ISSUE 81 November/December 2013
Welcome to the November/December issue of Families Edinburgh! It was early in September when sightings of the chubby red man started for me, talk of ice rinks, fairy lights, markets and snow. But I’ve had to hold it all in. Chastised for saying the C word in September I’ve twitched through October fit to burst with good cheer. But now it’s November and I can let it out..... CHRISTMAS, CHRISTMAS, CHRISTMAS... there, I said it!

Time to play
6 - 7.30pm on the first Wednesday of every month.
Sometimes a little more space to play can be of benefit to children with additional needs, that’s why Maddie and Mark's Play Town now open exclusively for these children on a Wednesday night. Ball Pool, Surf Rider and Zoopa Cannon are just some of the fun to be had in Play Town. There’s even a mini supermarket, shoe shop and garage. Plus, while the kid’s fuel their imagination, you might even get chance to re-fuel with some tasty treats in our waterside cafe. These sessions are for parents/carers and their children with additional needs only - siblings welcome. Call 0131 555 1900 to book your space. www.maddieandmarks.co.uk This initiative is sponsored by Music Bugs. www.musicbugs.co.uk/national-nursery-rhyme-week
How do children learn a language? How do they learn their very first words? Do we as parents play a role in this process? Do the words we say influence our children’s language development? A team of researchers at the University of Edinburgh have been exploring these questions. They use simple experiments that monitor children’s eye gaze to help us understand what information matters to young infants in the early stages of word learning. In these studies, young toddlers and their parents are invited to ELfLanD (Edinburgh Laboratory for Language Development), a new research lab located at 7 George Square for a short 30-minute session. During the experiment, which takes only about 5 minutes, children sit on their parents’ lap and view short child-friendly videos. The researchers then analyze the looking patterns of all children to see what it is that toddlers pay attention to when they learn a new word. The project is currently launching its longitudinal study. In this study the researchers are interested in the relationship between the language children hear from their parents/carers and the language they acquire. Participants record conversations between themselves and their child when their child is 9, 15 and 21 months old. They also complete questionnaires describing their child’s language acquisition. At the end of each session, the parents are rewarded with high street vouchers, but they also receive a copy of the questionnaire about their child’s language development so they can remember in years to come what their child could say at various developmental stages. If you are interested in learning more about ELfLanD or if you would like to participate in the studies, you can check their website (http://www.ppls.ed.ac.uk/elfland/) or email elfland@ed.ac.uk. If you want to volunteer for the longitudinal study, you can email Nicola Davies at ndavies2@staffmail.ed.ac.uk.

When fully implemented, around one million children across Scotland will have the chance to be immunised. Some primary school-aged children will also be offered the nasal vaccine by community nurses within their own school. Suffolk House Nursery might be a high quality learning environment for children from six months to five years old ... but it's also fun! Parents, whose children attend nursery, want them to learn as much as they can so that when it comes to the time for “big school” they are well prepared, have had a head start and are confident enough to go out into the wider education community … the children just want to play with their friends. At Suffolk House we take great pride in the fact that our children are closely following the Curriculum for Excellence and enjoying every minute of it in a safe, warm and stimulating environment, combining learning and play seamlessly. Our recent full refurbishment makes Suffolk House an oasis in the city centre, with ample off-road parking to allow parents to drop off and pick up in complete safety. The children also have the experience of our wonderful garden in what is considered by many to be Edinburgh's finest outdoor learning space. We cater for children from all over the City, and we are open 51 weeks of the year from Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm. We are regulated by the Care Inspectorate and Her Majesty's Inspector of Education … and like our children we always aim for top marks! Our team of dedicated professionals are led by strong leaders which allow us to deliver a full and varied curriculum which is play based. We have a strong CPD programme and annual staff appraisals are designed to encourage staff to be aware of their strengths and weaknesses and encourage them to reach their full professional and personal potential. All qualified staff are checked against the SSSC register and all staff have positive PVG checks carried out prior to start of employment to ensure their fitness to work with children. www.suffolkhousenursery.com 0131 667 0778

