fairways community YARD SALE A SUCCESS!
The streets of Fairways were very busy on Saturday, September 21 for the Community Yard Sale.
A big thank you to Bonnie Johnson for taking the lead and getting this event organized. 70+ homes took part, and Bonnie and her team handed out maps at the gates showing the locations of the homes taking part plus they made sure there were plenty of directional signs throughout Fairways to guide the shoppers.
The sale was posted as an event on Facebook and on Nextdoor with regular reminders and updates to encourage outside visitors and there was signage, including banners, outside the gates.
“I am so glad that the yard sale was such a success,” said Bonnie. “There were three people at the gates passing out maps and we had a total of 250 maps passed out by noon. There were so many cars in line waiting to come in before 9:00 a.m. that we had to open

the gates early as they were backing up on 50! It was perfect that the Food Pantry fundraiser was going on at the same time as I know hungry shoppers took advantage of the food for sale!
Special thanks to the crew that stepped up to help me including Susan Creighton, Greg Eakle and Vivian Scott, who were at the front gate at 8:30 passing out the maps and Vivian also helped me put up the pink signs in the back of the park. Maryann and Ron Wilson took the front half of the park putting out the pink signs. Martin Williamson and Marty Kane helped install all the signs outside the front of the Fairways entrance. Thank you again to everyone who made this yard sale such a success! As the saying goes, It takes a Village!”
Special thanks to resident photographer Steve Buyea for capturing some moments during the day!

A few months ago, many residents contacted the FHAOI Board concerned about the noxious odors that were coming from their water faucets. The Board contacted an Orange County approved laboratory, Advanced Environmental Laboratories in Altamonte Springs, and arranged to get water samples from Fairways tested.
AEL tested for metals and for bacteria and the test results showed that Fairways water is in compliance with the EPA standards. Only fluoride and PH were out of range. Fluoride occurs naturally in surface and groundwater and communities may add fluoride to their water supply to achieve the level recommended to prevent tooth cavities. The high PH level is expected, as Florida does have hard water – water that has a high concentration of dissolved minerals, particularly calcium and magnesium. Check out the detailed reports online at ISSU.com/Fairwaysconnect.

Over the past four years, while serving on the Board, I have met so many great people in the community. Had I not been President, I would never have met this many people.
MARK KORNMANN FHAOI PRESIDENT

As we head into the last three months of the year and we elect new FHAOI board members for 2025, I was reminded Sunday at church from my pastor not to be distracted-but be “Undistracted in our Service.” It made me think about Fairways and my time as President.
Over the past four years, while serving on the Board, I have met so many great people in the community. Had I not been President, I would never have met this many people. I have learned so much about life, and more importantly, I have learned a great deal about the need for comprehensive reform in how we take care of our elderly—Medicare, Social Security, medical expenses, inflation, and mental health. We all need to be focused on elderly care and make sure our government leaders understand this issue is important—up to now, they have been distracted when it comes to the elderly population issues.
I have also had the privilege of working alongside great board colleagues who have worked tirelessly for the residents of Fairways.
A Note from the President 2025 FHAOI Elections
For the 2025 FHAOI Elections, we have three board seats open. Each of these seats are two-year terms. If you are interested in running for the FHAOI Board, please send an email to FHAOIBoard@gmail.com indicating your interest in running.
At the meeting, there will be opportunity to nominate someone from the floor that evening. We will then pause the Annual Meeting and open the Elections. The Elections will close at 9 pm that evening.
If you want to check to see if you are a registered member of the FHAOI and eligible to vote, please come to one of the four registration days. The first one was Thursday, September 12 at the Board Meeting at the Master’s Clubhouse. The Board was there from 5-8 pm. If you were not registered, you were able to complete a membership form. Remember, if you registered in the last four years for FHAOI, you do not have to register again. We will have three registration days in October at the Greenbrier. On Tuesday, October 1 and Thursday, October 3 from 12-2 pm we will be set up at the FHAOI Office which is the first office on the left as you head up the stairs, before the library. On Saturday, October 5, we will have registration hours from 12-2 pm at the Greenbrier.
Please make sure you are registered to vote in the FHAOI Election and please attend our meeting on October 10 at 6 pm at the Master’s Clubhouse!!
They gave numerous hours to the organization to make it better, to make events at Fairways the best, and to make Fairways the best place to live.
To all of you, I say “THANK YOU.” This community is better because you were “Undistracted in Your Service.” Trust me, many times you had to make sure you blocked out the noise, otherwise you would become distracted.
To my Fairways folks, I also say THANK YOU for giving me this opportunity, for trusting me and for supporting me. As we move forward, we need to give our new board our support and do everything we can to help them be successful. There are many issues facing Fairways residents, and we need FHAOI Leaders to be undistracted as they work through these issues and help all of us to be equipped to address these issues with management.
As residents and neighbors, we need to make sure that we do not allow HTA to pit us against each other in resolving issues they should be addressing. I see this often, but we are also to blame because we fall for it—DON’T LET YOURSELF BE DISTRACTED.
Over the next three months, I will make sure that I am “Undistracted in Service.”

