This year, every child in Scotland aged between 2 and 11 will be offered the flu vaccine. The flu immunisation programme is being extended to ensure children are protected, and the risk of the virus being spread to others is reduced. Children aged between 2 and 5 will be offered the vaccine at their GP practice, and those aged between 5 and 11 will be offered it at school. To find out the facts and make sure your child is covered, visit immunisationscotland.org.uk/childflu or call the NHS inform helpline on 0800 22 44 88.

Certainly Wood, the inventor of kiln dried firewood, is a family business and the largest specialist firewood supplier in the UK. “Our logs are kiln-dried, which means they weigh less and burn for longer, with a more intense heat. The lack of moisture drastically reduces the amount of soot and tar a wood fire can create.” They only source wood from British woods and forests which means a felling licence is required to cut down trees. Proper management of woodland means it's sustainable and will continue to be a useful resource for generations to come. www.certainlywood.co.uk

(24 - 30 November) As a parent, Book Week Scotland 2014 is a great opportunity to celebrate a love of books and reading with your little ones. Here are five ways parents (and little ones) can get involved with Book Week Scotland 2014: 1.Make a reading promise for you or your children Sign up to one of our reading pledges - we've included some suggestions below, but you can also make up your own and then tell us about them by emailing bookbug@scottishbooktrust.com or visiting the Bookbug Facebook page. • I will read 'Peekaboo Park' from the Bookbug Baby Pack to my little one • I will join my local library and borrow at least one book • I will read a story with my child(ren) every day • I will read for 15 minutes every day • I will buy a book from a local bookshop 2. Come along to a Bookbug Session Bookbug Sessions are free, fun and friendly events for little ones and their families to enjoy together. A session lasts around 40 minutes and includes songs, stories and rhymes. Sessions take place throughout Scotland in libraries and other community venues – find your nearest session at www.scottishbooktrust.com/bookbug. 3. Watch some of our story, song and rhyme videos together Enjoy some traditional, healthy eating themed or Gaelic songs and rhymes videos with your little ones. Visit Scottish Book Trust’s website for videos of families sharing the books from the Bookbug Packs. If your child is due to receive a P1 Family Pack during Book Week Scotland 2014, you can also watch videos of the authors reading their stories. 4. Sign up to Bookbug's Library Challenge Bookbug's Library Challenge is a free and fun way to encourage children to discover a variety of exciting books. The challenge runs in libraries across Scotland and your child will have the chance to collect 10 beautifully illustrated certificates. 5. Organise a book swap with other families You could organise a book swap with other families at school, nursery or your local Bookbug Session. Chat about why you liked the books, swap for something you haven’t read before and encourage little ones to share their responses too. More information about how to take part in Book Week Scotland can be found on the Scottish Book Trust’s website – www.scottishbooktrust.com

