Families and community groups are urged to get involved with this year’s Road Safety Week (21-27 November), the UK’s biggest road safety event. Road safety charity Brake, which co-ordinates the event, is encouraging parents and community leaders to go to www.roadsafetyweek.org.uk/ communities to get ideas on promoting safer road use and campaigning for safer local roads, to register for a free-action pack and for the week itself. For this year’s Road Safety Week, Brake have chosen to focus on the six elements of the Brake Pledge: Slow, Sober, Secure, Silent, Sharp and Sustainable. They are encouraging drivers, families and whole communities to make and share Brake’s Pledge, showing their commitment to saving lives and keeping our roads safe by keeping to six simple rules.

Community groups, schools and organisations can run activities, from fundraisers, campaigns and competitions, to running road safety workshops in partnership with local authorities, emergency services or other agencies to explore the Brake Pledge.
RSPB Tasting Menu For Birds
As the colder months approach, it’s the perfect time to start putting out more food to help some of the UK’s declining bird species survive the winter, and the RSPB (www.rspb.com/homes) has created the perfect menu for our feathered friends. RSPB wildlife advisor and head bird food chef Ben Andrew said: “This winter’s menu has been prepared to offer a selection of tasty treats for even the picky eaters. Different types of birds need different kinds of food. Blackbirds, starlings and robins will eat fat, fruit, and mealworms, while chaffinches, goldfinches and collared doves are seed eaters, preferring sunflower hearts, nuts and nyjer seed.” Ben continued, “We suggest bird food like seed mixes, sunflower hearts, and fat balls, along with leftovers from the kitchen like cooked rice, uncooked porridge oats, chopped bacon, cheese, pastry, dried and fresh fruit. “You should avoid dried coconut (it can swell up inside birds), cooked porridge (it is glutinous and can harden around bird’s beaks), margarines and vegetable oils (they smear on feathers and stop waterproofing and insulation) and milk (birds can’t digest it). “Water is also vital for both drinking and bathing and bird baths can be kept from freezing over using small floating items like twigs or ping pong balls. Seasonal family fun from Luton Culture Christmas is just round the corner – well, maybe around 2 corners – and this year Luton Culture is offering a multitude of family fun. Leighton Buzzard’s Christmas Festival comes to town! Hart Hill invited to be Museum Makers

opens new Bedford shop Photo shows children and staff from Hart Hill Nursery School who were enjoying contributing to the Wardown Park Museum in Luton refurbishment. Staff members have been working alongside the museum to develop ideas and ways to engage young children to get them interested in history. The children have also been involved and have painted butterflies and dinosaurs, some of which were chosen to be displayed on the hoarding around the museum. Tricia Penfold, Headteacher at Hart Hill Nursery, said: “It was an amazing opportunity for the children to be involved in the refurbishment and to make their mark as part of their local community. The work the children have been doing to support the museum has really helped to further develop creativity in the school. We are eagerly awaiting the grand opening so we can continue our partnership as museum makers for the town.”

Last month, Sue Ryder (www.sueryder.org) opened a new charity shop on Harpur Street in Bedford. All proceeds from the new shop will help Sue Ryder deliver its incredible care in its seven hospices and five neurological centres across the UK, like Sue Ryder, St John’s Hospice in nearby Moggerhanger (pictured), which cares for people dying from conditions such as cancer, heart failure and lung disease. Lesley Alabaster, Sue Ryder, new Bedford Shop Manager said: “To help us make this shop a real success we are looking for volunteers who are willing to spare some time to help with everything from sorting and preparing stock to merchandising and sales. Volunteering with Sue Ryder is a great way to gain new skills, meet new people and get involved with the local community.” Anyone who is interested in joining the volunteer team should contact the Harpur Street shop on 01234 364442.

How to keep energy levels up for learning during the winter By Liat Hughes Joshi
Even lively kids can lose their get up and go as winter draws in. Here’s how to maximise your family’s energy levels… Consider a ‘wake up gently’ alarm clock Swap the shock of sudden, loud alarms and bright lights switching on for an alarm clock that mimics sunrise by gradually increasing lighting levels. These make waking up less of a thing to dread on dark mornings. Maximise sleep The NHS recommends 11 hours sleep for a five-year-old, reducing steadily to around 9.5 hours by the age of 11. Work back from when they need to get up to determine optimal bedtimes. Make hearty but healthy breakfasts Swap sugar-loaded cereals for something warming and energy-boosting, such as fruity porridge or scrambled eggs. Put some lively music on! If it’s gloomy outside and everyone’s half asleep…liven things up with mood-enhancing tunes. The right music is a brilliant pick-me-up!
Check you’re healthy for those you love with a free health ‘MOT’ When caring for children, it’s natural to put their needs above your own but this winter, parents and carers are being urged to make some time to prioritise their own health. People aged 40 to 74 are being encouraged to have a free ‘health MOT’, which could help them to stay healthy for those they love, like their children and grandchildren. Free NHS Health Checks are available to over 40s who aren’t currently diagnosed with a long-term condition like diabetes or high blood pressure. This 20 minute check assesses your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and dementia – conditions that can often be prevented. Your risk of developing these health conditions is calculated by taking measurements such as your height, weight and cholesterol level and asking questions about your lifestyle and family medical history. Taking this information also means that you can be offered personalised advice on how to reduce your risk. Cllr Maurice Jones, Executive Member for Health at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “Many of us make the effort to make sure that our cars are winter-ready, but our busy lives often mean that our own health is at the bottom of our list of priorities. “An NHS Health Check is like an MOT for your body - it makes sure that some of your body’s most important systems are all running smoothly

