Some parents find it a struggle to enjoy family life and need a little support to get them back on their feet. Raising children under five without grandparents, extended family or friends can be hard work – especially if a parent is suffering from postnatal depression or has twins or even triplets. Home Link Family Support is a local charity that fills that gap in Edinburgh and Midlothian. Each family has different needs, so a visit can consist of anything from an encouraging chat with mum to engaging the children in positive play. Home Link needs more volunteers. Could you help? Many volunteers have had career breaks for their own kids and are looking for useful experience to help them move in a different direction such as social work, nursing and teaching. Others just want to offer support because they remember how bewildering and tiring life can be with little ones – and how wonderful it is to get a little encouragement. Gillian in Gilmerton has a visit from a volunteer befriender each week. ‘There were days I didn’t know what to do with myself,’ says the mother of three. ‘It really gave me some focus knowing she would be here every Monday. We’d been stuck in the house a lot. It was so great to go out, the kids loved it and it made me so happy seeing them enjoying themselves.’ Each volunteer is given three full days’ training. They also have the regular support of a project worker and are also encouraged to try lots of extra training courses such as first aid, mental health, the Scottish Book Trust’s Bookbug scheme and PEEP (Parents Early Education Partners). Could you be a Home Link volunteer? All it takes is two hours a week, a nonjudgemental attitude, reliability and a cheerful outlook. It’s simple but it works. Gardens have always been a place where children can let off steam and explore the natural world and at Gardening Scotland 2014 they can get the chance to do both. The national gardening and outdoor living show isn't just a place to find great plants, horticultural advice and inspiration, it is also a place where kids can have fun. From close encounters with honeybees and birds of prey in the Big Back Garden, to model railways, miniature pallet gardens created by school children and friendly experts who can explain everything about bugs, birds, butterflies and all the other sorts of wildlife that kids encounter when they play in the garden, there's plenty to keep them occupied at the national gardening and outdoor living show. Gardening Scotland takes place from Friday, 30 May until Sunday, 1 June at The Royal Highland Centre Edinburgh. Advance tickets cost from £13 and children under 16 go free. www.gardeningscotland.com
Tips to a simple and stress free spring clean Calling all • Kids zone - make sure there is a designated spot for children to ‘dump’ things when they get home from school (shoes, bags, homework, notices etc.). This avoids clutter and stress when you’re rushing out the door in the morning. Children can make or break this so get them on board! • De-clutter time – pick a shelf, worktop, table or any other surface and spend 5-10 minutes clearing all nonessential things to leave it looking neat and clutter-free. Build this into your daily routine and you’ll soon start to see a difference. Alternatively, think big and do a part or whole room all at once! • Recycling – have a bag, or box for rubbish, one for charity and one for items you might want to sell when you de-clutter – it’s then easy to dispose of items quickly and you don’t handle things twice. • Spring clean – throw open the windows and prioritise which areas or rooms you want to do first. Plan your time and start in one corner and work your way around. Think about carpets and furnishings too and don’t forget help is at hand if you don’t have the time but have the budget. ‘Simple Living’ provides practical home organisation advice and support from tidying, de-cluttering and storage solutions to planning and managing projects including selling and moving house, redecoration and renovations using ‘tried and tested’ tradesman. T: 07432 606639 E: linda.stein@kangacrew.com Hay fever is a common allergic condition that affects up to one-in-five people at some point in their life. Many people are allergic to trees, pollen and grass, and suffer from hay fever as a result, and once a person becomes sensitive to a given allergen, B cells produce IgE antibodies against it, which stimulates the release of histamines and causes the symptoms of sneezing, a blocked runny nose, and itchy, watery eyes. • Salt therapy helps by clearing up the mucus • It aids relief of congested and contracted airways • 100% natural and safe for any age • Salt is a natural antihistamine and by lowering IgE levels in your body it clears up the symptoms of hay fever As a result of the therapy breathing becomes easier and the immune system grows stronger making you more resistant to allergic reactions such as hay fever. Children can play here and they will not even realise they are under treatment! Osteopath Edinburgh Kid’s Sports Injuries and Inflexibility - Tom Kelman, Paediatric Osteopath at Osteopath Edinburgh. A lot has been said about the importance of stretching and flexibility in sport. Ryan Giggs and his work with Sarah Ramsden’s Sports Yoga are testament to the benefits of being sharp, supple and strong in elite sport. For kids growing rapidly and playing a lot of sport, stretching can often be overlooked. Your body can take the knocks, bangs and general micro-trauma so much better when you are flexible and your recovery after a game is quicker. Kids are more vulnerable during growth spurts when the muscles are lengthened by the rapidly growing skeleton, but the connective tissues (muscles and tendons) have not had time to catch up. Sports osteopathy and massage for kids can also help to lengthen and reduce tension in the hamstrings, quadriceps, knees, hips and ankles. So try and get your kids to do more stretching. Tom Kelman, BSc(Ost), DPO. Osteopath Edinburgh, 1 Wester Coates Ave., Edinburgh, EH12 5LS. Tel: 0131 346 0134 or 07866 299 250 or e-mail: tom@osteopathedinburgh.co.uk

Put the fun back into learning “Children learn better when they enjoy,” said Peter Price, chair of the National Primary Headteachers’ Association, in his recent submission to the largest review of primary education in 40 years. The Edinburgh Magikats Tuition Centre Principal said “We aim for children attending our centres to rediscover the joy of learning. Of course, effort must go in if progress is to be made but this is equally true of their other out of school activities – be they ballet or football. Children, at MagiKats, work to improve their Maths and English at carefully structured workshops. In addition to pencil on paper work, these sessions build in fun, multi-sensory activities, which our students complete under the guidance of trained tutors. This brings them the enjoyment and understanding that breeds success.” To find out more about MagiKats visit www.magikats.com or call 0131 554 5595.

