The Book of Good Practices 2018

The Book of Good Practices is a project from FAJDP - Federation of Youth Associations of Porto.

2018 edition was done by Ana Margarida Carvalho, inserted in "Geração Z" programme from IPDJ (Portuguese Youth and Sports Institute), under the coordination of Tiago Gouveia.

Introduction FAJDP - Federation of Youth Associations of Porto is a nonprofit, non-partisan and secular organization founded in 1986.

It was the first representative structure of youth associations in Portugal, created even before FNAJ (National Federation of Youth Associations).

Its mission is to represent youth associations from the municipalities of the district of Porto next to public and political powers, defending their interests and promoting a more active and solidary citizenship by training young people.

Nowadays, their main project is "Casa das Associaçþes" (Associations' Home), a space of sharing and contact between different Youth Associations and that offers them all they need for their activities.

Presentation

2018 edition of the Book of Good Practices was the main project that I developed during my volunteering time at FAJDP, on IPDJ "Geração Z" programme.

It aims to present projects and good practices from several youth associations in the district of Porto. This is made for other associations and all community but specially for young people, to show them that they can be an active part of the society and to encourage them to join the associative moviment.

Clube de Desporto C+S de Lavra Clube de Desporto C+S de Lavra is a non-profit youth association located in Matosinhos municipality.

It was founded in 1995, by Parents' Association from Lavra junior school, to support the athletics club.

In the beginning, this association was focused only in sports activities but later they started organizing summer camps and exchanging programmes.

In 2013, the association moved to a new building, which allowed the creation of an Activity Centre for free-time activities.

PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES Athletics training, regarding Throwing (javelin, shot put, hammer and discus), Jumping (long jump, high jump and pole vault) and Running (sprints, middle and long-distance and hurdling).

These are particularly to young people from 10 to 18 but everyone older than 6 can join the team.

There are around 200 athletes who participate in competitions at weekends.

Activity Center: it helps children from the 2th to the 9th grade in their studies. The association picks them at schools and takes care of them until 19h30.

Holiday camps: during school holidays, the Clube promotes holiday camps, having hosted more than 150 children in 2018. On Summer holidays, every week the activities are different, such as sports, going to the beach and swimming pools, cinema and aquatic and fun parks.

GOOD PRACTICES Training in group promotes socializing and stimulates competition between the athletes, improving their results.

Experience and knowledge from older members is essential to the association and their opinion is very important.

Sharing experiences with other associations and taking part on training programmes are essential to the team.

Aknowledgement of youth importance as members of the society and creating strategies to bring them closer to the association, despite the hurdles.

Grupo Recreativo de Regufe Grupo Recreativo de Regufe was founded in the 25th of April 1988 initially with the aim to promote leisure activities and sports for the population of this neighbourhood.

In 1991, they also began to participate as an organizated group in "Rusgas de S찾o Pedro", restarting an old tradition.

Nowadays, besides participation in S찾o Pedro festivities in P처voa de Varzim, this organization also provides sports activities in several categories, and promotes inumerous social projects and activities as a Youth Association.

PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES Promotion of youth sports formation in football, athletics, ping-pong and MTB. Football practice is free and the club provides transportation for trainings and games.

"Fazer o Bem" project: goods, clothes and food collection that are given according to the families' needs and when requested; weekly, it is given a box of essential products to families supported by the municipality.

Participation in "Rusgas de São Pedro": Grupo Recreativo de Regufe represents Regufe neighbourhood at São Pedro festivities in Póvoa de Varzim, walking through the cities' various neighbourhoods and offering bread with sardines and wine to those who walk down the street.

Participation in exchange programms, related with Erasmus and Youth Exchange programms, especially with young people from families in need, and EVS. Organization of an annual huge picnic for the local community with different activities to promote socializing.

GOOD PRACTICES Respect for the local tradition and this association history.

Forging partnerships with ohter Associations: after meeting Cidade Curiosa at a FNAJ event, GRR has adopted some of their activities and the two associations have been holding events together.

Empowering the Youth: starting to prepare association's future, by giving power to the most dedicated young members. Initially, they are helped by older members; progessively they will gain more responsibility within the association.

Historioscรณpio Teatro de marionetas Historioscรณpio was created in 2013 by two friends that worked on Theatre and decided to take it to schools.

Nowadays, it is a touring company of 12 people whose plays are headed to children and families.

They aim to promote children thinking and concerns on relevant issues, such as the environment. To achieve this, they forge a bond between the characters and the audience. They perform at schools, theatre halls, libraries, events and Book Fairs. They also run workshops.

PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES Plays at shools with focus on fictional stories and historic and ambiental issues.

The type of the play depends on the production.

Participation in events such as Book Fairs and AquaPorto, thanks to partnerships with municipalities and libraries across all the country but specially in Porto district.

Workshops and discussions after the show that promote children's thinking and acknowledgement of the issues portrayed in the play.

At the moment, they have 8 active productions. One of them is "O Cardume" (The Shoal), focused on ocean pollution by the plastics. Children are sensitized to reuse plastic (by the usage and making of puppets from reusable plastic). The show has original music.

GOOD PRACTICES Each member of the team gives the best they can do, being responsible for the part of the show that is related to their work field.

During the play, it is forged a bond with the audience, which allows the spread of the message in an informal way.

The discussion and the workshops stimulate childrens' critical thinking and creativity, sensitizing them for the theme.

Jรก T'Explico J'a T'Explico is composed by college students from Porto who help children and young people from the 5th to the 9th grades with money problems in their school work.

It was created by a group of friends that wanted to give children in need a chance, helping them achieving good grades, promoting their cultural taste and developing their critical thinking.

Besides teaching lessons, monthly they organize leisure activities, to forge bonds between the explainers and the children. Their main goal is to boost children's self-esteem and transform them.

PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES Organization of explanation groups: three or four explainers are in charge of two or three children, according to their profile, which allows the development of a friendship between them and makes teaching work easier.

Two recruitment periods, in the beginning of academic terms.

Association members are divided in Explainers, which help the children in their school work, and Organizers, that are responsible for financials, human resources and relationships, marketing and external relations.

Organization of one leisure activity per month, for socializing and promotion of children's cultural taste: bowling, going to the cinema, peddypaper, activities in a radical park, sports activities.

GOOD PRACTICES Buying Jรก T'Explico card provides discounts in partners through a low price and gives money to the association.

Leisure activities are made thanks to partnerships. in exchange of promotion of the company.

Explainers are in touch with the people responsible for the child, which is essential to the project.

Juventude Unida de Mosteirรณ In parallel with portuguese revolution, at 24th April 1974, Juventude Unida de Mosteirรณ was created to prepare Porto's Auxiliar Bishop visit to the parish.

Now, completely dissociated from church, it is an association that aims to provide numerous activities to the members of its community, such as sports, theatre, music and dance.

PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES Practice of sports: football, karate, ping-pong and gymnastics. The choice of activities is made upon members' needs. The practice of sports activities is free, but you must be a JUM member. This rule increases the number of members and, at the same time, offers services to the population at a reasonable price.

Music and dance classes.

Theatre group for adults and, more recently, creation of a theatre group for children and teenagers.

Organization of popular festivities ("Janeiras" singing, Carnival party, Saint Martin celebration).

Participation in amateur theatre events from Inatel, IPDJ (Qualifica fair) and Vila do Conde municipality to promote the association.

GOOD PRACTICES JUM's birthday during all April month: greyhounds racing (old tradition), walking/bicycle ride, theatre nights, traditional games, sports groups performance.

Theatre Fair in July, in cooperation with other theatre groups from Vila do Conde: theatre plays every Wednesday and Saturday of the month.

MEDesTU

MEDesTU is a youth non-profit organization founded in 2013 at Porto. It promotes youth active participation and knowledge about Arabic and Islamic worlds.

Using non-formal education techniques, it helps young people to grow as a person, giving them room to explore their own ideas and opportunitites to make their personal choices.

MEDesTU also promotes several cultural, social, educational, leisure and sports activities.

Their slogan is "Contigo a bordo, fazemos Mundo" (With you on board, we make the World").

PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES MOSAICO Project: intercultural initiatives, at local, national and international levels, to spread Arabic and Islamic Worlds.

BOMBORDO: awareness and training activities in terms of knowledge, skills and attitudes at schools or directed to a target public.

BOMBORDO E+ is particularly important; it envolves mobility projects related with Erasmus+ Youth in Action programme.

PT MED SCI: volunteering work promotion at international work volunteering locations from Service Civil International global movement.

“Boccia for all�: international collaboration project of Erasmus+ Sports, that aims to map portuguese good practices on Boccia on a book and a website. This will be a platform to provide schools, institutions and Boccia athletes useful informations.

GOOD PRACTICES

European Voluntary Service (EVS) in Arabic and Islamic countries.

In 2016, more than 30 EVS volunteers spent a month in Morocco and in 2018 10 volunteers spent a month in Cairo, Egypt.

