FHAOI held a 70’s Dance on Saturday, July 19. The dance floor was overflowing and everyone enjoyed DJ Zach Scott. The crowd was dancing the night away and if you weren’t on the dance floor you could enjoy watching the music videos and various clips from popular shows like Three’s Company and CHIPS. It was a great way to relive the past. Once again, the popcorn machine was out.
by Patti Singleton
We appreciate everyone who dressed up and attended. The costumes were amazing. The winners of the costume contest were Johnnie, Sandy and Sherri. The 70’s Dance seemed to be a very popular theme, and we hope to do it again. We had a lot of compliments about DJ Zach Scott, and he will be back in the future. Thanks to Melanie for finding him to entertain us!

CATHY NANFELDT
I’d like to start off my article this month by taking time to say, “Welcome to Fairways!” to any new residents. I invite you to give me a call and we can talk on the phone, or I can meet you at one of the clubhouses to answer any questions you may have – if I don’t know, I should know where to get a quick reply for you.
I know when you move to our neighborhood that Hometown America doesn’t give you any information about activities and such. There is a lot you can get involved with if you choose. And it’s very helpful to understand the difference between the front office and FHAOI. So again, welcome, and I hope to hear from you.
We don’t have too much going on this summer. This month we have a Board Meeting on Thursday, August 14 at 7 pm in the Masters. We will cover in detail items that were discussed at the monthly meeting with Priscilla, and we will officially “kick off” the board elections which happen in October. If any resident wishes to learn more about running for a position on the board, you can contact any current board member and hopefully you can attend the August meeting. Remember, you must be a homeowner and have registered to be the voting member of your household to be eligible.
On Saturday, August 16 from 11 am – 2 pm the FHAOI is hosting a Clubs/Groups Meet & Greet at the Masters. It has been a couple of years since a gathering like this has been held and there are a lot of new group leaders and several new groups, so we feel this will be a perfect opportunity for interested residents to come browse the tables and ask any questions directly with the heads of the various clubs.
FHAOI PRESIDENT
Let’s all keep our fingers crossed as we begin another month of hurricane season that our luck continues. Of course, our almost daily storms have proven to hold some punch with the thunder this year. No doubt many animals, along with jittery residents, are happy when the storm passes.
I’ve had calls from upset residents regarding people ignoring the posted speed limit of 15 mph throughout the park. Just as bad are the delivery trucks sometimes driving as if they simply don’t care. I know it is nearly impossible, but to properly report a delivery truck, the company is going to ask for the number of the truck or license plate and the time they passed your home. The stop signs exist on our roads for a reason so if you happen to be one of those lead footers or one who enjoys rolling through the stops, please consider the safety of our many walkers, golf carts, pets and wildlife. We will do a lot to keep the peace and arrive safely wherever we are headed. Take care and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or issues you’d like to see addressed at the meetings.
Thanks were given to HTA for the recent improvements to both the Westchester with the painting project and the Greenbrier with the roofing project.
1. The non-working TV in the Masters has yet to be replaced as well as checking on the projector to see if there is a way to get it to sync with rack system. With all the events that take place in the Masters, including weekly bingo, it sure would be nice if we didn’t have to wait until Hometown America’s 2026 budget to at least have the TV updated and the projector able to be used.
2. I’m not quite sure what else to say regarding the excessive heat and absolutely no cool air coming from the vents in the poker room (to the left of the stage) in the Masters. I’m being told that it is in fine working order. Priscilla did mention the possibility of blackout shades for the windows. I believe this would help. I hope to have a positive update next month.
3. Twelve brand new lounge chairs have arrived at the Westchester pool! Thanks again to Hometown America. They were desperately needed.
4. I was asked at the June Board Meeting about the front gates and how they operate if there is a power outage, especially a hurricane. Priscilla stated that they are locked open during that time.
5. The Bocce Group inquired about the possibility of having canopy covers at each end of the bocce courts, so the hot sun doesn’t beat down on the players – similar to the shuffleboard courts. Priscilla acknowledged this was a good idea and this will hopefully find its way in the 2026 budget.
6. We spoke about the possibility of additional handicap spots at the Masters parking lot. Apparently there used to be another one at the mailboxes but the Postal Service required a dedicated space for the mail truck, so that was taken. This topic will be addressed again at the next meeting.
7. When asked about the wastewater treatment plant project and its progress, Priscilla said everything is moving right along and going well.
Our next monthly meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 7 at 10:00 am. If anyone has an item you would like us to discuss and report on, please reach out to me right away. Thank you.