Helping children develop physically, academically, socially, and emotionally through movement, balance and rhythm is fundamental and should be a part of every child’s life. The basic physical skills such as throwing, catching, walking balance beams, skipping, are an integral part of our balance and rhythm capabilities. Many parents and teachers will remember that in ‘our day’ these playground activities were the norm. Nowadays, many children spend much of their free time in front of TV screens, playing computer games, with minimal physical activity. For our children to have healthy, strong brains and bodies, daily physical activity such as walking, swimming, cycling, trampolining, skipping, ball skills are beneficial for developing stronger neural connections in the brain. Learning differences such as dyslexia, dyspraxia (DCD), dyscalculia, dysgraphia, ASD, ADHD affects 10% - 15% of the UK population with 4% seriously affected (statistics from BDA). The effects of having a learning difference may lead to loss of self-confidence, depression and feelings of failure. Jane Oliver at Brightbrain Scotland helps children and adults to develop focus, attention skills, self-esteem, reading, writing, maths, speech & language, memory and organisational skills through the Bal-A-Vis-X programme, rhythmic Balance, Auditory, Vision, eXercises. A fun programme designed for everyone, at school, home or the workplace, Bal-A-Vis-X will create a buzz! LOCAL CHILDREN’S BUSINESS SEES DRAmATIC gROwTH! Local business Pyjama Drama, which offers drama and imaginative play classes for children, has proved so popular with parents, nurseries and schools that it is expanding. While head office is recruiting for people to set up their own Pyjama Drama businesses across the rest of Scotland, the Glasgow franchise owner Lisa Armstrong has taken on two new teachers to cope with demand. Lisa explained what she enjoys about having her own business, “I’ve been running Pyjama Drama in Glasgow for over 18 months and taking on the business was the best decision I ever made, I have control over my working hours, earn a great income and of course the classes are loads and loads of fun. By doing this as part of a franchise I have all the support of head office but still the freedom of the fact that it’s my business. I have big plans to expand and open more classes in Glasgow and to work with more and more nurseries and schools.” In Aberdeen the classes are equally as popular, with franchise owner Dini Dubber about to take on her second session leader. Loretto – Getting out there Loretto is a school that focuses on mind, body and spirit. Nothing epitomises this more than their tradition of venture training and exploration. All juniors from P4 have at least one trip away a year. They progress into the senior school with a camping and bonding expedition for 12 year olds in their first two weeks, then the activities of the combined cadet force, camping, training, prefects assessments in Skye, Duke of Edinburgh award expeditions that include pony trekking, mountain biking, hiking and more. The programme for the very adventurous culminates in the Borealis society bi-annual expedition. This past summer 7 Sixth Form pupils and two members of staff have successfully returned from a 30-day mountaineering expedition to East Greenland. The group trained for 18 months prior to embarking on this venture including taking part in a practice expedition to Borrowdale in the English Lake District in March in temperatures (in the valley of -10°C). The expedition had a strong academic focus and, as always with the Borealis Society, a substantial programme of visiting lecturers visited the school in the 12 months leading up to the departure to talk on a variety of topics with northern themes. Get in touch with admissions@loretto.com or Vicegerent Nigel Bidgood to hear more about the various programmes. nbidgood@loretto.com

A unique family of schools Joining the ESMS Nursery is the first step of a unique education from 3 to 18 that gives every boy and girl the opportunity to reach his or her full potential in schools which encourage a commitment to excellence based on a strong set of core values, endowing them with confidence and respect for themselves and others. Encouraging every child to blossom The first thing you notice on visiting our Nursery is happy, motivated children playing in wonderful grounds. Girls and boys can join from aged 3, or as a 4 year old for their Preschool year. At age 3, they will play in our airy, purpose-built Snowdrop Room, which includes a dedicated art and craft space as well as areas to be busy or rest with friends. Within our preschool rooms, every child is nurtured in all aspects of development by fully-qualified teachers and experienced early years staff. Regular sessions of music, dance and ICT are provided. The children then move seamlessly into Primary 1, located in the same building, without any need for parents or children to worry about P1 entry assessments. Holiday club is available throughout the school holidays. For further information, please contact our Admissions Secretary. Tel: 0131 311 1111 Email: admissions@esms.org.uk
The annual round of Open Days at Edinburgh’s independent schools – when the schools throw open their doors and welcome visitors – is reaching its end for another year. But visitors are, of course, welcome at other times during the school year, to see the schools "at work". So don’t hesitate to call the Admissions Secretaries in schools to arrange appointments. As most of Edinburgh’s independent schools operate at capacity each year, and some have waiting lists, they usually require applications to be submitted in November or December – for entry the following August – so you should check closing dates with individual schools. Entrance assessments usually take place in January, February and early March and places are offered in March. For further information, visit www.scis.org.uk/for-parents/entrance-procedures/ or contact individual schools directly.