Camera Obscura Toddlerfest 12th - 18th January 2015 This winter Camera Obscura and World of Illusions is thinking small. While older children return to school after the Christmas break the centre will be transformed into the perfect place for a visit with under 5s. On a normal day your visit includes a Camera Obscura show, six floors of interactive exhibits, a gift shop and an all-day ticket. “During Teeny Tiny Toddlerfest we are adding even more. Exclusive Camera Obscura shows for familes will leave the lights up, just in case you don’t like the dark, have lots of toys to keep little hands occupied, and mean that you don’t need to worry about the noise your toddler makes during the show.” Extra exhibits will focus on play at a toddler’s level; both developmentally and by physically lowering some exhibits. There will also be more seating for parents so that you can relax a bit while the toddlers are entertained (they guarantee they will be). “We also know that toddlers are unlikely to wait for a meal, so while you are welcome to head out to a café and come back later, we are also opening up a quiet room; for feeding, relaxing and sharing a cuppa with friends.” If you have any other ideas for us on how to make Camera Obscura an even better venue for young children please let us know. You can fill in a survey via www.familiesedinburgh.co.uk Any anyone who participates will be given a voucher for 20% off the admission price (and don’t forget, under-fives are completely free)! To find out more contact Alyce@camera-obscura.co.uk or call 0131 226 3709 www.camera-obscura.co.uk World Nursery Rhyme Week is open to anyone who has or works with children under 7. Sick Kids The Sick Kids Friends Foundation has been supporting sick children and their families since 1992. In this time, over £20 million has been raised by generous donors to help make Sick Kids better. Every year over 100,000 patients visit Edinburgh’s Royal Hospital for Sick Children from all over Scotland. The Sick Kids Friends Foundation works in partnership with NHS Lothian to enhance their provision. “Ultimately, we want to make time spent in hospital and other local healthcare facilities better and less stressful for all young patients and their families. We do this in a number of ways, including providing a wide variety of comforts which help to make time spent in hospital better. We assist with or wholly fund the most up to date and innovative medical equipment, to help a great hospital become a world class facility. We provide sensitive support for parents who may be miles from home and who want to stay close to their sick child. And, we fund training, research and state of the art training equipment for staff, so that they can keep up to date with best practise in Paediatric care. With no government funding all of our work relies solely on donations and every year we aim to raise around £1.5 million.” The recent fundraising campaign to purchase a brand new state of the art Gamma Camera and CT Scanner costing £550,000 was a huge success thanks to their dedicated supporters. The new equipment has been installed at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children and has replaced the dated machine they funded 13 years ago. This is Scotland’s first Gamma Camera and CT Scanner and it will benefit thousands of young patients for many years to come. “So far, 2014 has been a remarkable year for the Sick Kids Friends Foundation. The new Royal Hospital for Sick Children Edinburgh is due to open on the Little France site in 2017 and we recently approved grants for projects at the new hospital totalling £2.9 million. We hope we can rely on your support as we move forward with our fundraising plans.” Together we can help to ensure that the new hospital is a world class facility which will care for generations of sick children from all over Scotland. Whilst they are looking forward to this exciting new venture they will continue to make the existing hospital a very special place until the very last child leaves. You don’t have to be a doctor to help make Sick Kids even better. Please visit www.edinburghsickkids.org or call 0131 668 4949 to find out how you can help. Teresa is the founder of Autism in Scotland and lives in The Grange with her 4 children (Grace 9, Edward 7, Violet 5, and Charlotte 3) and husband Julian, who is a graphic designer. They also have two grown up daughters, Leanne 20 and Isobel 26.
Favorite shop: This may sounds like an unusual choice but I think it is Poundland! My 3 little daughters have autism so going to the shops is hard, it’s sensory overload for them, and my son is dyspraxic so he has sensory issues too and struggles with choosing. Because of this I buy a lot online (with them supervising) so we only have a few places they feel okay going to and enjoy - we love going there and buying loads (and I mean bag-loads) of crafty stuff and then getting busy around the table when we get home. I buy a lot of sensory toys in there too, like bubbles, sand and squishy rubbery things. Favourite park: We use the Meadows a lot, we walk around there as well as taking the kids there to ride bikes/scooters and to play at the parks. Through school they have also used the tennis courts so it is a very familiar happy place for them. We love the little playpark at Bruntsfield Links but really it’s the little grassy park next to the tennis courts we use most. Unusual, yes, due to the massive all-singing-all-dancing park along the way but for us the grassy park is safe. There is a swing for each child and there is lots of open space for the kids to run about without collisions, plus escaping is harder as the gate is very noisy! Favourite children’s club/class: For Grace and Edward I think it would have to be Dancebase in the Grassmarket. They have been going to Street Dance classes there for 3 years on a Saturday and both have integrated into classes and really enjoyed themselves. There is a Christmas show at the Queens Hall, which is a fantastic mix of styles and a real positive promotion of Dancebase. I am hoping to start Violet there soon too. Charlotte and Violet haven’t done any clubs yet but we have been hanging out at various toddler groups over the years, including the Sunshine Club at Southside Community Centre on a Wednesday and St Peters Toddler Group on a Monday and Thursday. Favourite day out: We are Zoo members and we love just hanging out there for a day, we go as often as we can during school holidays and I sometimes think the kids just like going for the playparks! Going to the beach is always the best day out though and we love Portobello beach, especially on a really hot day. Two of the kids also love going on an open top bus, we try to limit that to once or twice a year though! Favourite child friendly restaurant: We don’t ‘do’ eating out as a family but I am planning a visit to Nonna’s Kitchen in Morningside as I have heard great things about it being very inclusive for families. No parent should be without: Babywipes and an iPhone/Pod! Both get you out of many situations in ways I never dreamed possible!

