A Note from the President

This week we celebrate the 4th of July and the Independence of this country! The day when the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress and announced the separation of 13 North American British colonies from the United Kingdom of Great Britain. The day is also marked with family and friend get togethers, barbecues, fireworks, and community. Many of you in Fairways will be celebrating with neighbors in the community and enjoying the many Fireworks we will see that night. Let’s take the time July 4th to thank our neighbors and the many people who make Fairways a great community.

SHIRLEY LILLY

One of the folks I want to take a minute to reflect on is Shirley Lilly, who as you know, passed away this past month. Shirley spent her time in Fairways giving back to the community as an FHAOI Board Member, a Volunteer at events for many clubs and groups and much more. She gave back to her neighbors and especially to her friends. She will be missed by many in Fairways.

FHAOI BOARD ELECTIONS

We are heading into the second part of the year and that is marked with the election of new board members. We have three board seats open this year. If you are interested in running or have questions, please email FHAOIBoard@gmail. com. On August 12, we will host an informational session for those interested in running for the FHAOI Board. The meeting will be at the Masters at 7 pm.

We have already had some good interest from residents interested in being on the Board and I encourage you all to consider running. The work the FHAOI is doing is important to the residents of Fairways.

Fairways Sewing Club

We’re in the middle of a heat wave but we are still meeting in the Greenbrier Clubhouse from 8:30 until 11:00 am on Wednesday mornings.

Donations to report are 11 seatbelt protectors that were given to the Infusion Center for chemo patients. A crochet blanket was donated to the VA. We donated an assortment of material to Greda Sewing Studio in Oviedo. This woman makes hundreds of Christmas stockings to donate. Harry Thomsen was one of her famous elves. He would find numerous places to take the stockings. If anyone would like stockings to donate to a good cause, contact us and we can get them from the sewing group at Greda Sewing Studio and get them for you. Walker bags were given to two Fairways residents. Please contact us if you need a walker bag. There were six bibs donated to Childtime of Winter Park, a day care facility.

We want to thank our community and friends for your constant sewing items that keep coming into our group. The other day we had a visit from Dianna Ramos bringing ribbons and beautiful material for our supplies.

Please stop in any Wednesday morning to see what’s in the works and drop off your items, or if you prefer us to pick up an item you can call Donna Dale (561818-1354) or Susan Creighton (407-382-8718). Currently, we are starting to work on items to display and sell at the annual Craft Show on September 28.

Happy Independence Day! I want to take a minute to thank all our men and women serving in the armed forces, both past and present, whose sacrifice protects our independence still to this day. So, as we all enjoy the July 4th celebrations, let’s keep them in our hearts.

HTA Social Director Update

Hello to hot JULY. Hoping everyone has a safe 4th of July. Remember our vets on this day also, many are affected by the loud noises, so please check on your neighbors. Remember a lot of our pets are afraid of loud noises.

Please keep your pets safe. We know we cannot shoot off fireworks, but surrounding neighborhoods can.

We are going to try something new in July. I have a game show company coming in to play Music Bingo on Friday, July 19 at the Masters Club House at 6:00 pm. Come on out and let’s see what this is all about. They also have other games that we can ask about and see if we are interested. Please text me at 407-607-4728 to let me know you plan to attend. Thanks.

It is also time for a Wine & Cheese Social! It will be on Sunday, July 14 at 6:00 pm at the Masters Club House. As always, I will provide some wine and cheese, but please feel free to bring a bottle of your favorite to share also. And we always accept goodies at the wine and cheese table to share.

I also have a speaker coming in to talk to us and answer questions concerning Senior Safety at Home. They will be at the Masters Club House on Monday, July 22 at 1:00 pm.

Please try to attend for some valuable information.

I am writing to address and stop the rumors about the status of the Fairways Food Pantry. The pantry still exists, and Sandy Dennis and I have been running it for several years now.

Fairways Food Pantry Still in Operation! FAIRWAYS PANTRY FOOD

We have transitioned from bringing perishable foods into our homes to providing gift cards to our recipients. We continue to serve those in need in the community and rely on the generosity of individuals like to you help us continue our efforts. We visit our recipients every month and assist them with the funds available to us.