School NewS Junior Award Scheme for Schools Junior Award Scheme for Schools (JASS) is an accredited learning programme for young people. It was first set up by Friends of the Award (Edinburgh and the Lothians) (FOTA) in partnership with City of Edinburgh Council where it is now used in a majority of the of primary, secondary and special educational schools. JASS is also being delivered by a growing number of schools across a range of local authorities across Scotland and in The p6 class spent a brilliant morning den building in the the private education sector. Hermitage, as part of the ‘Adventure’ section. JASS develops the whole individual by offering recognition in four key areas – regular physical activity (Get Active Stay Active), exploring a personal interest (My Interests), working for the good of the community or the environment (Me and My World) and completing an outdoor activity or challenge (Adventure). It is aligned with the objectives of Curriculum for Excellence and designed so that participants move from Bronze, to Silver and then to Gold with increasing levels of learning and challenge. Young people can join in with JASS at any level and each JASS programme can be constructed to meet the needs of the individuals or to tie in with local interests or projects. Susie Morgan, a teacher at South Morningside shares her experience of JASS. “At South Morningside we have over 100 children working towards their Bronze (in P6) and Silver (in P7) JASS awards. It is a wonderful way to give the children opportunities both to share their wider achievements and to encourage them to try new sports and Interests. The children have really enjoyed taking responsibility for achieving their JASS award. They have set themselves realistic targets to achieve and then kept a time sheet to show their progress and gathered evidence to show how they have achieved their targets. Our P6s have almost all finished their Bronze award and the sense of achievement is huge! We are planning a Presentation with parents and invited guests to celebrate everybody’s achievements.” JASS can start to prepare pupils in terms of work and enterprise skills and culture. These can be further developed within awards like DofE (Duke of Edinburgh’s Award), John Muir Award and 16+ Activity Agreements. One parent who is also a teacher commented “JASS is an absolutely fantastic way of encouraging and empowering young people, as well as recognising their achievements. It fits perfectly into the curriculum for excellence and it is a useful tool to evidence work being done.” For more information contact Joan Alexander, JASS Development Officer joan@jassschools.org.uk

Education with Added Sparkle Children in the ESMS Junior School have performed in some fantastic shows over the past couple of weeks. From a group of children who joined the cast of ‘Evita’ at the Edinburgh Playhouse with Marti Pellow, to ‘Tuishi Pamoja,’ ‘The Railway Children,’ and ‘Scheherazade’ in the schools’ Tom Fleming Centre, the children have been busy expressing themselves on stage. The 24 children who performed in ‘Evita’ enjoyed the experience of being on stage at the Edinburgh Playhouse immensely and are grateful for the excellent way they were looked after by all cast and crew members. This was the third occasion on which children of the ESMS Junior School have performed in 'Evita.' They also entertained diners at Giuliano's at Union Place, Edinburgh between their matinee and evening performances.
All children throughout the schools, aged from three to eighteen, are encouraged to take part in music, drama, art and dance and in the past have performed over 820 times in professional West End touring musicals since 1995 including over 220 appearances in ‘Joseph.’ The children will next appear in ‘Nabucco,’ ‘La Boheme’ and ‘Aida’ in March at the Edinburgh Playhouse, followed by 24 appearances in this year’s Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
School NewS St George’s Junior School Fun Activity Open Morning St George’s School for Girls, in Murrayfield, is running an open morning in the Junior School on 22 March. Girls from P1 – P5 are invited to take part in some action-packed activities. This includes ‘fascinating hands-on science’ in our dedicated junior school science room, a hockey skills session with our current international Scotland player, storytelling with the author of Princess Poppy and more. For parents there is an informal opportunity to tour the junior school, including the nursery, where they can visit the classrooms and meet and talk to teaching staff. St George’s is an all-through school and we have girls as young as two (or even younger in our pre-nursery) and as old as eighteen. Our curriculum is deliberately designed to be progressive and coherent, so that we know we are building on earlier learning and skills in a very supportive context. We are experts at teaching girls. Girls are given the time and care they need to be themselves, free from distractions and stereotypes, and in a supportive and friendly community. We are delighted that the school's excellent Advanced Higher results from 2013 have recently been formally recognised and that St George’s is at the top of the Best Schools' league table for Scottish Schools (ranked by Advanced Higher success at A and B grades). In 2012 The Financial Times named us as the top Scottish independent school for our Advanced Higher results. In the Junior School we provide education for 3 year-old children until the end of P5, when girls move to our Lower School for P6, P7 and S1. We also offer fully comprehensive day care for babies from 18 months. To help cater for the needs of busy parents, we provide additional services such as transport and wrap-around care. Boys are admitted up to pre-school. The nursery offers part-funded places through our partnership with Edinburgh Council. If you would like to find out more, please contact Mrs Karen Batty in Admissions by telephoning 0131 311 8008. Pre-booking of the open morning activity sessions is essential. You can also watch our videos on the value of a St George’s education at www.stge.org.uk/video.

