CRAFT FAIR & SWEET SHOP
Brisk Sales and Great Attendance!

By Lois Fleming
First, a big thank you to all the volunteers and helpers who made the event happen!
Those who helped with the setup, the golf cart transportation crews, the kitchen staff, the Sweet Shop volunteers, and those who donated the delicious cakes, cookies and brownies plus the FHAOI Board whose members pitched in wherever needed. And thank you to Golf & Electric Vehicles for loaning us a four-seater golf cart to help with our transportation needs.
The event was a rousing success! Vendors were pleased with the sales and the attendance from outside Fairways was strong. The range of items available and the creativity showcased was just amazing and it was great to see so much talent on display with a good, early opportunity to shop for the Holidays!
Many positive comments on how the Sweet Shop was set up definitely showed brisk sales. All that was left – well before the end of the Craft Fair - were crumbs! The delicious offerings were much appreciated by the attendees and the FHAOI benefited from the sales.

We did have surveys available to find out how attendees rated the event. Overall, we received primarily four- and five-star reviews. Some suggestions for improvement/changes included:
• Move the date later so it’s closer to the Holiday Season and all the snowbirds will be back.
• Increase the advertising where possible. (As you know, we did create events on Facebook and NextDoor and geared them to a large geographic area and the suggestions were to do even more!). Contact Channel 13 as they have a community events listing and highlight what’s happening locally.
• Recommend to all vendors that they share the event on their personal, and on their business social media accounts if they have them.
• Have signage out on Colonial Drive and flyers put up in any local businesses in the area that would allow them.
Keep an eye out for details for the April 5th Spring Fling Craft Fair for 2025. And stay tuned for the fall fair dates to be announced. Always worthwhile to build on success.

Our hearts go out to those in the community impacted by the hurricane. Let me also give a big shout-out to Priscilla and the HTA team for all they did to get us ready for Milton and the clean-up afterwards.
MARK KORNMANN FHAOI PRESIDENT

Well, as I write this column, we are cleaning up from Hurricane Milton. Our hearts go out to those in the community impacted by the hurricane. Let me also give a big shout-out to Priscilla and the HTA team for all they did to get us ready for Milton and the clean-up afterwards. The notices they sent out were clear and very helpful and the rest of the team buttoned up Fairways in advance of the hurricane and cleaned up afterwards. Great to see such a team effort on our behalf. THANK YOU!! Milton also wreaked havoc on Bingo and the FHAOI Annual Meeting and Elections. The meeting was moved from October 10 to October 19. At the rescheduled October 19 Annual Meeting and Elections, the Board accepted Lois Fleming’s resignation, effective November 1. It then appointed Connie Fasano as Acting Vice President for the remainder of 2024. The Board also appointed Vicki Heath to fill the Director at Large position for the rest of 2024 and to finish out Lois’ one year term in 2025. Announcement of the new Board and positions for 2025 is on the cover of this issue. Congratulations to all.
A Note from the President Annual Volunteer Brunch
The FHAOI gathered Sunday, October 20 with 75 Fairways residents who have helped make a difference in the lives of this community. This year we focused on building community, and we came together to reflect on the progress and celebrate each other.
The volunteers were treated to a brunch that consisted of eggs, bacon, sausage, cheese hashbrowns, croissants and fruit along with mimosas and coffee. The FHAOI board served our guests of honor.
Mark Kornmann, FHAOI President, with microphone in hand, walked the room and shared the many stories of the volunteers and how they have made a difference in Fairways. It was quite humbling being surrounded by so many residents who selflessly have given of their time and talents, week after week. They delivered the Eagle, they work Bingo every Wednesday, they volunteer at social events, they helped build the Golf Gazebo, they work the Golf Tournament and Gala—and not to forget, they serve on the FHAOI Board. Mark shared how he and the Board appreciated all the work of these people.
Each of the Volunteers received a Volunteer Ornament for their Christmas Trees. Next it was time to present the award to the “2024 Volunteer of the Year.” Mark spoke to the difficulty of narrowing 150 people to one, but he also mentioned that this year’s winner has given consistently to not only the FHAOI, but the entire community. He asked Karen and Tim Barber, last year’s Volunteers to come forward to present the winner with their gift card to Cooper’s Hawk. Mark then announced the 2024 winner-Shelly Mottram.
Shelly thanked everyone who helped her out—especially her husband Curt Mottram! Thank you Shelly for being a great volunteer and making many lives in Fairways better!!!
What you will see in this edition of the Eagle, is a complete run-down of the 3rd Annual FHAOI/Palm Medical Fall Ball Golf Tournament and Gala. On November 9, we celebrate our Fairways golfers and community guests. Thanks to Palm Medical for being the lead sponsor for the third year running. I want to thank everyone who is on the Golf Committee. You all have done an incredible job and please know that the work you have done helps the FHAOI and all the residents of Fairways. Looking ahead, don’t forget to purchase your tickets for the Christmas Dinner/Dance and the New Year’s Dance. Tickets will be sold every Wednesday night before Bingo and the cost is $20 per person. Get your tickets—we want to see everyone there celebrating! If you need assistance in purchasing tickets, please email me at markakornmann@gmail.com.
I want to close this column for November with a special Thanksgiving wish for all of you. We live in such a divided country — let us all take time this month to be thankful for the many blessings we have been given, be thankful for our friends and family who have supported us over the years and be thankful for the many volunteers who make Fairways a great place to live!! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