“Happy Fall everyone. Although it does not feel much like the fall I grew up in with apple picking and hot apple cider, at least I know there is no snow on the horizon! A big warm welcome back to all our snowbirds.”
We will be surprising some residents again this year with a Boo Basket. If you find one on your doorstep, please fill it up with treasures and pay it forward by surprising another Fairways resident.
Courtesy Van is back in full operation. I am so incredibly happy to announce that John Cutsinger has warmly accepted to be Fairways courtesy van driver. He has many exciting activities planned in the coming months. John will take a group of residents to weekly shopping and fun adventures. Let us all give a big thank you to Johnny.
Finally, the laundry facility is opened. We have fresh new paint, décor, lighting, fans and most of all, new laundry equipment. I apologize for the delays, and I appreciate your patience as we pushed hard to renovate the laundry room and make it as comfortable as possible for your use.
I am sure you have noticed all the new homes arriving at Fairways recently. Our superhero sales team have already pre-sold two of these new homes. Some residents are asking why the new homes are so much higher than the older homes. There are a few reasons for this. One reason is the construction is different with higher ceilings and a 3-12 pitched roof. Also, the building codes have changed, and they require the homes to be set higher.

We have recently been experiencing numerous issues with the front gates, most of which are being caused by misuse. Each time the gates are forced open or broken we must be put on the gate company’s repair schedule which, in the summer, is quite long. One incident that comes to mind was on a Friday evening. I noticed two delivery vans, one in the resident’s entry and one at the kiosk. The person at the kiosk was out of his truck just pushing buttons on the keypad, obviously making the situation worse.
Each time a code is entered, no matter how many times you enter it, the system will have to try each number sequence entered. If a wrong code is entered twenty times, the system will have to try all twenty codes, thus the driver gets frustrated and figures the gate is not working, when in fact, it goes through the sequence of wrong codes and when the next correct code entered, it opens right up. Remember to let your friends and family know to push the pound button first before the 4-digit code. It will save a lot of frustration. THANK YOU - Thank you to those residents who are out working around their homes freshening up the landscape and planting flowers. It looks beautiful.
My personal thanks to:
Ruban Elosegui Juana Villaneuva Felix M Santiago Leslie Brown Robert Connors, Jr.
Hometown America Offers New Courtesy Van Service

The van will leave promptly at 10:30 am at the Masters with an expected return around 12:30 pm. Shopping residents must be able to get into and out of the van with little assistance. Latin America Club
By Sylvia Vega, Club Secretary
The month of October is a month that brings us to a celebration of cultures. Hispanic Heritage month runs from September 15thOctober 15th. During this month we get to celebrate the cultures, achievements and contributions of Hispanics and Latinos in the United States whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. September 15th is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries such as: Costa Rica. El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16th and September 18th, respectively.
We at the Latin American Club, have been hard at work preparing for our Hispanic Heritage Dance, which will be held on Saturday, October 5th at the Master’s Clubhouse from 6:00-10:30 pm. All Fairways residents are invited to come and celebrate with us. Tickets are available for purchase and can also be purchased at the door. Tickets are $10. There will be music, raffles, best heritage attire and the best dance couple contest, in addition to share the wealth. Food will be served. You are welcome to bring your favorite Heritage dish from your country to share.
As always, our general member meeting was held on Thursday August 22nd, and we celebrated all our August member birthdays. Our general meetings are open to all Fairways residents and are held on the fourth Thursday of every month at 6:00 pm at the Master’s Clubhouse. After a brief informational meeting we enjoy birthday cake, and games like dominoes and bingo, and we would love to see you there.
You can reach the club at our newly revamped Facebook page at Latin American Club at Fairways (LACF) or by email at latinamericanclub2024@gmail.com. The club President Gladys Carpena can also be contacted directly at either (201) 710-0753 or (407) 456-3091.