GoodFood
Led by chef Nick Nairn, the Scottish Food Family aims to raise awareness of health inequalities, support the drive for better school meals and encourage the nation to work together to eat better. “I think getting kids cooking is so important. From as young as 3, 4, 5, give them a job when you're cooking, whether it's stirring, whisking, rolling [or] tasting”. Nick Nairn Backed by a range of top chefs, food campaigners and prominent Scots the key aims of the Scottish Food Family are to improve the nation’s relationship with food, to establish St Andrew’s Day as a national food celebration, to give all children great school meals and to give more priority to food education in schools. The Scottish Food Family believe children should leave primary school able to make a pot of soup and by the time they leave secondary school, every child should be able to make a meal for their family. The organisation also plans to highlight the cost of feeding a family by encouraging Scots to share the experience of living on the average weekly food budget. “Getting them to taste food is an important part of the process, for example, how different does a raw pepper and a roasted pepper taste? Make it informal, make it fun. There will be more mess than if you do it all yourself - but it's worth it (make sure they help clear up). And obviously you don't want to give a 3 year old a sharp knife, but judge your own child's ability. When they're ready, show them how to chop properly - with the tip of the blade resting on the board, and fingers out of the way! I'm convinced that children who become used to raw ingredients and cooking understand food better and will contribute to the Scottish Food Family aim of creating a better food culture. Happy Cooking!” Nick Nairn

ComesHome We are delighted that Nick Nairn and The Scottish Food Family have given us these fantastic recipes to share with Families Edinburgh readers. Linguine with Meatballs in Tomato Sauce
Seasonal Fruity Crumble
An all-time Italian classic – and a brilliantly useful meal to learn to make. The tomato and basil sauce for this makes a great Vegetarian option.
This one is apple and blackberry, my favourite, but you can use a variety of different fruits depending on the season and what’s available.
Serves 4 For the tomato sauce 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 small onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped small pinch dried chilli flakes 800g good-quality Italian tinned tomatoes Maldon salt freshly ground black pepper fresh basil
Serves 6 For the meatballs 300g minced beef 100g minced pork 1½ tbsp dry breadcrumbs 2 tbsp Parmesan, grated 1 tbsp flat parsley, chopped
½ onion, finely diced 1 egg yolk 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1½ tbsp extra virgin olive oil Maldon salt freshly ground black pepper
To serve 400g dried linguine or spaghetti Parmesan, grated or shaved basil, chopped
• First make the tomato sauce. Warm the olive oil in a thick-based pan, add the chopped onion and slowly sweat without colouring. After a few minutes add the garlic, dried chilli flakes and seasoning and cook for another 5 minutes. • Next add the tinned tomatoes and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer gently. While the tomato sauce is reducing down, assemble the meatballs. Place all the minced meat, breadcrumbs, Parmesan and parsley into a large bowl and, using your hands, mix thoroughly. Add the onion, olive oil, egg yolk and a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper and mix again. • Using clean hands divide the meatball mixture into small pieces and roll into balls. The size of a table-tennis ball is a good guide. • When you have all your meatballs ready, heat a medium-sized frying pan. Add the olive oil and fry, turning occasionally, until golden brown. You may need more oil as the meatballs absorb the oil during cooking. • When the meatballs are all coloured, add them to the tomato sauce and cook for roughly 15-20 minutes. Do ensure the meatballs are properly cooked. Finally check for seasoning and serve with olive oil, linguine or spaghetti and freshly shaved Parmesan, a couple of grinds of pepper and chopped basil.
2-3 big Bramley cooking apples, peeled, cored and chunkily chopped juice of ½ lemon 225g blackberries (pick your own or buy Scottish) 25g unsalted butter 125g golden granulated sugar For the crumble topping 250g plain flour 125g cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes 125g granola cereal 75g golden granulated sugar
• Preheat the oven to 200C/400C/Gas Mark 6. Melt the butter in a large pan, add the chopped apples, lemon juice and 125g sugar and cook for 5-10 minutes until they just begin to soften. Tip the mixture into a fairly shallow ovenproof dish. Place the whole blackberries on top. • To make the crumble, put the flour into a mixing bowl and add the butter. Using cold fingers (run them under a cold tap), rub in the flour and butter, lifting it high up to let the air in until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add the 75g sugar and cereal clusters and lightly rub in. • Sprinkle the crumble topping over the fruit. Here’s a magic tip: splash a few drops of cold water over the surface of the crumble with your hands – this gets you some lovely big crunchy, chewy lumps in the topping. Bake for about 20 minutes or until evenly browned. Serve warm with cream or vanilla ice cream.

PREGNANCY AND BABY
The Role of Reflexology for Fertility Issues Factors affecting fertility The ability to conceive depends on many different factors, but it is essential that both partners are in optimum health to enable this to happen.
What is Reproductive Reflexology? Reproductive Reflexology is a safe, non-invasive treatment which stimulates the body’s own natural ability to heal and rebalance. It involves using a combination of massage and gentle pressure techniques to reflex points and zones on the feet and/or hands. By applying pressure to these reflex points, the corresponding organs and/or systems within the body can be enhanced.