Walk to (and from) school If time and distance allows, leaving the car behind and walking will help ensure children are fully awake for their first lessons of the day. Watch out for ‘end-of-term-itis’ exhaustion Many children get a build up of tiredness, which can lead to a condition lightheartedly called ‘end-of-term-itis’, involving tears and tantrums aplenty by December. Fend it off with quieter afternoons and weekends along with sensible bed times. Get outside at the weekends whatever the weather Whilst you may all benefit from downtime after a busy week, even an hour of fresh air and activity will do everyone good. Remember there’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing – invest in decent waterproofs and wellies for everyone! For every 1,000 cards dropped in to M&S stores for recycling throughout January 2017, a new tree will be planted by the Woodland Trust in the UK. Card collection bins will be in M&S stores from 2 January to 31 January 2017. In just under two decades more than half a billion cards have been collected and 245,500 trees planted – if you lined them up they would run further than Land’s End to John O Groats!

NURSERY NEWS Colmworth Nursery receives a “Good” OFSTED rating Toad Hall Nursery in Colmworth which became part of the Toad Hall Nursery Group last year, has received its first OFSTED rating, and has been rated as “good”. A number of key company initiatives have been introduced by Toad Hall at the nursery including Cook and Grow, Magical Maths, Early Language Program and Lets Get Physical and weekly Spanish Lessons, which complement the Early Years Foundation Stage. Emma Parker Nursery Manager, Toad Hall Colmworth commented “I am delighted that our nursery’s efforts have been recognised by OFSTED, all my team work exceptionally hard and their commitment to nurturing the children really shines through.” Extra hours could force nursery schools to close Experts are warning that if the government presses ahead with the offer to parents of 30 hours’ free childcare each week, then some nursery schools may be forced to close. The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) says that pre-schools won’t cope when free care for three and four year olds rises from 15 to 30 hours per week during term times.
Additional funding that was available for nursery schools to pay for this will end in two years. Russell Hobby, general secretary of the NAHT said: "The 30 hours offer will be doomed before it even gets started, additional places won't materialise and current places will be lost as nursery schools across England close their doors for good. "The government has the data - it must rethink before thousands of families, many in the poorest areas of the country, are left high and dry.”
Tutoring: What you need to know By Liat Hughes Joshi Whether it’s to prepare for exams or improve a struggling child’s confidence, a tutor can provide a significant boost to learning. Yet finding a decent one can be a test in itself. Here’s how to find the best one for your child… Plan ahead where possible The best tutors may well have waiting lists, so if you know your child will need support for exams or perhaps before moving to secondary school, begin your search well in advance. In very competitive 11+ areas for example, you may have to register interest with the most in-demand tutors 18 months ahead. Ask around Word-of-mouth is often the most effective way to find a good tutor. Ask parents you know and trust for recommendations. For the 11+ or public exams, speak to those with kids a year or two older, who’ve been there and done that recently. Consider agencies If your requests for recommendations draw a blank, a well-established tutoring agency could be the answer. Reputable agencies will vet tutors’ credentials and should match you and your child to someone with a similar style. Another upside of an agency is that if your usual tutor is ill or away for a long period, they should be able to send someone else. Group tutoring reduces costs but probably won’t be as tailored There are increasing numbers of tuition centres offering group classes, both independent companies and chains. These can work out cheaper per hour but your child won’t get the same one-on-one attention, and it’s vital to check that those in the group need to work on the same things at roughly the same level.

