Welcome to our Schools and education issue What is the best way to pick a school? Many people do a complex cross analysis of school numbers, performance stats, funding figures, word of mouth, city planning projections and witchcraft. I pick schools the way I date: what is closest to me right now? Great! You’ll do. Fortunately, the more children I have the more overwhelming shifting houses becomes so we are ironically approaching stability; we’ve been at the same school for nearly 4 years! While my children are making great strides, I still can’t seem to remember what day assembly is on or which day we wear the sports shirts.

I just layer them like babushkas, so they can rip off the polo to reveal the formal uniform or the sports uniform depending on the day. I’m quite proud of this ‘life hack’.

For us, it’s a way of life. We’ve got the bug and now we can’t stop! It also helps that Mr Jetsetting Kids travels quite a bit for work.

How do you afford to travel?

Points, points and more points. We pay for everything on credit card. We pool our points through to Westpac’s Altitude Rewards program and then redeem them with our preferred airlines. We also live by the saying ‘experiences over things’ – so we try to spend only on the things we really need.

EXCURSIONS: A LESSON IN INSPIRATION

We talk to Brisbane Girls Grammar who explain how school excursions are evolving and why they are still an important part of learning in the modern curriculum.

Educators have long known the value of experiences gained outside the classroom. Excursions, class visits, camps and retreats provide students not only with breaks in routine, which stimulate lateral and innovative thinking, but often expose them to environments, experiences and social settings that promote increased exploration and motivation for learning.

The excursion is therefore a chance to seek the unexpected—to gain new knowledge, but more importantly, to immerse oneself in the wonder of the new.

Unique learning experiences are particularly important in today’s educational landscape. The demands of the curriculum and national benchmark testing mean that it can sometimes be difficult to integrate excursions into already full timetables. However, it is imperative that schools facilitate novel experiences for their students.

From working alongside scientists, astronomers and astronauts, to collaborating with designers, playwrights and musicians to deliver compelling and original work, students have many chances to learn outside the classroom, and to develop attributes essential to thriving in workplaces of the future.

WHAT IS AN ‘EXCURSION’?

To keep pace with the demands of education in Australia, the nature of excursions have changed. Today’s teachers seek to provide students with access to real-world industries or workplaces, insights into research or higher education, training and short courses in skills that will be relevant to students’ careers, or outdoor experiences and leadership initiatives.

Schools increasingly collaborate with government bodies, tertiary institutions and industry to introduce practical experiences—often, through visits and programs held on the school’s grounds.

MUSIC: A PARTNERSHIP THAT BENEFITS ALL INVOLVED In 2018, Girls Grammar announced a unique Education Partnership with Queensland Symphony Orchestra, to provide students the opportunity to be mentored by, and perform with, some of Australia’s finest musicians.

The Partnership’s Prossima Program allowed students who demonstrated strong musical talent to participate in a series of mentoring sessions with a Queensland Symphony Orchestra musician in their chosen instrument.

Education Students visited the Orchestra’s rehearsal studios and attended sessions at the School, before performing with the Orchestra under the direction of Conductor and Music Director, Ms Alondra de la Parra, at Queensland Performing Arts Centre in early August.

The benefit of working with Orchestra musicians, entering their performance spaces, and gaining an insight into their daily lives, cannot be underestimated.

Students learned advanced technical and performance skills, but also gained the opportunity to be inspired by a professional musician.

SPACE: EXPERIENCES BEYOND OUR GALAXY Astronomy is a field of study that inspires true wonder and awe. With the recent launch of the Dorothy Hill Observatory at Girls Grammar’s Marrapatta Memorial Outdoor Education Centre, students have access to extended learning opportunities across the curriculum.

Telescopic observation is integrated into the Science curriculum beginning in Year 7. Watching from their laptops at home, students are led by their Science teacher through a live-cast ‘tour of the sky’ as an introduction to the field of astronomy. In class, students learn how to send instructions to the robotic telescopes and how to use image-processing software to manipulate the data that is sent back to them.