Musings of a mum ......... When my children were small and wrapped around me for what felt like 23 out of every 24 hours it was impossible to imagine a time when I’d ever be able to perform a task two handed again. But day by day they grew and became a bit more independent - which is good, that’s what’s meant to happen. And, oh my goodness the relief of being able to sit down for a couple of minutes or even, heaven forbid, actually finish a sentence when having a chat with another grown up. Gradually the chance arose to put on a clean top (that might actually stay clean), quietly wipe off that sticky, slighty snotty kiss from my face and occassionally even brush my hair. And we would laugh so much, tiny hands in mine, jumping through and over the obstacles in our paths, pulling faces and singing songs stopping every so often just to have a big cuddle and refresh that sticky spot on my face with another kiss. Over the years on our journeys my giant bag of “stuff” has got steadily smaller and smaller. The leaky juice cup doesn’t come with us anymore, nor the spare pants or tiny toys. These days I can find my purse without having to rummage through shredded tissues and raisins. My spine feels as though it is slowly but surely lengthening, the space between each vertebrae easing now that we can leave the house without all this potentially vital debris. But as with every yang to a ying, while my spine got to expand my heart then got to constrict.

Parenting pet hates: People who are intolerant of my children’s differences in playing spaces, the street and on public transport. Things can get a bit tricky for us really quickly and all the tutting, sighing and comments just makes life so much more stressful. Other parents are often the worst offenders! Hidden disabilities like autism aren’t obvious so I wish as a country we had a more child-friendly attitude like on the Continent as that would help everyone. Parenting high points (what makes it all worthwhile): For me, seeing my 4 little ones clumped together on the couch, quiet and tangled up – this makes me feel a great sense of contentment. Funniest comment (from child): It was during teeth brushing time recently, and Edward (who is a big charmer and sook) said: mummy I love you so much, Me: Awh thank you Edward, I love you too, Violet: Uh, I like you mum (gee, thanks Violet) Favourite family holiday spot: We love being near a beach as sensory-wise all our children enjoy that and are much calmer. We rented a fantastic house in North Berwick - the back gate opens straight onto the West Beach. Fantastic place and felt like being away despite the close proximity to home. The Seabird Centre has a little soft play and the activities there are interesting. We also used the Leisure Centre trampolines, a lot! We also love Berwick-Upon-Tweed and Spittal Beach as there’s lots to do even though it’s a small place with lots in the surrounding countryside too. Best children’s book: We love Hairy Maclary in this house, I have been reading those books daily for almost 9 years and read them to my 20 year-old many years before that. I still have all the books from when she was a toddler and it’s so lovely to be using them again with the little ones. The older two prefer something more age appropriate now and the current favourite are books by Jeremy Strong, like My Dad’s Got an Alligator or My My Brother’s Famous Bottom! Most played with toys: Our kids have varied interests with the older two being more into iPads and playing Minecraft. Edward also loves the Angry Birds games that can be built up like Jenga and both love Lego too. Duplo is still a big hit with the younger two but they also love little figures, Charlotte is obsessed with Peppa Pig of course and Violet loves Littlest Pet Shop and has piles of them. Biggest waste of money: Mega Blocks! We used to have stacks of them and they literally never got played with, we used to build things for the kids but they still ignored them. Why you like living where you do: We don’t drive and Edinburgh is an amazing place as you can walk 20-30 mins and have an adventure and experience something new or visit an old favourite spot/venue. Having grown up in rural Perthshire I still miss quiet, clean air and space so I do love that the open spaces of the Meadows and Holyrood park are on my doorstep. What's your families favourite thing to do at Christmas in Edinburgh: Our family tradition is that on Christmas Eve we get up sharp and go to Winter Wonderland so the kids can go on rides (the Carousel being the favourite). We go at opening time so we don’t have to queue much and it’s quiet, which works really well for us. We always round off by buying bratwurst and pretzels, which our kids used to call Christmas bread. As we are leaving just after lunchtime it is beginning to get really busy, which is the perfect time to leave!
uld like to share your favorite bits of being a parent and living
.................................. For one day when I reached for that tiny hand, not only was it not so tiny anymore, but it also wriggled out of mine. One of my favourite things in the world, two hands instinctively reaching for and finding each other, was suddenly gone. Now only one hand reached out and sought, while the other hid up a sleeve. For my child had become a teenager. I adore my witty and intelligent teenager. My teenager is questioning, indignant and outraged. My teenager is beautiful. My teenager is a fizzing bomb of emotions and feelings. My teenager is awesome. I, on the otherhand, am now just plain embarrassing. I would say though, much to my teenagers embarrassment (but what’s new there?) that the same bag of tricks I used to carry round when they were small would still come in handy now. Teenagers will still fling themselves into puddles/rivers/the sea with the same lack of regard as a toddler. Now we just have to go home with them shivering and dripping. Teenage noses still run. Teenagers will still whine “I’m thirsty/hungry” when out and about and expect you to magic something out of thin air. And, a tiny toy makes everyone happy. No matter how big and teenagery. Fact.

