PALM MEDICAL CENTERS, FAIRWAYS & FHAOI 3rd Annual Golf Tournament

On Saturday, November 9, the Fairways community came together for the muchanticipated Golf Gala, a full-day celebration that captured the essence of camaraderie, dedication, and support within our neighborhood. From a thrilling day on the greens to an evening of delicious food, heartfelt speeches, and gratitude, the Golf Gala was a testament to the strong bonds and unwavering commitment that make Fairways special.

A Day of Golfing Excellence

The day began with avid golfers from all corners of Fairways gathering at the course for friendly competition. The weather was perfect, creating the ideal setting for participants to showcase their skills while sharing laughter and good-natured competition. Golfers — both seasoned and new to the game — played with enthusiasm, with the course providing both a challenge and a chance to connect with friends and neighbors.

Special recognition goes to the sponsors who made the golf part of the event possible. Their support helped create an enjoyable, memorable experience, covering everything from tournament logistics to refreshments and prizes. Many local businesses and individuals stepped up to sponsor the tournament, highlighting their dedication to supporting Fairways’ recreational and social endeavors. Thanks to these sponsors, the Golf Gala was able to provide an exciting day for golfers while raising funds for future community projects.

The Evening Event: Dinner, Awards, and Community Spirit

As the sun set, the day’s excitement carried into the evening for the Golf Gala. Doors opened at 5:00 PM, and by 6:30 PM, guests were seated, ready to enjoy

a beautifully prepared dinner. The tables were adorned with decorations that added elegance to the evening, setting the stage for a night of appreciation and celebration.

The event program featured a warm welcome to guests and heartfelt thank-yous to our sponsors and amazing and enthusiastic volunteers. FHAOI President Mark Kornmann, who has been instrumental in planning and organizing the event, was joined by the FHAOI board, whose commitment to Fairways has been a guiding force in strengthening our community. The board’s vision to foster togetherness and growth has been a driving force behind events like the Golf Gala, creating opportunities for residents to gather, celebrate, and build lasting memories.

A special moment during the evening was the presentation of awards and recognitions to key volunteers who dedicated countless hours to making the Golf Gala a success. These individuals — often working behind the scenes — played an essential role in every aspect of the event, from setting up to helping guests and ensuring the day flowed seamlessly. Their dedication exemplifies the spirit of Fairways, where members go above and beyond to support each other.

Looking Ahead: Strengthening Community Bonds

The Golf Gala wasn’t just a celebration of sport or a chance to gather for an evening of food and laughter; it was a powerful reminder of what makes Fairways unique. The support of sponsors, the commitment of the FHAOI board, and the unwavering dedication of volunteers all combined to create an event that will be remembered for years to come. With every round of applause, every shared meal, and every thank-you exchanged, the bonds within our community grew stronger.

I thought this being the last column for me as President of FHAOI, I would take some time to introduce you to the new FHAOI President Cathy Nanfeldt.

MARK KORNMANN FHAOI PRESIDENT

A Note from the President

I thought this being the last column for me as President of FHAOI, I would take some time to introduce you to the new FHAOI President Cathy Nanfeldt. What better wayasking her some questions:

MK: Ok, Cathy, as I am preparing these questions, I kept hearing the song“Zippity Doo Dah.” What does this song mean to you?

CN: Well Mark, actually it means a lot. My maiden name was Duda. And yes, I’ve heard them all, “Zippity Doo-Dah”, “Camptown Races”… I received lots of jokes about our name growing up. And no, I’m not related to those Duda’s – the Duda Farms – I could only wish. But I smile every time I buy a pack of celery, carrots or lettuce and see my name.

MK: Well, that’s good to know-maybe we could have that song sang at the beginning of each FHAOI Board Meeting-Well, OK just a thought!!!

MK: As President, there was one question I always dreaded getting like, “When are we going to bring the restaurant back?” I would answer we are not. LOL. What’s one question you want to put to rest now?