Parent Parent Clare is the owner of Downes Opticians in Leith where both her and Linda are Optometrists. Clare is mum to Harrison (18 months) and Linda is mum to Ciara (31⁄2) and Connor (2). Both live with their families in North Edinburgh and we’re delighted to share their gems of local knowledge with you. Favourite shop:
Clare: Treehouse in Stockbridge is a great wee independent children's shop, with lots of choice and also provide a children's hairdressing service I haven't quite been brave enough to use (nothing to do with them!) Linda: Ginger Lily on South Trinty road for last minute presents and cards. They are so friendly and patient with sticky fingers.
Favourite park:
Clare: It has to be Inverleith with the play park, the ducks, the views, loads of room to kick footballs and the abundance of doggies, it provides endless entertainment. Linda: Victoria Park because we always run into someone we know..
Favourite children's club/class: Clare: Council run swimming classes, we use the one at Glenogle
as we can walk there. Harrison's confidence in the water has improved greatly and who doesn't like splashing around to nursery rhymes.
Linda: Trinity Toddlers. It is so relaxed and gives me a great chance to chat about any toddler conundrums. We’ve made brilliant friends there over the years!
Favourite day out: Clare: Ooh this is a tricky one, as we are members of the Zoo we are there an awful
lot, favourites being the penguins and the chimps. However I am looking forward to Harrison being a little older so we can take full advantage of East Links farm park, we love it there too. Linda: Edinburgh Zoo because we have an annual pass, as do a lot of our friends, so it is a great place to meet up and there is so much to do that we never get bored.
Favourite child friendly restaurant:
Clare: We love La Piazza on Shandwick Place, the food is yummy and in true Italian style all the staff are super child friendly.
Linda: The Orchard at Canon Mills because they always make you feel welcome and genuinely enjoy their youngest guests.
Proudest Eco - friendly moment:
Clare: Recycling old spectacles for the third world. I work with the charity Vision Aid Overseas, where we go to the poorest countries in the world providing eye examinations and spectacles free of charge. These countries do not have accessibility to eye care so we can make a huge difference to each individual. We collect spectacles all year round so get all your old spectacles and drop them into the practice.
Linda: I have started recycling in the last few months and I love the fact that the children are up for it too! I think the proudest point was when my husband was convinced too!
Best planet saving tip:
Clare: Recycle everything you possibly can, including clothing etc. Just a little effort from each of us can make a significant difference.
Linda: Simple - recycle!
No parent should be without: Clare: Wine (!) or Baby wipes. Linda: Good friends and a reliable babysitter for when you need to be just you again.
Parenting pet hates:
Clare: Spending ages creating a nutritious toddler meal from scratch only to have it rejected without even tasting it, Grrr! Linda: It has to be running late; I always try to fit too much in.
Parenting high points: Clare: Laughing out loud everyday, I do not remember laughing everyday before Harrison arrived.
Linda: When they are happy, and even better behaving well, it makes you think you are doing okay after all.
Most embarrassing moment:
Clare: My flip flop breaking beyond repair whilst playing at Inverleith Park which resulted in me having to walk through Stockbridge barefooted to buy a replacement pair, thank The Lord for the abundance of charity shops!
Linda: In Pizza express on the way for a nappy change my 2 year old lay down and his nappy leaked on Pizza Express’ floor and I was frantically trying to clean it up whilst holding on to him keeping him up right.
Funniest comment:
Clare: A friends daughter once said in the park, quite loudly, "mummy, why does that woman have a moustache?"... Awkward! Linda: We were talking about the teachers at nursery and my 3.5 year old asked me if Clare was my teacher!
10 FAMILIES EDINBURGH ISSUE 81
Most played with toys:
Clare: All we need in our house is collection of balls, he is football and rugby mad but he also likes anything by happyland. Linda: Matching buggies, they each have one and love to load them up with as much as possible and spin around the house playing.
Biggest waste of money:
Clare: A sit in baby walker, which Harrison hardly used, he much preferred his push along one.
Linda: Rushing to buy a leotard and ballet shoes only for my daughter to decide she didn’t want to go anymore! So I gave them away then less than a year later she has started again and loves it! Back to the shop we go!
Favourite family holiday spot:
Clare: Bamburgh in Northumberland. Only a short distance away yet the beach and the backdrop of the castle is just breathtaking. There is also lots to do in Northumberland even if the weather isn't great. Linda: We often go up to Dunblane hydro for a night, really just to use the pool and so I don’t have to cook and clean up.
Best children's book:
Clare: For Harrison's age (18 months) we love Room on the Broom or The Gruffalo (of course).
Why you like living where you do:
Clare: We are only a short walk from Inverleith park, the Botanics and Stockbridge so we very lucky to have everything on our doorstep, I just love it! The car barely gets moved these days. And when there is the odd Mummy and Daddy night out, there are plenty of nice restaurants and bars in walking distance. Linda: This area has such a strong community especially amongst young families, there is plenty to do with young children, you never get bored.