Happy Thanksgiving
This year I am thankful for a great year filled with love, joy and fellowship. I am thankful for our residents, thankful for my great staff and thankful for my family and friends. I enjoyed many heartfelt moments this year in service to our community and to those less fortunate.
We made it through another hurricane season but this time, not without damage. My heart goes out to those residents whose home suffered damage, some significant damage. I want to thank all the volunteers that helped their neighbors. I especially want to thank my Hometown team. They were on site before the storm had completely left the state. We arranged to cut up downed trees immediately and the team worked tirelessly clearing drains, removing debris in the road and assessing the buildings so we could open them up as soon as possible. I want to thank my team for driving the community and checking on any resident who stayed during the storm. It truly takes a village, and Fairways is a great village. If you know a resident who suffered home damage and needs help, please reach out to us and we will see if we can get them the help they need. Again, my deepest THANKS!
Hometown America Courtesy Van Schedule for November
The van will leave promptly at 10:30 am from the Masters with an expected return around 12:30 pm. Shopping residents must be able to get in and out of the van, with some assistance. You must make reservations in advance to be sure there is space on the van. Text Johnny Cutsinger at 407-680-8249 or email cutsinj@aol.com for reservations.

Veterans Day is November 11 and once again Hometown is excited to honor our Veterans. We have a wonderful Veterans Day luncheon planned for November 11 at 11:30 am. Please call Barbara Mishloney for more information and for tickets if they are still available.
October was a busy month with Hometown events. First, we had a great dance on October 3 with KC and the Sunshine tribute band. The dance floor was full on the very first song and the dancing continued all night. That band has so much energy and great music, it is hard not to bust a move….
Hometown followed it up with more fun on October 28 with Casino Night. This event is a favorite of our residents, and we love to have it every year. We had blackjack tables, roulette, craps and poker. Were you one of the big winners?
THANK YOU - Thank you to those residents who are out working around their homes freshening up landscape and planting flowers. It looks beautiful. My personal thanks to:

Lucy
Lucy is loved by Suzanne. She is a Pomsky – a Pomeranian and Husky mix – is full-grown and weighs 13 lbs. She has a double coat – the husky part – so definitely sheds and needs a lot of brushing! Lucy has one blue eye and one brown eye, and a pink stripe on her nose.
“Lucy is a true gift in my life. When my last dog passed, I swore I wouldn’t get another dog. One day in my water aerobics class, a friend was talking about how difficult it was to care for her two dogs. One thing led to another, and Lucy came home with me. My friend Leslie wanted the dog to remain close because she loves her and just couldn’t give her the attention she deserved.
“I am so grateful to Leslie for giving me the beautiful Lucy. Lucy loves other dogs, people, and mostly she loves to watch the squirrels. She is such a cuddle buddy, and I especially love that about her.”
Brody

Brody is loved by Renay and Brad and has been a member of the family for the last eighteen months. He is a Shih-Poo –a shih tzu and poodle mix.
“Brody is such a fun dog! He’s just 13 pounds, with lots of energy and is so affectionate. He’s a real snuggle buddy. He’s pretty well full grown, so likely won’t get much bigger.
“He’s super friendly with everyone he meets and he and our cat Taz wrestle and play, which is always fun to watch. He especially loves riding around Fairways in a golf cart and wants to say hello to everyone he sees. I do have to admit that he’s very spoiled and loves attention.”

Zeke
Zeke – a beagle - is estimated to be about three years old and is loved by Nick.
“I found Zeke when I was walking in a state park in Texas a year ago. He was all alone and full of ticks! He had no ID and no chip and we could not find his owner. I was without a four-legged best friend at the time and was waiting for the perfect companion to come along. And I found the right one in Zeke!
“He loves to walk for miles, enjoys his daily massages and sleeping on his back. And just like me, he never meets a stranger. And we both love watching classic films, so that’s fun!”