Sandy and I would like to give a special shoutout to everyone who supported us during our fundraiser on Saturday, the 21st.
Not only were the monetary donations amazing, but we are also incredibly grateful to the residents who dropped off golf balls. Thanks to your kindness, we collected between 1,800 and 2,000 golf balls that day!
Remember, these donations are our biggest source of income to keep the food pantry going, especially during the eight months when Sandy and James are home. Your support helps us continue serving our community, and we sincerely appreciate every contribution.
Let’s keep this program going!
Shelly, Sandy and James
You’ve Been BOO’d!
FAIRWAYS PANTRY FOOD
The BOO Program is a fun way to spread some spooky cheer throughout our community while raising funds for the Fairways Food Pantry. While Kim and Liz have secretly “BOO’d” your yard, it’s now your turn to keep the spirit alive!
How It Works:
You’ve been BOO’d!
1. A “BOO” sign has appeared in your yard, and now you can pass it on to someone else.
2. Fill out the form they will leave for you. information and donation (optional). Any amount is appreciated, but participation is the most important part! Pick the next yard you’d like to “BOO” by writing their address on the form
3. Place the form and donation inside the Ziploc bag attached to the back of the “BOO” sign. We’ll collect it within 24 hours and move the “BOO” to the next house to keep the fun going.
4. Let’s fill the neighborhood with laughter and support for the Pantry all through the month of October!

FAIRWAYS PANTRY FOOD
Dear Fairways Community, We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible support you showed at our fundraiser today. From the early morning breakfast to the busy lunch, your participation was nothing short of amazing.
Thanks to your generosity, we sold an incredible 104 brisket sandwiches, 60 hotdogs, 45 pounds of potato salad, 20 pounds of macaroni and cheese, 15 pounds of coleslaw, and three trays of sweet pea pasta salad. While we faced a few challenges with the power in the beginning, we pushed through, and your patience made all the difference.

It was inspiring to watch this community come together to help those in need. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended, volunteered, or donated money, your efforts have made a significant impact. To those who missed out due to our sell-out, we apologize, but we hope this is a sign of the continued support we’ll receive in the future.
This event was truly a reminder of how strong and caring our community is. We are blessed to be a part of it, and we are grateful to each and every one of you for standing up for others.
And a special thank you for your support to our little guy Cash.
With heartfelt thanks, Shelly, Sandy, Karen, Kim, Annette Teresa, Colleen, Jo Lynn and our men.

Rocking & Rolling with the Rock & Roll Club
By Mike Scanlon, President
Rock n Roll Club for the third quarter is still growing, membership is now over 215, our goal for 2024 was 180. The attendance goal was an average of 125 per dance, the last quarter we have slipped to only 110, possibly due to the stormy weather and the snowbirds being away
For those residents new to Fairways, the Club has been operating under the same guidelines of a dance once a month with a live band and we do not serve food or drinks. The Club has been around for over 40 years and the last price increase was in the 90’s, going to the current cost for a member’s ticket to $5. Annual Membership hasn’t gone up either, it is still $5.
There is no other club here at Fairways that offers entertainment of this quality, at this LOW PRICE! We continue to look for new bands to add to the rotation, we have added 3 new bands this year alone.
Looking to the Fall; October will be our annual Halloween Costume Dance with prizes for dressing up in a Halloween Costume. Also, in October we close the membership campaign for 2024 and will reopen the membership drive at the December Dance for 2025. The November Dance, we will have the Rock n Roll Clubs Annual Charity Christmas Toy Drive; we will start collecting Toys, Cash/Gift Cards from Oct. 1st through to the day of the Dance
on Saturday Nov.16th. Look for the AD’s in the Eagle Newspaper, on the TV(media) and on Facebook. Last year we collected over 350 Toys and over $700. in Cash and Gift Cards; our goal will be to double that amount to 700 Toys and $1500. in Cash and Gift Cards. We have two Charities: to the west we have the United Methodist Church, Dean Rd. and the other, to the east is the Bithlo Community Center Both of these Charities work with local children and families in need during the Holiday Season, so even if you are not a Rock n Roll Member and don’t participate in our clubs’ dances, we encourage you to Help the Children of East Orlando and donate a Toy or Cash or Gift Card to this worthy cause.
December is always the surprise Dance of the year with more prizes and gifts for the 2024 members of the Rock n Roll Club.
We will continue to work to bring Great Bands, in a fun atmosphere for the residents of the Fairways Country Club to be entertained.
If You’re not a Rock n Roll Club Member; We strongly encourage YOU to JOIN, so You too can Enjoy the FUN your neighbors are having every month! Even if you don’t dance, you can sit and listen to the Live Band and Enjoy! We are always open to suggestions; contact Mike Scanlon, president at mscan6121@ gmail.com