Edinburgh mother of one, Kerryn Kirkpatrick, was like most first time mums when she brought her daughter Marloe (now 19 months) home from hospital ready to take on motherhood and all that it brought, including the prospect of sleepless nights. Kerryn, who lives in Leith with her husband, said: “Being naive first time parents who thought we could determine her sleeping habits from the start, we tried quite early to get her to go down for naps and bed at certain times. But it didn’t work! She was just too young. She did sleep well for three-hour chunks of time, as most newborns tend to do, and it gradually increased. We were happy with that. And more relaxed once we decided we weren’t trying to get her on to a strict schedule.” Kerryn and her husband persevered, and together, managed to get Marloe into a routine. She said: “We started again at 12 weeks. It was much easier then. She was older and could cope better with a bit of routine. We definitely had to train her and help her learn to soothe herself. Not controlled crying but gentle sleep training. We’ve had periods where she’s slept 12 hours a night for months, and periods where she most definitely has not! My tricks were calm music, patting her on the back, going in and out quickly when she’s upset and being consistent.” Like most mums, Marloe’s sleep training has been a huge learning curve for Kerryn. She said: “I think we have to remember that as important as it is for them to be happy, it’s important for the parents to be happy, so my husband and I laid out some ground rules. It’s also about trusting yourself to know what your baby is like and responds best to.” Kerryn believes that Parenting Across Scotland’s ‘top tips’ is a good initial guide for parents. She said: “The top tips are so helpful – any resources that new parents can draw on is a good thing. Parenting Across Scotland is a great resource.”