EAGLE • NOVEMBER 2024
Latin America Club
By Giselle Lafontaine

November is a month that continues the autumnal transition, bringing us closer to the end of the year. As we are preparing for our family time and celebrations, let’s pray that there are no more weather challenges for us. Sending prayers out to all of those who have suffered loss and damages. We at the Latin American Club would like to thank all the members, neighbors and friends who joined us at our yearly Hispanic Heritage Dance held on Saturday, October 5. It was a successful evening thanks to your continued support. It was full of great fun, food and dancing. Here are just a few pics of this wonderful event.
Our next big event is already in the works and is being planned for January 2025, which will be the Three Kings Day Celebration. More details to follow in the coming months.
Unfortunately, the general members meeting on September 26 was cancelled. Our general meetings are open to all Fairways residents and are held on the fourth Thursday of the month at 6:00 pm at the Masters. Due to this month’s general meeting landing on Thanksgiving Day, 11/28, our general meeting has been moved one week earlier to Thursday, 11/21. We look forward to seeing you there.
You can reach the club at our newly revamped Facebook page at Latin American Club at Fairways (LACF) or by email at latinamericanclub2024@ gmail.com. The club President Gladys Carpena can also be contacted directly at either 201-710-0753 or 407-456-3091.

This October, Fairways residents embraced the spirit of Halloween while supporting a great cause: the community food pantry. Through the “Boo Program,” a festive “boo” sign mysteriously made its way from yard to yard, raising both smiles and donations along the way. This playful initiative, which encouraged residents to “boo” their neighbors’ yards for a small contribution, collected over $500 to support food pantry needs.
Each night, community members Kim and Larry HySong took on the thrilling role of “boo movers,” sneaking through yards to reposition the sign under the cover of darkness. Their dedication kept the spirit alive as residents awoke to discover who had been “booed” next, fueling excitement and community-wide participation.
The success of the “Boo Program” is just the beginning, as the Fairways community now looks forward to another joyful initiative in December: “Elf Your Yard.” This holiday-themed event will follow a similar pattern, with an “elf” sign spreading holiday cheer and supporting the food pantry during the season of giving.
Thank you to everyone who took part in this spirited campaign, especially Kim and Larry HySong, for adding a touch of mystery and fun each night.
—Shelly and Sandy

In this month of Thanksgiving, let us remember to be thankful for all the Lord’s blessings. His gifts are ones that should be treasured and shared with others.
The FCWC has four events this month. Join us for two Bible study sessions on Thursday, November 7 and 21. We’ll be finishing the Book of James. Meet at the Greenbrier at 6:30 pm.

The ladies are also going out to lunch at Salsas Cocina Mexicana on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at noon. It’s Taco Tuesday! The address of the restaurant is 45 W. Mitchell Hammock Road, #1381. We will meet at the Masters at 11:30 am for carpooling.
If you’ve never seen the “Left Behind” movie, now’s your chance. Experience the author’s perspective on what the book of Revelation reveals to us about the end times. It will be shown on Thursday, November 14 at 6 pm at the Greenbrier. Get your popcorn and drinks ready because it’s BYOB! Also, think about bringing a case of bottled water or individually packaged snacks for our outreach partner, Samaritan Resource Center.

Singles Club Update
By Suzanne Hammons
The Singles Club had a great time at Perkins and Johnny’s Diner in October. We are so thankful for the opportunity to gather and socialize with each other. It’s one of the reasons we love our community of Fairways.
We’ve decided to try a new restaurant in November. On November 3 at 4:00 pm, we will have dinner at Casa Mexico located at 9728 Colonial. Looks like it will be a fun place to eat. Please let Suzanne Hammons know by Saturday afternoon if you will be attending so she can make reservations. You call her at 407-616-5006.
For the brunch on Thursday November 21, we will be going to Sally’s Diner located at 10376 E. Colonial Drive. Don’t forget, brunch starts at 10:00 am.
The Singles Club also has games every Saturday night at the Greenbrier starting at 6 pm. Bring your nickels and quarters and see if you can beat our resident card sharks!