CN: I’ve had that same question. Also, when are we going to get a guard at the guard shack. And I will say the same thing, we will not be getting either.

MK: Well, I have some free time on my hands, so if you need a guard at the shack-let me know. Do I get a uniform??? Guess not….

MK: You have been an FHAOI board member for two and a half years. Now, Why did you want to serve as the next FHAOI President?

CN: Initially I was a firm no! When you continually asked if I would run, I began to soften to the point that I had a change of heart and feel I can offer something a little different, yet hopefully just as good, to Fairways and our residents.

MK:You most certainly can offer the FHAOI and the residents of Fairways a great deal of expertise, wisdom, and energy!! You GO!!!

MK: You have a husband Jim who is a golfer-what is Jim’s favorite dish you make—ok, more importantly-what dish does he wish you would stop making?

CN: Now that’s a hilarious question and I will answer it honestly. Jim doesn’t like anything I make. That’s mainly because I don’t make anything. Sure, I cooked when we were raising our two girls, but

I rarely make anything now other than the very occasional pepper steak. Jim claims it makes him happy to cook for me. I’d like to believe him, but I think it’s rather he’d like to eat sometime.

MK: Well, I guess I won’t be having a sit-down dinner prepared by the new FHAOI President anytime soon!! What’s Jim’s phone number???

MK: You work Bingo many Wednesday nights and you have played a couple of times. Ok, be honest, what’s the worst part of playing Bingo? For me it’s the coverall games where most of the times 60 numbers get called before a Bingo is called. This is worse than watching paint dry on a manufactured wall…. Now I do love working Bingo and interacting with all the fun people….

CN: Okay, it’s a tie between collecting enough fives for all the games and the end of the night putting everything away quickly so I can go home and go to bed! And yes, those coveralls sometimes drag on forevvverrr.

As your broker, I will get your home more market exposure, and I know how to get the highest and best offers and can use my expertise to help your home sell faster! Call me today and let’s get your home sold!

Looking to buy in Fairways? Let me show you the inventory available and help you find your perfect next home. Call me today!

As an Integrity agent, I live up to the name of the company I represent and will treat you with respect and will be dependable and honest.

A Note from the President

continuedfrompage2

MK: Maybe we start a new bingo game—first number out. You call one number and the first person to call BINGO wins! That would be a quick game!!!

MK: I know you also participate in Water Aerobics. What’s up with that—and that Debbie Yeagley-she’s the person that got me to run for FHAOI President—she’s a real trip, isn’t she?

CN: I love our water aerobics – and love it even better when the Masters pool is heated and toasty warm in the winter months! When I told Debbie I was going to run for President, she first asked me if I realized what I was getting in to. Debbie is a great friend and truthfully, she will encourage me every step of the way. It’s a blessing to have her support as well as my husband’s.

MK: Man, I gave you the opening to have fun with Debbie and you make it all sappy… that’s no fun!!!

MK: You take over the FHAOI after I made a mess of it….just joking… what are some of the priorities for you?

CN: First and foremost, you, Mark, have left FHAOI in a great place. Our bank account is such that it will aid in our social director putting together a number of events throughout the year that will be affordable for our residents to participate. You did a great job with that, and I will continue to work to reach out to the many

organizations we have a good relationship with to sponsor events whenever possible. I will make mending fences with HTA and working together a top priority. An open line of communication with them is a huge goal. I also look forward to getting to know more residents, as well as being a sounding board and liaison between them and the front office.

MK: Well, that’s good because mending wasn’t a good skill for me. I wish my mom had taught me better how to sew and mend—oh, wait, you didn’t mean that kind of mending??!!??

MK: Finally, you know I will always be there to support you and the FHAOI, what are some things you want to share with the Fairways residents about how you will approach your new role as President?

CN: Knowing I will have your support means a lot. Thank you. You taught me the importance of making myself available and following through with any issues that arise. My approach will be to begin each conversation in a calm manner and do my best to work out a solution whenever possible. And if I don’t know the answer, I will reach out to someone who can provide an answer.