Here’s just a few of their top tips on helping your baby or toddler get enough sleep. They’re based on information from professionals and parents. All babies are different and you should do what works for you and your baby. 1) stay close For the first six months, your baby should sleep in the same room as you. For safety reasons, you should place your baby on their back, in a cot in the room with you. Do not overheat your baby or expose them to cigarette smoke. 2) treat day and night separately When babies are born they do not know day from night. Over time they learn to sleep more at night and less during the day, so it helps to separate day and night from the start. During the day, open curtains, keep it light and bright, play with your child and don't try to shut out everyday noises when they are asleep. At night, keep lights and noise levels low. 3) try to stick to bedtime and morning routines Babies and children like things to be calm and predictable. You may be able to get them into a bedtime routine quite early on. Try to do the same things in the same order: bath and change for bed; brush teeth; bed; read a story; kiss goodnight and dim the lights. Getting your child up at the same time every morning may help to 'set' their body clock. 4) help your child to learn to settle themselves Sometimes it's difficult to get to sleep - this is as true for babies as it is for adults. At first, babies may go to sleep being rocked or fed. However, babies will develop their own sleeping patterns and will start to sleep for longer over time. It is important that bedtime is not a battle; your baby needs to feel safe, secure and comfortable to get to sleep on their own. 5) look after yourself Remember, all parents and carers will have some interrupted sleep when their children are young. Get a break if you can - if your child has a nap, take the chance to have a rest. Easy to say, hard to do! Don’t be afraid to ask for help from family and friends. If you are worried or need extra advice, talk to your health visitor. To read the full article and for more parenting tips and advice go to www.parentingacrossscotland.org

Your GP
You will probably know YourGP by its previous name - Medicalternative. Established in 2003, they now rank as one of Scotland’s leading private medical practices. YourGP recently introduced a specific children’s clinic led by Dr Jo McCrone, a specialist children’s GP.
Dr McCrone and her team offer the complete range of doctor services including, blood tests, immunisations, vaccines, baby jabs and development checks. Dr McCrone’s specific strength lies in the assessment and treatment of baby and child health and development issues, such as bed wetting. The full national schedule vaccines are available, the combined MMR, International Meningitis vaccine for 2 years upwards which is perfect for children who travel or mix with various nationalities.
Dr McCrone states “It’s important not to rush children. You need to take time to build a good relationship and rapport, especially by taking time to explain what you’re going to do to them and why.” One key benefit of the children’s clinic is longer consultation times of 15 or 30 minutes.
Dr McCrone explains: “I get a lot more time with patients at YourGP than I do in my NHS clinic. This allows me time to work out the parents’ expectations, listen to concerns and assess the child’s needs. I am able to give the child the attention they need knowing I have done the best I possibly can for them.” Working as a part time GP in a busy NHS practice, as well as the A&E department of the Edinburgh Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Dr McCrone is very aware of how important a friendly, calm environment benefits children and their family. The clinic is not only for babies and toddlers it is for all age groups from birth to puberty. With that in mind YourGP actively promote the HPV vaccine for boys and girls from 9 years old protecting them from a horrendous illness in adult life. YourGP rooms are bright, welcoming and friendly spaces. All the staff want to make your visit as calm and comfortable as possible, providing toys and colouring books. Situated in the Dean Village on the Water of Leith a visit to the doctor also offers the opportunity for your wee one to see the family of ducks or, if you’re lucky the heron. To arrange an appointment with Dr McCrone, call 0131 225 5656 or email reception@your.gp YourGP, Waterside House, 19 Hawthornbank Lane, Edinburgh EH4 3BH. Limited free private parking available.