Partnerships with the Astronomical Association of Queensland, University of Southern Queensland and Edith Cowan University have commenced, which may lead to practical experience opportunities and the capacity for students to collect primary data for use in professional research.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION: THE QUINTESSENTIAL NOVEL ENVIRONMENT The School’s Marrapatta Memorial Outdoor Education Centre, in the Mary Valley near Gympie, is a dedicated campus where students are challenged beyond their comfort zone.

With Outdoor Education programs in Years 7 to 9, students are given multiple opportunities to build their abilities and confidence in the outdoors, while learning skills of cooperation, resilience and persistence. The unique campus is the perfect space for students to learn about self, others and the environment, as well as how to adapt to rapid changes not normally encountered in a regular school day.

Excursions and non-traditional learning experiences exemplify Girls Grammar’s commitment to providing students a broad, liberal education.

A wide range of novel and challenging learning experiences give students a breadth and depth of knowledge that allows them to discern their unique strengths, and prepares them to engage intelligently and compassionately with their world.

Is it just about changing assessment?

The most important thing to realise is that while much of the focus is on changed assessment methods the most important and fundamental element of the new system is in fact the changing syllabus and nature of learning in schools. Each of the Senior syllabi have been re-written to focus on what are termed 21st century skills. These are a researched set of skills and abilities that have been identified essential for our young people if they are to operate, succeed and lead tomorrow’s society.

While the assessment change is necessary, and getting all the publicity, it is the changed learning and teaching approaches that are actually going to bring most benefit to our schools and students. However, it is true that parents will be impacted by the changes and will in fact need to have a strong understanding of the system of assessment to assist their child in their choices.

The internal-external balance is also a point of difference to other states.

In the new Queensland Senior system subject assessment will be 75% internal and 25% external, except for Maths and Science subjects. These will be 50% internal and 50% external. All subjects will have a maximum of four assessment items across Year 12, which is another wonderful change as many subjects have six or more assessments each year which adds significant stress to students and families. In addition to the external endorsement of all assessment items there is also a common marking template for each assessment item, across all subjects. They will not vary from school to school and each teacher’s marking will be checked and approved for consistency.

How is it an improvement?

What is it?

The ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) pathway itself will be a new thing for parents and while there are similarities to those external examination systems in other states it is most definitely uniquely Queensland in its approach. Internal school based assessment is still of significant value, but far more keenly moderated than in the current system. As example, all assessment tasks are required to be submitted and endorsed prior to student completion. Currently assessments are moderated across schools post completion, so if inequities exist they cannot be addressed for the cohort who sat them, only the cohort in the following year.

The biggest area of improvement is the removal of the global cohort moderating examinations that are used to provide school to school, and as such, student to student comparison. Currently known as the QCS test this examination is no longer effective in doing its job. While the examination itself is still of the highest integrity the manipulation of school cohorts has seen normalised results skewed. In simple terms, in 2003 71% of students enrolled in Year 12 sat the QCS test as this course of study was the only way to matriculate into university. In 2017 only 49.6% of Year 12 students sat the examination. Effectively, over the past 25 years, schools have explored other ways of university matriculation for their lower achieving students and subsequently excluded them from the QCS cohort. Having a system where a student’s own dedicated and committed performance is the fundamental determinant to their progression to higher study is certainly overdue.

Education To this end it is so important for all parents to remember that the ATAR is the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank. It is not an intelligence measure, nor a success measure. Sadly, over time, the OP has seen its purpose utilised as an inaccurate and irresponsible measure of school success and as such children have become ‘market commodities’. There have been far too many children, and schools, left feeling inadequate and empty because of a disappointing OP score. There are many different ways in which your child can reach their dream and many of those are non-university pathways. These can be far more beneficial, particularly to experiential learners, than university choices immediately out of school.

The ATAR pathway is only one pathway, and not the pathway for everyone. As your child develops, it is their skills and abilities that are far more likely to lead to their eventual success. In their school life look to encourage, and make choices for them that encourage challenge; experiences that incorporate opportunities to fail, reflect and bounce back; activities that encourage curiosity, problem solving and challenges their conventional thinking. In these activities as parents we can articulate and reiterate the importance of striving for accuracy and being persistent in life when things are difficult; focusing on tasks and activities and sticking to them until the end.

What does it mean for Parents?