Happy Summer everybody. . It’s certainly been a hot one. Thankfully no big storms so far but please be Hurricane aware though. Make sure your Hurricane kits have fresh batteries, flashlights, and a generator if you have one that is ready to go. Keep plenty of water on hand. Make sure you have a plan in case we are ordered to evacuate. My hope is we don’t need any of those things this Hurricane season. Make sure to let your family know your plan. Now let’s move on from Hurricane preparation.
On Friday, August 15, Hometown America, Johnny and I are hosting the All in Casino Company. It will be a very fun evening with Casino games at the Masters club house from 6:00 - 9:00 pm. Tickets were advertised and available on July 28. If they didn’t all go on that evening for this very popular event, then tickets will be available at the Masters on Monday, August 4 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm, or until gone, whichever comes first.
On July 3, we hosted a pool party with hot dogs, chips and frozen Virgin margaritas. I apologize for the problem with the frozen slush machine. I think we have it all figured out for the next event that includes Slushies.
Please, Please Slow Down!
by Shelli Mottram
We all say we care about safety in this community, but actions speak louder than words. Recently, a resident once again tore through our streets ignoring speed limits, ignoring the fact that this is a neighborhood, and ignoring that lives (yes, even small ones) matter.
As a result, a turtle was crushed. Carelessly. Needlessly. This isn’t just about a turtle. It’s about being so wrapped up in yourself that you can’t slow down for two seconds to think about other people, pets, neighbors, wildlife. This is selfish. It’s dangerous.
AND IT’S HEARTBREAKING
Speeding down our roads doesn’t make you important. It makes you reckless. If you live here, act like it. Respect our park. Respect life. Slow. Down.
The resident was reported to the office and HTA have been in contact with them.