Will You Shop Local This Christmas? Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-political, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities. The day itself takes place on the first shopping Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses. This year Small Business Saturday UK will take place on Saturday December 6th. It’s massively tempting to take up the discounts offered by the High Street giants or online - why wouldn’t you want to get something a bit cheaper if you can? But what about your local community? What about that independent book shop that also runs knitting nights, or the local cafe that doubles as a gallery and offers space to mums with buggies to meet up - a lot of the things that benefit us and make our day to day existence just a little bit nicer are usually run by small business and independent retailers. And they can only exist for us if we support them.
Shopping locally gives you: Handmade goods – made by local craftspeople, these are often one-of-a-kind items that you won’t find in the big retailers. In-depth product knowledge and advice – small business owners often have a better knowledge of the lines they stock, for example which clothing brands ‘run large’ and which are true to size, or which shoes offer the best fit for narrow feet. Customer service – love the item but don’t like the colour? Independent retailers are often happy to order in products in other colours or sizes for you, and they usually deal with any complaints or problems in a far friendlier way than bigger businesses do.
“By choosing to spend money in locally-owned businesses, you know that you are choosing to keep more of that money in your community. You are also choosing to back the small businesses which play a key role in keeping your town centre viable. Not only do they provide a local service, they provide jobs, generate revenues and can be powerful advocates for local change.” Colin Borland, Head of External Affairs, Scotland. Federation of Small Businesses
Can you can “Shop Local” and still get the best deal. The simple fact is that the cost of running a bricks and mortar shop is very expensive and independent shops just can’t compete with every offer available online. There is an exception to this however. If you don’t need an item urgently and can wait a few days then independent shops can sometimes order in items that they don’t normally hold in stock. This can mean that they are able to offer a greatly reduced price for what is in affect an extra sale that they would otherwise not have been able to make.
A more enjoyable shopping experience – local business owners frequently like to take the time to chat and get to know their customers, which makes for a far nicer experience
Gulliver’s Toys and Gifts in Bruntsfield is embracing this concept and is updating it’s website to show customers the sorts of items and prices that they can offer. Many of these are 10% to 20% cheaper than the big players.
Stronger community ties – shopping locally helps to create town centres which are more sustainable and vibrant, meaning people feel part of the community. Local businesses are also often more willing than larger chains are to support local causes that have more meaning to them, and the area in which they live and work.
So whether you shop there regularly or have never visited before, take a look at what they have to offer. High Street £84.99 Gulliver’s Toys £64.99 (at time of printing)

edinburgh art Fair Edinburgh Corn Exchange, 11 New Market Road, Edinburgh, EH14 1RJ Friday 14th – Sunday 16th November 2014 Preview evening – Thursday 13th November 2014 East Lothian based organisers, Arte in Europa, have yet again gathered a great mix of galleries representing over 500 artists from very different horizons and working in different media: painting, printmaking, sculpture, glass, ceramics, and jewellery. The Fair is particularly keen to encourage young families and professionals to consider buying original art. “People can be a little intimidated about visiting galleries, but the Fair is the ideal place to take this first step” says Andy McDougall, “there is no pretentiousness at our Fair just great art and gallery owners eager to meet a new audience and help them find that special piece”. The Fair positively welcomes young families: a free crèche is available for the younger visitors (birth to 10 years) where they can enjoy art-related activities, while their parents stroll around the Fair. Visitors, young and old, are encouraged to find out more about contemporary art at the Fair, through live art demonstrations, artists talks and hands-on workshops. Amazingly all these activities are free! This year, Fife Dunfermline Print Workshop, a collective of professional printmakers, will offer adults and children a chance to try their hand at making prints. Over the three days of the Fair, The Too Much Fun Club, a group of street artists, will create a 7 meter wall painting live in front of the public.

clear PhotograPhy Sam and Susan Heaton started photographing the babies underwater four years ago after they experienced the excitement of the great photos they took of their baby daughter swimming underwater. "We have photographed thousands of babies swimming underwater and now we are capturing them on video at the same time. It’s amazing. Babies can hold their breath under water and swim unaided to the surface – before their first birthday. Catching these images yourself can be difficult as many pools don’t allow the public to use cameras and capturing that ‘special image’ is a challenge that we have become expert in” “We thought videoing the babies underwater was the next natural step in recording this special event for families. The filming and photographing of babies, only works well if the baby is used to being in the swimming pool and is comfortable being underwater.” Clear Photography travel around Scotland to capture these truly magnificent images and are offering a special one off Christmas inspired underwater shoot in Edinburgh on 9th November which includes 25 FREE Christmas cards with all bookings. t - 0131 237 5894 m - 07972 304 554 w - www.clearphotography.co.uk e - info@clearphotography.co.uk