Let them fight their own battles
Are you forever rushing into school to talk to your child’s teacher, or phoning other parents to talk about playground squabbles? Think again, says Joanna Moorhead, a mother of By Joanna Moorhead four daughters.
One of my daughters is disgruntled. I am, she says, a bad mother. “Other mums support their children,” she says. “When they have a problem, the mums go into school to talk to the teachers. You never do that.” She’s not entirely correct; I’ve had children at school for the last 15 years or so, and there might have been one or two occasions when I’ve gone in to talk to a teacher or a head outside of parent-teacher meetings. But I could certainly count those times on the fingers of one hand; and, thinking about it, probably even on one finger.

I hope I’m not a bad mother; and I know there are some problems – and bullying is foremost among them – when a meeting with a teacher has to be arranged, and fast. But bullying apart, I believe that my daughters are better helped if I hang back from making appointments, and arm them instead to negotiate their own issues, and fight their own battles, at school. Why so? Well, the raison d’etre of parenting is to make your child independent: and it seems to me that if I wade in at every opportunity to smooth my child’s path in life, I’m not helping her to learn to do it for herself. And what message does it give if, when she tells me about a problem she’s experiencing, my response is to say ‘I’ll come in to talk to your teacher about that’?

g n i y l l u B National Anti-Bullying Week takes place 18-22 November this year, with the theme ‘The Future is Ours: Safe, Fun and Connected.’ As always, the AntiBullying Week website is packed with resources for schools, parents and children, plus online workshops, practical resources and short films on how to survive bullying. You can also join the Anti-Bullying Roadshow which tours schools, youth clubs and parents groups throughout the UK during November. Powerful, fun and exciting, the Roadshow includes music, science, strategies and up-to-date research and information on bullying. Check out the website too for their Anti-Bullying Village for Kids and Teens – a virtual space created by young people for young people where you can interact with others, as well as find out about events on school bullying, violence, racism and xenophobia through workshops, young people’s conferences and exhibitions. www.antibullyingweek.co.uk

