CATHY NANFELDT FHAOI PRESIDENT
It truly seems hard to believe we are already in November. I know we all would agree that each year seems to pass by more quickly than the last.
I’d first like to take a moment to once again thank everyone for your support this past year. We’ve had a few bumps along the road, but I appreciate the kind words many of you have shared with me.
At the October Board Meeting, we had three members running for re-election and only one additional candidate came forward. With that, a formal election process was not necessary and the four were approved by acclamation to form the 2026 FHAOI Board. They have since met and voted on positions and they are as follows: Vicki Heath, President; Connie Fasano, Vice-President; Renay Johnson, Treasurer; Nancy Lang, Secretary; Melanie Klements, Social Director; Dixie LoCicero, Communications Director; and Tom David, Director at Large. These positions will become effective January 1, 2026. I will provide Vicki with everything she needs to execute the board activities for a seamless transition. Please join me in congratulating Vicki and thank her for stepping in to the role of President. I know she will do an excellent job.
The annual FHAOI Craft Fair turned out to be a successful event. In hindsight foot traffic could have been higher and we will be sure to provide more outside advertising for next year’s fair.

Thanks to everyone who participated as well as all those who stopped by and purchased items from the vendors.
Next up is the FHAOI’s 4th Annual Golf Tournament & Gala on Saturday, November 8.
The committee has been hard at work to hold another memorable tournament, and we are most hopeful for great weather and a lot of fun.
Watch the slides on Facebook or the TVs for information about upcoming ticket sales for both the FHAOI Christmas Dinner Dance and New Year’s Dance. Tickets are on sale now. They will be $25 per ticket for both dances – the same price as last year despite increased costs. Tables will be sold on a first-come-first-serve basis, but you must have all ten names when you pay for the table – and no holds. Thank you for understanding.

We also have a Board Meeting on Thursday, November 13 at 7 pm. We hope to see a good turnout, and we will try to answer all your questions.
In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out and I will do my best to get an answer for you. Wishing a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving to all of you.

FWGA Updates
The Snowbirds are back as their weather is getting colder and our weather is starting to cool down. Welcome back!
Our membership is dwindling, and we’re looking for new golfers. The Fairways Women’s Golf Association is the only sanctioned league left in Fairways. We play by USGA rules with a few local rules. We play both 9 and 18 holes and play both red and gold tees. We hold monthly meetings from January to May, taking a break for the summer and resuming in September. This is the first Tuesday of the month and is a scramble. Lunch and share the wealth are offered at the meeting. You’re also welcome play as a guest to test the waters!
Dates for the 2026 season were discussed and approved. Our President Diane Armstrong will submit them for approval by Hometown. Once approved the dates will be posted. Membership determines the ability for the FWGA to sponsor these functions.
The Christmas Party will be held on December 2, 2025. Hope to see everyone there.
As always hit them long and straight and have fun.
Respectfully submitted
Lynne Blair and Susan Edwards

FHAOI Treasurer’s Report

I
know you’ll be pleased that the firepit rebuild at the Masters is complete and it is now operational! Welcome news now that the weather is getting cooler.”
PRISCILLA HERRICK HTA MANAGER
Happy Thanksgiving, Fairways Residents! From Your HTA Social Director
As we head into the Holiday Season, I want to take a moment to reflect on what I’m thankful for. I’m thankful for my family, for our wonderful community, and for each and every one of you who make Fairways such a special place to live.
I’m also deeply grateful to all those who keep us safe and free, your service and sacrifice do not go unnoticed.
Wishing you all a warm, joyful, and peaceful Thanksgiving!
With gratitude.
Nashville Came to Fairways - On October 6th. Hometown America hosted a lively Night Of Country Music at Fairways. Our favorite performer, Kip Sweeney, delivered an outstanding show that had residents dancing in their cowboy boots and hats all night long. A heartfelt thank you to Barbara Mishloney, John Cutsinger and all the dedicated volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this event such a success.

