Cycling In Scotland Has More Than Doubled In Lockdown

The latest figures by Cycling Scotland show that there has been a sharp rise in the number of people making journeys by bike since the COVID-19 outbreak. In one week during lockdown, cycling journeys were up by 120%, and Dunfermline showed the highest increase at 215% in March, according to a Cycling Scotland report (source: cycling.scot).

Shealagh Crabb, Bikeability Scotland Coordinator, said: “It’s great to see more people are enjoying cycling. Our priority now is to keep this momentum going

across the region and ensure more people across Fife discover the lasting benefits of riding their bikes.”

That’s why Fife Council supports the Bikeability programme, which encourages children to cycle, and the Council’s culture, ethos, and environmental goals.

Bikeability Scotland, the modernday form of cycling proficiency, is a national scheme, comprising of three main levels, starting at P5 up to S2. It aims to give children the skills and confidence they need, both to cycle safely on the roads, and to encourage them to carry on cycling into adulthood.

The training has proven to be successful, with 65% of pupils reporting more confidence in cycling and 45% cycling more frequently after Bikeability Scotland training.*

All Fife schools are given the opportunity to participate with the Bikeability Scotland, and full support is available to any that take part. Fife Council is always looking for volunteers to help support their child and school with cycling.