How can it help? Regular treatments may help to ease emotional or physical stress surrounding fertility and may also help to ensure your body is in optimum condition for conceiving, encouraging conception. Reproductive Reflexology may help to: • • • • • • •
Balance hormone levels Regulate ovulation and the menstrual cycle Boost blood circulation Relax the whole body Stimulate endorphin release – the feel good hormones Create a balanced environment for conception to take place Support through IVF and ICSI
Research Although there appears to be no substantial research into the effectiveness of reflexology for fertility issues it has been suggested that up to 50% of clients find themselves pregnant within 6 months of commencing treatment. The Association of Reproductive Reflexologists have been collecting data and initial figures show that for Reproductive Reflexology in a sample of 180 cases – 69% of couples conceived whilst receiving reflexology. These couples were experiencing a wide range of conditions from simple delays in conceiving to complex male and female reproductive conditions. My name is Anne Young and I am a Reflexologist specialising in Fertility and Maternity Reflexology. I have many years ‘experience of providing treatment and help for clients with fertility, and also during pregnancy and the postnatal period. In my experience, many clients I have treated that have encountered fertility issues have gone on to conceive and enjoy a normal healthy pregnancy. Pregnancy Massage Some women sail through their pregnancies, some experience a few niggles, while others discomfort or even pain. Reasons for wanting pregnancy massage range from wanting a bit of “me-time” to tired legs, back-ache, tight neck and shoulder muscles, or muscle spasm associated with Pubis Symphysis Disorder. Other reasons include support for all the emotional changes happening and labourpreparation, as in learning to “go inward” and focus on the internal body, for which massage is extremely helpful. Massage improves the circulation, it is good for tissue congestion and stimulates removal of metabolic waste; it is therefore good for mother and foetal tissue health, while helping to maintain normal blood pressure. Massage can also have a painreducing effect and ease many common complaints – leg cramps, stiff neck, swollen ankles, sciatica. It can relieve nausea and heartburn without drugs. Mums report positive experience of massage during labour. Pre-pregnancy postural issues leading to pelvic and spinal misalignment can be exacerbated during pregnancy. Pregnant Mums with their ever-changing bodies, are altering the loading on the spine, which creates myofascial tension and eventually the shape of the lower spine. Massage can help lengthen short, tight muscles, and bring attention to parts of the body that have been forgotten. In the first trimester clients may lie whichever way they feel most comfortable. By the Second Trimester they may lie face-up with a small pillow under the right hip. After 22 weeks safe positioning means side-lying, semi-reclining, and seated positions only. Having ones abdomen massaged when pregnant is a matter of choice. We would not massage over the abdomen in the first trimester or if there is a history of miscarriage.

Vodder Manual Lymphatic Drainage is especially good for pregnancy related oedema and pregnancy induced carpal tunnel. Reflexology, is another favourite for tired, achy feet, or because it can be very relaxing and easy to enter a meditative state. Post natal massage eases muscle strain of labour and birth, promotes recovery of the pelvic floor, boosts healing after a C-section and eases post-partum stress. Andrea has been a massage therapist for 16 years. She did her Pre and Perinatal Massage Therapy with Carole Osborne-Sheets and continues to train with the Scottish Massage Schools. She works from her clinic Revitalize, in EH9. www.revitalizeEdinburgh.co.uk At Revitalize we aim to provide nurturing touch, reduce stress, and give the Mum-to-be a cared-for experience. PREGNANCY AND BABY Harnessing the Power of Deep Relaxation in Pregnancy and Childbirth
Lothian HypnoBirthing
Wouldn’t it be great if someone said that the best opportunity for you and your baby to achieve a calm, natural birth experience is to relax… really relax... every day… during pregnancy?
Do you want to look forward to a safe, comfortable, natural birth? You can easily achieve this with Lothian HypnoBirthing.