As we honor our veterans on November 11th, please join me in extending our heartfelt gratitude to all who have served - both past and present. Your courage, sacrifice, and dedication have safeguarded our freedoms, and for that, we are forever thankful. Let us take a moment to reflect, appreciate, and celebrate the brave individuals who have given so much to our country. Thank you, Veterans.
Veterans Day Salute - We are proud to honor our Veterans once again on November 11th. Join us for a special Veterans Day Luncheon in the Masters. If you are a Veteran, we warmly invite you to attend and allow us to express our gratitude for your service. Thank you for your courage and dedication.
Improvements – I am sure you will be happy to hear that the Masters firepit is once again operational. In addition to rebuilding the fire pit, we had to order a cover that would be easy enough for residents to remove and replace. If you plan to use the firepit, please take note of the sign above the turn on switch. PLEASE REMOVE CLOTH COVER BEFORE LIGHTING THE FIRE PIT- PLEASE REPLACE CLOTH COVER AFTER USE. It is imperative that we take off the cover to prevent it catching on fire or prevent resident injury. Please replace cloth cover after use to prevent damage to the fire pit from the rain. Thank you for your cooperation as we work to improve our wonderful amenities.
*Thank You to Our Residents for your beautiful yards We want to extend a sincere thank you to all the residents who continue to beautify our community with flowers and wellmaintained yards. Your care and pride in your homes make Fairways shine brighter every day. Thank you for making our community such a special place to live!
With appreciation, Gary and Becky Bangert

The vaccination event we held on October 17 was a success and we appreciate Walgreens coming in to Fairways to administer the vaccines. One resident did add a little ‘drama’ to the process!

Barb and Johnny organized the ‘Boo’ program again this year where selected residents were given a ‘Boo’ basket. Those who received a Boo Basket then made at least two Boo Baskets two leave them at a neighbor’s front door so as many residents as possible were ‘booed.’ Hometown America will recognize and honor veterans with a luncheon and a brief program on Veterans Day, November 11. Seating will begin at 11:30am with lunch being served at noon.

“This is always a good day focused on Fairways veterans. It’s a wonderful way to express our gratitude for immeasurable service to our country,” Social Director, Barbara Mishloney said.
On Saturday, November 15 from 9am-1pm Hometown America will host its annual Health Fair for residents to learn the latest and greatest about health care. Specialists will be available to answer all your questions. For more information, please call Judy Smegelski at 407-282-2826.
All residents are invited to decorate the community holiday tree on Sunday, November 30 at 2pm. “Everyone is encouraged to bring an ornament to share to make the tree more personal,” Social Director, Johnny Cutsinger, said.
Tickets are available for the Friday, December 5, Holiday Luncheon at the Masters. Seating will begin art 11:30 am with luncheon being served at noon.
“We will be providing complimentary tickets on Mondays, November 3,10 and 24 at 5-6:30pm at the Masters,” Barb said. “We will also distribute on Monday, November 17 at 2pm at the Masters.”
“For the first time, we will be having Mark Z. from the Chrome 57 Band for a mini concert at the Masters,” Johnny said. “We will start at the triangle at 6 p.m. and drive to the Masters.”
Everyone is encouraged to line Pebble Beach or sit in front of the Masters where Mark will perform Christmas music from 6 to 8 p.m. Hot cider and cookies will be served.

What Is This Line Dancing All About?
by Adam Sheblein
Line Dancing is a group dance where both women and men perform the same sequence of steps in lines or rows without needing a partner. Dancers move in unison to country western, rock, pop or hip-hop music with a specific set of steps for each song. It originated from various folk dances and became a popular social dance known for its beginner-friendly and inclusive nature. There are proven benefits that dancing/line dancing enhances physical health by improving balance and coordination and general fitness. Plus, it can help with mental health by reducing anxiety symptoms and socially it helps with community engagement and friendships. It is low impact, promotes overall fitness and helps bone density and provides a sense of accomplishment and community that boosts mood and confidence.
The top three dances included every week are: The Electric Slide,

Boot Scooting Boogie and The Cupid Shuffle.
These sessions are every Tuesday at 4pm at The Masters Clubhouse, they’re free and fun. Your body will thank you as you join in the dances. Our other instructors are Libby Williams, Letizia Morales, Frenchy Croteau and Cathy Scheblein.