MK: I say have some fun. Just make the answers up….. I guess that’s why my tenure as President needs to end…. I hope you all have enjoyed this introduction to Cathy Nanfeldt, your 2025 FHAOI President-welcome her, support her and be there for her!! Congrats Cathy!!

FHAOI TREASURER’S REPORT

It’s Time to Get Your Yard Elfed!

Our “Elf Your Yard” fundraiser has officially begun, bringing holiday cheer right to your doorstep! Just like our popular “Boo Program” in October, this festive event lets you spread joy around the community while supporting the Fairways food pantry.

Here’s how it works:

1. Sign-Up: When your yard gets “elfed,” you’ll find an Elf sign in your yard along with a Ziploc bag. Inside, you’ll find a form to fill out, where you can choose the next yard you’d like to “elf” and, if you’d like, leave a small donation.

2. Donation: Any donation you leave will help support our food pantry, providing essential items to residents in need. Donations are optional but greatly appreciated!

3. Passing the Elf: Once you’ve filled out the form and left your donation, just place everything back in the Ziploc bag attached to the sign. Our team will come by within 24 hours to pick it up and “elf” the next yard on your list!

Special thanks to everyone involved for helping us make the holidays a little brighter! Let’s spread some festive fun while supporting a great cause!

This sign is NOT a ‘suggestion.’ ALL traffic must stop at ALL stop signs in Fairways.

Every time. Always! Also applies to golf carts. Really!

Dover and Happy

Jack

Jack is a rescue dog, is five years old and is loved by Bill. He’s a certified therapy dog and loves to go to work and make the day special for elderly people in assisted living facilities throughout Central Florida.

“The training to have Jack become a certified therapy dog took nine months and was hard work and a great experience both of us. We’re also in an agility group and that helps keep him – and me – fit!”

“Jack loves to play and have fun, but when I tell him it’s time to go to work, he becomes very serious and focused. He’s great company, gets along pretty well with the cats and is happy to hang out and watch football or relax with a good book.”

Cesar Millan says, “You don’t pick a dog, they pick you!” And Happy, Dover and Peanut –the cat not pictured - picked, and are loved by, Nancy.

“In 2016 I was still working in New York and one day my boss’s wife stopped by with a threemonth old miniature golden doodle, and I fell in love. Just two weeks later my boss gifted me the dog. Within six months Happy and I were off on a new adventure in Florida, and we have now been together for eight years. He has been a saving grace in my life, loves everyone in the park and smiles at those he meets.

“In 2021 a friend was very ill and could no longer really take care of her dog. No one in the family could take him in so Dover, a small Bichon Frisé, joined Happy and my rescue cat Peanut. All pets are wonderful and my three get along and make sure no day is boring!

Zeus

Zeus is still a baby – loved by Donna, also known as the Fairways Weed Witch – and hasn’t grown into his name just yet. He’s a Chihuahua, and was definitely the pick of the litter, and comes with needle-sharp teeth and puppy breath! He’s irresistible.

Donna fell in love with him the minute she saw him. “He’s so much fun and settling in nicely. He’s high energy and does love to chew, of course, and I try to keep tempting items out of the way. I’m out working in yards a lot of the time and he has a great spot on the golf cart seat and keeps me company all day and loves meeting people and is super friendly.”

One of the big benefits of a pocket size dog is that you can take them almost anywhere and Zeus is getting to be well-traveled and well-known in the neighborhood.

FWGA Libby’s Legacy Fight for the Cure Tournament a Rousing Success!

breastawarenesscancer breastcancerawareness

The Fairways Fight for the Cure golf tournament held on October 23, 2024, was a rousing success. This event was started 20 years ago by Dottie Ramsdell who loved golf. In 2004 after her daughter was diagnosed with breast cancer Dottie worked hard at getting the authorization and approval from Libby’s Legacy to hold the first “Rally For The Cure” golf tournament. Dottie handed the reins over to Lynn Blair and a group of unwavering volunteers in 2020 and in honor of Dottie the tournament was renamed The Dottie Ramsdell Fight for the Cure. The legacy continues for Dottie and the generosity of the residents of Fairways is still inspiring.