Relaxation has profound benefits for both mother and baby. Enjoying a massage, calming music, or a warm bath allows your body to produce pleasure-inducing hormones called endorphins. These hormones cross the placenta divide, so when you are relaxing your baby is literally floating in a sea of happiness. Endorphins have other major benefits; they help reduce blood pressure and can lower the risk of preeclampsia. One natural endorphin has a pain-relieving power of 18-50 times that of morphine. Endorphins also inhibit the production of stress hormones, such as adrenaline, which can slow or even stall progress in birth. So, relaxing during childbirth can have a profound impact on making childbirth more comfortable and progress more easily. Relaxation can also help relieve insomnia, while deep breathing can help reduce swelling. Research shows that by breathing deeply, and visualising something positive, a mother is able to calm her baby’s heart rhythms in the womb. It is possible to use self-hypnosis, or deep relaxation, during pregnancy in order to harness the powerful benefits of endorphins in birth. You have likely been in ‘self-hypnosis’ several times today: perhaps driving the car on ‘autopilot’, or ‘daydreaming’ in a meeting. These moments indicate that the conscious, analytical part of your brain (the neocortex) has ‘switched off’. Instead you have slipped into using your ‘old brain’. If anything happened to ‘snap you out of it’ then you would revert to using your neocortex; for example, if a child kicked a football in to the road, or if your manager asked you a question! If we translate this to a birthing scenario, then for a woman to relax and ‘switch off her neocortex’ she needs to be in the right environment, both physically and mentally. Imagine what you would need if you wanted to get to sleep: dim lights, peace and quiet, security, privacy. This would allow you to relax your neocortex and drift off. It is the same in birth. A woman must feel safe and secure. Childbirth is a powerful, transformative experience. Yes, it is intense. But it doesn’t need to be unbearable. Many women instinctively ‘switch off’ and ‘go within’ during childbirth. However, it is possible to make this more instinctive by practicing relaxation. If you can teach your mind and body to relax on cue to music, visual imagery or other prompts then you can use these cues during birth to help you relax. Slow down and use what you enjoy, whether it is singing, massage, or relaxing with a guided visualisation. Harness your own natural power by practicing relaxation in pregnancy. What is HypnoBirthing? HypnoBirthing is a complete birth preparation programme that is simple, logical and suitable for all pregnant women and their birth companions, no matter what path your birth takes. Devised by Marie Mongan, the tried and tested, unique HypnoBirthing™ programme has been in existence for over 25 years. It is based on the philosophy that every birth can be calm, relaxed and rewarding. Women’s bodies are perfectly designed for the task of giving birth, however unfortunately years of conditioning have taught women that birth is a terrible, painful, medical event. Through specific HypnoBirthing techniques, you will be able to let go any fears and past birth traumas and rediscover birth as the wonderful, joyful event it can be.
HypnoBirthing Classes The course is taught over 5 weeks of 2.5 hour classes. Classes are arranged and taught by Kathryn Addison MA(Hons), MSW, DipSW, certified HypnoBirthing Childbirth Educator. Kathryn offers classes for you and your birth companion in small groups of up to 4 couples or privately in the comfort of your own home. Classes are available in Edinburgh, East Lothian and Midlothian. Through the HypnoBirthing course you will learn specific techniques of breathing, visualisation, relaxation and self-hypnosis, allowing you to birth your baby in comfort and calmness, while remaining in control, awake and aware throughout. You will learn about the physiology of pregnancy and birthing, allowing you to understand how women are designed to birth their babies naturally and easily, without pain. This will enable you to approach your birth with joy and without fear, from a position of knowledge and empowerment.
What are the benefits of HypnoBirthing? • reduced (and often no) medication use in labour • shorter labours • fewer C-sections • often pain free labours • fewer episiotomies • reduced rates of post natal depression HypnoBirthing also benefits your baby by giving him/her a natural and peaceful start to life. HypnoBirthing babies are often much calmer, breastfeed more easily and sleep better. The techniques you learn in HypnoBirthing classes will last you and your birth companion a lifetime and be useful in many situations.

PREGNANCY AND BABY Lynne Graham is a Chartered Physiotherapist with 25 years of post graduate experience, much of which has been gained within the specialist area of
Continence and Pelvic Health Being a Mum herself, Lynne knows only too well that the initial excitement of becoming pregnant can soon wear off when every movement we make causes pain or discomfort. It can be a very worrying time for the ‘Mum to be’ and unfortunately pelvic girdle pain (PGP) and low back pain are common but not 'normal' parts of pregnancy. Around 1 in 5 pregnant women experiences PGP which can mean pain over the sacro-iliac joints in the low back; pain in the symphysis pubis joint at the front; and also discomfort in adjacent areas such as the buttocks, groins and lower abdomen. As well as pain or discomfort women with PGP usually have difficulty walking, climbing stairs, standing one leg, turning in bed, and getting in and out of the car.

0131 346 0134 Natural relief from pain and discomfort
If you do find yourself suffering from pelvic or back pain during your pregnancy, a physiotherapist who specialises in women's health or pelvic health is ideally placed to help you to deal with the problem. They are specially trained to understand the changes which occur during pregnancy and all the various stresses that pregnancy and labour can put on your body. On your first appointment your physiotherapist will take a detailed history of your condition followed by a physical examination of your spine and pelvis. A treatment plan will be designed to help eleviate your symptoms, and to manage better any pain that persists. As well as ‘hands on’ joint or soft tissue mobilisation, you will be given advice on comfortable postures, sleeping positions and suitable exercises. Continence and Pelvic Health Physiotherapists also have a role to play post-nataly. This may involve treatment for anyone whose PGP has failed to settle (but don’t worry most pain gradually fades over the course of a few weeks), or it may be to help women deal with problems relating to continence. Unfortunately incontinence is fairly common in the post natal period due to trauma to the pelvic floor which occurs during the birth. Sadly many women suffer in silence when in fact the right Physiotherapist can help you relieve many of the problems you might be having. These problems may include leaking urine on exertion or when coughing or sneezing (stress incontinence) or you may have urgency incontinence where your bladder tries to empty too soon and you have to rush to the toilet, often only passing a small amount or urine. Your pelvic health physiotherapist will have been specially trained to assess your pelvic floor with a simple internal examination. She can let you know if there are any weaknesses or abnormal tensions in the muscles and teach you an exercise program to address the problem areas. Remember that these Physiotherapists are highly specialised and work in this way all day, every day and they are usually exceptionally good at making their patients feel comfortable and at ease.
