginary barriers.” Post Big Lunch 2014 research (carried out by Havas UK) demonstrated the positive impact Big Lunch events are having across Scotland and the UK. 86% of those that took part said they felt closer to their neighbours afterwards, with 8 out of 10 people having kept in touch with people they met at Big Lunches in previous years.

The act of spending a few hours with those we live beside is helping to encourage communities to become more sustainable and to celebrating local living and sharing more – from ideas and conversation to skills and resources. It’s not just the day itself but what can happen after that really makes a difference.

Lara’s top ten Big Lunch planning tips! 1. Keep everyone informed 2. Put up posters on street corners 3. Keep it simple – a ‘pot luck’ lunch works best! 4. Ask people to bring their own plates, cutlery, cups and tables 5. Set-up a recycling station 6. Decorate with bunting 7. Assign a couple of First Aiders 8. Assign a couple of Stewards 9. Scatter play things along the street! 10. Give people name badges

Families who would like to boost community spirit in their area can get involved by registering for a free planning pack at www.thebiglunch.com or calling 0845 850 8181.
