Help to Overcome Dyslexia
Teacher and former Headteacher, Fiona Macdiarmid – known to many parents as Centre Director of Stirling’s Kip McGrath Education Centre – is passionate about helping people achieve their potential. In addition to providing tuition, she also delivers the unique Cellfied Dyslexia Programme, which helps people overcome dyslexia and similar processing difficulties. Protect your children’s vision from harmful UV rays With summer on the way, you will be looking forward to spending more time outdoors with your children. Spending time outside is fantastic for your health but did you know up to 80% of UV light absorption in the eye occurs by the age of 18 (World Health Organisation). Worryingly kids often don’t have eye protection on to block the harmful effects of UV. This can contribute to eye problems in later life e.g. macular degeneration and cataract. Independent optician Ochil Eyes are keen to help you protect your children’s eyes and carry a large range of prescription and non-prescription sunglasses for kids. Off the Page Book Festival 4-15th May Highlights this year include Elly Griffiths, James Robertson, Alan Parks, Meg Henderson, Malachy Tallack, Alex Nye, Ross Sayers, Jim Crumley and poet Em Strang. Makar Clive Wright hosts an Off the Page Showcase introducing other local writers with music from Bill Adair. There is an inspiring programme at the Smith Museum which includes talks from Dr Murray Cook and Louis Stott. For fans of history there is a tour of the Engine Shed and Bannockburn House. Our children’s programme will also offer a variety of events including Steve Cole, Alan Windram, Jonathan Meres and Alan Dapre. There will also be a chance to come and try digital kit like robots and 3D printers. We will also be celebrating Bookbug Week with lots of fun sessions. Fostering in Falkirk
Foster Care fortnight in May starts a fresh campaign to recruit new foster carers in Falkirk. Around a fifth of Falkirk young people have to live with private agency carers out with the Falkirk area. With your help we can ensure there are sufficient foster carers to keep local children closer to home and help them maintain links with their families, local communities and friends. There are children of all ages who need fostered. Falkirk particularly needs carers who will foster teenagers, sibling groups and children who need permanent foster placements. A stable family environment provides a child with a strong foundation which can give them the chance to aspire to great things. Foster carers come from all walks of life and applications are welcome from everyone who thinks they have the space in their life to offer a home to a child. Mums on the Run - All round fitness class for busy mums As a mummy myself I know how hard it is to get time for you to get active post baby. Mums on the run is designed to support you getting back into shape with no need for a sitter while you work out. The sessions are either 35mins indoor toning only so kiddies of any age are welcome to run about, sleep or join in and also suitable if you are pregnant and keeping active throughout your pregnancy. The Stirling Kip McGrath Centre will be running their popular summer tutoring sessions again this summer. Located on the Stirling University Campus, Kip McGrath has been a trusted source of support for many Stirling families for 15 years. Centre Director, Fiona Macdiarmid is a teacher and former Headteacher with over 30 years’ experience in education. The tutoring provided by her and her team is individualised for every student and all tutors are fully qualified teachers. Summer tutoring will run for 4 weeks during the summer holidays. Stirling Cycle Training are running on road cycling beginners courses, during the holidays for children aged 7 & 8 and 9 – 13. The courses are suitable for children who have done no previous cycle proficiency training or those who feel they need more practise to cycle safely on the road. The training starts in a traffic free area before moving on to quiet roads. Classes available Tuesday 3rd to Friday 6th July and Monday 6th to Thursday 9th August. The classes for children aged 9 – 13 are over 4 mornings, 10am – 12 noon, cost £45 per child. The classes for children aged 7 & 8 are shorter, 2.00pm – 3.30pm, cost £40 per child. This will be similar to 9-13 year olds class but we expect to spend more time on bike control exercises and we will not progress onto mini roundabouts. Summer Fun at Macrobert Arts Centre
Macrobert has a fantastic programme for children, young people and families of all ages this Summer. Children aged 4-15 can enjoy an Epic Art Challenge, which will focus on Super Powers in honour of the sportspeople taking part in the European Championships in Glasgow this summer. If you had a Super Power what would it be? Simply draw or paint a picture that illustrates you using your Super Power! Then for young people (S1+), take part in a Theatre Intensive, which will introduce you to a wide range of skills, from drama and vocal skills to stage management and set design. Learn how to devise, create and present a performance. You must be able to commit to the full week. Why you like living where you do I love staying at the top of the town in Stirling because it is soaked in history. It’s also very convenient for Fearne’s school Allan’s Primary, the town and for visiting family who live nearby. Favourite shop I love Sage in Broad Street. It is my favourite shop as I am a fan of vintage style jewellery. They sell a unique range of things and I can always get a great present there. Favourite park The King’s Park in Stirling is my favourite park. There are superb views of the castle and it also has lots of fun playground apparatus for the kids. The kiosk is great selling coffee, tea and ice cream in the Summer months. Favourite children’s club or class Fearne goes to Chalky’s Gymnastics Club in Stirling. It is great for building confidence and fitness. She is also really enjoying Braehead Guides which she has recently started. Must mention the Engine

