Hello As the beautiful autumnal colours creep into the parkland the passing seasons remind us that another year is waning and sets us in the mood for reflection. The theme of the Callendar House programme for this autumn centres on the idea of reflection, as we continue with our events commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of the First Word War: Our Area and the First World War – Memorial, Reflection and Restoration. We have two very different and yet similar exhibitions launching in the Park Gallery and the 2nd Floor Galleries this season. In the Park Gallery John Shankie’s Refractory and Refrigeration is a visual art response to the themes of memorial, reflection, and restoration, in connection to the First World War. And, in the 2nd Floor Galleries, objects from our collection sit alongside work by ceramic artist and former Marine, Ehren Tool, whose work is an uncompromising response to war and conflict and hopes to inspire conversations about these subjects. We’ve also lots of ways to get involved with your own reflections and those of our area as our Lunch and Brunch talks return for the autumn season; we host a special event
reminiscing about the fabulous shopping in the 50s and 60s; and invite people from the community to participate in creating an exciting local touring exhibition telling stories of the First World War. And there’s still plenty of fun to be had for the kids as we join in once again with the Big Roman Week celebrations with an event where 7-12 year olds can learn about Roman times and participate in dressing up, Roman manoeuvres, and examine objects from the Roman period. We’re also launching a new series of fun interactive workshops for toddlers and their grownups on Mondays, Toddling O’Clock, with sensory play, music, and movement with a different enjoyable theme each week. Finally, don't forget to pop in to the Callendar House Gift shop where you will find a selection of unusual gifts, jewellery and souvenirs!

Ehren’s works were made in response to items from our collection and have images from the collection sitting alongside images of conflicts past and present.

It is our hope that this show will help people to think about the subject of war and what it means, in the past, and in the world today. We want to open up the commemorations of World War I by starting a conversation about conflicts: where those conversations lead is up to you.
With the anniversary of the outbreak of World War I occurring in 2014 we have decided to look at war and conflict in its widest sense. Using items from the collection the 2nd Floor Galleries will display objects used in wartime, at home and abroad. These range from the everyday used in extraordinary ways, lamps modified for blackouts to help avoid detection during aerial bombardments, to the extraordinary made ordinary - gas masks which became children’s playthings. War and conflicts change people who fight in them, the societies who are touched by them and those who come afterwards. As part of this show we are working with American ceramic artist Ehren Tool to add another layer to story. A former marine,

Changes to the physical landscape are tangible, even though our memories forget how things were. Changes to the economic and social milieu are harder to grasp. JOHN SHANKIE REFRACTORY AND REFRIGERATION 2 August to 25 October 2014
John Shankie is a Lanark born artist and lecturer at the Glasgow School of Art, who works across a wide range of mediums, taking everyday objects and processes and drawing a sense of poetry from them. Coming to prominence as an artist in the 1990s, he has exhibited widely in the UK, Europe, and internationally. His work takes simple everyday actions and materials - cooking a meal, making a phone call, a fridge - and finds a rich seam of meaning in them with a deeper emotional or social resonance. As a former engineer, he is interested in making, mechanics, and the technical process, but explores them for their ability to express ideas or emotions in unexpected ways. Refractory and Refrigeration is an exhibition showing as part of GENERATION, a major, nation-wide exhibition programme showcasing some of the best and most significant artists to have emerged from Scotland over the last 25 years, and is part of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme. The exhibition shows an artistic response through visual art to the themes of memorial, reflection, and restoration, in connection to the First World War, as part of commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of war.

10 NOV 2014 – 17 JAN 2015 Strictly Botanical is an exhibition curated by internationally renowned local artist Fiona Strickland bringing together a stunning collection of botanical watercolours and works in pencil by a dedicated group of artists, passionate and committed to documenting plants in minute detail. We are delighted to exhibit work by internationally celebrated botanical artists, Robert McNeill, Sharon Tingey, and Mary Dillon. Displaying a variety of individual styles across different mediums, this exhibition brings together works that are not only botanically correct, but informative, educational and above all, wonderful works of art. Interested in learning more about the Falkirk area in the First World War? Then join our group of volunteers to help research and tell local First World War stories for an exciting local touring exhibition. On 13th August we’re holding two ticketed taster sessions where you can come, have a go, and learn more about the project. If you’ve been inspired by the taster sessions, you will then have the opportunity to become a project volunteer. The volunteers will meet each Wednesday from 20th August to 12th November, to work together to create the exhibition. As a volunteer you will have the chance to undertake research in Falkirk Museums and Archives, learn new skills in handling and interpreting heritage objects and documents, and work with a professional artist and storyteller to create a new community resource which will share previously untold stories about Falkirk in the First World War. No experience is necessary, as the sessions will be structured to guide you through the research process. Please note spaces in the group are limited. 8

These are packed with self-led fun-filled activities for children to explore the House, Park, and Museums, with some help from their grown-ups, and it takes approximately 1 hour to complete each backpack. Your choices at Callendar House are “John Muir: Explorer!” and “Browsing with the Bairns”, and at Kinneil Museum “Kinneil Adventurer”. Backpacks are free to use with a £5 deposit and can be collected from the Gift Shop or Reception. HISTORIC CALLENDAR HOUSE This Five Star rated Historic House features permanent exhibitions The Story of Callendar House, a history covering the 11th to the 19th centuries; The Antonine Wall Rome’s Northern Frontier; and Falkirk: Crucible of Revolution 1750-1850, telling how the local area was transformed during the first century of the industrial era. Located on the first floor of Callendar House in the Morning Room with superb views of the park, the Tearoom is open for brunches, lunches, snacks, and takeaway from 10am-4pm Monday to Saturday and 2pm-4pm Sundays. Autumn in the Tearoom brings both a refresh of the menu and the introduction of our new children’s menu, making the Tearoom an ideal venue for the whole family to enjoy a bite to eat. We’ll also be