Craft Fair Round-Up!
Thank you to all the vendors who participated in the Craft Fair! An amazing selection of items for sale and so much talent on display. And a big thank you to all those who donated sweet deliciousness for the Sweet Shop. We had an amazing selection and sales were brisk. There will be a Craft Fair planned for 2026 and please share your ideas and comments to help us make it an even greater success next year.

Five Years of Gratitude and Giving
As we enter the fifth year of our Fairways Food Pantry, we find ourselves reflecting on just how incredible this community truly is. Time and time again, our residents have stepped up giving, volunteering, and supporting one another in ways that make this neighborhood so special.
From donations to the Golf Ball Program at Sandy and James’s on the 7th tee, to our “You’ve Been Booed” and “Elf Your Yard” programs, and of course, our famous brisket sandwich driveway fundraisers, every effort has helped keep our pantry thriving and our neighbors cared for.
Sandy and I want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has contributed over the years whether by volunteering countless hours, making donations, or simply spreading the word. You’ve helped make five years of giving possible.
A special thank you goes out to Elizabeth Perdue and Kim Hysong, who have spent many nights quietly sneaking around yards to keep the spirit (and the signs!) moving during our holiday programs. If you’d like to help or donate to support the pantry’s next chapter, please see Sandy or me. Together, we’ll continue making a difference one meal, one act of kindness, and one neighbor at a time.
With sincere gratitude, Shelly Mottram & Sandy Dennis Fairways Food Pantry

Fairways Community Spreads Holiday Cheer
by Shelly Mottram

October was full of fun here in the Fairways as neighbors enjoyed the return of our beloved “Boo” program. From one yard to the next, the ghostly sign made its way through the community, bringing plenty of laughter, surprise, and joy along the way. Thanks to your generosity, the Boo program raised funds to support our community food pantry just a little longer. We are so grateful to everyone who joined in the fun, whether by moving the sign, leaving a donation, or simply enjoying the spirit of the season.

As we turn the corner into the holidays, get ready because the “Elf” will soon be making its rounds in December! Keep your eyes open for some festive fun as the little mischief maker lands in a yard near you. The Boo and Elf programs remind us that this time of year is about more than decorations and festivities, it’s about neighbors helping neighbors. Each smile, each small gift, and each act of kindness goes a long way in supporting one another.
That’s the kind of holiday spirit that makes the Fairways such a special place to call home. Thank you!

Veterans Corner
by Edwin Ramirez, Commander, Fairways Veteran Group
Veterans Day
During the month of November we take time to honor the veterans that have served this wonderful nation. Veterans Day commemorates the service of all U.S. veterans. Here in Fairways on Veterans Day we want to thank all veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated. It also emphasizes the fact that all those who served, not only those who died – have sacrificed and done their duty. We Honor you all.
Honoring Our Veterans
We try to bring the veterans and residents together with many activities and events to the Fairways community. On Friday November 14th starting at 10:00am there will be a Brick Laying Ceremony at the Fairways Veterans memorial. Many Fairways residents have purchased bricks to honor their loved ones. Following that ceremony, we will gather inside the Masters Clubhouse at 11:00am. There will be Quilts of valor (QOV) representative coordinating with the Fairways Veterans Group to present Quilts to various Fairways veterans. QOV is a non-profit organization that facilitates the opportunity for veterans throughout the nation to receive quilts. We are honored to be able to extend this opportunity to our veterans.

Commanders Thoughts

his month the ladies of the FCWC want to invite you to our afternoon and evening Bible studies. The daytime study meets at Jo Lynn Haussmann’s home on November 13th at 2 pm. Her address is 14721 Firestone. Our evening study meets at the Greenbrier at 6:30 pm on November 6th and 20th. We’re working our way through Galatians this fall. Our outreach partner is the Samaritan Resource Center. They minister to many of the needs of the homeless in our area. This month we are collecting bottled water and sleeping bags/blankets. Can you imagine sleeping outside when the temperature drops into the 40s and 50s? Sleeping bags and blankets are most appreciated.
If you have any questions, please email Jane Slotnick at jaslotnick5@gmail.com or text Joy Ruggiero at 614-743-4402.
We want to express our deepest gratitude to everyone in the Fairways Country Club community. Between ticket sales for the Breast Cancer Awareness Dance, raffles sales for the beautiful baskets at the dance (which were all donated) and various other donations, we were able to give a wonderful donation to the Libby’s Legacy Breast Cancer Foundation We also want to thank all the volunteers that helped make this event as successful as it was.
As you might already know, the Libby’s Legacy Breast Cancer Foundation has brought the Mammogram Bus to the Fairways every year. Many women were diagnosed early and were able to get treated on time. We are currently trying to coordinate having the Mammogram Bus return to Fairways sometime February of 2026. Again Thanks.