Anyone can become a tutor so do your homework Anybody can set up as and call themselves a tutor, even if they’ve never taught anyone anything - there’s no regulation, which means checking credentials and qualifications is vital. One-on-one tutors should be Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checked (formerly known as CRB checking) – if they aren’t, then be wary. Don’t be shy about checking how they work Ask questions even if you’ve had a recommendation from other parents - what suits their child may not suit yours. Are they a teacher/ former teacher and if so where did they work? How long have they been tutoring for and what is their track record like? Find out the local going rate Expect to pay anything between £20 and £65 an hour, depending on where you live and how in demand a particular tutor is. However, more expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better. Arrange a trial lesson Many tutors will offer your child a trial lesson - this lets you get a feel for whether the tutor and your child gel and whether their teaching style is going to work for you both. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge recently visited Stewards Academy, a school supported by the charity Place2Be, which the Duchess supports. It is one of a group of charities that have joined to form the Heads Together campaign (www.headstogether.org.uk/backtoschool), led by the Duke and Duchess and Prince Harry. It aims to support children with mental health problems and to offer support at times when their lives change dramatically, such as when moving or during times of family upsets. The couple observed a lesson led by the students and also an assembly for Years 7 and 11 on how to cope with life’s big changes. The Duke of Cambridge said: “Catherine and I are really impressed by what we have seen of Stewards Academy, as we're both strong believers in schools where the emotional well being of young people is nurtured and protected just as much as your learning and academic skills. “The Heads Together campaign is all about getting people talking about the difficult times that many of us will face and have faced in our lives. “We know that parents sometimes don't know how to help their children open up and talk about difficult times. Heads Together has today published, on its website, some top tips for parents – to help them talk to their children about big changes you may be going through.”

In October, the first sod was cut to mark the start of work that will create two new schools at a site in Green Lane, Wixams, south of Bedford. Principal, Paul Spyropoulos was joined by the Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson (pictured with pupils from Lakeview Primary School), Chief Executive of Bedford Borough Council, Philip Simpkins, Cllr Graham Coombes and representatives of the organisations involved to launch the building project. This major project will provide a new primary and secondary school forming a central focus of the four new villages forming The Wixams which will provide a new learning community which will welcome children at the age of two to the nursery and educate them all the way through to the age of 18. Both schools are due to open in September 2017 and offer places to over 1,200 pupils from the area.

How to make Edible Christmas Gifts Christmas gifts don’t have to be expensive and you can have lots of fun making foodie gifts for your friends and family. Here are a few quick, easy and delicious ideas for you to make with your children.
Christmas cookies in a jar
To decorate:
This is a lovely gift as the jar can be used again and it’s full of yummy, Christmassy biscuits too.
• Icing sugar
You will need: • 250g soft butter or margarine • 140g caster sugar • 1 egg
• Water • Lemon juice
Method: Cream together the butter and sugar, then add the yolk from the egg and the vanilla extract. Gradually add the flour and keep mixing until it forms a ball of dough. Kids can do this with their hands. Next, roll the dough out of a floured surface and use a variety of Christmas cookie cutters to make the shapes – stars, diamonds and hearts are all good. Bake for 12-15 minutes (gas 4, 190 C 375 F).
• 2 tsp vanilla extract • 300g plain flour • Quarter tsp ground cinnamon
• Large Kilner jar
Once cool, mix the icing sugar with a teaspoon of lemon juice and a little water, until it is easy to pour but still thick. Use a piping bag to make decorations on each and leave to dry in a cool place.
• Ribbon and decorations such as mini bells
Finally, place a selection of the cookies into a Kilner jar and decorate with a Christmas ribbon, bells and a label.
• Tiny pinch of ground star anise • Quarter tsp nutmeg
Cheese Palmiers These quick and easy cheesy biscuits taste delicious and are great as a gift if you pop them in a little box.
You will need: • Packet of ready made puff pastry • 100g cheese of your choice – gruyere or cheddar or great, or experiment with the different colours of white Cheshire, Red Leicester and yellow Cheddar. Place the pastry flat on a floured baking tray. Grate the cheese on the large side of the grate so it’s not too fine, then help your child scatter it evenly across the pastry.
Next, get your child to roll the pastry up from each end, so that the rolls meet in the middle. Press it all down lightly. With a knife that’s not too sharp, your child can cut slices through the pastry, about 0.5 cm wide. You’ll get quite a few out of the pastry. Place each on its side on a baking tray, leaving plenty of room as they will expand as they cook. Place in a hot oven- (200 C, 400 F Gas 6) for 10-12 minutes until golden. Leave to cool. To turn these into a lovely gift, take a box from an old packet of biscuits or crackers, cut off the top and cover the box with Christmas paper. Place the Palmiers inside laid one on top of each other at an angle. Finally, cover the top with clear plastic or cling film, then add a pretty ribbon or bow on top.
Snowballs
Method:
Everyone loves chocolate and these little snowball shaped truffles are great as a Christmas themed treat.
Put the chocolate pieces in a pudding basin and set it over a pan of hot water, with the double cream. Bring to a simmer and then turn the heat down low. You’ll need to supervise your child at this stage, as steam can burn. Stir with a wooden spoon until the chocolate has melted into the cream. Add the vanilla, take off the heat and chill for one hour. It should then be firm but still loose enough to work with.
• 2 tbsp double cream • 200g good white chocolate, chopped • Half tsp vanilla extract • 2 tbsp desiccated coconut • Mini cake cases
With a teaspoon, each take a small amount of the chocolate paste and roll it in a ball between your palms. Then roll it in the coconut and you have little snowball shaped truffles. Place each completed one inside a mini cake case. Pop some inside a jam jar to give as a gift and add little playful touches such as tiny robins and Christmas trees that you use as cake decorations.