What it says is: you can’t sort this out for yourself; you’re not smart enough or capable enough or eloquent enough. You can’t do it, but I can. And that doesn’t help my daughter develop those skills, and it doesn’t help her become experienced and confident at learning to problem-solve for herself. Sometimes, over the years, my daughters’ problems have been significant ones – and certainly many of them have seemed significant to my daughters, even if they didn’t seem all that important to me. On at least one occasion, the problem has been a clash between them and a teacher, and listening to the story it’s been difficult not to agree that, yes, it sounded as though the teacher was in the wrong. But this is what I tell my daughters: teachers are only human. Teachers, like everyone else in the world, have some people they like better than others. So of course it’s possible that a teacher might not favour you, might even pick on you, because he or she doesn’t like you. And, yes, of course it’s a terrible shame if you end up with an unfriendly-seeming teacher in a subject you really love. But rather than race in to school to have it out with the teacher, I tell my daughter to find a way of dealing with it; and if possible, I help her work out what that might be. Could she start the ball rolling on building a better relationship with the teacher in question by being nicer to her, or by working harder in the subject, or by making more contributions in class? Because the truth is that, all through life, there will be individuals who will seem to stand in the way of what we want – and learning to work with these people, or round them, is a hugely important life skill. Talking to your child about what’s going on will also help her process her own feelings; and again, this is an important learning curve. Help your child see that it’s not the case that someone has got it in for her, but maybe just that the teacher or the other child has issues in their own life. And instead of encouraging your child into negative feelings (“that teacher/child has always been a total pain, I’ve been saying it for years”) turn things round into something positive (“everyone has bad days; what could you do tomorrow that could start to improve this relationship?”). Similarly problems with other children: I long ago made a resolution never, ever to get involved at parental level over my daughters’ squabbles. Not only is life far too short, but more importantly, learning to get on with their peers is what childhood and adolescence is for. None of this means, by the way, that I’m abdicating responsibility for how my girls behave. It’s just that talking to other adults isn’t how I believe my offspring will learn to treat others well; that comes, I think, from modelling what I hope are good relationships in my own life, and in listening to the issues they have in their lives (when they want to talk about them) and helping them find a way of dealing with them. So it’s really important to make time to listen when they’re experiencing problems at school; and it’s crucial to validate how they’re feeling, to reflect back that I understand their worries and can see that it’s a genuine issue. But what should happen next is far more about equipping them to go back into school and work out how to put the problematic relationship on track, than it is about grabbing your coat and racing in to try to solve the difficulties yourself.

Balanced Physiotherapy have been established for over 11 years and are now one of the biggest private Physiotherapy providers in Edinburgh. The range of treatments on offer is extensive, with each professional having their own area of expertise. Families readers may be particularly interested to know that one of the Physiotherapists specialises in ante/post natal pelvic pain and continence problems. The Osteopath is also experienced in this field and is qualified to treat babies with the gently but highly effective Craniosacral Therapy. Balanced Physiotherapy is also home to an Orthopaedic consultant who works with both adults and children and spends most of his working week between Sick Kids and the Royal Infirmary. One thing is for sure, at Balanced Physiotherapy you can expect to be seen by experienced, professionals who have a teamwork approach to all your healthcare needs. If your Physiotherapist thinks you need Orthotics for your shoes, they have a Podiatrist on hand to make them, if they think your diet might be affecting your health then there is a Nutritionist on hand to advise you. However, please don’t think you need to have something physical wrong with you to visit the team there as their Massage and Beauty Therapy services are one of the most
popular requests. They have also recently added a Hypnotherapist to the team who uses techniques such as Emmotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Neurolinguistic Reprogramming (NLP) to help clients change unwanted behaviours such as Phobias or Anxiety. Whatever your Health and Well Being needs, Balanced Physiotherapy really is ‘the place to get better’. The 3 practices are located in the heart of Stockbridge; Davidsons Mains and the most recent to open is within the Sports Academy at Heriot Watt University’s Ricarton campus. info@balancedphysiotherapy.co.uk tel 0131 315 3105