BINGO
+ Pass the Pig + Libby’s Legacy = Fun for a Great Cause!

by Shelli-Mottram
Every Wednesday evening in October leading up to the Libby’s Golf tournament, laughter, excitement, and friendly competition fill the Masters as our Fairways BINGO group gathers for a good time and a good cause.
Thanks go out to Karen, Mark, Cathy, and all our BINGO payers to a beautiful tradition that continues each week. As players break between games donations are collected and placed into the community’s “piggy bank” for Libby’s Legacy, a long-standing effort in honor of a beloved former resident. All while Karen and on some occasions Mark jumps in, in costume to work the floor.
What began as a simple way to give back has grown into a heartfelt tradition that shows the true spirit of our neighborhood. Karen’s dedication to do this for Lynne Blair to keep her friend’s memory alive, along with the generosity of our players, reminds us that community is built on kindness, friendship, and shared purpose. Karen, Mark, Cathy, and everyone who made Wednesday nights so special, thank you for continuing to show what Fairways is.
FAIRWAYS COMMUNITY Health FAIR
November 15 at the Masters 9am-1:30pm
Exhibitors will include medical centers, insurance representatives and much more! Be sure to come and check it out!

The 2025 Yard Sale is in the Bag!
Bonnie Johnson has organized and led the yard sale effort for 14 years! And this year it once again ran smoothly with the help of many volunteers.
“I hope a lot of people sold stuff and made money,” Bonnie told us. “I have so many people to thank for their help. Like they say, it takes a village.’
“First of all, many, many thanks Vivian Scott, my copilot and right-hand woman! She was there every step of the way and did phenomenal work. “Lisbeth Echeandia helped organize and sort the lists and was a lot of help! I appreciate it. Lois Fleming printed the 300 listings/maps for us, did a great job and many thanks to her. And the food at the fundraiser she held at her home for her grandson’s baseball team was delicious! Maryann and Ron Wilson were a great help with picking up the signs when the sale was over and just being a great support team.
“After 14 years, I am retiring from organizing the annual yard sale. It’s been a great experience and I will be happy to share my knowledge with anyone who wants to take on this challenge! Thank you to everyone who has been such amazing help throughout the years. And many thanks again to everyone who stepped up and helped this year. It was much appreciated.”

If You See Something, Say Something

Reports of suspicious activity in Fairways have increased recently and it is imperative that if you see something suspicious, you should report it. We all play a role in helping keep our family, neighbors and our community safe. The Sheriff’s Department can only respond to something that has been reported to them.
Fairways is in OCS Sector II which encompasses all East Orange County for a total of 408 square miles and has over 400,000 permanent residents.
Sector II has a diverse population and a variety of businesses and educational institutions. It is home to the University of Central Florida’s main campus, which is the second largest university in the country. Also, located in East Orange County are Valencia College and Full Sail University.
The Alafaya Trail corridor is the busiest area for Sector II. It encompasses numerous residential communities with Avalon Park being the largest sitting on roughly 1,860 acres and containing 3,400 houses. Additionally, it has 500,000 square feet of thriving commercial space. Nearby is the Waterford Lakes shopping area that contains almost 1 million square feet of retail space.
All these communities are supported by 25 elementary schools, 6 middle schools, and 5 high schools along with 26 county parks. Then to the very east side of Sector II is 21 miles of the St. Johns River and 30,701 acres of wildlife preserves, making East Orange County a very diverse area.
Orange County Sheriff non-emergency number: 407-836-4357
And you can call Sector II directly at 407-254-4800 to request patrols, report suspicious activity, or let them know if you’re going away and want your house checked.