We Have Hope! “Take It Slow” Yard Sign Safety Campaign
All who have faith and believe in the Lord, have hope. No matter what each day brings, whether a trial or joyous occasion. Our hope is in Jesus Christ.
The ladies in the Fairways Christian Women’s Connection want to share this hope with all who live in Fairways.
No matter what our activities, all ladies are invited and will be welcomed.
This month, our Praise and Prayer time will be on Saturday, August 2, at 11 am at the home of Frank and Reenie Nix. Their address is 1734 Inverary.
Our afternoon Bible study sessions are meeting at Dustin’s Barbecue at 2 pm on Thursday, August 14th and 28th. We can all enjoy “yummy” barbecue at our Lunch and Share time.
With the weather so hot, we’re collecting bottled water for the Samaritan’s Resource Center. Also, if you’re able, pick up a box of Ziploc bags any size. Our drop off box is at 14349 Augusta Road. If you have any questions, please email Jane Slotnick at jaslotnick5@ gmail.com or text Joy Ruggiero at 614-743-4402.
The “Take It Slow” yard sign campaign is a safety awareness initiative that has been in existence now for three years. Its purpose is to act as a reminder for drivers, of both vehicles and golf carts, to slow down and stop at stop signs. Remember, it could be your visiting grandchild, loving animal, or spouse riding a bicycle, etc. on the road that could be severely injured or worse. Your support of this initiative is important for the safety of our residents.
We welcome any current or new resident to contact us to request a free “Take It Slow” yard sign. Signs are generally put out once a month on a Friday – check the calendar in the Eagle - and taken back in on a Monday. Each December a new yearly schedule is published in the Eagle to inform residents when to put the signs out and when to remove them.
TAKE IT
Golf cart license plates are also available for $10. They can be applied with Velcro, therefore - there is no need for holes in your cart.
Call/text 518-563-2846 or email karenvbarber50@gmail.com to find out more and to request your sign or golf cart license plate.
September Flower Planting Guide
We’ve decided that planting anything in August can be a challenge – so we’ve skipped the August recommendations and gone right to September!
It’s still hot in September, but the evenings are cooler and even if you’re not really ambitious enough to plant, it’s a great time to plan how you’re going to make those pots, and the beds up front look great!
Sandhill Cranes, Golf Courses and Residential Areas
Florida’s Sandhill Crane subspecies lived and breeds in Florida year-round. As development continues to expand in Florida, cranes are forced to live in closer proximity to people and they have adapted to losses in habitat by using urban environments – including golf courses – for foraging and nesting.
The key point to remember is that Sandhill Cranes are protected by both state and federal law and may not be harmed. Harm is defined as anything that kills or injures fish or wildlife. It is a violation to make physical contact with cranes, or to attempt to hit them with golf balls or other objects. It is also illegal to feed Sandhill Cranes, and it is harmful to both birds and to people. Feeding them may cause them to linger in undesirable areas and lose their natural fear of people and increase the risk of aggressive behaviors.
If you do like to feed birds and have bird feeders in your yard, they should hang more than 6 feet in the air to prevent Sandhill Cranes from getting to them and do use feeders that prevent spillage by squirrels and other larger birds. And keep pet foods in a secure location where they can’t be easily accessed.
Breeding season for Sandhill Cranes is December 1 through May 1 and during that time it is not permitted to ‘haze’ the birds within 400 feet of a nest and within 400 feet of adults with flightless young.
Some examples of hazing methods permissible for use with adult Sandhill Cranes outside of breeding season are:
• Spraying with water in a way that won’t cause harm
• Moving toward them on foot or in a vehicle without making physical contact
• Waving your arms or clapping your hands and shouting at them
Generally, Sandhill Cranes ignore people and it’s mostly due to too much interaction with humans that causes them to become a nuisance.
If you have have bird feeders in your yard, they should hang more than 6 feet in the air to prevent Sandhill Cranes from getting to them and do use feeders that prevent spillage by squirrels and other larger birds.
Come Join the Tuesday Line Dancing Class
by Libby Williams
The TuesdayLine Dancing class is alive and thriving! Libby Williams and Letizia Morales decided to keep the class going all throughout the summer while Jim and Adam took a break with their families. We have had some residents join the class for the first time, and we’ve had good feedback.
Fun is guaranteed and it helps more residents be able to participate and join in when there’s line dancing at the Fairways events where there is music and dancing.
We encourage anyone with an interest in dancing to stop by and join the class. The classes are free to all who come. It is a fun way to exercise and get your body moving.
We appreciate the support we have received so far. We meet at the Master’s clubhouse every Tuesday at 4:00pm. All are welcome. Contact Libby Williams at 407-694-8399 if you have questions! We look forward to seeing you.