We are regular visitors and every year it just gets better. If you are going make sure you book a barbeque slot when you buy your tickets. You take along everything you need, food, cooking equipment etc and use their grill, it makes a fantastic day out. Also we had a recent visit to Edinburgh Zoo and I was so impressed, would encourage a visit there too. Favourite child friendly restaurant We love the Chinese and Japanese food at Bite East on Port Street in Stirling, Fearne is a huge fan of their Sushi. The staff are excellent, very friendly and always provide a good service. How to Get Your Child Talking About Their Day

We all want to hear about our child’s day - what they did in the playground, who they sat with at lunch, whether they understood what was going on, and, most importantly, whether they had a “good” day. So we frequently ask, “How was your day?” In response, we often get grunts and shrugged shoulders. As an alternative we try asking, “What did you do at school today?” This time you get the customary one-word answer: “Nothing.” Rather than push harder for answers to your standard end-of-the-day questions, why not try some new conversation primers? Here are some tips for getting your child to open up when they come home. Ask Open-Ended Questions “How was school today?” is too vague and children need more specific questions to help them recall their day. Avoid questions that can be answered in one word, especially with a “yes” or “no.” Instead, try some open-ended questions like, “Tell me about what you played at break today?” or “I wonder what you had for lunch today?” Use their Artwork to Start Conversations A child’s art work can refer both to school activities or things of specific interest to your child. Take advantage of these masterpieces by asking open ended questions of your little artist and don’t forget to listen to the answers. Showing interest in their work can increase your child’s self-esteem, as well as provide vital emotional and mental links between school and home. Know their Timetable This way you can start talking about
library day, sports or art class. “What kind of books did the librarian show you today?” or “Tell me about the books that you chose?” Take the time to sit down and read the books with your child affirming their choice and encouraging them in their reading habits. Discuss what your child feels went right in the football match – or what went wrong! Model “Sharing” about your Day “I had a great day today. I talked to nanna about…” or “I met a new friend and we had coffee.” It is important to share your interests, friends, challenges and joys with your kids so they see that communication modelled for them. Give Children Time to Unwind Whilst it may seem your child is brushing you off, they are likely to be tired and attempting to disengage from school business. Give them a snack for an energy boost and a run in the park before you get home. They’ve been hemmed in all day by walls and instructions and need to cut loose for a bit. They’ll be more inclined to give you a glimpse of their day once they’ve been fed and exercised! Play Talking Games Playing the ‘sad and glad’ game will encourage your child to talk without feeling they are being bombarded by questions. At the dinner table everyone takes turns answering “I was glad today because…..” and “I was sad today because…..” You can extend it to “mad” too – what made you cross. This is a good way to open up discussions. Give your Child Special One-toOne Time This doesn’t mean special treats or hot chocolates but doing something together every day, just the two of you. It could be as simple as preparing a meal. These are times when easy conversations occur.
Use ‘reflective listening’ This is a way of re-framing questions into statements that invite a response and de-personalise conversations. Instead of asking “Are you worried about your test?” you could say something like “Lots of kids your age get worried about tests.” This makes it easier for your child to reply. Be Ready and Available to Listen When your child wants to speak, stop and listen to them. Turn off the TV or put away the phone, look up and show that you are listening fully and you value what they have to say. Try Communicating without Words The best way to connect with your child may not necessarily be through talking. Talk is not how all kids express themselves: play is. Many children prefer to reconnect with a hug, by playing a game or even rough housing. Some are more physical than verbal, so you might ask them to give you thumbs up or thumbs down about their day instead of discussing it. Avoid Face-to-Face Interrogations You might do better in situations where you’re not face-to-face like in the car, when your child takes a bath, or when you are cooking. In this way, your child won’t feel put on the spot. Listen Before you Talk Let your child lead you into conversations on their own. Sometimes your child will drop hints without your asking, like “We planted seeds today!” or “Where’s the atlas? I need to find Antarctica.” These are perfect openings to talk together about their day.