The first thing to understand is that for the most part the change, while it means a great deal to educators, should mean very little for parents. Particularly those who have children in the early and middle years. School success will be determined by your child’s strength and understanding in the areas of literacy and numeracy, combined with their emotional intelligence. Spending time reading and encouraging letter and word recognition, number concepts and encouraging social interaction and problem solving are always the fundamental building blocks to a child flourishing at school. ATAR will not change this. There are impacts though as children grow through the years and begin to develop hopes and dreams about what their post school life may become.

In conclusion the new Senior schooling and method of assessment is designed to better suit the 21st century learner. It is designed to focus on how they think, how they communicate, how they interact with one another and how they operate and manipulate the environment in which they live. It will challenge them to be creative, flexible, focused, determined and articulate. They will be required to know content but moreover apply that content knowledge in real world situations, solving problems. Our new system of education will most definitely create a wonderful place for our children to grow up and for us to grow old.

Year 9 student, Rebecca, is a student at Brigidine College and is helping to drive the movement for more creative and innovative learning opportunities.

“We are very lucky to have the support and vision of our Librarians guiding us and to have the facilities that we do in the Tullow Centre. As a group, the Makerspace girls are excited and happy to learn, and I think that being creative allows us to do that. To have a space away from study and assignments where we can just come together and be creative problem solvers is wonderful. I’m excited to see what’s to come for the program in the future,” Rebecca said.

School of thought Hillbrook’s Philosophical Inquiry (PI) program is embedded into the curriculum and sees students spend time each week considering the big issues fundamental to the way we live. Creativity the cornerstone of education People often mistake creativity for simply the ability to draw, paint, sculpt, dance or write.

However, creativity can mean the ability to apply something you know to another field – what we would call at St Margaret’s deep learning and is a concept that sits at the core of the school’s teaching and learning framework.

So, what does creativity look like at St Margaret’s. It starts from the very beginning in Pre-Prep where students are engaged and extended through life skills such as problem solving, exploring, creating and hypothesising – with each child viewed as a rich and competent constructor of knowledge.

How to Conduct a School Uniform Review… …that meets Department of Education Policy Changes!

Across Australia, many primary and secondary, state and private schools are reviewing and ‘modernising’ their uniforms. This is due to changing community expectations about what children should wear to school.

If your school is looking to update its uniform, here’s what you need to know: Queensland’s Student Dress Code Policy Get a copy of the Queensland Department of Education School Dress Code policy. Whilst only state schools are bound to comply, all schools should consider aligning with this document. It is designed to respect the rights of students and schools. The Student Dress Code was updated on the 13th July 2018 and states that school uniform dress codes must: • be developed in consultation with the school community • be consistent with health and safety considerations • comply with anti-discrimination legislation • consider affordability, functionality and durability of uniform items • provide uniform options, including shorts and pants, in all uniform categories for all students, regardless of gender.

Following this code ensures schools uphold anti-discrimination and equal opportunity legislation and lessens the possibility that students and parents will challenge the school dress code on discrimination and legal grounds. Using the Qld Ed Depts detailed checklist will step you through a successful uniform review.

Modern fabric and style

In Queensland, spring and summer get very hot, and all students (male and female) need shorts available that are cool and comfortable. Similarly, some of our winter days can be extremely cool, and all students should have the option to wear comfortable long pants. For many schools, the wearing of shorts and pants has been limited to boys’ uniforms. An easy way to modernise the uniform is to add girls’ shorts and pants to the uniform policy. Similarly, allowing students to wear shorts or long pants at any stage of the year based on whether the individual feels hot or cold is a sensible position.

Fashions change with time, and while school uniforms do not need to respond to every fashion trend, they should include a range of options, be made of materials, and be in the colours, that young people want to wear. Choosing breathable, stretchy and natural materials with high S.P.F. protection, in basic colours, adds to student comfort and makes items easier to launder and maintain. Creating a uniform that reflects how students dress outside of school, and one that students like, goes a long way to ensuring that they will wear it, and wear it properly, reducing the many uniform infractions schools deal with daily. Education Communication is key When it comes to modernising the uniform worn by students at your school, good communication will be crucial to having a smooth change process. The principal and P&C must communicate clearly with the wider school community, via a variety of methods about why the uniform review is occurring.