As many of you know, we do fundraisers to support the food pantry. Kim Hysong and Liz Perdue organize the “Boo” and “You’ve Been Elfed” events in the yards during Halloween and Christmas.

Sandy and James Dennis run our golf ball donation station on the 7th tee box, and they also help Curt and I host brisket and hotdog sales out of our carports. We will continue these efforts to support this cause in our park. Please continue to save and drop golf balls you collect in your yards for us. This keeps the program running!

To support the pantry, we will be hosting a brisket and hotdog fundraiser when Sandy returns after the summer at the September yard sale.

We would very much appreciate your monetary donations! Just contact Sandy or me. We don’t give cash to our recipients; everyone receives a gift card.

Thank you for your help. We couldn’t continue the program without our generous donors.

Singles

Club

The Singles Club has lost two long-standing members.

Bob Leggett was one of the few men to join us for dinner on a regular basis. His sense of humor and his kindness were his hallmarks.

Shirley Lilly was a past president of the club and an active member of our community. Her smile and sunny personality were a welcome addition to any meeting. Both of them will be truly missed.

Dinner will be at Don Julio’s located at 12789 Waterford Lakes Parkway on July 7 at 4 pm. During the summer months we change brunch on the third Thursday to dinner at Goodfellas. We will be meeting at Goodfellas on July 18 at 4 pm.

This sign is NOT a ‘suggestion.’ ALL traffic must stop at ALL stop signs in Fairways. Every time. Always! Also applies to golf carts. Really!

At our general member meeting on May 23, we had 37 members in attendance, and we had 3 winners for share the wealth. Our general meetings are open to all Fairways residents and are held on the fourth Thursday of the month at 6:00 pm at the Masters Clubhouse. After a brief informational meeting we enjoyed birthday cake, and games like dominoes and bingo, and we would love to see you there.

You can reach the club at our newly revamped Facebook page at Latin American Club at Fairways (LACF) or by email at latinamericanclub2024@gmail.com. The club President, Gladys Carpena, can also be contacted directly at either (201) 710-0753 or (407) 456-3091.

Rock n Roll Club is still moving and grooving! Our goal for 2024 membership was 180 members and we have already passed that goal and it is now over 200. The attendance goal was an average of 125 per dance, and we have an average of over 165 per dance.

The Club offers a dance once a month with a live band, and we do not serve food or drinks.

We have been around for over 40 years and the last membership price increase was in the 90’s, bringing the current cost for a member ticket to $5. Annual Membership hasn’t gone up either, it is still $5. There is no other club here at Fairways that continues to offer entertainment of this quality, at this LOW PRICE!

We have added two new bands to the rotation for 2024 and have scoped out another new band for 2025, so we will have 3 new bands to add to the rotation going forward. We also added a door prize of a $50 Gift Card; but in June to Celebrate a half year of continued growth, we had a $100 Gift Card and continue the Share the Wealth. In the fall at the November Dance, we will have the Rock n Roll Clubs Annual Charity Christmas Toy Drive; last year collecting over 350 Toys and over $700 in Cash and Gift Cards; our goal will be to double that amount for 2024!

We will continue to work to bring Great Bands, in a fun atmosphere for the residents of the Fairways Country Club to enjoy.

If you’re not yet a Rock n Roll Club Member; We strongly encourage YOU to JOIN, so You too can Enjoy the FUN, your neighbors are having every month! Even if you don’t dance, you can sit and listen to the Live Band and Enjoy!

We are always open to suggestions; contact Mike Scanlon president @ mscan6121@gmail.com

Cause for Celebration!

July is definitely the month for celebration in our wonderful country. As followers of Jesus, we also daily celebrate the birth and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Would you like to learn more about the Bible? This month you can join the ladies of the Fairways Christian Women’s Connection at two Bible study sessions. They are on Thursday, July 11 and 25 at 2 pm. Both studies are held at Jo Lynn Haussmann’s home, 14721 Firestone.

We are also doing our bimonthly “out-to-lunch” at Cheddar’s on Tuesday, July 30th at noon. We will meet at the Masters at 11:30 for carpooling.