History of the
1980’s to Present
by Mike & Janet Scanlon Chairperson
The Koffee Klatch started out as the Coffee Social chaired by Mary Jennings. It was always as now on the second Sunday Morning 8 am to 10 am. Sponsored by the FHAOI (Homeowners Association) this continued up until Covid, when everything closed.
When the Club Houses did reopen in 2021, the chairpersons Bill and Mary Butler went to the FHAOI to let them know that they were going to start the Coffee Social up again and asked for them to sponsor the social. At that time the FHAOI Board told Bill they couldn’t afford the $50 a month to sponsor the Coffee Social. Bill called a few residents together and asked for help in restarting the Coffee Social, the group said they would be more than happy to help. The group suggested that the name be changed so as not to confuse it with the prior Club and that’s how the Koffee Klatch was born. When Bill and Mary stepped down, they asked Mike and Janet Scanlon to chair the Koffee Klatch. Over time the cost of running the Koffee Klatch by an individual was costly, so the Koffee Klatch started
setting out a cup and asking for donations. The donations only cover the cost of the Donuts not the; Cups, Napkins, Sugar, Cream and Coffee, all those costs are out of pocket for the chairperson. After suggestion from residents, we have also changed the time to 9am to 11am. Koffee Klatch gives out Roses to the Ladies for Mother’s Day, for the men there was a small gift for Father’s Day and Christmas there are gifts and gift baskets, all to help stimulate attendance.
This had been working but in the past 6 months, the attendance has been dropping to its lowest ever, at 18. It may be time for this Club to also go away, as many older established clubs have. As of this month the club can last possibly through December of this year with the monies on hand.
If anyone has any thoughts on how to improve and restore the attendance, please let us know. It will be sad to see another activity; that has been a part of the community for so many years, go away.
Please send suggestions to mscan6121@ gmail.com or 813-215-6781 Thank you!

Veterans Corner
by Edwin Ramirez, Commander, Fairways Veteran Group
Orange County Fire and Rescue
In the Fairways Country Club community we often see ambulances and fire trucks drive in through the gates. It could be due to an emergency or a Wellness Check. Fire Prevention week is October 5 – 11, 2025. At our Veterans general meeting on Tuesday, August 12th the Orange County Fire and Rescue Department will offer a detailed seminar on Fire Safety and Prevention. It will be at the Masters Clubhouse starting at 6:30pm.
The meeting is open to all Fairways residents. At the meeting there will be a sign-up sheet, so the Fire Department can visit your home to inspect and replace your smoke detectors. The new detectors that are installed now have a battery life of 10 years.
We still have our “Bricks Honoring Our Veterans” campaign. For $40.00 you can order a brick to honor a veteran that you know. It can be a family member or a friend. They do not need to live in Fairways nor be deceased. We want all of our Fairways residents to join us in honoring all veterans. We will need their name, branch of service, rank and years of service. Call 407-913-3681.

Commanders Thoughts:
There has been a lot of VA information posted on the Fairways Veterans Group Facebook page. If any veteran or family member needs more information, we will help. Towards the end of the year, we will have representatives from the VA and Tricare come in to speak about the various Health and Medical benefits that veterans and their family have. We will keep everyone informed via Facebook, Nextdoor, the TV Monitors and the Eagle newspaper. As always, our sincerest thanks to everyone for supporting the Fairways veterans.

Fairways Community Trash Reminder
Please be reminded of the following guidelines regarding waste pickup in our community:
• Regular Trash: Mondays
• Yard Waste: Wednesdays
• Bulk Pickup (Household Items): Thursdays. Limited to two large items that two men can lift into a truck. Effective immediately, Trash Taxi will no longer pick up construction or remodeling debris. This includes items such as cabinets, flooring, drywall, or multiple fixtures. One single toilet or small item may be acceptable, but emptying an entire house to the curb is not the responsibility of our contracted waste company. If you are remodeling or doing a major cleanout, please arrange for a dumpster or private haul-away service. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our community clean and orderly.
Cozy wants to remind you to be cool!
Yes, it’s important to make sure your dog gets exercise, but with the high humidity combined with the high temperatures in our area right now, less is more! We are experiencing daily temperatures of 95°+ and it can feel like 105°. You need to be very aware of how your dog feels and how it is responding to the temperature.
• Dogs rely mostly on panting and the little bit of sweating they can do through their paw pads and noses, to regulate their body temperature. But on hot and humid days that might not be enough, and overheating becomes a serious risk.
• Watch for early signs like heavy panting, drooling and red gums.
• Flat-faced breeds, puppies, senior dogs and those with thick coats are especially sensitive to heat.
• If your dog gets too warm, move them to a cool spot, offer cool water and a fan and call your vet if you’re worried that the symptoms might be serious.
• Keep your pups safe by avoiding peak heat hours, offering plenty of water and shade and NEVER leaving them in a parked vehicle.
