Thank you to my board for jumping right in and making things happen. We are working together, and positive things are in the works.”
CATHY NANFELDT
FHAOI PRESIDENT
From Your FHAOI President
It’s been a long January with chilly weather and cloudy skies. I hope everyone has managed to stay healthy and stay warm in their homes.
Our first board meeting of the year on January 9 had a decent turnout. Some key points to report:
• The printer that had been printing The Eagle, Central Florida Publishing, closed their doors at the end of January. We found a new printer – Boom Communications Group – and were fortunately able to reduce our printing costs for the paper, which was excellent news. The savings will be around $500.00 per issue. The 2025 Budget was approved.
• Board Secretary Nancy Lang and I will begin monthly meetings with Priscilla Herrick, with the first scheduled for February 6. These meetings are an opportunity to discuss resident issues that are brought to the attention of FHAOI and then report back to you at the next board meeting.
• We are excited that FHAOI has a website created by our social director, Melanie Klements! The site is www. fairwaysorlando.com and the QR code to scan on your phone – it takes you
directly to the events tab - is on this page. The website will not replace the weekly slides that run on the TVs in our neighborhood and on Facebook, they will continue as before. It is an additional way for you to access information from FHAOI on upcoming activities, and a place to sign up to volunteer to help at activities and events. The site will remain simple and user friendly and we appreciate your suggestions to make it even better! Thank you to Melanie for taking on this project.
• The board has changed the Saturday on-call office hours at the FHAOI office at the Greenbrier. They are now 9-11 am most Saturdays. There is a notice on the door with the board member on-call. For example, if you need copies made, give them a call and they will meet you there. Please note we are not able to send faxes.
Thank you to my board for jumping right in and making things happen. We are working together, and positive things are in the works. We have some unique events coming up along with the old favorites so please read the Eagle for more news and check out the website.

Bocce Ball Update
by Gary Cessna
Aconsiderable amount of time and attention has been paid to readying the bocce courts for tournament play this winter season. David Gregg and Bill Cochell were instrumental in helping me, and I thank them and everyone else involved. Hometown America came through with some new sand/clay mixture that was pretty much gone from the hurricane, along with a new roller. It took a lot of patience and work to get it properly packed down and evened out correctly. Not to mention our shoes are forever colored
red! We thank Hometown America for also sending several maintenance crew members to help in the process, and for the new PVC boards that Greg and I then put together for the larger and easier to read scorekeepers. HTA is also going to order three weather resistant picnic tables so we can have space for food and drinks plus more sitting room.
FHAOI came through with their Building Community grant and reimbursed us for equipment rental as well as several new items (broom, rake, etc.) so that we now have

wonderful community we live in. We have so many amazing residents who go above and beyond time and time again to help others. We saw it over the holidays when meals were prepared for many residents and again this month with a food fundraiser to assist a resident. It is so awesome that we really do live among some of the best! You know who you are and bravo to you all!
Our next board meeting is Thursday, February 13 at 7 pm at the Masters. If you have an item you would like to see discussed, please give me a call so I can put it on the agenda. We hope to have some updates on volunteers to renew the welcome committee along with block captains and more. I welcome your input and suggestions, so don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

everything we need to keep the courts in top condition.
The Bocce Camp for New Players was well attended and last year’s tournament winners, Gene and Paul, made an appearance to share some wisdom.
Play has begun and except for a couple rainy days, everyone has been upbeat, and Bocce seems to be as popular as ever in Fairways! Let’s all have fun! See you at the courts.

New England Club Update
by Jean Kijek
Debbie Yeagley welcomed members and guests to the January meeting with door prize tickets. VicePresident Paul DeRoo sold share the wealth tickets and President Fran Archibald invited guests to join our potluck supper buffet. Lots of delicious dishes – casseroles, salads, vegetables and desserts.
Fran opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for those who could not be with us. The January birthdays of Claire Sourwine and Ronnie Tricoche-Griffin were celebrated and the anniversaries of Ronnie and Ron TricocheGriffin – fourteen years - and Cathy and Adam Scheblein – one year.
Sunshine Chair Ronnie Tricoche-Griffin reported sending get well cards to Dorothy Gurry-Pfeiffer, Jean Kijek, Joylyn Houwen, Letizia Morales, Edwin Ramirez and Nora Brendel and asked for thoughts and prayers for the Reverend Ron Griffin.
Paul de Roo distributed the Share the Wealth winnings to Linda Hopgood, Mike Scanlon, Joan Estabrook and Karen Meyer.
Thank you to all who donated the many door prizes – your generosity is appreciated! Thank you to Claire and Tom Carter for setting up the tables and chairs and to Julia Kerns, Kitchen Angel for cleaning the kitchen and tables.
HOBO Bingo was called by Debbie Yeagley and Gil Lowe distributed the Bingo Prizes. Thank you both and thanks also to Fran for managing this fun event. A good time was had by all.

