It was a gorgeous day on Saturday, June 7 where FHAOI Social Director Melanie Klements had organized a group of residents to join at Midway Airboats to brave the alligator filled waters of the St. Johns River. So much fun was had that the group decided this won’t be the last group event. Melanie has her thinking cap on and is coming up with the next place to get a group together. Stay tuned so you won’t miss out on the fun! Thanks to everyone who was able to join for the airboat excursion. Oh, and that baby alligator has the smoothest skin!

We are planning to host a Meet & Greet with all the clubs in Fairways on Saturday, August 16 from 11 am to 2 pm at the Masters.”
Summer is upon us once more as our air conditioners run basically nonstop and the daily showers promise to drench the golfers in the afternoon.
FHAOI held our Board Meeting on June 12 with maybe 25 residents in attendance. We carry on but it would sure be nice to have a larger audience and more feedback to points of interest around the park.
During this meeting there was discussion of a survey to hand out to get a better understanding of events you may be interested in seeing in the future from the FHAOI as well as questions regarding your interest in our monthly Eagle newspaper or suggestions for feature articles you would like to read, etc. For now, the Board has chosen to table the idea for further discussion.
The Board agreed that the resident directory should be given to all residents regardless if they are included in it or not. There is not another Board meeting until August 14 where our election drive begins. I know this seems early but we have four board members who will be up for reelection, and we always hope for some new faces to consider becoming a board member. If anyone has any questions about running for the board, please contact me to discuss.
On July 19 the FHAOI is featuring a 70’s dance with DJ Scott serving up our old favorites. For more information, please read the cover article. We hope to have a good turnout.
We are planning to host a Meet & Greet with all the clubs in Fairways on Saturday, August 16 from 11 am to 2 pm at the Masters. We haven’t held this event for two years and there are several new groups in the park now. This will be your opportunity to come meet the group leaders and ask any questions you may have about joining in at some of the fun events.
It is a pleasure serving as the FHAOI President and making myself available to you when you need questions answered or just need to vent. Just give me a call and I’m happy to help wherever I can.