A clear questionnaire could be designed that allows all community members input into which changes and/or additions or subtractions to the existing uniform they would or would not support. Questionnaires can be easily created, and the results collated, thanks to online programs like Survey Monkey. Once results have been collated, all results can be clearly communicated back to the school community via all methods available.

Gender equality and gender labels Consider whether your uniform policy needs to have “Girls Uniform” and “Boys Uniform” as headings. Can your school provide a range of suitable options that all students can wear which can be listed as “Student Uniform”? If doing this, do remember that girls are unlikely to want to wear shorts or pants that boys have been wearing for decades, as these will be viewed as ‘boys shorts or pants’ (just as boys are unlikely to want to wear the ‘girls shorts’). Where possible, ensure girls’ and boys’ options of all choices are available, and students are free to choose whichever of these versions they find most comfortable. As girls and boys are encouraged inside and outside of school to challenge gender stereotypes and develop to their full potential, it is important that the uniforms we offer them move away from applying strict gender restrictions.

Most importantly, as school students are the ones expected to wear the uniform, it is imperative we listen to their voices in the change process.

Consider providing students with a range of uniform options to try out and allow them to provide feedback on their preferences. Finally, all decisions made by the principal and the P&C must be clearly explained to the school community, with a full explanation as to why each decision was made. All community members should have the opportunity to respond and raise any concerns they may have.

Knowledge and understanding to work in the world of tomorrow Often when we hear the words creative or creativity, we associate it with art, painting, dancing, singing, or sculpting. When we use these words in the educational environment of today, it broadens its scope to a world that is exciting, challenging, futuristic and engaging. This is exactly what schools need to offer the students of today, to learn and develop their knowledge and understanding to work in the world of tomorrow.

Students need to be creative with their learning and teachers need to be creative with their lesson content and delivery. At Southern Cross Catholic College, we challenge students from every year level to explore their thoughts and ideas, and to extend them to think outside of the box, while offering learning experiences that go beyond the text book, screen and teacher direction.

Students in Year 6 have explored the coldest, driest and windiest place in the world, Antarctica. Through research and several hands-on experiments, the students have learned about the physical and behavioural adaptations of the unique animals that habitat in this frozen land. The ‘Blubber Hand’ and ‘Colour Absorption’ experiments assisted the students to understand the effectiveness of blubber and the colour black in keeping animals warm. The ‘Oily-Mix’ experiment helped to explain how oil glands keep feathers dry and the ‘White Candy Camouflage’ experiment helped the students to appreciate the benefit of camouflage to stay hidden from predators. These hands-on experiments allowed the students to see firsthand the science behind animal adaptations.

In Prep the children were challenged to work as a team to create the tallest possible tower using paddle pop sticks and sticky tape. After the children created their team design, feedback and suggestions were given from other class members and teachers, on ways they could improve their design for it to be taller and sturdier. With adjustments made the team set off to create their design and test out their ideas. This activity explored concepts of mathematical language, measurement, weight, and explored the skills of design, creative thinking, posing questions, problem solving, investigation and teamwork.

Another initiative adopted is that of ‘Eagle hour’, this is where some of high flying creative thinkers are challenged with problem solving activities and research topics of interest. These children are encouraged to explore and learn about things of interest but are challenged to present their learnings by incorporating technology, art, performance, or other ideas that they may have. This group also participates in the ‘Opti-minds Challenge’ where they are challenged to ‘Think, Create and Communicate’ whilst problem solving against teams from other schools.

Being creative is not hard, and does not always mean ‘more’, often it is the simplest thoughts that lead to a greater and better understanding.

Creativity and Problem Solving At Mary MacKillop College, our students are given real life challenges to solve to develop 21st century skills. Our students start their projects with a context. This year our girls were asked to use design thinking skills, using inspiration from their own lives in developing toy trends, wearable technology, food trends and the future of sustainable clothing. These projects are designed with students trying to fix a problem from an area in which they are interested. It is student led with teachers on the side coaching the girls. Students must research products that currently exist, how these can be adapted to better reflect changes in society and technology, in keeping with our Catholic Social Teaching ideals of Stewardship. Students have ownership over ideas and need to be cognisant of time management and organisational skills.