This year we had 142 people attend the luncheon. Almost as many non-golfers as golfers. A big thank you to Judy Smegelski who sold all the tickets for the non-golfers. The food as always was delicious and supplied by Skip Brown and his crew from Checkers. This year he continued to donate back all the monies collected for the lunch - $690.00

The golfers paid $1,440.00 in entrance fees. The Sponsor The hole sponsorships raised an incredible $7,957.00. The Fairways Veterans raised $1,331.00, with the Bingo Players raising $1,401.00. Christian Brothers Automotive gave $750.00. Shirley Crall and Lynne LaRoche donated snack bags for the golfers. This kind of generosity makes this event so successful. This is the first time every one of the Winners of the golf tournament returned their prize monies - $360.00. This includes Tim Barber for Closest to the Pin for men, JJ Lee for Closest to the Pin for Women, Marcie Rein for the Chipping Contest, Don Barber for the Putting Contest and Barb Avey for Closest to the Crooked Line.

Multiple gift baskets and gift cards were donated by residents and local vendors. A big thank you to Dee Perrine and her business Fudge and Sweets 2 for her donation of the white chocolate golf pops that were on every table. The raffle raised $896.00. Our beer cart girls, Letizia Morales and Mary Salter cleared $140.53 after expenses.

Fairways Sewing Group

We would like to thank our community, families and friends for all your donations and support. The October Craft Show was so wonderful to see those who stopped by to say hello and see our creative items and gifts.

The donations that we receive keep us busy making items to donate and craft items. In October we made and donated 15 Mastectomy aprons (for drain bags).and 15 Chemo Caps. These were given to Libby’s Legacy for Breast Cancer Support at the Fairways Masters ClubHouse. Luncheon.

The Foster Love Project in Pittsburgh PA received 31 baby bibs and 10 baby blankets. One of our members was traveling to Pittsburg and was familiar with the organization.

We were approached by Mike Scanlon at the beginning of October who stated that he needed 100 Christmas stockings. Mike took over Harry Thomson’s Kids charitable giving Project. The stockings will be given out at Faith Methodist Church on Dean Road and at the Bithlo Community Center. There were several residents here in Fairways that donated Christmas material for this project. It’s wonderful to see how widespread our efforts go-including the North Pole.

Left is a photo of some of the Fairways Sewing Group ladies with the Christmas stockings we made.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Annual PreThanksgiving Potluck. It went extremely well. We had a variety of food provided by our residents and the veterans group. Again, a special thanks to Deb Gunter who volunteered in coordinating the event. In the background we also had many more volunteers who also helped, and you have not been forgotten. To all of you, we want to thank you very much. The veterans of the Fairways community appreciate the continual support that we receive from everyone.

Our Fairways Country Club manager, Priscilla Herrick, has always been an avid supporter of our veterans. On Veterans Day Priscilla and her staff provided a wonderful luncheon for our veterans and their plus one. As veterans we are thankful for everyone in the Fairways community, and we want to extend heartfelt appreciation to Hometown America as well.

Four Major Military Events That Happened on Christmas - 1776: Washington’s Famous Crossing of the Delaware, 1864: The First Battle of Fort Fisher, 1972: Operation Linebacker II in North Vietnam, “The Stars and Stripes Forever” is a patriotic American march written and composed by John Philip Sousa on Christmas Day in 1896.

Commanders Thoughts:

I challenge all our wonderful Fairways residents during the month of December to perform an act of kindness. Fill out a Holiday card to a veteran. Get it to me by Wednesday December 18. I will be taking them to the VA Medical Centers in Lake Baldwin and Lake Nona. There are many veterans who are in the hospital during this time of year. Many are even without any families. Let’s help bring joy to them during this time. Call 407-913-3681 for more information.