FAIRWAYS COURTESY VAN

PRISCILLA HERRICK
From Your HTA Manager Hometown America Celebrates Fairways During February
February has many historical events, including the invention of the steamboat, the opening of Grand Central Station, and the signing of the 13th Amendment. It is also home to several holidays, including Valentine’s Day, Presidents’ Day, and Groundhog Day.
We are celebrating FAIRWAYS RESIDENTS the entire month of February. Look for a Hometown America resident event each week in the calendar. We have many things planned like Ice Cream Socials and our annual Hometown Invitational of February 26th. Do not miss a fun-filled February.
A resident asked me to remind everyone that the Golf Course is for GOLFERS ONLY. Lately we have seen residents walking their dogs on the course, visiting grandchildren riding golf carts on the course and residents using the cart paths as shortcuts. This is forbidden. Only people engaged in playing golf should be on the course. It is extremely dangerous for pedestrians and pets. Can you imagine your grandchild being hit with a rocketed golf ball or even your pet? Please respect the signage and stay off the course.
Let us please be respectful of the noise level when we are outside or sitting on the screen porch. Your neighbors can hear your conversations and music. Please afford them the quiet enjoyment that we strive to provide all our neighbors.
The biggest capital improvement this year is the installation of a new wastewater treatment plant. The demolition will be starting early in February and construction will continue for several months. We will have many dump trucks and concrete trucks coming and going during construction. We will also have to temporarily re-route our golf cart path around the construction site. I will keep you updated by One Call of the progress of construction and any changes in traffic pattern or golfers cart patterns when necessary. Thank you in advance for your much-appreciated understanding as we work hard to improve our community.
THANK YOU Thank you to those residents that are out working around their homes freshening up the landscape and planting flowers. It looks beautiful. My personal thanks to: Mona Levison Naomi Attama Kenneth Duffy Kenneth Rhodes

We e Our Residents
“I am excited that we will show our appreciation to Fairways residents throughout the month. Kicking off resident appreciation month, Hometown will host an ice cream social at the Masters on Monday, February 3rd starting at noon,” Barb Mishloney, Hometown Social Director, said. “The social is first-come, firstserved while the ice cream lasts.”
On Valentine’s Day, Friday 14, the Dave Capp ensemble returns for an evening of magic from 7-10 p.m. Tickets will be available at the Masters on Sunday, February 2 from 1-2 p.m. and from 5-6 p.m.
“Everyone will want to enjoy an evening of friendship at the Winter Wine and Cheese social on Sunday, February 16 at the Masters from 6-8 p.m.,” Johnny Cutsinger said. “Some wine and snacks will be provided, and all are encouraged to bring their favorite wine and snacks to share.”
Finishing out the month will be the annual Hometown America Golf Tournament on Wednesday, February 26 with a full day of activities.
Open to all residents, the sign-up sheet is at the Pro Shop. Limited space is available so players should sign up early.
Check-in will be at the Masters February 26 at 8 a.m. with coffee and donuts.
Lunch will be provided at the end of tournament to honor the first-place winners. Share the Wealth tickets will benefit the Alzheimer’s Foundation. Tickets will be available at checkin and at lunch. Prizes will also be raffled off.
Guidelines for Facilities Use Clarified
In a meeting with the clubs and groups that use Fairways facilities, Hometown America representatives, Barb, assisted by Johnny, provided community members with the guidelines for using both the Greenbrier and Masters Clubhouse.
“We feel it is important to provide details to best make clear the responsibilities and expectations of residents using Fairways facilities,” Barb, Hometown America social director. Specifics about the reserving the facilities as well as managing the set-up, the event and the clean-up, were made clear and are communicated in the Fairways facilities guides.
“It is our goal to make sure residents using Hometown America facilities have a great experience,” Johnny said. “Our community is dynamic and hosts activities and events for the diverse interest of residents. We want to support all our groups who use the facilities.”

