HEADlines TIMELY NEWS FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF NEUROSURGERY
Spring 2022 - Summer 2022
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF NEUROSURGERY: I hope you are having a great summer! This is a season of farewell and hellos for our Department. We congratulate our 2 graduating residents and 6 fellows who have completed their training with us. Their neurosurgical education excelled in clinical care and research, along with exceptional mentoring by our faculty and others at CU. We know that patients will be in good hands with this next generation of gifted surgeons who will join academic organizations or community practices. Our Department continues to grow. Learn more about several new faculty and staff introduced in this newsletter. In this edition, we welcome 2 new residents and 5 fellows into our Department family. During this spring’s competitive recruitment, they were selected from a pool of applicants from all over the world. All are at the top of their game. First, as our new residents begin their 7-year training, they join the other 12 residents currently in the program who study with our neurosurgeons (experts in the fields of spine, cerebrovascular, brain tumor, movement disorders and more). Second, after graduating their residency, our new fellows will pursue a 1- to 2-year program with their fellowship director in a specialized area of neurosurgery. We now have 7 fellows currently in training. Thank you for your support that advances education, research and clinical care. Your generosity helps our mission to make Colorado the healthiest brain state in the nation. Stay safe as you vacation, hike, swim, mountain bike and more in this great state of ours. And wear your helmets! Kevin O. Lillehei, MD Professor & Ogsbury-Kindt Chair Department of Neurosurgery
CELEBRATING OUR GRADUATES! David Mann, MD was recognized at the graduation reception for his excellence in teaching and training others. David has accepted a neurosurgery position with HealthOne at SkyRidge Hospital in Centennial, CO.
Neurosurgery Faculty, Fellows, Residents and Staff gathered in downtown Denver, June 25th to honor our two resident graduates, both of whom are staying in the Denver area.
Frank Walch, MD was recognized for his administrative, planning and leadership skills. Frank has accepted a position with Intermountain Health (formerly SCL) at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lafayette, CO.
FAREWELL TO OUR FELLOWS Dr. Gattozzi will join the “Acclaim Physician Group” in Fort Worth, TX. He appreciates the extensive anatomy lab at CU which has provided him excellent resources in Skull Base Neurosurgery. He will miss Dr. Youssef’s sense of humor, their weekly cappuccinos, and the entire ENT faculty. He thanks his wife, Jennifer, and their four wonderful children. They always make him smile, no matter how tired he is!
Dom Gattozzi (Skull Base Fellow)
Dr. Malik, upon finishing her Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowship at Children’s Hospital, Colorado, will travel onto Sick Children’s Hospital in Toronto for additional training in Neurosurgery.
Noor Malik (Pediatric Fellow)
Alejandro Mercado (Complex Spine Fellow)
Dr. Mercado (originally from Argentina) is a military neurosurgeon with the rank of Captain. After completing this Complex Spine Fellowship, he currently has two good job offers. He thanks the entire Spine Division, with special gratitude to Drs. Witt, Lennarson, Finn and Craig. He will never forget their generosity in sharing the care of their patients with him. He has special memories in the homes of Dr. Cava and Dr. Lennarson, which include watching Dr. Lennarson jump on the trampoline with his two young daughters (ages 2 and 3). He thanks his wife (a neuro-intensivist) for her support and looks forward to having more time to travel to Argentina, visit family, drink great wine, play the guitar and pursue his many passions.
Dr. Samples completed most of his medical training in San Antonio, Texas and is excited to join the Children’s Hospital, Colorado Neurosurgery Department with appointments in Colorado Springs and Denver. He chose to stay with CU because of his outstanding mentors (now partners). He has enjoyed all of the extracurricular activities and the near daily laughter in grand rounds. When not working he enjoys time with his fiancé, Alexis, and their one year old son, Landon (along with their two labs, one great dane and three large cats). Derek Samples (Pediatric Fellow)
Sarah Travers (Neuro Oncology Fellow)
Dr. Travers is excited to return to her home in St. Louis where she will join a private practice group called “Neurosurgery of St. Louis.” She has loved her time at CU and received exactly what she had hoped for, that is, seeing how other neurosurgeons practice and filling in knowledge gaps from her residency. For example, she is now much better at performing awake craniotomies, endoscopic techniques, Stealth and intraoperative MRI procedures and more. Sarah notes that she had much in common with Dr. Lillehei, her mentor, including their July birthdays, their love of Christmas music, close family members named Anne, pets (golden retrievers), favorite TV shows, and their vacation homes on lakes in the northern Midwest. Sarah’s husband, Nick, who works in sports memorabilia, plans to open a baseball card shop in St. Louis. Sarah plans to write a children’s book about the brain with her brother as illustrator. She eventually hopes to provide mentorship and resources to girls who do not have the opportunities she had growing up. Dr. Yaseen is Jordanian American and feels lucky and delighted to have been at CU. “I will say that I will leave a piece of my heart here in Colorado.” He is headed to a Complex Spine & Peripheral Nerve Fellowship at the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia (the city of his birth). Dr. Yaseen’s wife is an architect and they have two young boys. Although he loves to spend time with his boys, his family is currently living in Germany. Fun facts: Dr. Yaseen speaks three languages and was once a professional soccer player!
Tareq Yaseen (Functional & Stereotactic Neurosurgery Fellow)