Lynne’s Tips For Taking Care of Your Pelvis During and After Your Pregnancy • Stay gently active within the limits of your pain, but rest regularly • Ask for, and accept, help • Wear supportive shoes - sorry girls NO killer heels • Keep knees together when getting out of the car or turning in bed • Slow down - rapid walking or stair climbing will aggravate things • Don’t lift or carry anything heavy • Watch the way you sit, no leg crossing or sitting sidey ways on the couch • Pace yourself • Remember being pregnant or having a baby is a big deal - Look after yourself!
Good luck ladies, lets hope you never need a Pelvic and Continence Physiotherapist but please be reassured that good care is out there if it is required. Lynne Graham works within the Stockbridge and Davidsons Mains branches of Balanced Physiotherapy. You do not need a GP referral to see Lynne privately but if she felt you would benefit from medical intervention she would discuss that with you. You can arrange an appointment with her on 0131 315 3105.

PREGNANCY AND BABY
Support for parents
Ashley and Claire are both qualified and experienced Maternity Nurses. They have worked with both new and experienced parents all over the UK and abroad, offering support and advice in newborn care, routines, breastfeeding, good sleeping habits and much more. There are so many reasons why parents choose to hire a Maternity Nurse. It may be that they have moved away from home and don’t have a network of support around them. Others would rather have a professional with up to date advice on hand rather than the well intended, but possibly conflicting advice that comes from various generations of friends and family. Often it may be the Grandparents who give the gift of a Maternity Nurse if they are not able to offer the support needed themselves and feel this is the next best thing. Whatever the reason, the aim of a Maternity Nurse to make this time the most enjoyable start for the whole family. The most popular service is 24 hour care. To have someone in your home up to 6 days a week for as long as you need, offering advice, information and tips can put your mind at ease and give you the rest you need to aid your recovery, whether you have had a natural birth, planned or emergency cesarean section. You may think of a Maternity Nurse as a ‘Mother’ figure, an older woman there to tell you what to do and how you should do it and that may be true with some, but in Ashley and Claire’s case you couldn’t be further from the truth. They are both in their early 30’s and don’t have children of their own (yet!). They have been described as having a best friend or sister to stay for a while and pride themselves on the reputations they have made. Often being asked to return to families or recommended to friends and relatives. They have spent many years listening to parent’s needs, beliefs and wishes, what works for one family may not work for another, so they will tailor a routine that suits each and every family. They are also available to work days or nights, if your circumstances will not accommodate live in help. They do however get booked up months in advance, so in order to guarantee your dates, it is advisable to book your Maternity Nurse as soon as possible. It is Ashley and Claire’s aim to help as many families in Scotland as they can in any way they can. They offer many services including 24hour care, proxy parenting and consultations. To read more about Ashley and Claire’s background, services and testimonials from some of their families visit the website. PREGNANCY AND BABY
What are the Effects of Birth Shock and Stress on Babies?
Tom Kelman, Paediatric Osteopath at Osteopath Edinburgh. Something you may well be asking yourself, when your baby is crying or screaming constantly. Fussing and fretting during feeding and arching back or pulling away, rather than cuddling in, and making you the parent feel worried, tired and unhappy. This is a topic I feel very well qualified to write about, after more than 12 years of treating hundreds of new-borns and counselling their anxious exhausted parents. Help is at hand. One of the key factors in making a change that allows the baby to turn a corner and feel normal again inside its little body, is stress. Stress (the cause) and adrenaline (the effect) triggers the fight, flight, fright response in all of us, which can result in an over production of stomach acid when left un-treated. This causes muscle spasms and waves of pain in the chest, diaphragm, ribs and gut. What happens when being born is too quick, too long, too hard, too soft, a ‘C’ section, or being in the wrong position when coming down the birth canal? Many things can add to the complex and delicate communication that take place in the build up to and during the birth itself, between the mother, her uterus and the baby. Stress and birth shock causes babies to become over adrenalized, which may lead to an over production of stomach acid, resulting in GOR (gastro-oesophageal reflux), the same way it does in adults .The thermostat in their bodies gets turned up too high and they are sometimes unable to turn it down. The mother’s stress, worrying about her baby also turns up the stress volume too and a reflex cycle develops, so that it becomes a habit for the baby. Paediatric Osteopathy in the right hands can really help to bring the homeostatic balance back and allow the baby to feel something new. They soon realise that being calm and destressed is a much better feeling and right for their bodies. Within 3-4 visits you may find you have a different child. If you would like to discuss this topic more please feel free to get in touch.