Fairways Resident Profile Published Author Sylvia Vega

airways resident Sylvia Vega knew she wanted to be a nurse. And more specifically, she needed to use her training and expertise in an underserved area. She decided that longterm care was the right fit for her.
Sylvia earned her LPN degree through Orlando Tech and her RN degree from the University of the State of New York in the early days of online learning – “before online learning was ‘ordinary’,” Sylvia joked.
In the beginning it wasn’t only long-term care. “I worked for an agency for some time and that meant I bounced around in a lot of different locations and that was interesting. And in the 1990’s nurses were giving out flu shots and I would be going between different retail locations dispensing those. Now that’s something the pharmacist handles.”
And why long-term care? “Whenever long-term care came up in discussions it always seemed to me it was talked about as if it was sort of lifeless. And it isn’t at all. It’s full of life,
Nursing Tip #4:
Don’t use applesauce to mix crushed meds in. It tastes terrible.
with so many stories and so many different and interesting people. The feeling also was that long-term care only involves the elderly and of course, that’s not true. Many younger people also need long-term care, whether it be because of an accident or illness.”
What’s the hardest part of working as a nurse, particularly in long-term care? Sylvia thought a moment and said, “I would say that in any nursing situation it’s the need, and the ability to be able to compartmentalize what’s going on. For example, you may be having to talk to a family member when someone has passed away and that’s always difficult, and then when you’ve finished that conversation go and talk to the patient in the next room who is doing well, and you must be positive and upbeat with them. In long-term care, you of course, get attached to the residents and when someone dies you really feel the loss, and you are delighted when someone gets well enough to leave and go home.”
Now to the book. “Last Stop Before Heaven,” is a novel – set in Florida - with a nurse as the main protagonist. Clearly written by a nurse and interspersed with some excellent ‘Nursing Tips,’ the book focuses on the human side of nursing and the daily interactions in a long-term facility setting.
Nursing Tip #10:
There are organizations that bring dogs and other animals to visit the sick and the injured. Do everything you can to get them to come to your unit. With some types of hurt, animals have healing powers that humans simply do not have.
“I’ve always loved writing, and poetry, and short stories are what I’ve done most,” Sylvia said, “It was definitely a challenge to write a novel and I’m very glad I did it.” Sylvia’s poetry has appeared in diverse media formats ranging from CBS Dallas/ Fort Worth, the Married to the Army website and the Monadnock Writers Group Monadnock Reader. One of her short stories was included in a Women’s History Month Exhibit at Wellesley College. “Last Stop Before Heaven” is her first novel. Is there another novel in the works? “I do have a manuscript I’ve been working on – something completely different from the first novel - and I’ll see where that leads!”
Sylvia has been a resident of Fairways since 2008, is happily retired – after working in patient/ resident care for more than 25 years - and enjoys spending time with her husband Pablo. Sylvia volunteers as an Ambassador for the American Lung Association.
You can find a copy of her book in the Fairways library, and it is available on Amazon.

Support a Neighbor Fairways Residents Come Together
There are no words to truly express the gratitude I feel for the overwhelming support shown by the Fairways community and friends during the recent pasta benefit. The kindness, generosity, and sense of togetherness that everyone brought to this event were nothing short of extraordinary.
Nothing in life can prepare you for the loss of a loved one, let alone your child. The pain is indescribable. I know some of you have experienced this same heartbreak and your kind words, shared strength, and unwavering support have meant the world to me.
This benefit was not just about raising funds; it was about coming together as a community to support one another in a time of deep sorrow and need. From the volunteers who helped organize the event, to those who donated time, food, or money, and everyone who came to enjoy a plate of pasta and offer a comforting word, you all made a difference.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your support has been a light in the darkest of times, and I am forever grateful to call this community home.
Sincerely, Shirley Aponte, Fairways Resident

We “Love” Jesus
As we start the month of “love” with Valentine’s Day, let’s remember our love for Jesus which encourages us to “love” others. We can do that with our words and actions. So, let’s step out of our comfort zone and share our love for Jesus with everyone we see each day. You never know the kind of day someone is having, so a smile or kind word can make a big difference.

This month we have a full slate of Bible study dates. Our evening study is on Thursday, February 6th and 20th, at the Greenbrier at 6:30 pm. We’re continuing our study of the book of Mark. Jo Lynn Haussmann will have her afternoon sessions on February 13th and 27th at 3:30 pm at her home. Her address is 14721 Firestone. Remember all Fairways ladies are invited to all of our events.
Each month the FCWC continues to bring donations to our outreach partner, Samaritan Resource Center. This month please look through your closet for warm clothes and blankets that you no longer need. Our drop-off box is at Penny Maguire’s home at 14349 Augusta Road. If you have any questions, please email Jane Slotnick at jaslotnick5@gmail.com or text Joy Ruggiero at 614-743-4402.
PLEASE READ
Completed directory forms are slowly trickling into the FHAOI office. We need more participation and residents agreeing to have their information in the directory to make it worthwhile reprinting a new 2025 book. Please take the time to turn in the form so we can have a more comprehensive directory. If there are changes to your listing in the previous directory, please go ahead and fill out a form so we can list the most up-to-date in the directory.
This will be the last month this form will be included in the Eagle. Thank you for your participation.

Please Note:
If you are in the FHAOI Community Directory (large green one) and you have no changes, you do NOT need to do anything. If you were in the Hometown America directory (smaller blue one), you must fill out and return this form to the FHAOI Office at the Greenbrier to be included in the large green directory. HTA will not be making another one. Thank you!