Asthma can develop at any age. One in 11 children has asthma and it is the most common long-term medical condition. Asthma causes periodic attacks of wheezing and difficulty in breathing. Periodic attacks are caused by an over sensitivity of the lungs and airways, which overreact to certain “triggers” and become inflamed and clogged. Salt therapy is a clinically proven, 100% natural and safe therapy which helps to prevent and alleviate the symptoms of Asthma. • 85 - 95% of children become symptom-free after just a few sessions. • This effect is long term • After 10 - 12 months regular medication has been reduced by 65 -75% • The treatment definitely improves children’s quality of life. Salt therapy focuses on the source of the problem rather than just suppressing the symptoms. It has already helped thousands of children and adults suffering from Asthma, Eczema, Hay Fever, Sinusitis, COPD, Bronchiectasis, Bronchitis, Cough, Cystic Fibrosis and other respiratory illnesses. Salt is a natural antihistamine, antiviral and antibacterial, so being able to inhale such fine particles into the entire respiratory system helps relieve any inflammation, breaks up mucus and relieves congestion. Children can play here and they will not even realize that they are under treatment! The Salt Cave, Meadowbank, Edinburgh, is open 7 days a week, and your first session is free! 0131 510 1091 www.saltcave.co.uk
a stress free christmas
hristmas is coming! - Does this fill you with joy or anxiety? Maybe a mixture of both? Christmas can be a very special time, whether we focus on the spiritual, religious experience or the social, family one. However, for some of us Christmas can be very stressful, evoking painful memories and experiences. The expectations we carry at this time can be overwhelming, both physically and emotionally as we strive to keep up with the organisational demands and fulfil the hopes and dreams often associated with this season. How can we journey through the weeks prior to Christmas and remain peaceful and hopeful rather than flustered and drained?

Jenny is a midwife based in Edinburgh and mother to four sons. “Through my work with families, I have become aware of the great need for many of us to find balance amongst the stresses and traumas we face within our lives and work. I was introduced to Capacitar almost a year ago and have been using it in my life to great benefit”. Capacitar is a grassroots, popular education process - not a therapy. It puts the skills in your hands for your own use in your daily life. It is a Spanish word meaning “to empower, to encourage, to bring one another to life”. Although it has been growing and developing over the last 25 years across many countries it only arrived in Scotland 2 years ago. Evidence shows that Capacitar practices reduce stress, anxiety, trauma, negative thoughts and memories, while building resilience. It enables you to develop practical skills to improve your emotional and physical wellbeing and live a healthier life. Through simple practices which encourage healing of body, mind and spirit and self resilience, Capacitar creates the opportunity to nurture ourselves, while listening and responding to the deeper wisdom we all hold inside. This can transform our lives and those of our friends and families. Jenny is offering special workshops and sessions in December at Knotstressed in Blenheim Place, Edinburgh. These sessions provide time out in a nurturing, safe environment, with a background of relaxing and soothing music. You can unwind and relax while discovering very simple ways to help keep you calm and resilient during the preparation for Christmas and over the Christmas period. For more information contact jennypatterson@knotstressed.com Or visit www.knotstressed.com A big headache at this time of the year when the whole family is busy is feeding everyone - or even just thinking about what to feed everyone. We’ve just tried a Hello Fresh box which arrives direct to your door. I’ve ordered shops online before but I will be honest - it’s never been as exciting as ripping open a Hello Fresh box! Full of the freshest ingredients, perfectly portioned out, for four days’ worth of dinners for a family of four. With the recipes. It is, quite frankly, brilliant! My kids loved emptying the box and spreading it across the table. All your ingredients are there in the right portion size and you just need to gather up the ones you need to go with the right recipe. The kids thought it was like taking part in a TV cookery show and that is definitely not what tea time in our house is usually like. Each meal has been specially designed by Hello Fresh’s Head Chef, Patrick Drake, to tackle the unenviable task which parents face of having to create nutritious dinners for fussy little eaters. For £64 per week, families of four can enjoy four night’s worth of delicious, healthy home cooked meals - equating to just £4 per head per meal. This includes free UK wide delivery over a choice of delivery days.
Hello Fresh are offering Families Edinburgh readers £20 off their first box. Just go to www.hellofresh.co.uk/edinburgh20
Tips to a simple and stress free Christmas • De-clutter - Get the kids to help clean their rooms. Give them a box/bag labelled ‘charity’ and one with ‘bin’ for any broken toys/rubbish. Remind them they are making space for new toys and you’ll get a result! (It goes without saying you’ll need to check the bags!) • Plan - with all the Christmas parties and extra activities, make sure your family calendar is kept up to date to avoid clashes. Don’t feel obligated to fit everything in because it can be a recipe for melt down! Do make sure you keep some regular ‘chill out’ time for everyone to recharge their batteries. • Sleep - towards the end of the year and over winter we can all get a bit run down. ‘Cranky kids’ on Christmas Day can make a special day less special, so as tempting as it is to let children stay up late and enjoy pre-festive activities, maintaining the regular night time routine has its benefits. For more tips and advice on de-cluttering before Christmas take a look at my ‘30 bags in 30 days’ challenge with some simple and practical tips to removing clutter. ‘Simple Living’ provides bespoke practical support and advice in all areas of your home from de-cluttering to home improvement projects. Lisa Pettersson For the second year running, Edinburgh based artist Lisa Pettersson is taking commissions for children’s portraits. They make a great and unique Christmas gift and commissioning is easy! ‘The customer emails me one or more photographs they like of their child/children, and I use them to work from, painting in acrylic black and white ‘pop-art style’ on paper. Many of those who have commissioned in the past have been grandmothers. The customer chooses a colour for the paper that I paint on. When I’m done I email a photo of the piece to the customer and presuming they are happy I get the painting professionally mounted and send it. The customer only pays when they have received the painting.’ Take a look at Lisa’s website if you want to see some samples of her work: www.lisapettersson.com, or email her straight away with your pictures or questions lisa@lisapettersson.com Prices start from £90 for a 30x40cm painting, including a white mount, but she has done these in big poster sizes too. There is nothing like having original art on your walls, and one of your children is a memory to treasure forever.