Meeting Date: June 5
Participants: HTA Manager Priscilla Herrick, FHAOI Board President Cathy Nanfeldt, Board Secretary Nancy Lang & Director at Large Vicki Heath.
We began the meeting thanking HTA for the purchase of the new pool lift chair for the Masters pool.
The following are highlights of items discussed at our monthly meeting:
1. There still is not a definitive start date for the Greenbrier roofing and fascia replacement project, although it should be soon according to Priscilla. She again stated that the building will need to be closed hopefully no longer than a week. A One Call will go out to the residents.
2. The air conditioning part came in for the Masters. However, it still did not correct the issue with no air coming out of the vents in the poker room to the left of the stage. It is still too warm in there. They play poker 3 x week, and something needs to be done.
3. The Masters Media System – Priscilla indicated she would have the TV up front that has not worked in many months replaced. Hopefully by the time you read this article, this will have been accomplished. However, any other media system work will not be looked in to until next year’s budget. This is frustrating with so many activities in our main hall and the disruptions with the microphones cutting in and out and the rack system working sporadically making it difficult to hear throughout the large room. The issues have been a problem for more than a year now so all I can say is I hope whenever the fix is approved and happens that it is worth it. I’m sure many of you will agree.
4. Again, with the Masters, the leaking outside the screen room on the tile is a slip hazard. Priscilla said that it is due to the way the gutter bows with the peak of the roof. They are going to attempt to use some sort of goop that will cover up those areas and decrease the leaks.
5. Christian is still working on the Google maps issue and Braeburn court.
6. We asked for an additional floor mat for the ladies’ bathroom at the Pro Shop and one was put in right away.
7. Have you noticed the directional arrows painted on the parking lot at the Masters? It is hopefully a solution for golfers to obey and not enter the exit way by the mailboxes creating a safety hazard for residents and golfers alike.
8. Vicki brought up that the RV Lot lights were not working. She provided Priscilla with a printout of the lot with the light poles and the corresponding numbers for each pole. Within a couple days the RV Lot lights were back to operational. Thanks, Vicki, for pointing that out – and thanks Priscilla for dealing with it so quickly. Those of us with RVs parked there appreciate it. Our next meeting will be on Thursday, July 3 at 10 am. I need to hear from you if you see something that needs to be addressed so I can add it to the monthly agenda. The report on items from our July meeting will appear in the August issue of the Eagle.
Our next meeting with HTA will be on Thursday, July 3rd and the report on the items discussed will be in the August issue of the Eagle.
Happy 4th of July from all of us at Fairways. During the celebrations, please remember that the use of fireworks is strictly prohibited here at Fairways as outlined in rule #20 of the prospectus. Thank you for your compliance.
Let’s get ready to cool off. I hope you enjoy many days cooling off in the pools or maybe working out in the air-conditioned Gym or playing cards in the Masters clubhouse. Either way, be careful not to get overheated.
On July 2, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, representatives from the 13 North American colonies voted to declare independence from British rule marking the birth of what would become the United States of America. Just two days later, on July 4, the Declaration of Independence was formally adopted, and ever since, Americans have celebrated this historic moment each year.
But what does Independence Day truly mean?
To me, it’s a time to reflect on the freedoms we are privileged to enjoy and to honor the tremendous sacrifices made to secure them. It’s a day for gratitude, remembrance, and unity, a moment to gather with family and friends, to celebrate our shared values, and to reaffirm our commitment to protecting our community and the liberty we cherish. Wishing you and your loved ones a joyful and meaningful Independence Day!
Upcoming Summer Events
Let’s get ready to cool off. I hope you enjoy many days cooling off in the pools or maybe working out in the air-conditioned Gym or playing cards in the Masters clubhouse. Either way, be careful not to get overheated, which can quickly happen when the temperatures are soaring. Here are some early signs of heat-related illness include excessive sweating, muscle cramps, and dizziness. As the body continues to overheat, symptoms can escalate and may include headache, nausea, vomiting, confusion, and, in severe cases, loss of consciousness.
To stay safe in hot weather:
• Stay hydrated
• Take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas
• Wear light, breathable clothing
• Watch for symptoms in yourself and others
If someone shows signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, seek medical attention immediately.

In 2003 Catherine Roberts, the QOVF, created the concept that supports the QOVF mission statement: to cover Service Members and living Veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.
What does “touched by war” mean”?
Only Service Members or living Veterans of the Armed Forces know what touched by war means to them, if they have been touched by war or whether they wish to share experiences. Their wishes are honored and they are not judged. Service Members and Veterans may be touched or affected by war in direct and indirect ways, sometimes with long-lasting impact.
Who is eligible to be awarded a Quilt of Valor? Service Members and living Veterans that served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Members of the activated National Guard and activated or active duty-special work (ADSW) reservists are included. The Army National Guard and Air Force National Guard are components of the Army and Air Force respectively. Merchant Marines activated from 1941 to 1945. Only Veterans with an Honorable, Medical or General Discharge status are eligible. QOVF does not award posthumously. Are
Service Member’s or Veteran’s families or other family support personnel eligible for QOVs? No, they are not. QOVF awards quilts only to Service Members and living Veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. QOVF acknowledges and appreciates the support of families. We also remember and honor those who have given their lives for our freedoms, but do not award QOVs posthumously. We would be honored to be able to award our fairways veterans with a Quilt of Valor For more information please contact Annie Ossenkop-Aaron at 559-760-9860. We can meet with you at your residence to have you fill put the necessary application.
• July 4th, 1776 the United States laid down its claim to be a free and independent nation by adopting the Declaration of Independence. Independence Day will be officially observed on Friday, July 4, 2025, our nation’s 247th birthday.
• July 25th is National Hire a Veteran Day.

The Seven Second Rule of Paw is a great way to test the conditions for a safe walk. Simply place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7-8 seconds. If the heat coming off the surface is uncomfortable on the back of your hand, it is likely too hot for your dog to walk on. If your hand can’t stand the heat, neither can your dog’s paws.