In closing the Fairways Veterans Group would like to wish everyone and their families a joyful and safe holiday season.

Latin American Club

We hope that you enjoyed your Thanksgiving Day with your family and friends. I can’t believe that this year flew by so quickly. This means that we have come to the culmination of 2024. This year brought some of us loss of loved ones and health issues. Others experienced wonderful blessings, new beginnings and friendships. Despite it all, we pushed through it, and we must be thankful. As we continue to enjoy our time with our family and friends, don’t forget that there are some in our community that don’t have families of their own. So, please check on your neighbors and offer them some help. Maybe a ride to the supermarket, picking up their mail or even offering them a plate of food. Anything helps.

We at the Latin American Club, have been hard at work planning our yearly Three Kings Day Celebration Dinner Dance that will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025. Food will be served, in addition to a live band and music. The tickets are being sold for $20 and will be $25 at the door. If you are interested in purchasing tickets, please reach out to our President - Gladys Carpena, Vice President - Gill Lowe, Director of Membership - Carmen Zayas or Director of Music - Juana Pasco. Contact phone numbers can be found on the information below.

For our members we are planning a Christmas Party that will be held at our next social meeting on Thursday, December 19. Please bring a dish to share.

At last month’s social meeting on Thursday, October 24 we had 42 people in attendance, and had some new members sign up. Our general meetings are open to all Fairways residents and are held on the fourth Thursday of the month at 6:00 pm at the Masters Clubhouse. After a brief informational meeting we enjoy birthday cake, and games like dominoes, cards, bingo, and we would love to see you there. You can reach the club at our newly revamped Facebook page at Latin American Club at Fairways (LACF) or by email at latinamericanclub2024@gmail.com. The club President Gladys Carpena can also be contacted directly at either (201) 710-0753 or (407) 456-3091.

We would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and blessed New Year! Feliz Navidad y Prospero Año Nuevo!

Ron Griffin opened the meeting with a prayer of thanks for the potluck buffet. Richard Grout and Gil Lowe prepared two turkeys with dressing and gravy – YUM! After dinner, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited and there was a moment of silence to remember family and friends who couldn’t be with us.

Ron Griffin entertained us with two jokes, one about the new pastor who asked a little boy “Where is the post office?” The little boy gave directions. The pastor saw the boy and asked, “Why don’t you come to church? You can’t get to heaven.”, and the boy said, “If you can’t find the post office, how can I find heaven?”

Ronnie Tricoche-Griffin, the Sunshine Committee chair, sent cards to Robert Gussick, Dorothy Gurry-Pfeiffer, and Ina Wheeler. Birthday chocolate was given to Cathy Scheblein. Tom and Claire Carter celebrated their 47th anniversary!

Share the Wealth winners were Winny Desfosses, Ellie Armstrong, Geri Ossana, and Linda Murray. There was a wealth of door prizes! Such fun!!

Much appreciation to our members who set up the tables and chairs. Thank you to Letizia Morales for cleaning up after the buffet. Additionally, many thanks to Fran Archibald!!

Much appreciation to Debbie Yeagley and Connie Fasano for greeting and giving out door prize tickets. In addition, Debbie Yeagley and Gil Lowe for calling HoBo Bingo and passing out the $ winners.

Singles Club Update

The Singles Club had their annual Holiday party on Sunday, December 1 at the Masters. It was a potluck dinner, and everyone enjoyed good food and good fun.

The December brunch will be Thursday, December 19 at 10:00 am at IHOP. The IHOP is located at 588 S. Alafaya Trail.

Current club members have decided to do away with club dues. The hot dog social has been eliminated and we’ve decided to make the Holiday party totally potluck. If interested in being a member in 2025, contact Suzanne Hammons at 407-616-5006. We have a few members who are comfortable driving, so if you need a ride, contact Suzanne.

Jesus is the Reason for the Season!

Merry Christmas to one and all.