Caught in enemy crossfire, Joey ends up serving on both sides during the war before landing in no man’s land, while Albert, not old enough to enlist, embarks on a treacherous mission to find his horse and bring him home. For those who have always wanted to visit an art gallery but have maybe felt a little intimidated, it is a fantastic opportunity to shed those fears and let yourself be immersed in the atmosphere and guided by those gallery curators who are on hand to discuss and explain their work in a relaxed and friendly way. We have original art starting from as little as £50, rising to tens of thousands of pounds and, with a huge selection of paintings, sculpture, glass, ceramics and original prints on offer, there will definitely be art for sale to suit everyone. As we believe that they are the artists, curators and collectors of the future, we welcome children to the fair and have a whole host of things lined up to keep them entertained while their parents explore the art on show. Alongside a creche, there will be printmaking workshops, artist talks, demonstrations and painting classes meaning, they are sure to leave the fair happy, more knowledgeable and, quite possibly, more paint covered than when they first arrive! Other than all the art for sale and activities to take part in, there will be a fully licensed bar and restaurant serving breakfast rolls, soups, sandwiches, tray bakes and High Tea’s, while there will also be a champagne and wine bar in the main exhibiting hall for visitors to enjoy. The Edinburgh Art Fair, we hope, is an event that will be an experience embraced by the whole family and one which, with all that it has to offer, will leave you richer in mind, if not in pocket. We are so lucky to live in Edinburgh! Never a dull moment and now we’re being spoilt with all these amazing Christmas shows. You can choose to yell “He’s behind you” and “Booooo!” at the top of your lungs or sit spell bound in a winter wonderland - or both. Maybe even at the same time! A Christmas Carol 28 November - 4 January 14 By Charles Dickens. Adapted for stage by Neil Duffield This much loved story perfectly captures the magic of Christmas and positively sparkles on stage with an ensemble cast playing the many memorable characters Bob Cratchit, Jacob Marley, Mrs Fezziwig, Tiny Tim and, of course, the old humbug himself, Ebenezer Scrooge Esquire! Scrooge is shown the cruel mistakes and misconceptions he has made during his life when the three ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future visit him one cold and wintry night in December. He comes to his senses and realises that there is more to life than being mean and miserable – and that a kind heart and generous spirit make the world a happier place for everyone. With Christmas carols, a wonderfully evocative set and the odd flurry of snow, this show will bring the joy of Christmas straight to the heart of Edinburgh. Recommended for ages 6 – 106!
