WELCOME TO ALLIANCE 2019!

Welcome to the 2019 Alliance Summit and Excellence In Parent Engagement Awards. Families In Schools (FIS) is thrilled to have you attend this year’s summit. The Alliance Summit is a convening of community, education, business and philanthropic leaders to celebrate parents and strengthen partnerships for greater student and school success.

FIS serves low-income, immigrant, and communities of color knowing that education remains the single most important opportunity for them. We seek to help families/caregivers become knowledgeable and confident advocates for their children’s education, and authentic partners with schools.

To do this, Families In Schools: •D evelops and implements workshops for families on issues including early education, family literacy, and college and career planning.

• Trains school staff on effective parent outreach strategies.

• Advocates for policies that foster parent engagement and ensures parent voice is heard and included in decision making.

From July 2018 – June 2019 Families In Schools: • I mpacted over 10,000 families through direct services in partnership with dozens of schools.

• T rained over 2,000 community based organization and school staff on parent engagement strategies.

• Graduated 68 parent ambassadors.

This work is possible due to the dedication and collaboration of the numerous organizations, funders, and educators that partner with us. It is an opportunity for all of us to connect and interact outside of our usual spaces, and to highlight the incredible work that is being done in our schools, communities, the state of California, and across the nation.

OUR HISTORY Rigorous research in the 1990s indicated that parent engagement was a key strategy to improve student and school performance. Families In Schools was created in 2000 to focus on family engagement as a critical component of school reform and improved student outcomes, in particular for students from low-income, immigrant, and communities of color.

FIS CURRICULAR PROGRAMS The goals of the FIS curricular programs are to provide parents with the knowledge, skills, tools, and confidence to enhance their involvement in their child’s education READ WITH ME engages families in early reading activities by providing a weekly supply of award-winning children’s books into the home, through a rotating library. The program is complemented with lessons for family literacy workshops.

READING ROADS is a five week family literacy curriculum for parents of preschool and elementary school students.

Each lesson helps parents support the literacy development of their child at home, as well as at school.

STEPS TO SUCCESS is a five week curriculum for parents of English Learners (EL). The program builds parent’s skills, knowledge, and confidence to support their child in the reclassification process.

GROWTH MINDSET is a four week curriculum that encourages parents to learn new strategies to support their child’s education. The interactive lessons focus on learning mindsets, family communication, and ways parents can support their child’s development of non-cognitive skills.

TRANSITIONS are programs that enable parents to gain confidence in guiding and monitoring their child’s educational and social development during important transitional stages so the child is prepared for, and ultimately, successful in college. The programs provide interactive lessons focused on the importance of parent involvement in education, socialemotional development and academic success.

COLLEGE KNOWLEDGE ACADEMIES are five week project based programs, for parents and their children that promote early planning and knowledge about postsecondary options. The programs provide interactive lessons focused on building parent/child communication, the benefits of h igher education, financial literacy and college preparation.

FIS TRAININGS CURRICULUM TRAININGS provides staff the opportunity to become familiar with FIS curricular programs, methodology and facilitation practices. At the end of the training, staff will be certified family workshop facilitators.

EFFECTIVE PRACTICES IN FAMILY ENGAGEMENT: FIS offers professional development to help staff effectively leverage parent assets, by increasing their knowledge and skills around engaging parents. Institutes include: Parent Engagement Strategies, Welcoming Environment and Outreach, Recruitment and Retention.

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE IMPLEMENTATION SUPPORT: Customized programs for students and families that strive to close the achievement gap and increase first year post-secondary persistence by providing one-on-one student advising, mentoring, and workshops. Partnerships include: GEAR-UP, Cal-SOAP LA, and the California Emerging Technology Fund (CETF).

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING NETWORKS: Are a series of meetings for teams of professional peers, facilitated by FIS, focused on the topic of family engagement. These meetings provide participants with the opportunity to share experiences, collaborate and learn from each other, with the goal of enhancing their work in the field.

ADVOCACY MEANINGFUL ACTIONS AND FAMILY EMPOWERMENT: FIS is committed to elevating the voices of underserved families to advance equitable, high quality schools and radically reimagine family-school partnerships for enriching students’ academic outcomes. FIS works at building the capacity of parents to lead change in their school districts and inform policy decisions at the local and state level.

Karen L. Mapp, Ed.D., is a senior lecturer on education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) and the faculty director of the Education Policy and Management Master’s Program. Over the past twenty years, Mapp’s research and practice focus has been on the cultivation of partnerships among families, community members and educators that support student achievement and school improvement. She served as the co-coordinator with Professor Mark Warren of the Community Organizing and School Reform Research Project and as a core faculty member in the Doctorate in Educational Leadership (Ed.L.D.) program at HGSE. She is a founding member of the District Leaders Network on Family and Community Engagement as well as the National Family and Community Engagement Working Group, is a trustee of the Hyams Foundation in Boston, MA, and is also on the board of the National Association for Family, School, and Community Engagement (NAFSCE) and the Institute for Educational Leadership (IEL) in Washington, DC. From 2011 to 2013, Mapp served as a consultant on family engagement to the United States Department of Education in the Office of Innovation and Improvement.