This month we celebrate the birth of our Lord. Don’t be afraid to say, “Merry Christmas!” to everyone you meet. For several years Christians felt they needed to say, “Happy Holidays.” Don’t be afraid, be bold and loud and say, “Merry Christmas!” We need to live our faith “out loud’ in the world. Sometimes, the only Jesus people may see or hear is through us. You are never whose life you may touch.

The Fairways Christian Women’s Connection has only one event this month. On Friday, December 20th, we’re having a Christmas party at the fire pit at the Masters at 6 pm. Menu is Mexican Potluck with a cookie exchange and “White Elephant” gift exchange. You do not have to do the cookie or “White Elephant”; it’s your choice. The gift should be valued at no more than $10. Look through your closet and see what you have that can be regifted! If you bring cookies, please bring two dozen to share.

In January, we’ll be starting a new Bible study series over the book of Mark. More details will be in the January Eagle.

As always, if you’re able to help the Samaritan Resource Center with their homeless outreach, a good choice, with cooler weather upon us, would be blankets, scarves, gloves, sweaters or jackets. The drop-off box is at 14349 Augusta Road.

If you have any questions, please email Jane Slotnick at jaslotnick5@gmail.com or text Joy Ruggiero at 614-743-4402.

Gerry Hits the Ultimate Shot

On a warm, late October Wednesday morning, while playing in the Couple’s Group, Gerald Mishloney carded his first ever hole in one on hole number 12. Number 12 was playing at 128 yards that day and into a stiff breeze. Gerry, being the experienced and knowledgeable golfer that he is, took into consideration the wind speed, elevation of the green and the distance to the hole and selected his club. Apparently, he chose correctly.

His playing partners, Bud Birdie Boney, Lynne Blair and Sandy Weeks had no idea what was in store for them as Gerry approached the tee box. Now this is where the story gets dicey. Some reports say he struck the ball clean, and the trajectory was dead in line with the flag and the ball dropped safely into the hold on the fly. Other reports have him hitting the ball a foot off the ground landing some 20 yards from the green and running to the hole as if the ball had eyes. No matter which version is factual, he took one swing, and the ball went in the hole for his first hole in one feat that some golfers never accomplish.

After the round, Gerry stayed in the pro shop for hours and bought everyone who came in a drink and told the story of the day’s highlights. Congratulations Gerry on your first hole in one and hopefully many more will follow.

You Asked …. And Here it is!

Tom & Angela David with Aced Medicare Insurance made these pudding shots and handed them out at their hole at the FHAOI Golf Tournament. They were a hit, and people wanted the recipe.

Strawberry Cheesecake Pudding Shots

Ingredients:

1. Jello No Bake Cheesecake mix with Graham Cracker pie crust.

a. You can get the Strawberry No Bake Cheesecake mix with the strawberry topping for an extra flare.

2. 8 oz tub Cool whip – You can use an off brand for cost savings (it doesn’t affect the flavor)

3. Vodka – Mid shelf range is fine (flavored or regular)

4. Strawberry Syrup –Publix sells this for about $6.00 a quart

Instructions:

1. In a medium mixing bowl, begin by mixing your Cheesecake Mix per the package’s instructions, using the above combination of ⅓ milk, ⅓ vodka and ⅓ strawberry syrup in lieu of the called for milk. For example, if the package calls for 1½ Cup milk you would use ½ cup Milk, ½ cup Vodka and ½ cup Strawberry Syrup

2. Allow the mixture to set until thick (usually about 30 minutes) and then fold in the whipped topping.

3. In the meantime, set up your cups and sprinkle a little of the graham cracker pie crust (raw) into each bottom of a large shot glass or any small glass you might have.

4. Top with pudding, sprinkle with more graham cracker crumbs (if you like) and garnish with a slice of strawberry or the strawberry topping that comes with the Jello No Bake Strawberry Cheesecake

5. Place it in the freezer and allow it to chill for 30 minutes or until nice and thick, I like to do it overnight.

Each box of Jello No Bake Cheesecake will make 10 to 14, 2 oz servings.