We thank our community, friends, and families for the donations that you have given us. It keeps us busy working on our projects. We received a request for items from Discovery Church for their mission trip, and we donated 16 pillowcase dresses, 13 pairs of shorts, and various hair items. If you have a church or organization that has mission trips and you would be interested in our items, you can contact Donna Dale at 561-818-1354. She can go over the items we have available. The sewing group is working on projects that we can use during the year. Currently, we are working
on placemats for Meals on Wheels and items for the Fairways Craft Show which will be held at the Masters on October 18th from 8:00 am-2:00 am
We are always looking for new members to join our group. The Sewing Group meet on Wednesdays from 8:30 until 11:00 at the Greenbrier. At 10, we stop for a coffee and a treat.
Come by to see us and see our work. If you don’t sew, that’s ok, we have other tasks that need to be done, like ironing and cutting out fabric. We look forward to welcoming you to one of our sessions.

On June 3, Diamond Jim Jessum looked across the breakfast table and said to his lovely wife Sherry, “let’s play golf today!” Little did he know that this would be his day to shine.
Jim and Sherry, winter residents of The Fairways, were trying to get in a round of golf before they headed north to Arnold Palmer country in Pennsylvania for the summer.
Jim and Sherry were enjoying their casual round of golf, hitting a few good shots and the occasional bad shot as we all do, when they came up to hole number 8, a par 3, with a deep bunker left and water to the right, a somewhat intimidating shot for the casual golfer.
Deep in the back of Diamond Jim’s mind as he walked to the tee with his fairway wood, was the hope that this might be the day he can put a check mark next to that elusive holein-one on his bucket list. Well, with one swing of the club he did just that!
It was reported that Jim unfortunately didn’t get to see the ball go into the hole, but Sherry did, and she jumped out of the cart and did a tumbling routine like a high school cheerleader (not really but it adds a bit of flair to the story).
All kidding aside, have a safe trip home for the summer and congratulations Jim on your accomplishment and hopefully this will be your first of many to come.
Notice to all golfers who have had hole-in-ones recently, if you go to the official Titleist website you can record your hole-in-one, and they will send you a bag tag to commemorate your ace.

Helping hands has a stock of all kinds of medical-related items and equipment donated by previous and current residents. It includes wheelchairs, knee scooters, walkers, canes, shower chairs and more! Helping Hands loans the items they have to Fairways residents on request and at no cost.
Helping Hands is managed by Cricket O’Donnell and you can call or text Cricket at: 413-262-1196. Not sure they have what you’re looking for? Just contact Cricket and she’ll let you know right way. Also, please keep Helping Hands in mind when you have any type of medical equipment you would like to donate. Thank you!
Residents reach out to a member of the FHAOI Board so we can get your information if you’d like to be in the next directory, register to vote with the FHAOI and answer any questions you may have.
Please be reminded of the following guidelines regarding waste pickup in our community:
• Regular Trash: Mondays
• Yard Waste: Wednesdays
• Bulk Pickup (Household Items): Thursdays.
Limited to two large items that two men can lift into a truck.
Effective immediately, Trash Taxi will no longer pick up construction or remodeling debris. This includes items such as cabinets, flooring, drywall, or multiple fixtures. One single toilet or small item may be acceptable, but emptying an entire house to the curb is not the responsibility of our contracted waste company. If you are remodeling or doing a major cleanout, please arrange for a dumpster or private haul-away service. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our community clean and orderly.

Our club meets on the third Monday of each month at 5 pm at the Masters for members and guests to meet and greet. Debbie Yeagley distributed door prize tickets when people signed in. Vice-President Paul DeRoo sold “Share the Wealth” tickets.
President Fran Archibald asked Dr. Gil Lowe to share memories of Rev. Ron Griffin and the anniversary of Bob Weir’s passing, our longtime Vice-President and dear friend.
The Reverend Ron Griffin passed away on June 13, 2025, after months of illness. His Celebration of Life was conducted on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. Ron left the love of his life, Veronica Tricoche-Griffin, who was devoted to him and cared for him until the end of his life here on Earth. His large family came from all over to his church service. He was an amazing person who was kind to all. He was a legend. He could sing like Elvis Presley and would always dress for the occasion. He gave special charms to almost everyone he met and blessed many with his personal charm and devotion to his Lord. The Fairways Masters Clubhouse was nearly filled to capacity with family and friends. He had a grand farewell party with bright and happy colors and a wonderful buffet created by his friends! He will missed and not forgotten.