Veterans Corner
By Edwin Ramirez, Commander, Fairways Veteran Group
In November we take time to honor the veterans who have served this wonderful nation. Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service and to acknowledge their contributions to our national security are appreciated. It also emphasizes that all those who served, not only those who died – have sacrificed and done their duty.
We try to bring the veterans and residents together with many activities and events to the Fairways community. On Friday November 15 at 6:00 pm, a representative from the Central Florida Quilt of Valor will be at the Masters. They are a national organization that honors veterans and active service members who served in one of the following branches: Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Members of the activated National Guard and activated or active duty-special work (ADSW) reservists are included.
Due to Hurricane Milton we had to cancel the October 8 presentation by The Honor Flight Central Florida representative. We have been in contact with them, and we plan on having them hopefully prior to the end of the year.
During the Annual Enrollment Period in the month of November we will be bringing in representatives from both Tricare for Life and the Veterans Administration. We invite all veterans and spouses to attend. They will be offering a presentation and detailed brochures.
During the month of November, we will also be celebrating Thanksgiving. On Sunday November 24 we will be having the Third Annual Pre-Thanksgiving Potluck. All residents are invited, and we will be putting out more information.
Supporting Our Veterans: Ongoing, we still have the Helping Homeless Veterans Drive, Bricks Honoring our veterans and the Flag Replacement Program. We truly appreciate everyone’s support. If anyone is interested in obtaining information, please feel free to contact us. 407-913-3681.
Annual Elections: On Tuesday November 12, during the general meeting at 6:30 pm at the Masters. All positions within the Board will be available to be voted on. In addition, we will be voting on a Crest / Logo to represent the Fairways Veterans Group.
More information for all of November’s events will be posted on Facebook, Nextdoor and the TV Monitors by the Mailboxes.
Military Calendar – Holidays, Events, Observances (November)
•Veterans Day: Celebrated on November 11, originally known as Armistice Day, honoring all American veterans from all wars.
• Marine Corps Birthday: The US Marine Corps celebrates its birthday on November 10, 1775.
• November 23, 1942: Establishment of the US Coast Guard Women’s Reserve (SPARs). Commanders Thoughts:
We want to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who attended the Breast Cancer Awareness Dance on Friday, October 18 or gave contributions. It was a fabulous night of music and dance. As know, the Libby’s Legacy Breast Cancer Foundation has brought the Mammogram Bus to the Fairways every year. Many women were diagnosed early and were able to get treated in time. This year we were able to write a check to the Foundation in the amount of $1,331.00 and could not have done it without the great community here in Fairways. Again, thank you!

Letter to the Editor
Sadly, our neighbor John Colbert passed away on September 16, 2024. He was a great friend to us. We formed a wonderful relationship, and we had a bond with both him and his wife Liana. John had a very amazing personality and a great sense of humor. We enjoyed many wonderful moments and conversations. He proudly served the in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. We want to express our deepest condolences to his wife Liana, his children and his family. We are very saddened, and he will be dearly missed.
—Your Neighbors, Javier y Gladys

Online Shopping Tips for the Holidays!
Unfortunately, the ease and convenience of online shopping make the holiday season a perfect time for cybercriminals to take advantage of unsuspecting online shoppers. Some hints below to help keep you and your money safe!
And in addition to being careful online, remember that there could be ‘porch pirates’ in our community during the holiday shopping season. Be aware when packages are due to be delivered so that you’ll know right away if one has been misdelivered or is missing. Some hints:
1. Shop reliable websites and get there safely. If an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is! Use the sites of retailers you know and trust and get to their sites by directly typing a known, trusted URL into the address bar instead of clicking on a link.
2. Beware of seasonal scams. Fake package tracking emails, fake e-cards, fake charity donation scams, and emails requesting that you confirm purchase information are particularly common during this time of year.
3. Conduct research. When considering a new website or online company for your holiday purchases, read reviews. Also, verify that the website has a legitimate mailing address and a phone number for sales or support-related questions. If the site looks suspicious, call and speak to a human.
4. Always think twice before clicking on links or opening attachments - even if they appear to be from people you know, legitimate organizations, your favorite retailers, or even your bank.
5. Pay with a credit card, not a debit card. Credit cards offer protections that may reduce your liability if your information is used improperly. And Check your credit card and bank statements regularly!

Gardening in Central Florida in November
While other states are experiencing nearly freezing temperatures in November, Florida provides cool, dry weather that is great for many plants.
You can take advantage of Florida’s weather by following these planting suggestions based on the Florida climate zones. In our zip code 32826 we are in zone 10a. The 10a zone has a low temperature range of 30°F to 35°F. Central Florida is at the cusp between zones because it rarely experiences a freeze.
Planting in November
Bedding Plants: Create an autumn display with cool-season plants such as ornamental cabbage, cape daisy, and snapdragon.
Bulbs: Many bulbs (such as crinum, amaryllis, and daylily) like to get their start in November’s cool weather.
Herbs: Opt for herbs that prefer cool, dry weather — cilantro, dill, parsley, thyme, and sage are good choices.
Vegetables: Continue planting arugula, broccoli, kale, beet, endive, lettuce and other cool-season crops. November is a good time to plant chrysanthemums because of the cooler weather. When choosing plants look for ones with many closed bloom buds to ensure they will last longer.