Three Kings Day!
On January 4th, 2025, The Latin American Club at Fairways celebrated the Three Kings Day, (Dia de los Reyes), also known as the Epiphany, which is observed every year on January 6th.
According to Christian beliefs, this day commemorates the arrival of the Magi, also known as the Wise Men or the Three Kings, at the birthplace of Jesus in Bethlehem. These three wise men, named Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar, are said to have followed a star known as the Star of Bethlehem, to find the newborn Messiah.
The Gospel of Matthew tells the story of how the Wise Men brought three symbolic gifts to present to the infant Jesus: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Gold symbolized Jesus’ kingship, frankincense represented his divinity, and myrrh foreshadowed his suffering and death.
The Masters Hall was beautifully decorated with crisp white tablecloths and chair covers and each table had a runner of either Gold or Green to celebrate the richness and wealth of the season. The table centerpieces were crowns symbolizing Christs reign as King. The traditional Puerto Rican Band. “La Charanga San Juan” provided great music and the members and their guests danced the night away. A buffet served various dishes including rice, chicken, pork, and dessert. What a wonderful way to celebrate the start of the New Year!
The coming year for the LACF is packed with many events including a member appreciation day in April and of course, be sure to join us for “Cinco Di Mayo.”
The next two months we will be registering members for 2025. Registration is $10 and this includes a chance to win a big screen TV just for being a member. You can register by attending our monthly meeting or contacting a board member, you can also contact us on Facebook.

The Puerto Rican band, La Charanga San Juan played for the event.
SCAM Alert! Fairways Latin American Club Celebrates
Unknown Number? Don’t Answer!
Receiving a call from an unknown number may seem harmless, but it could be the start of a scam. Criminals are using increasingly sophisticated tactics to deceive you into revealing personal information or making payments. Here are three tips to protect yourself from unknown callers.
1. Let it ring. The easiest thing to do is not answer the call. If it is important, the caller will leave a message or call back again.
2. Let the caller speak first. Most scammers use an auto dialer – an automated system that calls a bunch of random numbers at the same time and connects to a live person when someone answers the phone. That brief pause or delay before the caller speaks is a red flag that the call could be a scam.
3. Block suspicious calls. Check with your service provider to learn about options to block spam and scam calls.

Should older people own a pet for their good health?
by Geri Ossana
If your dear pet has passed on, should you get another? Recent studies suggest that pet ownership is associated with improved mental health. Having a pet may contribute to slower cognitive decline and your pet may help keep your brain sharp and improve your mental health. The key is the stress-lowering benefits pets provide. They provide companionship and a sense of purpose and responsibility – both of which are linked to better moods and sharper thinking skills. Of course, we all know that long term pet ownership has its challenges. There are financial commitments. Having a pet underfoot can raise the risk of falling. But if you have been a pet owner in the past, you probably are aware what it takes to properly care for a pet and in return all the affection, companionship, and devotion you receive.

Welcome to Keltner’s Korner

This section of The Eagle newspaper is to highlight
Shannon Keltner’s golfing exploits as it seems every time we turn around he’s done it again…well guess what …he did it again!!
Shannon “Hidecki” Keltner was playing in The Carpenter Group on this on Monday, December 30th, when he scored his second hole in one within 8 days.
Shannon, a 2-handicapper, was playing in a foursome with Jim “Gunny” Hofer, Thom “The Reverend” Roberts and Scott “Don’t call me Shmuck” Glover.
Shannon was having his usual day, fairways and greens basically boring golf, when he pulled up to number 8, a par 3 which in the past has given him a little bit of trouble but not this day, on this day he made it his victim.
Number 8 was playing 112 yards into a light breeze.
Shannon pulled his 9 iron and setup for his patented Keltner Kut, a shot taught to him by his mother, Debbie Keltner. He took a smooth swing and delvered the ball to the green about two feet left of the hole and the ball rolled towards the hole and disappeared.
After the ball found the hole he turned to his playing partners, who were jumping up and down like school girls, with a blank look on his face and said calmly “it went in the hole.”
Tim Barber, who was unable to play that day, just happened to pull up at the right time to witness the spectacle and join in the ace embrace, a very manly hug derived from the Celtic warriors post battle victory celebration.
After his round Shannon collected his cash prize from the hole in one pot, which has been renamed, Shannon’s Savings Account, and bought everyone in the group a drink.
Congratulations again Shannon on your 5th hole in one and a great way to end the year!!

Congratulations Elizabeth!
Elizabeth Sandres Padilla bagged a hole in one on the 15th hole during the mixed couple’s league on December 14th. This was Elizabeth’s second ace - both within the last year.
The eagle was witnessed by Bill Ruth, John Saunders and Tammy Faro. Elizabeth hit an 8 iron from the gold tees. Her Bridgestone E6 soared over the pond, bounced twice and rolled uphill to the back hole location.
Smiles all around, drinks for those in the league and a good time was had by all.