Buggy Babes
We all know that being active in pregnancy and post birth boasts a fantastic list of health benefits for both mum and baby and it’s a great time to set new healthy lifestyle habits. These are not only immediately advantageous but provide a great role model for the next generation. However with our increasingly time stressed lifestyles it is easy to see why convenience takes over when the tiredness kicks in. Add that to an age of ‘mommy’ celebrities wearing impossibly high heels and being a size 0 within a few weeks of giving birth it is easy to see why ‘real mums’ can be disillusioned when they are still carrying the extra pounds months later and have an aching back. Pregnancy, childbirth and parenthood is a fantastic experience for most but it can also leave us feeling low in energy, exhausted, down in mood and, to use that technical phrase, ‘blobby’. ‘Buggy Babes’ is passionate about working with mums (mums to be also welcome) to get them feeling fit, active and healthy at this exciting time. Using safe and highly effective training the outdoor sessions harness all the feel good endorphins whilst the nutritional information provides a great resource for mums to really blast the baby bulge. The ‘Complete’ Programme integrates cardio, core, calmness and considerate eating – which combine to create optimum fitness and wellbeing results. It is very much a social event too with many mums at previous courses linking up for a post class coffee. The little people enjoy it too – especially when mum does squat claps singing 5 little ducks to them! It is generally suitable for 6 weeks post partum to 12-18 months. With 15 years in the fitness industry, Barbara, became hooked on teaching pregnancy and post natal classes when she decided to study the field when pregnant with her 1st child. Buggy Babes is now running at Cramond and BA Fitness provides a variety of training including a Run club, early hours Cobweb Blaster, Personal Training (1:1 & small group) and Corporate Fitness programmes.

PREGNANCY AND BABY
Baby Carriers Choosing a way to get your baby from A to B offers many options, including a huge range of prams, buggies and baby slings. A comfortable baby sling can be a great transport solution, and also so much more. It can let you get on with essential jobs at home while cuddling and comforting your baby; can be an enormous help when caring for a small baby and older children at the same time; and helps you go many more places than you can manage with a buggy - beaches and hills are straightforward when your baby is in a sling, not to mention going up and down steps or in and out of narrow doorways, a great help in Edinburgh! When looking for a carrier, it is important that you can meet the TICKS safe carrying rules - your baby should be held TIGHTLY; IN CLEAR VIEW without having to move any fabric; CLOSE ENOUGH TO KISS the top of their head; should KEEP CHIN OFF CHEST, ensuring your baby is not slumped or pressed into a position where their chin is on their chest and their airway could be obstructed; and should SUPPORT their back in the natural curve for small babies. Another important factor is looking for a carrier that can give support from knee joint to knee joint, bringing your babies knees higher than their bottom, so that they are seated down into the sling and their legs are not dangling straight down. This supports your babies hip joints as they are still developing. The easiest way to choose a carrier which suits you and your little one is to see the carriers in person and try them out. Edinburgh parents have more and more choices now, with a Sling Library and Sling Meet available, where you you can meet other parents using slings and try some out. Another great way to see a wide range of slings and carriers is to make an appointment at Closer to You - based in Morningside, appointments are relaxed and friendly with no obligation to make a purchase and a wide range of carriers to choose from. Closer to You has been running since 2007, working with many parents to help them find a great sling for carrying their baby or toddler. More details are available at www.closertoyou.co.uk There are a number of high street carriers, but Closer to You concentrates on cloth baby slings and carriers based on traditional carrying methods from around the world. Cloth carriers hold your baby close to you and spread their weight across your body.
The main kinds of cloth baby carrier are: Wraparound Carriers, made with either stretchy or woven fabric; Carriers with Straps, including soft structured buckle carriers and mei tais; and one shoulder carriers such as Ring Slings and Pouches. Many parents will choose one carrier to take them from baby to toddler. Some of Closer to You favourite birth to toddler carriers are the Manduca Baby Carrier, which has a built in newborn insert and a height adjuster to support taller babies and toddler; and woven wraps from Storchenwiege, a very supportive purpose made woven wrapround carrier which will support small babies through to bigger toddlers.
Some Closer to You favourite choices for different stages: Newborn babies – stretchy wraparound carriers are great as they can be put on in the morning and kept on, perfect when your baby wants to be held a lot, or when you are caring for a bigger child at the same time. Toddlers or heavier babies – carriers which spread the weight across your waist and shoulders, such as padded waist band soft structured carriers like the Manduca Baby Carrier or Beco Soleil; Toddlers starting to walk – when your wee one wants to get up and down a lot a ring sling can be a great choice to tuck in your bag for a comfortable carry home when small legs get tired

Parent Parent Debbie Dewar is a Dental Hygienist at Morningside Drive Dental Practice, she lives in Fairmilehead with her 2 children, Ava 4 and Mason 2, and her husband Malcolm.