How can you remember what you need to know?
by Geri Ossana
Even when we’re young, thinking skills may be a problem.
As we age most of us begin to realize that our memories aren’t what they once were.To counter the challenges we face, use memory cues. Those are internal reminders that help us recall information.
Using the acronym “HOMES” to remember the five Great Lakes is a good example. It also can help for you to write a shopping list or put items in the same place every day, so you know where to find them.
Memory cues, lists, and poems like, “Thirty days hath September.” or “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” are nothing new. We have learned memory cues over the years like using “Roy G. Biv” to remember the colors of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet).
You can experiment with different methods of memory cues to see what works well for you. Don’t feel guilty about finding a new way to keep old information handy. New cues are helpful and similar to what you’ve probably used all your life. Use whatever works for you.

Fran Archibald invited members and friends to enjoy our Potluck supper. There were amazing selections of casseroles, salads, franks and beans, fried chicken, deviled eggs, sandwiches, cakes, cookies, brownies and pies and so much more!
After dinner, President Fran Archibald opened the business meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance than asked for a moment of silence for those who are no longer with us.
Fran asked who had a June Birthday and we sang Happy Birthday and Fran gave everyone who was celebrating a birthday a candy bar. Paul DeRoo and Debbie Yeagley gave out Share the Wealth tickets to three winners for $20, $10 and $5. Door prizes were drawn by Debbie Yeagley and Paul DeRoo including vases, little oil lamps, a beautiful picture, figurines, a large T-shirt and many more donated items.
Fran thanked Ellie Armstrong who helped with food and Linda Murray who helped set up chairs and all members who helped with clean-up.
The evening ended with Hobo Bingo. Debbie Yeagley was our caller. Gil Lowe and Fran Archibald distributed prizes.
Happy Fourth of July!
This sign is NOT a ‘suggestion.’ ALL traffic must stop at ALL stop signs in Fairways. Every time. Always! Also applies to golf carts. Really!

In case you’ve been contacted by The American Community Survey and aren’t sure it’s legitimate!
The American Community Survey (ACS)
is an ongoing survey that provides vital information on a yearly basis about our nation and its people. Information from the survey generates data that helps inform how trillions of dollars in federal funds are distributed each year.
Every year, the U.S. Census Bureau contacts over 3.5 million households across the country to participate in the American Community Survey. When you respond to the survey, you are doing your part to ensure decisions about your community can be made using the best data available.
Through the ACS, we know more about jobs and occupations, educational attainment, veterans, whether people own or rent their homes, and other topics. Public officials, planners, and entrepreneurs use this information to assess the past and plan the future. When you respond to the ACS, you are doing your part to help your community plan for hospitals and schools, support school lunch programs, improve emergency services, build bridges, and inform businesses looking to add jobs and expand to new markets, and more.
How Do I Respond To the Survey?
We collect responses to the American Community Survey in four different ways: internet, mail, telephone, and in-person interviews.
The American Community Survey is a legitimate survey conducted by the Census Bureau.
Unlike the every-10-year census, this survey continues all year, every year. We randomly sample addresses in every state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
Answers are collected to create up-to-date statistics used by many federal, state, tribal, and local leaders. Some American Community Survey questions have been asked in the decennial census since it first began in 1790.
Do you want to verify that mail, phone calls or in-person interviews are legitimate?
If your household has been contacted to complete the American Community Survey and you would like to verify that this survey is legitimate, you can call toll-free 1-800-354-7271.
If someone has called you about the American Community Survey and you would like to verify that the phone call is legitimate, you can call one of our telephone centers directly:
• Jeffersonville, IN: 1-800-523-3205
• Tucson, AZ: 1-800-642-0469