Products are designed in collaboration with peers, are peer reviewed with positive feedback on how to improve. Collaboration skills are important, so all students can get the best learning outcomes.

Students are encouraged to use design thinking skill getting inspiration from within. The teacher is the coach on the side rather than more traditional didactic pedagogy.

The projects are designed to have students thinking differently about their social impact up-cycling and change in food, technology, textiles and sustainability. The education is 21st century in modern classrooms with a focus on problem solving skills.

Developing Creative Minds Inquiry-Based Learning The nature of information and the way we access and use it is evolving before our eyes. We have a responsibility as educators and parents to teach children to be creative thinkers, to value inquiry, reflection and analysis which will enable them to make critical contributions through a global lens. The automated skills that were traditionally taught in schools are still very necessary, however, our children today need more. The most critical skill children need to be successful is the ability to adapt to change; to be flexible and to think, rethink and innovate.

The Moreton Bay Colleges are accredited by the International Baccalaureate (IB) World School organisation to deliver the Primary Years Programme (PYP). Moreton Bay Boys’ College is also authorised to deliver the Middle Years Program (MYP). Using the IB inquiry-based learning as a framework through which to deliver the Australian National Curriculum allows student learning to become authentic and relevant to the real world. Exceptional learning outcomes A student-driven inquiry project in the past resulted in the construction of the student-designed mountain bike track at Moreton Bay Boys’ College. To create the track the boys looked at fitness goals, mathematical equations which formulated the construction of the curves percentages in the inclines, the signage, language and safety as well as minimising the environmental impact to the area. This project incorporated all areas of

In the past, parents may have seen the word ‘creative’ on a report card, used to describe their child’s personality. But the reality is, all children can be taught to be creative and schools use a vast range of techniques to help build creativity in their students.

Why is building creativity important?

Being creative holds many benefits, but one of the most valuable is the ability to overcome a problem or obstacle. Teaching is not just about providing the answers, it’s about providing the tools to find a solution.

Queensland’s new senior syllabuses are underpinned by 21st century learning skills, including creativity. Other 21st century learning skills include: innovation, initiative and enterprise, curiosity and imagination, creativity, generating and applying new ideas, identifying alternatives and seeing or making new links.

In the Australian Curriculum, students develop capability in critical and creative thinking as they learn to generate and evaluate knowledge, clarify concepts and ideas, seek possibilities, consider alternatives and solve problems. Critical and creative thinking involves students thinking broadly and deeply using skills, behaviours and dispositions such as reason, logic, resourcefulness, imagination and innovation in all learning areas at school and in their lives beyond school (www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/f-10curriculum/general-capabilities/critical-and-creative-thinking) At Stuartholme School, creativity is embedded in the curriculum and class plans are designed to include opportunities for students to examine a problem or challenge and devise a plan to reach a successful conclusion.

Project-based learning Stuartholme uses a teaching method called Project-Based Learning (PBL) in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a challenge (Buck Institute for Education, 2017).

In Term 1’s Economics and Business classes, students were challenged to design, cost, market and ultimately sell a product at the Stuartholme Open Day. With only some guidance from the teacher, the students were charged with planning their business and solving problems as they encountered them. The moment a student realises their planned business will operate at a loss, they take action to amend their cost structures, ensuring a profit is particularly satisfying to the teachers and students.

Visible learning

Stuartholme teachers are adaptive learning experts. They can create a classroom climate that helps students achieve their learning goals.

Through visible learning, teachers can see learning through the eyes of students (Visible Learning into Action: International Case Studies of Impact, John Hattie and Deb Masters, October 2015).

In the Physical Education classroom, students enhanced their creativity recently when they were given a task to design and implement a modified game in their ‘Fair Go’ unit. Students had to come up with a game that was inclusive, accessible and fair to people with a specific impairment.

Whether it is through Project-Based or Visible Learning Stuartholme students are challenging and enhancing their creativity through hands-on lessons, where they can learn from the process of overcoming obstacles, creative thinking and problem solving.
