THE REALITY OF WINTER IN AUSTRALIA Let’s be honest, winter in Australia is pretty mild, but the climate varies depending on where you live. Obviously, the southern states experience much colder winters while the northern part of the country stays relatively warm. This means that flying south for the winter is a no go if you prefer the heat. Instead you should point your compass north.
At the end of the day, winter in Australia isn’t bad. Especially when you consider our neighbours in the northern hemisphere. They’re buffeted by bone-chilling blizzards and waist-deep snow, whereas the closest Darwin residents get to sub zero temperatures is when they open the fridge to grab a beer. SOME POPULAR AUSTRALIAN WINTER ACTIVITIES For those who live in the southern states of Australia there are still plenty of things to do in winter. Why not check out one of our many ski resorts? There are 16 in total located throughout Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania. This includes the famous Thredbo Resort, which gives keen snow bunnies the opportunity to ski from Australia’s highest point – Mount Kosciusko. Of course winter sports aren’t for everyone. If you’d prefer something a little bit less strenuous, whale watching is a great option. Orcas congregate off the southern coast of Western Australia between May and November, giving you the chance for a rare glimpse at these beautiful creatures. At the same time in New South Whales, humpback whales are making their way north to the Great Barrier Reef.
OUR FAVOURITE WINTER DESTINATIONS IN AUSTRALIA As far as discovering the best Australian winter destinations go, you can’t beat the beautiful alpine town of Bright. Located in Victoria’s high country, Bright is full of charming accommodation options and winter activities. You can ski Mount Beauty, quench your thirst at the award-winning Bright Brewery or simply admire the panorama from Apex Lookout. Surprisingly, another fantastic winter destination is Uluru Rock. The main reason being that seeing it at any other time of the year is an exercise in fly karate and heat resistance. Seriously, you’re better off waiting until the flies buzz off and the cooler temperatures arrive if you really want to enjoy this majestic and culturally significant monolith. Finally, our third favourite winter destination in Australia is Broome, Western Australia. Call us suckers for blue skies and warm water, but Broome is the ultimate mid-year escape. It doesn’t even feel like winter in Australia when you’re here. In fact, between the awesome restaurants, nightlife and temperatures, you’d be mistaken for thinking it was summer.