Fall has arrived which means it’s time to “fall” in love with Jesus. The ladies at the Fairways Christian Women’s Connection can help you learn more about Him at our two Bible study sessions. Our evening session this month is on Thursday, October 17th, at 6:30 at the Greenbrier. We are continuing our study of the book of James. Our afternoon study will be on the 10th and 24th at Jo Lynn Haussmann’s home at 2 pm. Her address is 14721 Firestone. Join Jo Lynn in a great afternoon of fellowship and listen to Dr. David Jeremiah as he teaches on different topics.
Get connected with these wonderful women. Come out with the ladies to enjoy dining out and going to the movies.
We continue to support the Samaritan Resource Center with different donations each month. When you are doing your grocery shopping, try to pick up some individually packaged snacks. Each day the center serves approximately 80 people, so packaged snacks can easily be distributed to the homeless.

“Fall” in Love With Jesus Sewing Group Update FWGA Plans for Fight for the Cure of Breast Cancer Golf Tournament
By Susan Creighton
We want to thank our community and friends for all the donations of sewing machines and the sewing items that we use. During September we were busy preparing for the Craft Show. Hope you came by to say hi and looked over all the items we had for sale, and bought something too!
We donated the following items to the Thrive Women’s Healthcare Clinic: 8 blankets, 8 bibs, 9 burp clothes, 2 changing pads, 1 floor activity mat for a baby and a table booster seat for an infant.
We would like to welcome a new member of our sewing group, Nancy Lang. It would be wonderful to share our work with more ladies of the Fairways. We are always looking for women to help with sewing, cutting, pressing, and sorting through our many items. There are so many different tasks that need to be attended to.
Come check us out at the Greenbrier on Wednesdays from 8:30 to 11:00. We break for coffee and snack at 10:00. You can call Donna Dale at 561-818-1354 or Sue Creighton at 321-663-2371.

Don’t Just Sit There, Do Something!
By Geri Ossana
Frequently sitting for long periods is associated with a greater risk of cardiovascular disease. National Academy of Sciences researchers found that if you are sitting for long periods and engaged in a passive activity, such as watching television, your risk of dementia increases! However, if you are doing something that is engaging your brain, such as working on a computer, or a hobby that requires focus and problem-solving, you may actually lower your risk.
Do get up and move throughout the day and be sure to take breaks from whatever you’re doing when seated, so that you are stimulating your brain. Try to swap some TV time for an activity like catching up on emails or working on your memoirs. Even playing a challenging online game is better than sitting back and watching TV. Take breaks from whatever you are doing. Walk around, stretch, and engage your brain. Read a novel populated with many characters and locations that is more than just getting literary escapism. You’re getting a memoryboosting workout, too. A complex plot boosts brain activity associated with memory! As many people get older, they stop reading fiction because it becomes more difficult to keep up with dozens of character and plot twists. Keep notes if you need to. Your memory is likely to appreciate delving into another world. Studies found that those who read fiction even for a little while every day will help stimulate their memory and boost brain activity. Remember, Fairways has a wonderful library at the Greenbrier where you are free to borrow books and puzzles at any time!