OPENING & WELCOME EMCEE: Frances Suavillo, LAUSD Student Board Member

My name is Frances Suavillo and I’m from Carson High School in Carson, California. I moved to the United States from the Philippines in 2010 and I’ve been in the hands of the LAUSD school district since my arrival. I am an AP and honors student, maintaining a GPA of 4.2, and predicted to be the valedictorian of Carson High School’s graduating Class of 2020. I am the president of the California Scholarship Federation (CSF) in Carson High and of my own club, Share the Love, which helps out the homeless in the Los Angeles area. I was elected as a student representative for my school’s board, School Site Council, where I work hand-in-hand with our principal and administrators regarding our school’s issues. I have a passion for education because I personally saw the struggles brought upon by a corrupt and flawed public education system in my home country. I am determined to help other underprivileged nations to follow the steps of the United States in making education a right, not just a privilege. I believe becoming the LAUSD Student Board Member is an important step in making this possible.

2019 EXCELLENCE IN PARENT ENGAGEMENT AWARDEES The Excellence in Parent Engagement Award recognizes the extraordinary achievements of community leaders who successfully promote and implement policies or best practices that facilitate opportunities for underserved families to guide, monitor and support their children’s education. Lilia Mitre

Maribel Lopez is the Director of Community Leadership for GO Public Schools WCC in Richmond, CA. She has deep experience as a former West Contra Costa student, teacher, and current parent of two daughters that attend WCCUSD schools. Maribel was named WCCUSD teacher of the year in 2015 and uses her experiences to help create trusting relationships with families and decision makers centered around social justice. Maribel developed and leads the GO Family Leaders Program (FLP) which is a structured, cohortbased experience in which Family Leaders learn to harness their innate power by developing skills and strategies to support their advocacy efforts. Maribel holds a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in Social Welfare, a CA multiple subjects teaching credential and a Masters in Urban Education from Loyola Marymount University.

Lilia Mitre serves the students and families of Equitas Academy as the Director of Parent Partnerships. As the first university graduate in her family, she knows the power and endless opportunities that come with a college degree. Lilia strongly believes in the Equitas mission of preparing students to graduate from four-year colleges and universities and works relentlessly to ensure they are prepared for college and beyond all while engaging their families on the path to and through college. Lilia finds great joy working closely with families and supporting parents in becoming strong advocates in their child’s education. Being the daughter of immigrant parents, Lilia sees her own family’s experience in the families she supports. She works closely with parents to support their leadership development, as parent leadership is essential and key to achieving significant change within schools and communities.

She is passionate about building and growing strong relationships amongst all stakeholders that will ultimately lead to high academic achievement and success for all scholars.

Bilma Ruano, is the proud mother of three girls attending Mann Elementary in the Anaheim Elementary School District. Seven years ago, she met with the Principal and the FACE Community Liaison.

She was critical, defensive, and felt uncomfortable.

She was supported with translation and was invited to look at the school from the ‘inside out’. She became involved in the school as a volunteer, in the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), School Site Council and saw an improvement in her daughters’ academics and attitude towards education.

Erika Eva (Chase) Tracy is the Education Director of the Hoopa Valley Tribe where she lives and works in Na:tinixw, the Hoopa Valley Reservation, located in the northern interior of Humboldt County, California. She is an enrolled citizen of the Hoopa Valley Tribe and also a descendant of the Shinnecock Indian Nation of New York. She is a graduate of Hoopa Valley High School, holds a B.A. from Stanford University in Comparative Studies in Race & Ethnicity, and an M.A. in Human and Social Development from the University of Victoria. She has proudly spent the majority of her career working with Indigenous students of all ages, in her homelands, striving to strengthen community based education that is reflective of and centered around the rich cultures, languages, experiences, strengths and values each student holds.

She has grown as a parent and parent leader in a variety of roles including facilitating multiple parent education classes, being a part of the PTA leadership, and as a Parent Leadership Institute instructor. As a result of these experiences, she is currently serving as the chairperson of the district DAC/DELAC advisory committee supporting twentythree schools. She is a champion for her children’s school, district, and most importantly, a role model for her girls.

This has created a state of uncertainty, fear and distrust for families and students in our schools. In this workshop you will learn about the most important laws that protect immigrant students and their families and the knowledge necessary to ensure a safe environment in our schools and communities. What strategies do districts and communities use to pursue equity? How can research address these questions? Learn about new findings and research priorities from the USC Rossier Center on Education Policy, Equity and Governance (CEPEG) based on dialogues with 149 local education and community leaders. This session will provide participants with the opportunity to experience a sample of the Families In Schools All Children Count: Census 2020 Toolkit. The goal of the toolkit is to engage children, parents/caregivers and early childhood education/preschool providers on the importance of the census, and how counting everyone will benefit our communities. __________________________________________________

In this session, participants will be able to identify how the FSI supports parents as learners, promotes parent engagement in the school, community and focuses on improving outcomes for K-12 students. __________________________________________________

Using the Telenovela as a Tool to Navigate Special Education Heinsbergen Room | ASSN Presented by: Ms. Lozano Caldera, Equity and Excellence Coordinator, Arlington Public Schools Gina Argotti, Arlington Public Schools Family and Community Engagement – FACE Action Team parent member Workshop Description: Navigating special education is a very difficult process for any family, and even more so for immigrant families who might not yet be proficient in English nor familiar with the rights and services available for children with special needs. Workshop Description: We know that a child’s health is directly linked to their academic achievement, but we also know that a child’s health and the quality of their schools are influenced by conditions in which they live, so-called Social Determinants. To address these social determinants – including voting, civic participation, and access to quality education – AltaMed has launched its My Vote, My Health™ 5-touch model for civic engagement and uplifting and empowering families and with an innovative Integrated Voter Engagement (IVE) program that promotes long-term civic participation and power-building. Leveraging their role as key trusted messenger in our communities, AltaMed is engaging and empowering their employees, patients and service area residents to use the power of their vote to improve their health and the quality of life in their communities.