Our outreach partner is the Samaritan Resource Center which serves our area’s homeless. They help approximately 80 people per day with breakfast, lunch and snacks. Please remember to pick up a case of bottled water when you go to the grocery store. Also, small size soap, shampoo and similar items are appreciated. If you have any questions, please email Jane Slotnick at jaslotnick5@gmail.com or text Joy Ruggiero at 614-743-4402.

Sock Hop

The 1950s was the height of the sock hop -- a pop culture phenomenon. The hops got their name because of the requirement that you remove your shoes, so they didn’t scuff up the wooden floors of the school gyms that hosted the mixers.

Tickets are $7.

There will be prizes for the Best Dressed Couple and for the Best Dressed Individual. The night will include hula hoop and limbo contests!

A Mother Rules Father’s Day

Colleen Fraser, mother of five, stole the show on Father’s Day this year with her first ever Hole in One playing in the Sunday Mixed League.

Colleen was playing without her usual partner, Shannon Keltner, three-time member of the Hole in One Club, and was paired with Howard May, Brian Shaw and Gerry Mishloney.

QUILT DONATION

Annie Ossenkop’s daughter has a friend with a 6-year-old daughter who has stage four cancer. Hoping this will help keep her spirits up and provide some comfort as she goes through her treatments.

Fairways Piecemakers at their best!

Feeling the pressure of performing to a high level on this day, Ms. Fraser walked to the tee on hole number 2 playing at 88 yards and took aim and struck her pink ball, the orb sailed through the hot humid air, landed on the green and rolled into the hole. The screams from Colleen could be heard as far away as the 18th green. She finished the day with the round of her life blasting tee shots and sticking approach shots to within inches of the cup. She brought Fairways Golf Course to its knees. Upon finishing her round, she happily bought everyone in the pro shop a round of drinks. Congratulations Colleen, and welcome to the Hole in One Club!

Veterans Corner

This July 4th Independence Day, we commemorate 248 years This July 4th Independence Day, we commemorate 248 years of the “Declaration of Independence”, which was ratified by the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia. The Congress voted to approve independence by passing the Lee Resolution on July 2nd and adopted the Declaration of Independence two days later.

We want wish everyone a safe, pleasant and happy 4th of July.

Last month we started the “Helping Homeless Veterans Drive”. We are uniting with the Veterans Administration and other local organizations to help Homeless Veterans in the area. We are taking donations of toiletry items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, floss, combs, hairbrushes, shampoo, feminine products and similar items. The donation box has been placed at the Greenbrier Library. If you are not able to drop off your donations or have questions, please call me at 407-913-3681.

We still have our “Bricks Honoring Our Veterans” campaign. For $40.00 you can order a brick to honor a veteran that you know. It can be a family member or a friend. They do not need to live in Fairways nor do they have to be deceased. We want all our Fairways residents to join us in honoring all veterans. We will need their name, branch of service, rank and years of service.

Commanders Thoughts:

Many veterans might on occasion need a ride to the grocery store or doctor’s appointments. I want to inform all veterans that if they are ever in need of a ride, we are here for you. Please contact us and we will find a way to help you. If any resident knows of a veteran in the Fairways community who needs help, please let us know.

Good Life

After the last thunderstorm

I wanted to know what can protect our residents. Do you know the 30-30 rule for lightning? Go indoors if, after seeing lightning, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder, and stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder. Showering during a thunderstorm is taking a risk of electrocution! Metal pipes are worse than plastic pipes but avoid using any plumbing system or running water (sinks, baths, faucets) during a thunderstorm, especially if the storm is right overhead. A toilet can explode during a lightning storm! Of course, stay away from windows and exterior doors and stay off porches. Stay off the phone and off the computer. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to the storm to be struck by lightning! A house is a safe place to be during a thunderstorm as long as you avoid touching anything that conducts electricity. Trees, houses, cars and people are all at risk when storms are in the area. A car can be damaged in many different ways by the electrical discharge. Lightning can shatter car windows through the defrosting wires.

Lightning strikes in the U.S. about 25 million times a year, kills about 20 people in our country every year, and severely injures hundreds more. There were 13 lightning deaths in 2023. Are you scared? Good. Better safe than sorry.