These projects create connections between the two countries.

Núcleo de Jornalismo Académico do Porto NJAP - Porto Academic Journalism Group was born with JUP - Porto Academic Newspaper in 1987, being the oldest academic newspaper in the country.

It aims to be Porto Academic community voice, focusing on students' importance as members of the society. To achieve this, JUP is an essential part of the project, but they also promote visits and workshops regarding Journalism, Design and Photography.

Two recruitment seasons, one in each academic term.

Visits to RTP, Antena 1 and Jornal de NotĂ­cias, to sensitize NJAP members for different social media.

Radio locution, public speaking, photography and journalistic writing workshops to develop this skills on association members.

Talking with JUP: meetings with JUP members during recruitment season on October 2018, to get eventual future members to know JUP and clarify all their doubts.

GOOD PRACTICES Every student of Porto Academic community may be part of NJAP, not only Journalism students.

A method of quotas will ensure part of association spending.

JUP is an independent entity. NJAP only chooses its director, to create a connection between the two organizations.

Partnerships with other associations, Junior Empresas and FAJDP.

Pint Of Science Porto Pint of Science is an international project that started in 2013 and was brought to Portugal in 2018.

Pint of Science Portugal, particularly Porto team, in a nonprofit organization that wants to turn scientific discussion accessible to people in general, increasing society culture on the investigation done at portuguese colleges. To achieve this, they promote a Science festival, which is organized in the entire world at the same time.

In Portugal, the first edition took place at Lisbon and Porto and in 2019 it will also happen in Aveiro, Braga and Braganรงa.

PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES international Science Festival: threenights event in May. Scientists are invited to present their projects in a simple and relaxed way in a bar, for people in general. The session starts with a little theme presentation by the scientist followed by a longer discussion with the audience.

In 2018, at Porto, this event took place in 3 bares, each one related to a theme (Neuroscience, Engineering and Biology and Earth Sciences) and each night devoted to a topic. Bares are located near each other, to allow people to go to all of them if they want.

Participation in events such as Comunication in Science Congress, that took plane in FIgueira de Castelo Rodrigo.

Session at British Embassy in Lisbon.

GOOD PRACTICES Science Festival sessions are all in portuguese and all the scientists invited work in Porto, to ease communication between them and the public and promote local science investigation. The choice of the themes in each city is made upon Science made in that region.

The association is self-sustaining, thanks to the tickets sold, sponsors and partnerships.

Refugees Welcome Porto Refugees Welcome Porto is an informal group formed by 22 young volunteers that is part of the global network Refugees Welcome. This movement started in Germany and its goal is to provide home for refugees, by giving them a room in the house of local inhabitants that want to shelter them. This idea came to Portugal in 2015, first in Lisbon and shortly after, in 2016, it was brought to Porto. Besides helping refugees find a place to stay, Refugees Welcome Porto also contributes for their integration in the community.

PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES Portuguese classes: classes given by volunteers where conversation skills are developed.

"Alto Comissariado": mentoring programme of different professional fields, such as Medicine, that help refugees from the same area to be able to work in Portugal.

Flatsharing: local inhabitants can register to welcome a refugee in their house and Refugees Welcome Porto matches those who need a home and those who offer it.

Psychological and legal support provided by volunteers of those areas.

Belonging to an international network allows the participation in international meetings and european projects and the establishment of international partnerships.

GOOD PRACTICES Multicultural event COM, which aims to promove interculturalism and the acceptance of other cultures.

"Agasalha" campaign: clothes and shoes collecting campaign that occured durind 2017 Winter to send to Lesbos. All the itens were donated and it was raised money only for the transportation.

"Refugeless" documentary exhibition, whose profit contibuted to three projects. It envolved the participation of young people from Greece, Turkey and Serbia.

Conclusion All the associations in this book share the same goal: work for their community. This is achieved through differents ways by each one of them, making all of them unique and needed in the community they are located.

In all of them is also evident a wish to evolve, thinking about the future and how to improve the association and the services offered. This can be accomplished, according to several associations, by the establishment of partnerships, uniting efforts to provide young people all they need. And, in general, this is the message that is book wants to convey, being a space for sharing experiences and learning.

Conclusion In a personal perspective, making this book allowed me to get in touch with several associations from different fields and with various projects. And this was my main goal when I signed up for this volunteering project at FAJDP. Last but not the least, it is important to leave a message for the young people. Youth associations work for you, but especially they should work WITH you. And this wish to become an active member of the society must start within you.