Favorite shop: Toys Galore in Morningside, we can spend a lot of time and pocket money in here, for different clothes for kids we wander up to Nippers in Bruntsfield, great clothes and something a wee bit different! Favourite park: For us it has to be Vogrie country park, we spend many a Sunday afternoon there, the kids love it and it tires them out … and us! We are within walking distance of Faimilehead Park which is also good. Favourite children’s club/class: For Ava it has to have been Water Babies - worth its weight in gold, she is so confident in the water and a good wee swimmer. Both attended Monkey Music - it’s a brilliant class, great fun and Lisa does a brilliant job! A-star sports is also highly recommended, Mason counts down the days until a Monday when he can spend an hour kicking and chasing footballs, running and jumping, the hour flies in and at the end is a tired, but happy wee boy! Favourite day out: Gullane beach is a favorite, collecting shells and chasing the waves, even on a cold day this can be fun, a picnic lunch and a look around Gullane then home! Favourite child friendly restaurant: We visit Café Cucina in Morningside quite a lot as it is near the practice, with or without kids it’s a great place, food very tasty and kids love their bambicino’s! Favourite eco-friendly moment: We recycle as much as we can, recently saving up our empty milk bottles for the nursery to make a greenhouse, a good way to teach the kids where recycling can be used. No parent should be without: A Maclaren buggy, don’t know where we would be without it, fits in the car boot easily, and the covers wash well. We still use ours along with a buggy board, a must! Parenting pet hates: People who park in the mother and baby parking spaces and they clearly don’t have any children with them. Parenting high points (what makes it all worthwhile): A smile, cuddles and giggles melt my heart every time! Funniest comment (from child): Ava: Grandma, why is your arm so wobbly, are the bones broken here? Grandma: no Ava, that’s just what you call “bingo wings”! Favourite family holiday spot: We have been to Ribby Hall near Lytham now a few times, every time has been great, so much to do. Ava loves the horse riding and Mason can spend hours in the adventure park, swimming and soft play good for a rainy day. The cottages are well equipped for families. Best children’s book: Both love the Gruffalo and Room on the Broom. Aliens in Underpants always gets a giggle. Best DVD: Ava loves The Wizard of Oz; she even has a Dorothy dressing up dress. Mason’s favorite is The Jungle Book; he has the dawn patrol marching down to a T! Most played with toys: Both will do jigsaws at high speed, but Mason does love his train set and cars, Ava will spend hours dressing up in her many princess costumes. Biggest waste of money: We bought a Phil and Teds double buggy once Mason was born, we rarely used it and ended up selling it after 6 months, the original Mothercare buggy was enough for us. Why you like living where you do: Edinburgh is a fantastic city, we love living and working here, there is so much to do at any time of the year, we can be in the city in 20 mins but also be in the country side in 5. Work is a 7 min commute! We are sure that even as Ava and Mason get older, there will always be something for us in Edinburgh.

Get Nappy Happy with help from the Real Nappy Project Parents are discovering that nowadays real nappies are not just cotton squares which can be difficult to fold and fiddly to pin. Modern nappies are soft, absorbent, shaped, easy to put on and come in a range of quick-drying fabrics. They now have elasticated legs, Velcro or poppers so that every baby, whatever their size and shape, can have a really good-fitting real nappy which doesn’t leak. Some real nappies have an all-in-one design which includes a built in waterproof outer layer, so that they are just as easy to put on as a disposable – even the babysitter will be able to manage! And real nappies can have a lower impact on the environment, even when you take into account the manufacturing process and the washing and drying. Using real nappies could save 120 black bin bags of waste per child going to landfill. They are good for your pocket too buying real nappies instead of disposables can save you at least £500, more if you buy them second hand or use them on a second child. Plus they come in so many colours and patterns that your ‘real’ baby will look ‘real’ cute.
Money saving incentives The Real Nappy Project, run by environmental charity Changeworks, offers incentives for those living in Edinburgh. Trial packs include £45 worth of nappies and accessories to help parents make an informed decision when choosing reusable nappies. Lending kits contain thirty nappies of eight different styles so that parents can test which types of nappy suits their baby and their lifestyle. Both the pack and kit are £12 each for people living in Edinburgh. If you are a Lothians resident, please get in touch to ask about costs.
Real nappy volunteers – their ‘real’ experiences Real Nappy Project volunteer Sarah Taylor and her daughter Maisie are big fans of real nappies. Sarah says: “They are just as easy to use as disposables. I don’t have loads of rubbish bags to dispose of and best of all, there’s no whiffy smell!” Some people may be concerned about using real nappies because they add to the already-large washing pile, but volunteer Jo Nickson had a different experience. She says: “Even when I had two children in nappies I only washed nappies twice a week. I bought mine second hand so I was able to buy loads – about 35 in a particular size. I had three buckets for storing the dirty ones, but they all fitted into one wash. This way, I only did a wash every three days, it allowed enough drying time, and I never ran short of nappies.”
Meet other parents to find out more Come along to a free ‘Nappuccino’ event run by Changeworks to check out what real nappies are available, buy a trial pack or order a lending kit, buy great value second hand nappies, and meet other parents who have decided to ‘go real’. Nappuccinos take place on the last Thursday of every month at Duncan Place Resource Centre in Leith. The next events are on 27 March and 24 April 2014: drop in anytime between 10 and 11.30am.
The Great Nappy Change! The Real Nappy Project will take part in another Guinness World Record Great Nappy Change in April. Last year, thirty one parents and babies helped break the previous world record: 8,301 participants in 180 different countries changed their real nappies simultaneously. This year we are coming together again to celebrate real nappies and help beat our own record! It takes place in the morning of Saturday 26 April in Edinburgh. Please contact us to book your place.
Contact us: If you are interested in giving real nappies a go, have any questions or would like to volunteer, please get in touch with the Real Nappy team: Call 0131 555 4010 Email realnappies@changeworks.org.uk Visit www.changeworks.org.uk and sign up to our blog.

Jo also recommends using a pulley airer if you have a room with high ceilings – the heat rises, allowing cotton nappies to dry in 24 hours. Volunteer Jenn Bow and her son Iain also use real nappies. Jenn likes them because of the environmentally friendly natural fibres and the cost savings. Jenn’s top tip for new parents is: “If this is your first baby, don’t try to use real nappies right from the beginning. Get used to life with your new wee one – it can be a huge adjustment. Start using real nappies a few weeks later when you can give them a proper go.”
